12-31-08 Ride

Ride in the morning, met Joe at his house. Rode over via BVP/Citrus/El Norte to Broadway, then turned on Village. From here, pretty much the same route as the first part of the 1-4-08 ride. We stopped at a cool Starbucks by the airport and had a coffee, nice view, and good discussion. Weather started cold but warmed up around the time of the coffee break. Back home by the park route. I felt great during this ride, especially after I warmed up.

Average speed = 18.1 mph. Total mileage = 47.9 mi.

Ride from home over to the Park n Ride by the mall, where I met Joe, and we rode to BVP via Beethoven. Out to San Pasqual Valley Rd, then over Milky Way to the 78, which we took out to Bandy Canyon. Up this road (steep as usual but not overly tough), then over Highland Valley back to Pomerado. Back over the freeway to the Park n Ride, where we had a coffee at the Starbuck's before I rode home. Nice afternoon ride.
Total mileage = 25 mi.

12-28-08 Ride

Time trial ride in the morning with Dave from his house. I think I rode over to Dave’s house. It was pretty cold at the start. A little sore from the previous day’s ride, so we didn’t take it too fast. I don’t think I noted my route time, since we weren’t going to beat any records. Total mileage was 23.1 mi.

Later that day, I went out with Joe for a ride, where I met him at the Escondido Park n Ride. We went over Beethoven to BBP, then San Pasqual Rd to Old Milky Way to the 78, then out to Bandy Canyon. Up this grade, then I went down a ways and rode back up the final part with Joe. Over Highland Valley to Pomerado, then across the freeway and stopped for a coffee at the Starbucks by the Shell station. Back home the normal route. Joe kept up pretty well on all of the parts before it started getting steep, and the Bandy Canyon climb wore him out.

Average speed = 17.1 mph. Total mileage = 25.0 mi.

12-27-08 Ride

Ride in the morning with Jim (initially) and Dave. It was cold, with frost on the cars at the beginning. Over to Escondido, and up Via Rancho to Del Dios, which we took to Via de la Valle. Dave had put weights on his bike to increase his workout. Down this road to El Camino Real, where Jim headed back. We continued on to PCH, where we turned and went through Del Mar and over to Torrey Pines. Up the inside route. As we were starting uphill, a guy passed us, and I thought it was Dave. He was going fast, so I tried to hang onto his wheel. No luck. Got up to the top of the steep part, and he was ~100 yards ahead. I really pushed to close the gap and got closer before we turned onto Torrey Pines. He took off again, then turned right onto Torrey Pines, so I went all out to catch him and tell him he was going the wrong way. About a mile into this part, I got close enough to realize it wasn’t Dave. Bad! Turned around and headed back to Genesee, and I was pretty wiped out. Looked but didn’t see Dave, so I stopped and called his cell to let him know the route and where to meet up. He called back, and we eventually got back together at Genesee/Eastgate Mall. Back via Miramar Rd and Pomerado all the way to the turnoff for Dave’s house. This was very slow for me, but Dave hung with me (good guy). After the turnoff, I headed home, and I was totally spent. Stopped by Baron’s to sit for awhile and collect myself, then I made it home. I was incredibly hungry. Don’t think I had eaten enough to sustain the workout. Felt good after some food. No cramping of legs, it’s just that they didn’t have any push in them after the “pursuit” section of the ride.
Average speed = 15.3 mph. Total mileage = 53.7 mi.
