06/25/2026 Ride/Walk

Woke up early enough to get out on a ride by around 6:15. It was a perfect morning for riding, temperature-wise. I headed through the neighborhood via Capilla Rd and up to RB Rd, taking it to CdS and heading west. I kept a little faster pace than usual on this ride but didn't push really hard. Down to San Dieguito Rd and down Three Witches, turning right on El Apajo and taking it and Via de Santa Fe to Calzada del Bosque. Over to VdlV from there, turning left and riding all the way down to PCH. The bike lane is in quite rough shape after the little hill all the way to just before the freeway. Got down to the coast and added a little distance by riding to Lomas Santa Fe before turning around and riding back toward Del Mar. I took the route by the seaside park for a change, then rode on PCH over to CMR. To the beginning of the 56 bike path, where I stopped for a short break, eating a banana. Then I took the bike path back to CdS, pushing a little harder at the end of the gradual climb. Then I took CdS to PdS, turning there and riding through the Del Sur neighborhood, eventually using Del Sur Ridge Rd to get to Lone Quail Rd and back to RB Rd. Home the normal way from there via W Bernardo Dr. Toward the end of the ride my right shifter wasn't shifting, but when I got home it worked for me. Will probably change the battery anyway.

Avg speed = 16.7 mph. Total mileage = 40.0 mi
Avg power = 141 W. Weighted avg power = 168 W
Total elevation gain = 2100'
Avg heartrate = 118 BP (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 45
Training Load = 145
Intensity = 76%

While I was riding down by Del Mar I saw the fairgrounds and started thinking about going to the fair. Got home, made some coffee, and thought a little more about it before proposing the idea to Ann. She was game, so we got ready. I had a hamburger for brunch, not a fan of fair food and prices. An drove us down to Torrey Pines HS, where we parked and took a school bus through heavy fair traffic to the fairgrounds. Got there and into the fair a little before noon. We walked over to hear a brass ensemble at the Paddock Stage, they were listenable but not great. Then we walked through the art and photography exhibits, which were much more interesting. From there to see the livestock, which was larger than in recent years. That was also entertaining, but you couldn't get as close to the animals as before. From there we walked back to find something for Ann to eat. I had some of her French fries, and we talked to this chatty old lady at our table who was something of a fair nut. Mildly entertaining. We then walked over to the infield area of the racetrack and watched The Flying Royals, a trapeze and acrobatic troupe. Their trapeze act wasn't as good as I remembered similar acts from previous years at the fair. On the way back to the main part of the fair we saw the bird lady from Ramona doing a bird show with a pirate theme. She was the same person we saw at the Pima County Fair last year, she puts on a good show. Back to the main area, where we walked around a little bit before sitting down to watch some free music at one of the stages. I got a burrito to eat, and we stayed long enough for me to eat the burrito before leaving (the band and singer weren't that good). Before this we had walked around the garden area and heard a really atrocious ukulele and kazoo singing band, they were laughably bad. After I ate we walked over to the craft exhibit hall and saw the crafts, collections, dresses, and student art. That part was also mildly entertaining. Some odd collections: library cards. I was pretty tired by that time, thankfully so was Ann, so we walked back to the tram stop and got a ride to the high school parking lot, this time in negligible traffic. I drove home, had some more food and watched a little TV when I got home, and that was the evening. Although I didn't have my tracker on, I estimated that we walked 4-5 miles at the fair.

06-24-2026 Run/Swim

Slept pretty well, about 8 hours, given that I had a nap in the afternoon. I got up and got ready for a run, including doing some light dynamic stretches beforehand. I need to do more stretching, can feel that my legs are tight from not enough limbering up. Started slowly, ran down by the park and did the 5k route, avoiding the areas where the sidewalks are torn up. I finished a little faster than I started, still need more running to get to an acceptable pace. The elapsed time on the run was a little long because I didn't adjust my Strava to pause when I stopped. And it turns out that my Strava didn't sync with my HR band either. Dang it.

Avg pace = 8:59/mi
Total distance = 3.13 mi
Elapsed moving time = 28:08

I had just a little time after I got home to relax a bit. I entered the Training Load coefficients into my modeling spreadsheet and saw that the agreement was indeed pretty good, with a couple of outliers that I can't explain. Still, it's good enough to start reporting in my cycling analysis program and storing in the database. Then I got ready for a swim at the WWC. Folks started showing up right before 8:00, and the pool was full from the start. I initially had lane 3 to myself, shared it with Jeff on my last 250. I swam four of them at tempo, pausing in between to catch my breath. Here are the splits from the four 250s: 4:30, 4:28, 4:28, 4:21. Last one was the fastest, not sure why because my form was pretty bad there.

Avg pace = 1:47/100 yds (Video, not counting pauses)
Total distance = 1000 yds
Elapsed moving time = 17:47 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 134 bpm (perhaps)
Relative Effort = 14 (perhaps)
SWOLF = 36
Avg stroke rate = 22 bpm (more strokes to go faster)
Avg pull distance = 2.37 yds

Chilled the rest of the morning, having more time than usual before my volunteer shift at the hospital. It was a busy day there, I seemed to be moving for most of the four hours. Had a pretty big lunch there, including leftover pizza I'd brought, so that helped. Still, I was pretty tired by the end of the shift. I am so glad I am retired and have more control over what I do. Got home, talked to Ben before dinner, his heart scan results came back, and they don't look great. I'm guessing he is going to need stents, hoping it's not open-heart surgery. Maybe medicine can be the treatment for now, fingers crossed. After dinner I chatted with Ross about cell phones, cellular plans, and laptops. He needs to have his own phone and plan, in my opinion. Ann and I watched some TV after that, and the rest of the evening was quiet and fairly short before I fell asleep.

06-23-2026 Ride

This was a nice morning. I woke up, having done the dishes the night before (happy to have gotten that done), and had a bowl of cereal before unloading the dishwasher. Then I got ready for a coffee run bike ride with Andy. Just before the ride I noticed that my rear brake was really grabbing onto the disc, but I didn't have time to replace the brake pads, so I rode that way. Up through the neighborhood, taking the full length of Matinal Cir and getting onto W Bernardo Dr. Over to RB Rd, then up to Bernardo Oaks Dr. He was ready and waiting when I got to his place, and we started rolling right away. I dialed my pace back on this ride to more closely match his speed. We rode to Rios Rd and got over to Pomerado Rd, taking it up to Stowe Dr. We turned here and took it slowly up this gradual climb, riding up to O'Brien's Boulangerie, where we stopped for a break. It was my turn to pay, and we had coffee and shared a pastry. We talked car buying for a while, then brainstormed about the planned bikepacking trip in November. We agreed on a date and a tentative schedule of routes averaging 50-65 miles/day. We also thought to invite Cam and Nel along. After the break we headed back down to Community Rd, turned right there, and took it over to Poway Rd, turning right to see if Andy's Honda SUV was still in the used car lot at Poway Toyota (it was). Then we took Midland Rd over to Twin Peaks Rd and turned right to get up to Espola Rd, where we turned left. Again, slow on this little climb, turning left at the top onto Titan Way to get to Riparian Rd. We rode to Lake Poway Rd and turned left to ride up to the top, do the little loop (counterclockwise), then come back down to Summer Sage Rd. A left turn there, taking it to Bridlewood Rd to get back to Espola Rd, where we turned left. We rode down the hill and turned left on Summerfield Ln to get over to Rios Rd, which took us back to Andy's house. I stopped there briefly, then continued home the normal way via Bernardo Center Dr. It was heating up by the time I got home.

Avg speed = 13.2 mph. Total mileage = 25.4 mi
Avg power = 111 W. Weighted avg power = 139 W
Total elevation gain = 1640'
Avg heartrate = 113 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 28
Training Load = 86
Intensity = 63%

Got home and had some breakfast, I was hungry from the workouts. During the day I replaced the front and rear brake pads on my Canyon. That went pretty smoothly. I also logged a warranty repair case with Canyon about the damage to my bike frame down by the bottom bracket. We will see if they honor the request. Watched a little World Cup on Peacock (Telemundo), where the audio is in Spanish. In the afternoon and evening I worked on creating a model for the Training Load parameter in Strava, which I am guessing is a weighted average of the amount of time spent in the different power zones that are defined by my FTP. Ultimately, I was successful in creating a model that predicts the TL pretty well, just a couple of outliers that I can't explain. I used Claude to perform the multivariate linear regression analysis, and it did a good job.

06-22-2026 Hike/Swim/Ride

Today was a day of minor firsts. I need to get ready for the upcoming backpacking trip, so I went out early in the morning for a hike around the neighborhood with my camping backpack on, initially loaded with a gallon of water and some of my gear. Hiked for about 3.5 miles and listened to a podcast while I was hiking. I got home and had a little time before I got ready for a swim at the WWC. Headed over there, and I was the only one through the gate when it opened. But people started showing up, and the pool ended up being pretty crowded. I swam for 1500 yds without stopping, averaging 19-20 strokes/length for this workout. Started to feel more tired near the end, so I have work to do to increase my swimming fitness. Here are the splits for the three 500s: 9:34, 9:47, 9:51.

Avg pace = 1:57/100 yds (Video)
Total distance = 1500 yds
Elapsed moving time = 29:12 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 149 bpm (Zepp, possible but not likely)
Relative Effort = 40 (not likely)
SWOLF = 37
Avg stroke rate = 19 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.49 yds

Got home and had some cereal for breakfast. I also started my first day of a week's worth of skin cream treatment applications to my face. Not looking forward to how my face will feel in about a week's time, but the time window seems to be the best fit for getting it done. In the morning I got my new phone, a 2025 Moto G Power, and I started setting it up. This is going to take a while to get it configured like my old phone. Patience! I also worked on including temperature data into my cycling analysis program, since the data are made available by my Wahoo. Got most of the way done, although I still need to incorporate this functionality into the batch processing program I wrote. Later for that. I ate a light lunch and, in the early afternoon, I got ready for a bike ride. Had to connect my phone to my Wahoo and do some setting up for basic functionality. Seemed like it captured the ride data as intended. I rode down, on a warm and breezy day, by the park and over the pedestrian bridge to BVP, heading to Beethoven Dr and turning right. I took this steep climb up to Sierra Linda Dr, rode pretty slowly in my lowest gear. Then I turned left and took the descent to San Pasqual Ed and accidentally turned right. I rode for a bit before turning around and heading back to BVP, where I took a left and then a right on Mary Ln. Here was a other climb, longer but not as steep, and I rode up to the top, turning left on Summit Dr. The descents weren't quite as fun on this day because of gusty winds. Down to the 78 (aka San Pasqual Valley Rd), where I crossed and stayed on Summit Dr until it turned into Skyline Dr. Then I turned left on Idaho Ave and rode down to Citrus Ave, turning left there and the right to get back on Idaho Ave, taking me to BVP. I turned left there, rode up to Eldorado Dr, and took a right to see where it would take me. It got me to Juniper St, where I turned right and then left onto Green Ave. This street turns into Naranja St, and that got me to Vermont Ave. A right turn took me to Escondido Blvd, where I turned left and rode down to Elku Ave, taking me to Kit Carson Park. I turned right on Beethoven Dr, which turns into Del Lago Blvd, getting me to the freeway. I took the normal freeway route home from here, going slowly up the last two climbs.

Avg speed = 13.9 mph. Total mileage = 17.5 mi
Avg power = 119 W. Weighted avg power = 162 W
Total elevation gain = 1420'
Avg heartrate = 121 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 30
Training Load = 70
Intensity = 74%

As mentioned, my new phone synced with my Wahoo and captured the ride in Strava and Dropbox. I was tired from the ride and had a little nap in the afternoon. There was a small fire down by the park in the afternoon, it must have flared up after I rode by there, but the response was rapid and effective. The evening was quiet. I talked to Mom in the late afternoon, she was a little out of sorts at the start but warmed up throughout the call. Had dinner after that, then I called Ross. He was in a mood when I first talked to him, upset that my call had interrupted her dinner and caused her to stop eating. But he calmed down through the course of the call, and we talked at length about Mom's frequently bringing up the subject of moving into a care facility. I'd talked to Mom for a while in the earlier call, I still don't think she is serious enough about this option that we need to act on it now. Ross was calmer at the end of the call than at the beginning, so I call that a win as well.

06-21-2026 Walk

Happy Summer Day! I slept until 8:00, catching up from the lack of sleep on the redeye flight the night before (<>). Got up and had some coffee and a piece of toast, keeping it light because we were going out for brunch later. I chilled around the house in the morning, had to work on getting the printer to connect to the PC. The wireless connection might not be working any more, and I ended up hooking the printer to the computer using an Ethernet cable. That seemed to do the trick. We left the house a little before 11:30 and drove to The French Oven in Scripps Ranch. It was pretty crowded, for Father's Day I guess, but Ann got us a table while I waited in line to place our order. Food was good, the almond croissant in particular. I had coffee, which jazzed me up a bit. From there we drove down to the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, parking in a neighborhood and walking to the museum. There was a wedding taking place, so with our senior discounts it was only $15 for both of us to enter. The museum was featuring an exhibition of art from the Dean collection (Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys) titled Giants. It was pretty interesting. We walked through most of the exhibit before sitting down to watch a video interview of the two of them where they explained their philosophy of art collecting. It definitely changed my perception of them as well as the collection, made the visit much more worthwhile. After walking through the museum we walked back to the car, and then I drove us to a speakeasy in North Park called Part Time Lover. This place had a nice vibe, was maybe a little too dark for my taste, but the drinks were good and the music was all LPs spun by a guy who was pulling records out of a very esoteric collection in the back. I think it was a success. No need to go back, but the experience was a fun, interesting one. We drove home from there, ate a light supper, and called it an evening.

06-20-2026 Ride

Flight into San Diego arrived a little bit ahead of schedule. I was able to get just a little sleep on the plane, not much. Watched a couple of episodes of Ozark to pass the time. I was a little too impatient to get off the plane and ended up leaving my tablet in the seat pocket. Damn it! I didn't realize until I got home, and by that time it was likely too late to expect getting it back. I did file a loss report and crossed my fingers. To cool off I took a ride to meet up with the Bisikleta riders on their route. James had his live track on, so I figured I would meet them on Highland Valley Rd. Headed down by the park and over Pomerado Rd to Highland Valley Rd, then took the flats to near the base of the first climb. As I got there the first riders passed me going the other way, so I waited until the last riders were past me and turned around to catch up with them. Chatted a little bit with Paula, who slowed down to wait for me. We rode back up to Pomerado Rd, turned left and headed up to where I thought we were supposed to turn. But Paula had us turning sooner, so I took a U-turn and rode back to Bernardo Trails Dr and turned right, meeting up with the others. This road is pretty steep at times, and Fritz and I were in the lead as we climbed up to a point where we turned right on Aceituno St. Then it was a series of descents and climbs on streets to Avenida Marbella. We turned left on Camino Ramillette, which got us to Paseo del Verano. A descent to the Bernardo Winery complex, some of the riders went past the turn, so I rode to them and directed them back to the turn to stop at Manzanita Coffee Roasters for a break. This break took longer than usual, I shared some of my experience from the Haleakala climb with a couple of the riders. The original route had us riding up past Poway High School, but the consensus was to shorten the ride since we were planning on meeting afterwards for lunch. So we turned left on Paseo del Verano and took it back to Pomerado Rd, turning left there and riding down to RB Rd. A right turn there got us on the usual way back to the starting point from there, and that's what we did. I waited at a couple of spots to make sure everybody was okay, so Paula and I were the last ones to arrive at the parking lot. We had lunch at Harland Brewing Co near our starting point. I had a root beer and a couple of crackers that Paula brought, but I didn't want to eat or drink that much. Decent conversation, I chatted with her, Ray, and James, who were sitting down at my end of the table. Gideon showed up later, and we talked for a bit as well. From there I rode home via the RB Rd and W Bernardo Dr route.

Avg speed = 14.9 mph. Total mileage = 20.9 mi
Avg power = 127 W. Weighted avg power = 157 W
Total elevation gain = 1330'
Avg heartrate = 123 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 32
Training Load = 85
Intensity = 71%

Got home and ate a little something more. I also spent some time doing a remote lock-out of my tablet, in the expectation that I would never see it again and didn't want others access to my information. The rest of the afternoon and evening were quiet. I read a fair amount and watched just a little TV.

06-19-2026 Walks

This was an overall quiet day. We had talked about going north and exploring beaches and towns but ended up hanging around the Airbnb for much of the day. Was okay for me, but I would have liked a little more tourist stuff together on our last day. Had a couple of breakfasts but no coffee. After lunch we walked north on Kihei Rd to get shave ice at another place from last time. It was good, not quite as good as the previous time. I walked with the others back to the complex and continued south to the ABC store to buy some stamps. It was pretty warm but not hot. Did feel good to be in the shade when I returned. I read a lot on this day, Jonathan Gould's Burning Down the House. It is quite thorough and well-written so far. In the late afternoon Ann and I walked down to the beach for the last time this trip. There were a bunch of open water swimmers there along with the regular beachgoers. Back to the Airbnb, where the two of us made story fry and microwaved potatoes for dinner, trying to clean some of the food out of the refrigerator. Packing after dinner and more reading until we were all ready to head to the airport at around 8:15. This is a dark island at night, not so many streetlights on roads or highways. Got gas on the way and made it to the rental car center with no issues. Car checked in and to the gate with no problem other than my boarding pass didn't have TSA Pre-check. Not a big deal at this airport and this time, although I don't know why. We had no problems getting our stuff on the plane, and it left after a little delay, not too bad.

06-18-2026 Ocean Swim/Snorkeling/Walk

I had gone to sleep early and still woke up after 6:00, feeling quite refreshed. I started capturing my insights from the previous day's ride and had some dry toast and coffee for first breakfast. Then I went over to the beach and had a nice ocean swim, south for about 550 yds before turning around and swimming back. Nice easy pace, with swim fins. My right leg was a little sore from the previous day but not too bad.

Avg pace = 1:48/100 yds
Total distance = 1145 yds
Elapsed moving time = 20:41 (Zepp)
Avg heartrate = 140 bpm (perhaps)
Relative Effort = 18 (perhaps)
SWOLF = 85
Avg stroke rate = 26 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.08 yds

When I got back, Emily invited us to breakfast at Kihei Caffe, so I had a quick shower and we walked down there. I ate light but had more coffee. Back to the Airbnb after that, where I continued updating my blog. We headed to Maui harbor for a snorkeling cruise, arriving around 12:30. Got on the boat just fine, Ann and I were lucky enough to find seats in the shade. The ride over to Molokini took about an hour, and the boat captain circled the island before stopping and setting anchor in the protected bay. They provided snorkels and masks, and I used my own fins. Initially there weren't too many fish in the water, but as time passed we saw more. I'd brought my action camera with its waterproof housing, and that worked great. Took a lot of videos, some were decent, many were not. The coral reef was at about 15-20' depth, so we were far away from where many of the fish were swimming. And there still weren't a huge number of fish even after a while. Still, it was a beautiful day, very calm and good for snorkeling. We were 8n the water for almost an hour, then we got back on the boat and ate a light lunch. Started heading back to Maui Harbor, and Marta the photographer pitched her photos pretty heavily. We were sitting right by her, so maybe the pitch seemed more intense to us. The overall cruise was longer than advertised and a great experience. We got back to the car and drove back after that. Cleaned up, relaxed for a bit, then went out to dinner to celebrate Caleb's birthday. Stopped for souvenirs and a postcard on the way back, then the rest of the evening was quiet.

06-17-2026 Haleakala Ride

Well, here goes. This was quite a challenging day. I had packed my stuff up for the Haleakala ride the night before, so I got dressed, had a bread stick and a banana for breakfast and loaded up on fluids as well. Had carbs for the ride as well as Gatorade in bottles along with the powder. I was rolling around 5:37, glad that I had arranged to get the bike the day before (wouldn't have made it otherwise). I headed up Kihei Rd all the way past the barriers (there had been road flooding by a bridge but it was passable) and over to the road to Lahaina. A right turn there got me to the Maui Veterans Hwy, with I took north, using a pretty nice bike path that avoided having to ride on the shoulder. Over to Hansen Rd, by an old sugar mill (not sure if it's still operational), which gave me a shortcut to the Hana Hwy. I was on this just a short while until I turned onto the Haleakala Hwy. At this point the road wasn't really built for bikes, but its shoulder was protected by rumble strips and fairly wide. Not too long after the turn the grade started to tilt up. I stopped for a break around 7:00, ate a banana, and took a pic of the mountain covered in clouds (foreshadowing). From here on, I tried to stop every hour or so for a short break to eat something, drink some fluids, and have a short rest. As the ride progressed, especially above 8000' I found myself stopping more frequently than that. I continued past the turnoff onto the Old Haleakala Hwy, and the road became the Kula Hwy. Stayed on this until I came to another intersection with the Haleakala Hwy. I figured I was getting close to the end of places to get water or drinks, so I backtracked on the Old Haleakala Hwy to a convenience store in Pukalani and bought a bottle of blue Gatorade. The two ladies in the store were very sweet, told me "God bless" as I left, which was a nice touch. I drank some of the bottle and used the rest to fill up NY empty water bottle and top the other one off. Then I rode back to the intersection and continued straight onto the Haleakala Hwy. This road had been recently repaved and was in excellent condition. I was at about mile 21 at this point, having climbed around 1700'. The road tipped up just a little bit and wound through some beautiful forested areas. Somewhere around this point I rode through the entrance gate to Haleakala NP, talked briefly with the ranger there (she didn't know the temperature at the top but said it was still socked in). This was the most scenic part of the ride, unless you are into barren landscapes and volcanic features. The road wound up to Kula (maybe there is a place to get water there, I didn't check) and turned onto Crater Rd. At this point I was at mile 28 and 3400'. Here is where the real climbing began. Initially it was in the form of a series of tight switchbacks with somewhat flat turns and steeper ramps, which went on for around seven miles and topped out at 5900'. This section also took me above the tree line and into the clouds, where I basically stayed, with brief intervals of sun breaking through, all the way to the top. I rode along an upward sloping ridgeline, winding but not switchbacks, that briefly went through a wooded area and lasted a little less than three miles to get to 6800'. I was definitely wearing down by this point, around 38 miles in. Probably also feeling the effects of the thinner air at this altitude. This next set of switchbacks was grueling. They weren't so steep by they seemed to last forever before coming up to the turns. Each ramp was a mile or more, and this section was a little over eight miles long, takimge up to 9200' and 46+ miles. Some folks at the last turn cheered me on and congratulated me on making the climb, but they missed the point that this last two and a half miles was the hardest. It followed another ridgeline up past the visitor center, and beyond this point it got steep again. I was gassed by this point and took it really slowly, stopping at least once to catch my breath and gather my strength. On this stretch my quads started to twitch, so I knew I was nearly at my limit without stopping for a longer rest. I made it to the parking lot just below the observation building, resting for a bit before attempting to climb the stairs there (I should have ridden up the paved path, but the thought of climbing on my bike at this point was off limits). A number of people congratulated me on the ride, one of them asked me how long it had taken, and when I told her (7.5 hours) was pretty amazed. It was overcast at the top, so not much to see down-country. Took the stairs to the observation building, shot some pics there, and recorded a get-well soon video for Audrey. Topped out at a little less than 49 miles and 9900'. I ended up riding down the path back to the parking lot and stopped to put my jacket on to keep warm on the descent. Little did I know. Started down, and it was initially fine, although chilly from the air temperature. I had drunk all of my water, so I stopped at the visitor center on the way down, went to the bathroom, and refilled my bottles. Then I was rolling on the descent again. At one pout I went through a thermal zone as it got more cloudy and the temperature rose. I thought, "This is manageable." But it didn't last, got colder and denser in fog until I had to slow down just to be able to see. At times the visibility was less than 100 yds just to see car headlights coming. Then it got worse. It started out as mist, then drizzle, then steady rain, finally roads so wet that I was riding through water. This continued, off and on, for quite a while. It would subside, the fog would lessen, and I would think/hope that I had ridden through the worst, only to enter another cloud bank. I was cold, had numb hands and toes, and shivering, definitely in an uncomfortable and unhappy state. It got perhaps a little lighter as I continued the descent but never completely let up until I came off Crater Rd around mile 70. I had stopped a couple of times at turnoffs to rest my arms and get a little break. At one point, when it was really raining, I stopped under some trees and contemplated my miserable condition. Here is where I thought about stopping and calling Ann for a pickup. But I persevered and kept going until mile 70.Then it was like a light switch, was still overcast but I had dropped below the clouds. It had started to dry out and warm up by this point and kept doing so until the end. At mile 76 or so, just above Pukalani, I turned off onto a smaller road, Kealaloa Ave, then veered to the right shortly after, onto Hanamu Rd, which took me down to Olinda Rd. I turned left here, and the gradient was descending with few sharp turns and was a real thrill to ride. This was the most fun section of the ride, which I had hoped would include more descending like this. It took me through Makawao, where the road name changed to Baldwin Ave, and dropped me into Paia. I was watching my route map on Strava and was thrilled when it showed I was getting close to the bike shop. It was less than 10 miles of descending without cold, fog, or rain, but it was glorious. I'd called Ann and let her know my ETA, turns out they were very close to where I was. Got to the shop, took my gear off the bike and checked it in, while they looked for a parking spot.

Relative Effort = 269 (242)
Training Load = 346
Intensity = 65%

I also mapped out the essentially unabated climb that started a little bit after I turned onto the Haleakala Hwy and ended at the crater summit. Here are the stats, broken down by dividing the total distance of 34.7 mi into 10 segments (i.e. divide the total number of 1 sec data points by 10 and average for each decade).

Power       HR              Ratio      Gradient
180 W      140 bpm      1.293      4.55%
156 W      136 bpm      1.150      5.09%
165 W      141 bpm      1.171      5.58%
160 W      140 bpm      1.143      6.29%
161 W      143 bpm      1.121      6.92%
148 W      142 bpm      1.040      6.55%
137 W      139 bpm      0.987      5.76%
128 W      134 bpm      0.950      5.50%
124 W      137 bpm      0.909      5.74%
133 W      142 bpm      0.936      6.28%

Some other stats for this segment, which doesn't exist on Strava: my elapsed time was 5:08, avg power was 149 W, avg speed was 6.8 mph. avg heartrate was 139 bpm, total elevation gain was 9990', and overall avg gradient was 5.4%.

Then I walked over to where they were parked, to drop off my gear and started changing into dry clothes. We walked from there to a Mexican food restaurant for lunch. I was not hungry at all,but the two happy hour margaritas (not too much alcohol in them) really hit the spot. Chips were pretty bad, I had a couple of them. We walked back to the car after lunch and drove a little further east to Turtle Beach, got out and walked to where there were a bunch of sea turtles resting on the sand. A guy also had his pet goat tethered up, which was an attraction in itself. There was another guy spinning records on a portable stereo, so it was a minor scene apart from the turtles. Emily drove us back to the Airbnb after that, and the hot shower felt pretty wonderful. I still didn't eat much throughout the rest of the afternoon and evening, was still recovering from the effort. Legs were sore, especially going up and down any stairs or ramp. I had a very short nap but generally stayed awake rather than dozing off and sleeping for a long time. Evening was quiet.

06-16-2026 Walk

Planned easy day before the big challenge on Wednesday. I woke up and read for a while, had some leftover grilled food for breakfast. Later on we walked up to a little marketplace area and strolled through the shops. We stopped at Foodland and got a couple of items before Ann and I walked back, while Emily and Caleb got food and had lunch in the park by the ocean. I read some more in the afternoon, avoided taking a nap, and drove to pick up my rental bike in Paia. I got the bike from Maui Sunriders, where I had reserved a Scott Addict. They didn't have that bike, so they gave me a Trek Domaine (Shimano 105 DI2 50/34 and 11/34), which had carbon wheels, wider tires, and weighed more than the Scott. Other than that, the rental went off without a hitch, and I saw some of the roads I will ride on from Kihei. It will take a little longer to get to the point where I can turn south and head up. So many factors could turn this ride into a bigger challenge. Drove back to the Airbnb and plotted out my route on Strava, ending at the bike shop in Paia. In the late afternoon we drove (Emily) down to a fancy walking outdoor mall in Wailea and watched a hula demonstration. The dances and dancers were varied and excellent through and through, a quite pleasant free experience. We ate at Black Rock Pizza on Kihei for dinner, it was okay, a good carb-loading session with breadsticks too. Back to the Airbnb, where I packed up my stuff into a fanny pack, not sure about taking the bottle of water, due to the weight. It will be a gametime decision in the morning.

06/15/2026 Ocean Swim/Walk

Slept pretty well, felt improved when I woke up (<!>) but my belly was still a little tender. I walked down to the beach and went for another ocean swim, similar path on the way south, where I paused for a bit before turning around and trying to retrace that route. I was more successful, basically swam back close to where I had gotten in. But somehow my watch didn't restart the activity at the turnaround point, so Strava only shows the first half of the swim. I used my fins again, made good time throughout.

Avg pace = 1:46/100 yds (first 587 yds)
Total distance = 1200 yds (estimated)
Elapsed moving time = 10:58 (first 587 yds)
Avg heartrate = 142 bpm (for the first 587 yds, perhaps)
Relative Effort = 9 (for the first 587 yds, perhaps)
SWOLF = 83 (for the first 587 yds, not sure why it's so high)
Avg stroke rate = 25 bpm (for the first 587 yds)
Avg pull distance = 2.15 yds (for the first 587 yds, see above)

Got back to the Airbnb, and the others were up. I had some cereal for breakfast, then emi9drove us up to a very small farmer's market, where we walked around for a bit and I bought a cup of coffee. Then we waited for a while in line at a bakery, Sugar Beach, next door Emily had found that had malasadas and other baked goods. The malasadas were good but really dense. I had two, and that was enough. We drove back another way via the highway and ended up stopping at Ross to walk through and examine the merchandise. That was a funny little outing, there are some strange goods sold at Ross. Got some groceries at the Safeway next door, then Emily drove us back. We hung out for a while then went down to the beach for a swim. The wind had kicked up, and the surf was definitely bigger. Emily and Caleb were already out in the water when we got there, and I joined them beyond the break where it was a little calmer. Ann went back to get her swim shoes and took forever, returning with the boogie board as well. She tried it a couple of times, but the break was too close to the shore. Eventually she came out beyond the break as well. I ended up staying out there too long, got my face sunburned enough to notice it. We walked back to the Airbnb and showered. Emily said they were going to get some lunch, and I made the mistake of inviting us along, wasn't thinking it through. So that lunch wasn't so great, as she was bothered, rightfully so. She was quiet for most of the rest of the day and evening. I had a little nap and read quite a bit, watched some TV. No dinner needed after the late lunch.

06-14-2026 Ocean Swim/Walks

I seemed to feel a little better early in the morning and got some decent sleep in the night. My fever broke and I slept until just before 6:00. I'm guessing it was something in my digestive tract, perhaps a partial blockage that cleared. Could have been a UTI, but I'm guessing it would have taken longer to get better. There is also the possibility of it being a kidney stone, although the pain was more in my belly than back by my kidneys. In any case, I'll keep an eye out for any further symptoms and be glad that it is in the past, at least for now. Thought I would walk down to the beach and maybe go for a swim if I was up to it. Packed my stuff into the dry bag and walked to the nearest beach. I unpacked my stuff and walked into the water, putting my swim fins on and heading out beyond the break, turning south there and swimming for a bit. Slow strokes and regular breathing, not looking to stress the system. I swam out for about 500 yds and turned around, getting back to the shore sooner than planned and walking the rest of the way to where I had left my stuff.

Avg pace = 2:08/100 yds (didn't pause my watch during the pauses while swimming)
Total distance = 708 yds
Elapsed moving time = 15:09 (Zepp)
Avg heartrate = 135 bpm (perhaps)
Relative Effort = 8 (perhaps)
SWOLF = 95
Avg stroke rate = 21 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.14 yds

Felt okay in the swim, belly is still a little tender. I walked back to the Airbnb in my bare feet, that was occasionally painful. Got back, and everybody was up. I took a quick shower, had some cereal for breakfast, and hung around the Airbnb in the morning. Still not feeling 100% but better. In mid-afternoon we all walked, in the rain, to get shave ice and walk through the ABC Store. It got pretty heavy, so we waited under an overhang until it subsided. Shave ice was good, the store had tacky souvenir stuff and some food selections. I had a nap after we got back. In the evening we grilled some fish, tofu, and vegetables on outdoor gas grills at the complex. Turned out okay, not as tasty as charcoal-grilled food. The rest of the evening was quiet.

06-13-2026 Walk

This was a weird day and not a great one. I woke up after a very fitful night of sleeping. Feeling a little out for sorts but not too bad. We walked to a nearby cafe for breakfast, food was decent, staff were very friendly, prices were high (as expected). We walked back, and I started to feel a little worse. Went to a Foodtown to pick up groceries for the week (Yikes!) and then drove back to the Airbnb. The others decided to walk to the beach, but I was starting to feel worse, so I stayed back and slept. It didn't make me feel any better, I was achy and starting to run a slight fever. Pain in my belly, not sure from what, so I stayed in bed most of the afternoon and evening. Was originally scheduled to go disco dancing with the others in the evening, but that wasn't going to happen. They went and had a good time while I tried to rest and feel better.

06-12-2026 Run/Swim

Woke up around 5:30, it was already pretty light outside. I love this part of the year for that reason. I had gotten up in the night and had a bowl of cereal and a banana, probably too much caffeine the previous day. Got ready for a run, and I started around 5:40 after stretching out my hamstrings in particular. Down by the park, beginning at a faster pace than usual. I did the 5k route and had significant negative splits throughout, including a 7:12 third mile, where I was working pretty hard. Finished the 5k and walked uphill the rest of the way home.

Avg pace = 7:34/mi
Total distance = 3.17 mi
Elapsed moving time = 23:59
Avg heartrate = 135 bpm
Relative Effort = 14

Had a little time after I got back, so I started cleaning up my cycling analysis program code, taking out some redundancies in the code and replacing them with a common function. Got that done successfully, and I packed up my stuff for a swim at the WWC. I met Avi there, didn't have a lot of time, so I ended up swimming four 250s at tempo, followed by a cool-down 100, with a pull buoy. My stroke got increasingly ragged as time passed, so I still need a lot more work to build my endurance at high pace. Here are the split times: 4:13, 4:10, 4:19, 4:16, 1:47. I did try mixing in breathing every three strokes, and at the end of the 250s I was breathing every two strokes and pushing hard in an effort to sprint. I didn't record the last 100 on my watch.

Avg pace = 1:43/100 yds (Video, not counting pauses)
Total distance = 1100 yds
Elapsed moving time = 18:54 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 144 bpm (just for the first 1000, perhaps)
Relative Effort = 27 (for the first 1000, perhaps)
SWOLF = 35 (for the first 1000)
Avg stroke rate = 23 bpm (for the first 1000, more strokes to go faster)
Avg pull distance = 2.35 yds (for the first 1000, see above)

Got done with the swim and took a shower in the locker room, then changed to ride over to the new HP San Diego site and meet Hongwei and Paula for a tour of the facilities. I saw a lot of folks I knew, which was cool. The space is definitely more compact but workable, I think, given the charter of the HPSD site. Had coffee in the break area and saw more folks stopping by or walking through. All in all it was a very nice little diversion, I'm thankful to Hongwei for volunteering to give us the tour. I rode home after that, did a little more packing and organizing of stuff for the Hawaii trip before riding my scooter down to Mom's Pizza in Sorrento Valley to meet some ex-LEP folks for lunch. At the lunch were: James, Rima, Kyle, Dan, Bor-Jiunn, Hongwei, Anna, Rachel, and her husband and baby daughter. I talked mostly to Dan, Anna, Rachel, and her husband. Food was good, so was the service. Anna and Dan are now working down in Sorrento Valley. Took 35-40 minutes to get there, stopped to get money from the CU on the way back. I was pretty weary when I got home but needed to finish packing and checking my travel list. Got it all done without much time to spare. Emily and Caleb showed up around 3:30, we packed the car, and then we drove down to the airport parking lot. A little traffic on the 163 near I-8 but not as much as feared. We got to the airport by 4:30, and of course my phone wouldn't connect. Had to restart it twice before it started working, but we got through security okay and to the gate with plenty of time. Caleb gate-checked his bag, so we got to board with an earlier group. The flight wasn't full, Ann and I had empty middle seats next to us. Got free high-speed Starlink internet, courtesy of T-Mobile, it worked great. Flight was long, I dozed a number of times. We arrived early, even though we left late, and I hustled over to the Thrifty rental car counter to make sure I got there before it closed. No issues there, I got the car and waited for the others to arrive on the tram after picking up their luggage. Drove to the Airbnb in Kihei with no issues and got into the place fine, then it was to sleep after a long day.

06-11-2026 Ride

Woke up before 5:00 and got up a little after 5:00. Had a bowl of cereal, got ready for a bike ride, and emptied the dishwasher. I left the house and started down the hill before realizing I didn't have water bottles. So I turned around, got the bottles, and headed out down the hill. I left around 5:40, down by the park and over Lake Hodges on the freeway, turning left on Via Rancho Pkwy. I rode to Felicita Rd and took it past Felicita Park and over to Gamble Ln. Thought about taking this up the hill, but I had enough time to take the longer route via Bernardo Ave, whose more gradual grade was a better fit for what I am training for. Up to 11th Ave and then down to Del Dios Rd, taking a left and then a right on Avenida del Diablo. Over to Citracado Pkwy, right turn, then a left on Harmony Grove Village Pkwy. I rode down to Harmony Grove Rd, turned left and took it to Harmony Grove Village Community Park. The gate was locked, and I thought Paula was driving to our meet-up spot, so I sent her a text to meet at the nearby park (4th of July Park) in the neighborhood. I rode up there and waited for a short while, then she called me and said she was by the park (it turns out she was at the original park, she'd ridden there). So I rode back down to the park and connected with her, heading west on Harmony Grove Rd. I dialed my pace back on this general descent, doing a lot of coasting until we turned onto Elfin Forest Rd, where I stayed slow and rode with her on the first climb. I got out ahead of her on the second climb, in part because she dropped her chain. We rode to Schoolhouse Way, a new road for me, and turned right, climbing past San Elijo Rd and turning right on Lighthouse Rd. We took a left on Misty Sea Way, then used an access path to get to Pearl Dr, which seems to be service road in this section. It got pretty steep, up to 15% at times, and we had to get past a gate by a cul-de-sac, continuing the climb for a little longer. I got to the top and rode back down a little bit to stop and take a video of Paula climbing up through the fog. Stayed on Pearl Dr until turning right on Ruby Ct, then left on Wild Canyon Dr to get to Tucana Dr. Right turn there, down to Vega Way, taking a left there and another left on Lyra Ln, which got us back to Tucana Dr, where we took a left and then a right, staying on Tucana Dr (kinda confusing street names here) to get over to Double Peak Dr. Instead of turning left and heading straight up, we turned right, rode down to San Elijo Rd and took the bike path on the west side of the road to get up to Ledge St. This climb was gradual, as it was just after we turned left here and rode through the pedestrian gate. Then it got steep and stayed that way for a while until it flattened out just before another gate across the road. Past this gate there was a little descent before we connected with Double Creek Dr just before the water tower. It's steep here, I measured 13-14%, but not too long at this gradient before decreasing to below 10%. To the sign, and I went to the end of the parking lot before turning around and meeting Paula just coming up. We stopped for a short break in the shade, I went to the bathroom, then we took some pics by the sign before riding down. The descent wasn't as bad as I remembered, but then again I rode the brakes more than usual on the steep parts. Back down to San Elijo Rd, turning left and climbing back to Ledge St before taking the descent down Twin Oaks Valley Rd. As I was riding down this at high speed, a lady in a Tesla started moving into the bike lane and scared the crap out of me. I had a moment where I thought I was going to lose control but kept it together. I caught up to her at a light and told her off, and she was apologetic (better). But that really got my adrenaline going! We finished riding down the hill and stopped for a coffee and hot chocolate at the Starbucks in the shopping center to the left. Nice conversation as usual. We continued the ride (it was starting to warm up), taking Discovery St to Barham Dr, then turning right on La Moree Rd. Took this gradual climb to the top and then the steeper descent back to Barham Dr. Right turn there, riding more slowly and taking it to Meyers Ave, turning right there and then right again on Corporate Dr. A left on Progress Pl got us to Country Club Dr, where we turned right. This road is in bad shape, so we suffered for a bit until turning right onto Mt Whitney Rd. If anything, this road is in even worse shape, and it started to tilt up a fair amount just after we got past a gate in the road. It dropped us into the top of Harmony Grove Village. We turned right on Long Trot Dr and then left on Wilgen Dr, enjoying an easy descent back to Harmony Grove Rd. We split there, Paula had to climb back to her house, so she had some hard work left. I retraced my route (after stopping at the park to go to the bathroom) back to Citracado Pkwy and stayed on it up to Scenic Trail Way, using that road to get to the top of Gamble Ln. Since they paved this road, the descent is really nice, but I still rode the brakes for most of it. Down to Bernardo Ave, turning right and then left on Hamilton Ln to get back to Felicita Rd. To Via Rancho Pkwy and the normal way home from there. Legs felt good at the end of the ride, even though it had some pretty steep sections to navigate.

Avg speed = 13.2 mph. Total mileage = 39.2 mi
Avg power = 123 W. Weighted avg power = 160 W

Got home and had an early, fairly light lunch. In the afternoon I started working on code to implement calculation of the Training Load metric from Strava into my cycling analysis program. First step was to gather the power zone data and bin it into the appropriate categories. It took a while, but I finally got it to display the same numbers as Strava shows. Next step is to create a dataset with Strava Training Load numbers and those power zone values to see if there is a linear set of equations that calculate TL. This work took me much of the afternoon and some of the early evening. I also watched a little TV.

06-10-2026 Ride

Slept pretty well, no nap the previous day. I got up around 5:30 and got ready for a shorter bike ride at an easy pace. Headed out a little after 6:00, didn't get far before I realized I had forgotten to put my derailleur batteries in. So I had to climb back home, get the batteries, and start all over. Down the hill and by the park, over to Pomerado Rd, where I started up, again not pushing the pace. It was good temperature for riding, I was in short sleeves. I ended up riding to the top of Pomerado Rd, again taking it easy, in first gear for the most part, on the last climb. Then I took Cypress Canyon Park Dr to Angelique St and rode back down to Scripps-Poway Pkwy. Continued down the hill on Springbrook Dr to Sabre Springs Pkwy and turned left there. I stayed on it until turning onto Evening Creek Dr and taking that little spur until it reconnected to Sabre Springs Pkwy. From there I followed the time trial route all the way back home. Slow and steady the whole way.

Avg speed = 14.6 mph. Total mileage = 24.5 mi
Avg power = 121 W. Weighted avg power = 150 W
Total elevation gain = 1720'
Avg heartrate = 107 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 20
Training Load = 85
Intensity = 68%

Got home and ate a light breakfast, did the dishes, and relaxed around the house until I needed to start getting ready for my volunteer shift at the hospital. Showered and shaved, then headed over early so I could stop at Walmart and pick up some motor oil for my scooter. That went okay, but of course they didn't have the brand I wanted on the shelves, even though it was supposed to be there. I got some that should work and headed to the hospital. Ate my lunch there and went to the ED. Shift was pretty normal, I had periods where I was pretty busy and others where I just waited around. There was a guy in Room 7 who didn't want to be there, so security officers were there to make sure he didn't leave. It was uncomfortable for the latter part of the shift. Got busy near the end of the shift, as usual, but I was able to leave on time. Rode home and had a quiet evening. I talked to Ben before dinner, he had a CAT scan with contrast in the morning and will know about the results next week.

06-09-2026 Swim

Slept pretty well, although I did wake up hungry early and eat some cereal and a banana. I got back to sleep and woke up after 6:00 (<!>). Continued working on my cycling analysis program to format the segment data page a little more cleanly, including use of a monospaced font to get better alignment for the numbers. Then I got ready for a swim at the WWC, arriving around 9:00. Summer season is kicking in, so there were a lot more kids. I was able to get a lane in the pool, lane 5. Swam 1500 yds, the last 500 with swim fins. I paused my watch after the first 1000 and forgot to restart it, so it and Strava only recorded the first 1000. Here are the splits for the three 500s: 9:33, 9:31, 8:47. During this workout I focused on keeping my strokes long, and I practiced breathing every three strokes while keeping long strokes. Maybe it helped a little bit, but it still feels unnatural.

Avg pace = 1:51/100 yds (Video, not counting pauses)
Total distance = 1500 yds
Elapsed moving time = 27:51 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 143 bpm (just for the first 1000, perhaps)
Relative Effort = 19 (for the first 1000, perhaps)
SWOLF = 37 (for the first 1000)
Avg stroke rate = 20 bpm (for the first 1000)
Avg pull distance = 2.47 yds (for the first 1000)

Ann cut my hair later in the morning, and we went to Pizza Nova in San Marcos for lunch. It was okay, pricey and too salty with the Kalamata olives. Stopped at Walmart on the way home and got a couple of things for the trip, along with discovering that some items are cheaper to have delivered from the store than they are to buy in store. Weird. The rest of the afternoon and evening were quiet. I read, did some cleanup of my cycling analysis program code for displaying segment stats, and watched some TV.

06-08-2026 Palomar South and East Grade Ride

This was a challenging ride day. I woke up a little after 4:00 and got up around 4:30. Got dressed for a ride, cleaned the dishes and started the dishwasher, then I gathered up my food and water bottles (one with Gatorade) and headed out. I drove to Harrah's Rincon and parked in the parking lot, got there a little before 5:40. It was cool but not cold, and there wasn't a marine layer I was going to have to ride through like last time. I was rolling a little after 5:45, heading up to the 76. My left glute muscle was tight and a little sore at the beginning of the ride, but it loosened up okay. I didn't push really hard on the climb up to South Grade Rd, but I was still averaging over 200 W. Will need to dial this effort back when I ride next week. I had arm warmers on, but once I got on South Grade Rd I pushed them down, as it was a pretty nice temperature to ride in by that time. Rode up to the top in about 1:38 (I stopped once on the climb to take a picture), have done it faster but was pleased with this time. I kept going over to East Grade Rd without stopping, climbed a little more, then started the descent. I stopped soon after to take another picture, then took the descent pretty fast but still about a minute slower than last time. I wasn't as cold this time, I had put my arm warmers back on. Down to the bottom and the intersection with Hwy 76, where I stopped for a short break, got out the package of sweet potatoes that Rob had given me, and stuffed some in my mouth before starting the ascent on East Grade Rd. Those things are dense, I think I worked on chewing and swallowing them for the first two miles up. Started pretty strong but slowed down a fair amount on this second climb. I was in first or second gear nearly all of the time except for the short sections where it flattened out or descended. The last couple of miles, from mile 8 to mile 10.5 or so, were a challenge. My legs were just tired, and I couldn't generate a lot of power to put into them. I was glad when I got to the short descent to Mother's Kitchen. Did the East Grade ascent in about 1:18, pretty slow. The general store was closed, but the owner (we have met him before) pointed out that the restroom was open (I used it) and would have opened the store if I needed something. Nice guy. I don't think any vehicles passed me, either way, on the way down South Grade Rd. I was pretty fast as the beginning but slowed down somewhat especially when I got back onto the 76.  Down the sweeping turns, where I tried to brake less and keep more speed. There was a road construction crew near the roundabout, and I had to stop and wait for several minutes before getting the all-clear to continue. There is a Strava segment for riding up from the taco shop to the top, then down the East Grade, and reversing back to the taco shop. I how have the fourth fastest time for my age group on this segment, and that includes several rest stops. Back to the car, was glad to have completed this ride without any significant issues or mishaps.

Avg speed = 12.4 mph. Total mileage = 49.6 mi
Avg power = 156 W. Weighted avg power = 180 W
Total elevation gain = 7240' (new PR, soon to be eclipsed)
Avg heartrate = 131 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 145
Training Load = 277
Intensity = 82%

I stopped at the convenience store and got a Pepsi in a cup, then drove home from there. Legs felt tired throughout the day, but otherwise I recovered fairly quickly. Got home around 10:45 and had some time to relax in the late morning before heading over in early afternoon to meet Joe Swoboda at the Bear Roots Tavern. I had a root beer there, and we talked about general topics before focusing on plans for the upcoming backpacking trip, now scheduled for 7/12 - 7/16. There are still a couple of options for routes and regions to hike in, but it looks like the days should be fairly manageable regarding hiking distance. Headed home and had a quiet afternoon, including a short nap. I then worked on adding the functionality into my cycling analysis program to break down selected ride segments into decades for assessing power output and heartrate. The basic algorithm implementation went pretty quickly, but I fooled around with the formatting and display output for a while. Still a little more work needed, but the functionality is now there. Read for a bit in the evening before going to sleep.

06-07-2026 Run/Walk

Slept well, no nap on an otherwise busy day is a good recipe. Woke up a little before 6:00 and got ready for an easy-paced, slightly longer run. Down by the park and around three times before heading back. Only my last mile had a significant negative split. I stretched before the run, and the stretching is uncomfortable, at the least. It has been too long since I stretched regularly, and it shows. I walked the last bit up the hill after running a little more than four miles.

Avg pace = 9:03/mi
Total distance = 4.11 mi
Elapsed moving time = 37:13
Avg heartrate = 118 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 8

Got home and cooled down a bit before having some breakfast, shaving, showering, and getting ready for church. Ann was playing bells, and we had tickets from Aysha to go to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for lunch and walking around. Church service was okay, still not my preferred way of spending Sunday mornings anymore. I talked to a couple of people briefly in the patio, including Joe Swoboda and John Borman. After Ann put the bells up we drove over to the Safari Park, parked, and walked in with no problems. We went initially to the new elephant enclosure, which is quite spacious and nice. Watched the elephants, including a new male who was recently introduced into the enclosure. Then we walked over to where the lunch presented by Charles Schwab was being served. I thought it might be really busy, but we got there early enough to avoid any crowds, get something to drink, and grab our food from the buffet line. Talked to a couple of people who sat at our table and said hi to Aysha (Ann chatted with her for a longer time). Then we walked to see the gorillas, then down to the Africa Tram, saw it was a 70-minute wait, and decided not to stand in line. We walked around the Africa Loop, mildly interesting, but it was getting hot. We both agreed it was time to leave, so we walked back to the car. On the drive home I forgot I'd parked my scooter at the church until Ann reminded me, so I had to backtrack a little bit to get over there and retrieve it. Got home, was quite tired, but I was able to limit my nap to a short time. The rest of the afternoon was quiet. I talked to Mom in the late afternoon, she was weak but perked up during the call. Still getting over the effects of last week's adverse reaction to the antibiotics. After dinner I talked to Ross for quite a while. Most of the conversation was good, but he was in a mood, and it got tense for a time when we talked about his relationship with Ben. We got through it with no harsh words spoken. Ann and I watched TV after that, and that was the evening.

06-06-2026 Ride

Woke up earlier than planned, so I took my time getting ready for the Bisikleta ride. I had some cereal for breakfast and unloaded the dishwasher, also put the few dirty dishes in. Got my food and water gathered up and headed out around 6:50. Didn't put a lot of power into the ride over there, which took me through the neighborhood and then the extended route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood, including rides up to the top of Camino San Thomas and Four Gee Rd. Andy (new Toyota Four Runner) and Perse were already there, and James and Paula showed up soon after. Rob, Fritz, and Jed A. were there at the start as well. We headed down CdS, and along the way we found Kamal, who must have started before us. Over to Torrey Meadows Dr, where we turned right and took it over the 56 before connecting to Torrey Santa Fe Rd, taking a left there and riding back to CdS. We used that road to get to the 56 bike path, heading west for a while until turning off to get to Rancho Santa Fe Farms Rd, where we turned right and took it into a fancy part of Fairbanks Ranch. I had forgotten that there is a short, sharp climb on this road right after the first descent. Perse and Fritz attacked on this climb, and I didn't have a suitable response right away. I eventually caught Perse but couldn't do the same with Fritz before we turned left onto Rancho Diegueno Rd. There is a little rise at the turn, but it is followed by a great, winding descent that you can take without braking if you are a little brave. This took us down to San Dieguito Rd, where we turned left and rode in a ragged pace line for a while. This might have been Paula's first time in a pace line, certainly the first time with Bisikleta. We rode over to ECR, turning right and taking it to VdlV, where we turned left and headed toward the coast. For a change I had us turn right onto Cedros Ave and take it through Solana Beach until we used Lomas Santa Fe to get to PCH. Once we got onto this road Fritz and Rob were pushing the pace pretty hard. I stayed with them, but it was an effort. We rode through Cardiff and turned right on Chesterfield Dr, then right again on San Elijo Ave. James and I were out front on this stretch. The road connects into Manchester Ave, which we followed through the turn (me and Fritz in the lead, with Jed coming up) and over to RSF Rd. We stopped at the corner and had our break at Champagne Bakery (I bought coffee for Andy and Perse). From there we continued on RSF Rd to La Bajada, where we climbed toward RSF village. Onto Los Morros, where we started a descent. I was in the lead and turned onto San Elijo Ave, others followed, but Kamal missed the turn. He needed to get back home sooner than we did, so we ended up letting him know to continue on this shorter route back. The rest of us rode up to Via de Fortuna, turned left, and took this gradual climb all the way to El Camino del Norte. Rob had gotten out ahead of the rest of us, so Fritz and I tracked him down and passed him. I was hanging with Fritz, but it was an effort. Got to the turn and headed right, taking this road down to Paseo Delicias, where we turned right (sun was starting to come out around this time) and headed back to VdlV. A left turn there, and I waited for everybody to make the turn. Andy had dropped his chain, so I was pretty far back by this time. We rode down to Via de Santa Fe and then took it and El Apajo back to San Dieguito Rd. I had already started passing folks before the Three Witches climb, and I had a tailwind to help me along on this climb. Caught James pretty quickly, then Rob around the second part of the climb, and I saw Fritz in the distance. I closed the gap but couldn't catch him before we got back to CdS. He and I waited after the turn for the others to show up, Andy was last, along with Jed serving as the sweeper. We all rode back from here to Paseo del Sur and used it to get back to the Target parking lot. Fritz was in the lead here, along with me, and Jed was hanging with us as well. We all pushed a pretty brisk pace all the way back to the starting point, and it was an effort for me. I stayed around and waited for everybody to make it back before I headed home the new normal way. Again, I had the benefit of a tailwind coming from the southwest to help me along, otherwise I would have taken the shorter route. Felt good on this ride, legs were still fairly fresh at the end, even though I pushed harder throughout the ride than I've done in a while.

Got home, had some lunch, then Ann and I drove around 1:20 over to Old Poway Park for a San Diego Folk Heritage Society concert by the Gazebo. We saw two acts: The Winter Sisters (a trio of female singer/songwriters - Cathryn Beeks, Bonnie Nichols, and Sande Lollis) and Fast Heart Mart (Martin Stamper, a banjo player). The latter act was better, but neither one was good enough that I would go back to see them. Drove home after the concert and had a quiet rest of the afternoon and evening. Ann and I watched some TV after dinner.

06-05-2026 Run/Swim

Slept pretty well, woke up before 5:00 (<!>). I got up a little after 6:00 and got ready for a run with Heather. Stretched more than usual, will see if it helps. We ran down to the park and then twice around the lower-level figure eight circuit I had mapped out before running back and making the turn onto Aguamiel Rd before we stopped, having gotten to 5k. Was a relaxed pace for me, but we got a little faster after the first mile.

Avg pace = 10:03/mi
Total distance = 3.22 mi
Elapsed moving time = 32:21
Avg heartrate = 112 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 6

Got back, had some toast for breakfast and chatted a little bit with Heather, Kathy, and Ann before getting ready for a swim with Avi at the WWC, meeting around 9:00. We got there just in time, had two lanes next to each other before the other lanes filled up. We did a warmup 200, then four 250s at tempo. Here are the times for the 200 and four 250s: 3:45, 4:18. 4:29, 4:24, 4:26. I was really flailing on the last 250, not much energy left, poor style, and lots of strokes. Avi really pushed in the last 250, got close to 4:00 I'm guessing. Then I got out to let Blaine have the lane while Avi swam a cooldown 50. I forgot to set up my camera, so I used the Zepp data downloaded to Strava (pretty decent now that it excludes pauses) to make the split calculations.

Avg pace = 1:47/100 yds (Video, not counting pauses)
Total distance = 1200 yds
Elapsed moving time = 21:22 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 119 bpm (seems low)
Relative Effort = 10 (also low)
SWOLF = 35
Avg stroke rate = 22 bpm (more strokes to try and keep a high pace)
Avg pull distance = 2.44 yds

Had some cereal when I got home, then relaxed for a while. Talked to Ben about Mom and her adverse reaction to a prescription for antibiotics. She was vomiting and having diarrhea. He had calmed down a bit, was a decent conversation, not too dramatic. In the afternoon I went out in the back yard and cut back the sumac and pepper tree shoots, including behind the fence. Never my favorite task, although the sumac bushes that I cut back to stumps aren't throwing any or many shoots off. A bigger problem are the pepper tree roots, which are all over and around the fence. In the late afternoon I rode my scooter to Esco, parked, and met the others to walk through the first Friday of Cruisin' Grand this year. Kathy and Heather love old cars, it was mildly interesting. We walked around for about an hour, then split as they headed for dinner with Kay and I rode home, stopping to pick up a burrito on the way. Watched some TV and read in the evening.

06-04-2026 Run/Walk

Woke up during the night and tried to read, but I soon fell back asleep. I woke up for good around 5:00, read for a while, then got up and got ready for a run. Left the house a little after 6:00 and headed down to the park, but I changed my path in the park in an attempt to find a flatter route to run with Heather on Friday. I was successful, but this route is more winding and likely slower. I basically ran this little double loop twice before heading back home and getting to the target 5k distance before climbing back to the house. I did stretch before the run, again it seemed to help loosen up tightness in my legs.

Avg pace = 9:04/mi
Total distance = 3.13 mi
Elapsed moving time = 28:27
Avg heartrate = 115 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 5

Got home and had some cereal and a banana for breakfast, then I made some coffee. I talked to Kathy and Heather when they came down, and Ann eventually came down as well. I went upstairs and updated my 2026 events log as well as exploring details of the planned ride up Haleakala that's coming up. Looks like I will take a similar route from Paia up to the top and back, which will add another 10 miles or so, thankfully flat, to the start of the ride from Kihei. That should still work out okay, but it is definitely going to be a challenge. The four of us left the house around 8:15 and drove down to the San Diego Zoo, arriving there right after it opened. As soon as we got in we walked over to the panda exhibit, which opened at 9:30. It was moderately interesting, we haven't seen these animals in many years. After this we walked through other parts of the zoo. The polar bear exhibit was a letdown, they weren't out in the enclosure. Other areas were okay, I was wearing a short sleeve t-shirt, and I could have used a hoodie. We ended up walking around four miles before we got back to the car. Stopped in Mira Mesa and had Chinese food at a restaurant near where Emily works. It was disappointing for me, higher prices than the food quality indicated. I was pretty tired by this point, so I had a nap after we got back home, felt much better after that. Also read in the afternoon. Worked on my cycling analysis code as well, cleaned the code up a bit and improved the display of the elevation profile so that it now shows the smoothed data. The evening was quiet. I watched a little TV and read, then went to sleep.

06/03/2026 Ride

World Bicycle Day. I woke up around 5:00, had gone to sleep early the previous night. Got ready for a ride over to John's house, where I left a little early and took an easier pace on the way. Standard route there, fairly slow and steady up that last little climb. He and Jayden were out, and Vivian came out just before we left. We headed back down the hill to Sabre Springs Pkwy, taking it over to the bike path that leads down to I-15. Then we rode up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy and went down the hill on Mercy Rd to Black Mountain Rd. Climbed from there up to the 56, John was particularly slow on this climb (he'd been doing yard work the previous days), and this was true throughout the ride. We rode to Carmel Mountain Rd and took a left there, enjoying a slight downhill over to CdS, where we turned left. We rode down to Park Village Rd, turned left there, and then headed back to Black Mountain Rd to complete a little loop. Right turn on Black Mountain Rd, taking it into Mira Mesa and up to Miramar Rd. A left turn there got us onto Pomerado Rd, and from there we took the usual way back to John's house. He was quite slow on this stretch, especially the last little climb, so I did some little loops through the neighborhood at the top of the climb while I waited for him. One minor modification to the way back, we turned on Candy Rose Way, which is more of a straight descent that I thought would be better for him. I stayed for smoothies and conversation with him and Vivian after that part of the ride. They showed me the landscaping work they are doing in their back yard., and we talked a little bit about their upcoming trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton NPs. Then I rode home, more slowly than usual, taking the usual way via Bernardo Center Dr.

Avg speed = 14.1 mph (14.3 mph). Total mileage = 40.6 mph
Avg power = 113 W. Weighted avg power = 137 W
Total elevation gain = 2600' (2660')
Avg heartrate = 106 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 31 (31)
Training Load = 128
Intensity = 62%

Ann and the others were gone when I got home, I had a little time to relax before shaving, showering, and getting ready for my volunteer shift at the hospital. Ate lunch there, as usual. A new med tech, Matthew, came in at 3:00. Other than that, there were the usual nurses and techs. Got busy at the end, so I left a little bit late and got back home around 5:00. Emily and Caleb came over for dinner with us, Kathy, and Heather, and it was a nice dinner and conversation outside, although it got a little chilly. The conversation moved inside, and I listened for a while until they started talking about reality TV shows, at which point I went into the kitchen, finished cleaning, and then went upstairs.

06/02/2026 Ride

Had set my alarm to go off at 4:45, and it woke me up. I dressed for the ride in the dark, went down and loaded up some food and water bottles (Gatorade in one), then drove down to CVR by Torrey Pines SB and parked on the street. Unloaded my bike and kitted up for the ride, then I rode up to PCH and turned left to ride down to the coast and to the base of Torrey Pines Rd. First climb was fine, I rode at moderate pace but tried to keep it smooth and consistent, knowing that there were a lot more to follow. First loop up and then back down took me about 13 minutes, from there it was a series of repeats. I stopped at the top after five climbs and ate a banana, then continued on for another five loops until stopping again and eating a granola bar. By this point I had half convinced myself to ride a total of 16 loops, depending on how I felt as I got closer to the target. I was able to ride up in third gear for the first 13 loops or so, and for the last three I switched down to second gear in the middle of the climb, where it was a little steeper. For the last climb I was in first gear for that same stretch. Legs held out, my back was a little stiff, but the descents helped me stretch a little bit. Had some issue in the latter part of the ride with numb hands, particularly my left hand, but it wasn't too much of a bother. When I got to the top on the last one, I saw that I needed a little more elevation gain to get to 7000'. So I rode down the hill and climbed into Del Mar, getting to the stoplight at Del Mar Heights Rd before taking a U-turn and riding back down to where I'd parked the car. Here are the times, power, and heartrate values for the 16 climbs, from the Strava segment results:

  1. 8:59     224 W     142 W
  2. 9:05     225 W     144 bpm
  3. 9:06     229 W     147 bpm
  4. 9:18     223 W     145 bpm
  5. 9:35     212 W     141 bpm
  6. 9:42     209 W     137 bpm (note how my average heartrate dropped as my times got longer and my average power decreased as well)
  7. 9:23     215 W     140 bpm (after warming up, I was able to generate a little more power at the same average heartrate)
  8. 9:24     213 W     138 bpm
  9. 8:56     225 W     141 bpm (this is probably where a guy passed me at the bottom, and I caught up with him, then he passed me, so I put in a bigger effort and dropped him, this was my highest ratio of power to heartrate)
  10. 9:32     205 W     138 bpm
  11. 9:12     215 W     143 bpm
  12. 9:39     205 W     141 bpm
  13. 9:57     200 W     140 bpm (in my last four or so climbs I noticed that my power-to-heartrate efficiency started to drop off)
  14. 10:14   193 W     139 bpm
  15. 9:52     198 W     139 bpm
  16. 9:46     198 W     142 bpm (nice that my last climb wasn't my slowest)
From my analysis, I was more efficient at the start as I was warming up and at my freshest (first two climbs), then I dropped into a steady state for the next two climbs, followed by a higher-efficiency period where my power:heartrate ratio was measurably lower for about six climbs. Then I dropped back to steady-state efficiency for the next five climbs, while my last climb showed another measurable drop-off in this ratio as I started to tire more. By the way, my crank and bottom bracket functioned just fine, it seemed like there was less creaking noise coming from the bottom bracket, so perhaps the lubrication had some beneficial effect.

Avg speed = 14.4 mph (14.4 mph). Total mileage = 55.3 mph
Avg power = 152 W. Weighted avg power = 194 W
Total elevation gain = 7040' (!) (7070')
Avg heartrate = 128 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 145 (143)
Training Load = 306
Intensity = 88%

Drove home after loading up my gear and got there a little after 10:00. Haleakala is definitely going to be a challenge for me. I had the house to myself for a bit until the others returned from a walk down to the park and back. We ended up going to lunch at a new place in RB, Bushfire Kitchen. It was okay, prices were high (of course) for what they served, food was decent but not great. Stopped at Von's after lunch and then headed home. The rest of the afternoon was quiet. I had a little nap and watched some TV, nothing useful done. Evening was also quiet, read a fair amount. I started re-reading The Scorch Trials, by James Dashner after finishing The Making of the Atomic Bomb.

06-01-2026 Basketball

Slept okay, this was intended to be an easy exercise day, given plans for the following day's ride. Had some cereal for breakfast. Around 9:00 I went to the WWC and shot baskets for about a half hour. At one point, I made six straight 3's, which is about as unusual as it gets for me and basketball. Rode home, where Ann was getting ready to drive to San Clemente and SJC with Kathy and Heather. While they were gone I watched a little TV, organized my workbench in the garage, put the aero bars back on my Fuji, and made some adjustments to the sprinklers for the upper bed in the front yard, swapping out some sprayer heads in an attempt to reduce the overall water flow and get better coverage. This line still uses a lot of water, so I limited its minutes. They got home in time for us to have dinner together, and the evening was a quiet one.

05-31-2026 Run/Swim

Slept pretty well, even with the coffee, I think because I didn't get a lot of sleep the night before. I woke up around 5:30, read for a while, then got ready for a run. Went down by the park and did my usual 5k route, walking the rest of the way up the hill to get back home. I stretched before the run and kept my pace steady but not too fast.

Avg pace = 8:19/mi
Total distance = 3.18 mi
Elapsed moving time = 26:29
Avg heartrate = 123 bpm
Relative Effort = 6

Got home, did a little work on the computer, then I got ready for a swim at the WWC. It was really busy at the opening, but the pool wasn't too busy to begin with. It got more crowded soon after I started, but I had my preferred lane. I swam the first 1000 yds, took a little pause, then swam another 200, another break, followed by a 300 to get to a total of 1500, with the following split times: 9:23, 9:39, 9:25. I didn't select the right workout type on my watch, so this one wasn't recorded, other than on video.

Avg pace = 1:54/100 yds (Video, not counting pause)
Total distance = 1500 yds
Elapsed moving time = 28:27 (Video)

Had some cereal when I got home, then I chilled for a while. Ann, Kathy, and Heather drove down to Coronado, walked around in the afternoon and watched a concert with a Fleetwood Mac cover band at Spreckels Park before heading home in the evening. I stayed home and decided to try and remove my crankset to lubricate the bearings. This turned out to be an adventure. First I removed the Dub cap on the drive side crank using the tool I had bought when I got the cap in the first place (it didn't come with the bike). Then I loosened the 2 mm Allen bolt on the pre-tension wheel on the non-drive side. Next I used an 8 mm Allen wrench to loosen the bolt holding the crank on. Lots of videos said this bolt could be very difficult to loosen, but I didn't have any problems. When I removed it, I couldn't get the crank off. I went back to look at other videos, looked up the serial number for my bike to get the exact model of the crank, still no luck. I went into the garage and out a number of times, resolved to take it into Poway Bikes and have them show me how to remove it. At this point I found another video that mentioned extracting the crank, and I thought about the olden days, when you needed a crank extractor tool to do this job. This other video mentioned the need to have the Dub cap on while loosening the bolt, since this cap then effectively serves as the crank extractor. So I put the crank back on, tightened the bolt somewhat, then put the cap back on. Then, when I loosened the 8 mm bolt again the crank came off. Success! I had figured it out myself, with lots of help from videos. Got the crank off, then a couple of taps with a rubber mallet loosened the other side and allowed me to remove it too. As far as I can tell, I found that the bearings are sealed and can't be opened up. So I applied grease to the areas where the bearings were rotating, in the hope that some of this grease might make it into the bearings. Then I reinstalled the non-drive side arm (it took a couple of times before I could get it to seat), and reattached the spider assembly on the drive side, using a torque wrench to tighten it to specifications. I put the Dub cap back on and manually tightened the pre-tension wheel finger-tight, then backed off a tiny big before tightening the little locking bolt with the 2 mm Allen wrench. Had taken the pedals and chain off for easier access, so I reinstalled them as well, lubricating the pedals before putting them back on. Everything seems to be put back together, may need a shake-out ride to verify proper operation. The rest of the day and evening were fairly quiet, I had leftovers for dinner, nothing major to note (<>).

05/30/2026 Ride

This was an annoying, and short, night. We got home from the theatre after 11:00, and I didn't take too long to get to sleep, even though I dozed a little bit during the show. About 1:30 I woke to the sounds of the smoke detectors beeping. As usual, I couldn't easily localize which ones were beeping, so I ended up having to disconnect both wired smoke detectors and put them in the garage to get them to stop annoying me. Took a while to get back to sleep after these antics. My alarm woke me at 5:15, and I had time to get ready for a bike ride, meeting James and Rob T along the way. Left the house before 6:00 and rode through the neighborhood to RB Rd, then took CdS to San Dieguito Rd, which took me less than thirty minutes. There I waited a couple of minutes for James, who was early to this meet-up spot as well. We rode down the hill to wait for Rob at the corner of El Apajo. He was a little late to this spot but eventually showed up. Then the three of us rode loosely together over to Rancho Diegueno Rd, turning left here an riding up this short, steep climb. James was riding his Tomassini, which isn't geared for this type of gradient, but he made it up okay. Over to Ranch Santa Fe Farms Rd, turning right and taking it to CVR, where Rob and I waited for James to catch up. Then it was over to the 56 bike path. Rob missed the turn to get to the bike path, and I had to ride back to the branch-off and call him to get him back on track. James got way out ahead of us, so the two of us rode down the path to ECR, where James was waiting. We rode together over to CVR and took it to PCH, heading north and avoiding the TP climb that had been discussed. Down the coast for a while, initially having to chase James down, then Rob and I kicked in the jets and got ahead of him. We gathered back before La Costa Ave, turning right here. Across the flats back to ECR, where we split from Rob and turned right. The two of us rode to the outlet mall nearby and found a café to stop for coffee. Service took forever, not sure why, but we had a good conversation, and it was pleasant. We continued on ECR to Olivenhain Rd, turning left and riding up to RSF Rd, where we turned right. I had dialed my pace back to more closely match James, and we rode basically together onto El Camino del Norte. I got ahead of him on this gradual climb, even though I was taking it easy. Right turn onto Via de Fortuna, following it to El Montevideo, where we turned left and rode over to Paseo Delicias. Right turn here, down towards RSF village and a left turn on VdlV. Then it was back to El Apajo and up Three Witches to the CdS intersection. James turned right her to head home, and I turned left. Back the new normal way via W Bernardo Dr from here. Legs felt just fine at the end, I had an easier time of it on this ride than a normal Saturday workout.

Avg speed = 15.4 mph (15.6 mph). Total mileage = 53.8 mi
Avg power = 122 W. Weighted avg power = 154 W
Total elevation gain = 2980' (3030')
Avg heartrate = 116 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 63 (66)
Training Load = 199
Intensity = 70%

Got home earlier than usual, had time to shower and relax a little bit before driving down to the airport with Ann to pick up Kathy and Heather. We didn't have to wait too long in the cell phone parking lot before they were walking to the arrivals area. Drive home was uneventful, we had some lunch when we got back, talked a lot throughout the afternoon and evening. I chatted with Heather about her job and the impact of AI tools on her coding responsibilities. I watched a little TV after they went upstairs, then I went to bed as well.

05-29-2026 Swim

Slept okay, woke up around 5:00 and lay in bed, read for a while as well. I got up and did a little more updating of my riding blog entries with my own cycling analysis data. Then I got ready for a swim and headed over to the WWC to meet Avi. We did some intervals and chatted in between sets, was pleasant as usual.

Avg heartrate = 169 bpm (nope)
Relative Effort = 101 (again, nope)
SWOLF = 41 (included rest period when I forgot to pause the workout)
Avg stroke rate = 19 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.53 yds

Got home, avoided riding while it was sprinkling, and had some cereal for breakfast. Later in the morning and early afternoon I went out and investigated the sprinkler line for the upper beds in the front and back yards. Didn't find any obvious leaks, but this line uses a lot of water. I increased the flow to the peach tree and decreased the sprinkler time overall. Also chopped a couple of low shoots off the tree in the front yard, which were blocking the sprinkler flow. I replaced one of the sprinkler nozzles with a lower-flow version, not sure if it made a huge difference. Cleared out the areas around the sprinkler heads in the back yard and pulled out some of the overgrowth, including cutting down the pepper tree shoots. Working in that back upper bed is definitely no fun. Caleb came over a little after 3:30, and we drove down to Emily's office to pick her up from work. Had dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant off Mira Mesa Blvd, food was decent, then we ate ice cream at a shop next door. Drove downtown to the Civic Theatre, no traffic to speak of, and parked in the lot right by the theatre, Google Maps directions to the entrance to the parking lot weren't great, but we eventually found it. We saw The Sound of Music on stage. It was cute but dated, lots of familiar songs. I was tired, so I dozed at times through some of the dialogue. Before the show we were standing in the lobby talking about funny family songs, and a lady from one of the bars joined in our conversation, it was kinda strange but okay. Emily kept coming back to the meme of the night: Mervyn's, The Musical. That was probably the best part of the evening for me. Drove home and got back a little after 11:00 after dropping Emily and Caleb off at the parking lot by her office.
