08-31-2026 Ride

Pretty restless night trying to sleep, I'm guessing I had too much caffeine in addition to the nap. I ended up waking up a little after 6:00 and getting ready, slowly, for a bike ride to try out my new wheels. Through the neighborhood via the long way to get to W Bernardo Dr, turning right there and heading up the hill and past the HP site. Over to Bernardo Center Dr, turning right and riding down the hill to test how the wheels felt (they were good). Right on Cayenne Ridge Rd, taking it over to Dove Creek Rd, which I used to get to 4S Ranch Pkwy, turning right and heading up to CSB. Left turn there, taking it up to Nicole Ridge Rd, where I turned left. I rode around that neighborhood and then got back to Nicole Ridge Rd, taking it to Potomac Ridge Rd and using that road to get to PdS. Left turn there, taking this road down to San Dieguito Rd and turning there. Down the hill and over El Apajo and Via de Santa Fe to Calzada del Bosque. I used that road to get over to VdlV, turning left there and riding, not too fast, to ECR. I turned left there and rode partway up the hill to the turn onto Derby Downs Rd, climbing up to Old El Camino Real. I initially turned left but then turned around to see where this road led heading south. It dead-ended into a street with no exit out of the neighborhood, so I rode back up and then down Old El Camino Real to return to San Dieguito Rd. Across the flats and then slowly up the Three Witches climb, just no energy on this day. I got back to CdS and plodded home the new normal way until turning off RB Rd into the neighborhood and riding that way back to the house.

Avg speed = 14.8 mph (14.9 mph). Total mileage = 33.0 mi
Avg power = 131 W. Weighted avg power = 164 W
Total elevation gain = 2000' (2030')
Avg heartrate = 112 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 34 (35)
Training Load = 134 (133)

After the ride I had some breakfast, cleaned up the kitchen dishes, then watched a little TV. Next, it was time to do some tasks. I went out in the garage, took my new wheels off and measured the new rotor thickness to be about 1.80 mm. Because I had the issue with my rotor lock ring I took the ones that came with the wheels off and replaced them with the ones that came with my bike. I also measured the old bike rotor thickness values for front and rear wheels, they were 1.30 and 0.93 mm, respectively on average. I was surprised at how much wear they showed, probably won't put them back on the bike. My brake responsiveness is measurably better with the new rotors, just a little grabbing on the front rotor that hasn't resolved yet. A little after noon I talked to Blair, hadn't chatted with him since April. He's doing okay, seems resigned to not working, although I didn't bring the subject of job-hunting up.  After we ended our call Ross texted me, so I called him back and gave him some pointers about how to set up the old Canon Pixma printer on his Windows laptop. Initial efforts didn't work, but I sent him a video that showed how to download drivers and get it working, and apparently that did the trick. I watched a little TV in the afternoon, and read as well. Later on I went in to try and do some cycling analysis code upgrades but got sidetracked updating my cycling database program so it would work with recent changes I'd made to the general code. That took longer than expected. After dinner Ann and I watched some TV, then I read for a while. I also put the SPD MTB cleats on a pair of cycling shoes and installed my MTB pedals on my Fuji to test them out on the coffee ride in the morning with Nel and Andy.

08-30-2026 Run

Had trouble sleeping. The cat got really agitated around 1:00 in the morning, turns out that she hadn't been fed earlier, and she was hungry. Ann had the A/C on full-blast, and it was too much for me in our room, so I eventually went into the other room to sleep, after reading for a bit. Woke up a little after 6:00 and got ready for a longer run at a slower pace. Down to the park and looping around, then running back to get five miles in. I had negative splits throughout, along with a pretty decent last mile. Stretched a little bit before the run and didn't feel any discomfort.

Avg pace = 8:28/mi
Total distance = 5.12 mi
Elapsed moving time = 43:22
Avg heartrate = 130 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 19

Got home, made some coffee, and chatted with Joe, then Laura, before they packed up their stuff and started back to Berkeley. I did some stuff around the house (Ann had gone to church), including cleaning up some of my emails. Then I went out in the garage and unboxed my new EliteWheels ENT 3.0 carbon wheels. Here are some of the details.

    Front wheel    R260607269 02010474   D110G1-J2F06734-213 02010474-29R38C31Z

    Rear wheel    R260608377 02010475   D110G1-J2F07454-242 02010475-29R38C31Z

I measured the inner and outer widths of the rims, and they are approximately 23 and 31 mm, respectively. I first attached the disc brake rotors I had purchased earlier (I attached them finger-tight, since I don't have the right spline tool to tighten the rotor lock rings.  The wheels came with a small roll of rim tape, so I carefully applied the tape around the interior surface of the rims to cover the holes for the spokes. Found a couple of old inner tubes with shorter valve stems that I could use, since these wheels are 38 mm depth. I was also lucky enough to find two 25 mm matching Gatorskin tires, purchased at different times and likely having different riding history. Put the tube and tire on the front wheel, it was more difficult with this rim to seat the tire bead, then I pumped the tire up. I tried to put it on the bike and ended up having to remove the brake pads, push the pistons back in, loosen the screws holding the brake to the frame, and reinstall the brake pads before I put the wheel on. I had to adjust the position of the brake to minimize rubbing against the rotor, then I tightened everything up and started on the rear wheel. I don't have a spare cassette, so I ended up taking the cassette off my DT Swiss wheel and installing it on the new wheel so I can try them out. Will have to decide if I'm going to buy another cassette to keep on this wheelset, since it will likely be $100-150. Then, using the same process, I put the disc brake rotor on and applied the rim tape to the interior of the wheel. Installed a tube and tire, then followed the same process to align the brake with the rotor. All looks good after both wheels were installed. I'll give it a test ride tomorrow. After that exercise I had some lunch, then in the afternoon took an short nap and read for a while. The rest of the afternoon was pretty quiet. After dinner and cleaning up the dishes Ann and I watched some TV before settling down for the night (<>).

While I had the wheels out, I also took pictures of the barcodes on my DT Swiss wheels. They have inner and outer rim widths of about 20 and 27 mm, respectively.

08-29-2026 Ride/Walk

Got up early for a short bike ride before we went out for the day. I rode a little faster than I have been riding, legs felt a little sluggish from the regular exertion on previous days. This was a pretty standard route for the most part, through the neighborhood and out RB Rd to CdS. I took this out past the 56 and then turned on CMR and climbed to Black Mountain Rd. Left turn there, riding to CVR. I wasn't riding very hard at this point, but a guy on a beautiful Colnago bike passed me, and so I sped up to try and catch him on the subsequent climb. I was able to catch and pass him after we turned on CVR, but he eventually passed me again on the descent, and I wasn't interested in trying to catch him again. Down to Dove Canyon Rd taking it back to RB Rd and home the normal way from there.

Avg speed = 16.3 mph (16.4 mph). Total mileage = 20.9 mi
Avg power = 141 W. Weighted avg power = 181 W
Total elevation gain = 1400' (1390')
Avg heartrate = 114 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 21 (22)
Training Load = 87 (88)
Intensity = 82% (81%)

Got home and had time to shave and shower before Ann drove the four of us down to the Zoo to meet Emily and Caleb. We met them by the lion at the front gate right around 9:00 when the park opened. Caleb got the passed for us, and we headed directly to the panda exhibit, getting in line for the 9:30 opening. Only the male was out, it was underwhelming. Then we walked through other parts of the zoo, including the Australia and Africa regions. We waited in line for about 30 minutes to take the bus around the park, that was also disappointing, since we mostly saw the animal enclosures but not the animals. Caleb's employee discount allowed us to get refillable souvenir cups, they we expensive but useful on this warm (almost hot) day. We saw most of the highlights, including some interesting close-up views of adult male and female lions. Did a fair amount of walking, and everybody was hot and a little irritable by the end. We drove back and stopped at Best Pizza & Brew in CMR for lunch. Ann didn't order enough pizza, IMHO, but it was okay. Emily, Caleb, and I sat at one table and had a nice chat. Then they drove to their place, and we drove home. A little later, the four of us drove to Stone Brewery, which is likely closing this year. We had to wait about 25 minutes for a table (there weren't enough servers), and the service was initially lackluster. Had drinks and snacks, it was fine but started to get hot near the end, even though we were in the shade. Got home, and I scrounged around for some food to eat for dinner, there wasn't much in the house. Laura, Joe, and I watched Best in Show. I'd seen it at least once before, but it held up pretty well. Joe had never seen it, and he also thought it was funny. I was ready for sleep after that.

08-28-2026 Run/Ride

Went to sleep kinda early, woke up a little before 4:00. I dozed in bed before getting up (<>) and getting ready for a run. I drove over to Grape Day Park in Escondido, parked on a side street, and did a quick stretch before running what I think will be the route for the Grape Day 5k. Took Broadway to Grand Ave and turned right, running on the sidewalks down to Centre City Pkwy before turning around and heading back. Then it was up on Broadway to 7th Ave. It's fairly flat until 6th Ave, then it tilts up and actually gets steep before the left turn onto 7th Ave. I was still climbing after the turn but at a lesser grade until it tilted up again on my way to Grape St, where I turned left again. There is a little crest on this street, it drops down a bit before the right turn onto 5th Ave, where I had to climb again up to the top, at Fig St. I continued a little bit before finding a place to turn around and head back down 5th Ave to Broadway. This is steadily downhill all the way back to Broadway, and my pace picked up as a result. I turned right on Broadway and ran to Grand Ave, turning right again and running on the sidewalks up to Juniper St, where I turned around and headed back again to Broadway. Last right turn there, running back to the intersection where I started. I'm sure I got a little benefit from the run pausing at several intersections with red lights. If I want a shot at placing in the 5k, I'll need to start faster, not slow down as much in the second mile, and go all out at the end.

Avg pace = 7:21/mi
Total distance = 3.17 mi
Elapsed moving time = 23:19
Avg heartrate = 147 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 27

Got home and got ready for a bike ride on (now more) tired legs. Wanted to get the ride in before it heated up, and I was successful here. I rode down by the park and over to Highland Valley Rd, turning there, riding on the flats and up the first part of the climb before turning around and heading back to Pomerado Rd. I was okay pushing the pace on the flats but didn't have much else in my legs when the grade turned up. I turned left at Pomerado Rd and rode up to Stone Canyon Rd, turning right there on a whim and then left on Avenida Lamego. This is an initially steep little climb that took me to Avenida Villaha, which changed to Calle Pueblito after I crossed Bernardo Heights Pkwy. There was a traffic jam on this street as parents dropped their kids off at the middle school. I rode up to Paseo Lucido, turned right, then took a left on Corte Sabio to bypass some of the school traffic. I took Avenida Alcachofa over to Calle Saucillo and used it to get back to Paseo Lucido, where I headed over to CMR. Talked to another cyclist while we were waiting for the light changes at CdN and, after turning onto Rancho Carmel Dr, at CMR. He was heading to C's Ice Cream & Deli in Scripps Ranch, I'm guessing he owns or manages it. I pulled into the parking lot and got a couple of donuts from Sesame Donuts, then I sat and ate them while relaxing. After the break I rode back to Rancho Carmel Dr and then took CMR back to CdN, turning left there and following the new time trial route back home. Was slower on the ride than I'd hoped I would be and certainly more tired when I got home.

Avg speed = 15.7 mph (15.8 mph). Total mileage = 20.7 mi
Avg power = 130 W. Weighted avg power = 151 W
Total elevation gain = 1240' (1240')
Avg heartrate = 122 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 27 (27)
Training Load = 70 (79)
Intensity = 69% (76%)

Got home, and I was glad to sit down and chill for a bit while chatting with Laura and Ann. Laura was talking about sewing her wedding dress, along with its intended design, with Ann, I had nothing to contribute. So I took a shower and felt much better. Made some iced tea later, then I watched some TV about reviving an 80s Ferrari engine that was pretty interesting. Had a little nap later in the morning while I was reading, then I had a big lunch. We three chatted in the afternoon, and I read for a bit as well. Continued cleaning up my Google Photos storage as well. Later in the afternoon we drove down to the airport through moderate traffic to pick Joe up from the airport. We didn't have to wait too long. Then we drove to Old Town and had dinner at El Sueno, a decent restaurant that was only a little overpriced. Home after that, where the four of us talked until it was time to settle down for the night.

08-27-2026 Ride/Swim

Slept pretty well, although it was muggy in the night and harder to stay cool. I woke up a little before 5:30 and got ready for an early-morning bike ride, leaving as soon as it was light enough, a little before 6:00. Even then, it was kinda sketchy riding on W Bernardo Dr. I rode over to the pedestrian bridge and across the lake, then over to Via Rancho Pkwy, turning left and heading up to Felicita Rd, where I turned. Up that little climb and then left on Hamilton Ln, taking it to Bernardo Ave. I turned right there and rode up and over to the gate, past it, then up to 11th Ave. Not a lot of energy in my legs on this day, I think I need to include more multiple days of riding to get ready for the November trip. I rode over to Del Dios Rd and used it to get to Avenida del Diablo. Then it was over to Citracado Pkwy, turning right there and staying on it up to the hospital. When I got near the top of the climb Paula was waiting, she had ridden from her house via Twin Oaks Valley Pkwy. We kept on Citracado Pkwy until turning left onto Auto Park Way. Stayed on Nordahl Rd, up that little climb past the 78, then we turned left on Knob Hill Rd. Over to Bennett Ave, where we turned right and took it to El Norte Pkwy. This is a nice wide road with good bike lanes. Left on El Norte Pkwy, then a right on Country Club Ln. We took this road for a bit, then turned right on La Brea St, which turned into Cortez Ave and then into Sunset Heights Rd. This took us to Nutmeg St, where we turned left and rode back to Country Club Ln. Right turn there, under the freeway, then we turned right on Village Rd to get over to Broadway. This road wasn't a great choice for early morning traffic, but we made it into downtown Escondido with no issues, turning right on Valley Pkwy to get over to Quince St. Left turn here, taking it to the end and turning right on 13th Ave to get to Redwood St. This got us to Felicita Rd, and we rode over to Hamilton Ln, turning right there and taking the new route I'd found, up this road, then a right on Continental Ln followed by a left on Calle Catalina that got us to the top of Gamble Ln. We then used Scenic Trail Way to get back to Citracado Pkwy. Paula let me know around here that she was going to ride back through San Elijo Hills, so we rode down to Harmony Grove Village Pkwy, turned there and took it to Harmony Grove Rd. We split up there, and I headed north on this road to get back to Citracado Pkwy. Left turn there and then a right on Andreasen Dr, heading through the Escondido industrial park via a right turn on Harmony Grove Rd (it no longer connects directly). Over to Hale Ave, turning left there and then right onto 9th Ave. At this point I wasn't sure which way to take home, but I decided to try and stay away from traffic as much as possible. So I rode back to Del Dios Rd, turned right there and then left back onto 11th Ave. From here, I retraced my earlier route back to the freeway and took it over the lake, riding home the normal way from there. Again, no a high-energy day for me on the bike, just working to get miles in. The route ended up having more elevation gain in it than I had thought it would.

Avg speed = 14.1 mph (14.2 mph). Total mileage = 33.1 mi
Avg power = 110 W. Weighted avg power = 149 W
Total elevation gain = 2010' (1960')
Avg heartrate = 110 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 32 (33)
Training Load = 118 (115)
Intensity = 68% (68%)

Got home, I ended up not eating much (I'd eaten a banana during and just after the ride), just drank a large cup of coffee. I talked Ann into going to the WWC with me to swim, which was great. She had to eat breakfast, so it was over an hour before we actually drove over there. I ended up doing four 250s with longer breaks in between than usual. Ann did some laps as well, which was fantastic. I took my camera but apparently it got knocked around so it wasn't aimed at the pool. Here are the splits (from my watch data) for the four 250s: 4:35, 4:38, 4:38, 4:15. I tried to keep a long and strong stroke, last 250 was using the swim fins, but in the first three 250s my stroke count was 18-19.

Avg pace = 1:49/100 yds (Video)
Total distance = 1000 yds (Video)
Elapsed moving time = 18:06 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 122 bpm (too low)
Relative Effort = 8 (too low)
SWOLF = 35
Avg stroke rate = 20 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.54 yds

Got home, caught up some on blogging, then had some lunch (I was pretty hungry). Laura got back from visiting her movie producer friend Sonia around noon. We chatted for a little bit, then she went upstairs. I watched some TV, then went in the garage and did a brake bleed on my rear brakes, which were kinda shaky after I had replaced the brake pads (front and back) the previous evening. Bleed procedure went okay, maybe they are a little more grabby, but they aren't as grabby as the front brakes. We ate dinner together and chatted after dinner. The rest of the evening was quiet.

08-26-2026 Ride

Slept fitfully, apparently from the big cup of coffee the previous day. I woke up around 3:00, was awake for a while, and finally got back to sleep. Woke up again, finished my latest book, Gaudy Night, then got up to get ready for a ride with John. I took the normal way over there (including going to top of Briarleaf Way and then down to Dapple Ct) but not too fast. Jayden was out when I got there, he wanted us to race around the street before we left, so we three did. Over to Angelique St and then up to the top, where I circled back and rode down to John before riding back up. Right on Cypress Canyon Rd, taking it down to Blue Cypress Dr and turning left there. It's a steady climb up to Spring Canyon Rd, where we turned left and took the gradual climb back to Pomerado Rd. Down the hill, and it was a little sketchy in morning traffic. I rode the brakes (rear brake was squealing) for much of the way down. We continued on Pomerado Rd all the way back to RB Rd. As we were gradually climbing to Ted Williams Pkwy, a rider passed us, and I thought I recognized him as Craig Miller. He was moving, so I was torn between riding with John and trying to catch up to him. I ended up somewhere in the middle, and he caught some lights, which gave me a shot to close the gap. I caught him just past the hospital and chatted briefly with him before slowing down to wait for John to catch up. Then we continued down to RB Rd and got onto the old time trial route. He was pretty slow, I'm guessing he hasn't been riding that much. I stopped several times to wait for him. Eventually, he passed me on the downhill past the high school. He got pretty far in front. I eventually caught him on the climb up to Poway Rd, and I matched his pace to the top. We rode together all the way on Poway Rd back to Springhurst Dr. I stopped to pick up a penny around Oak Knoll Rd, then pushed to catch back up to him. Back to his house the normal way, I ended up doing the same little extra distance on Briarleaf Way as I had done earlier. Vivian made smoothies for us, and on this hot humid day they were particularly satisfying. I chatted with them for a while but not as long as usual, since the day was hot and getting hotter. Because I'd ridden on Pomerado Rd so much, I took the new time trial route back by turning left on Sabre Springs Pkwy. Back to the intersection with CdN, where I decided to go straight and stay on Paseo Lucido all the way down the hill before turning onto Bernardo Heights Pkwy. Home the normal way from there via Bernardo Center Dr. I have been slower in this weather, definitely. My average heartrate is also higher when riding in this kind of weather.

Avg speed = 14.9 mph (15.0 mph). Total mileage = 41.9 mi
Avg power = 128 W. Weighted avg power = 157 W
Total elevation gain = 2720' (2780')
Avg heartrate = 123 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 66 (68)
Training Load = 164 (167)
Intensity = 71% (75%)

Got home early enough for just a little relaxation time before I needed to get ready for my volunteer shift at the hospital. It was in the 90s when I rode over there, I had a pretty big lunch when I was there. The shift was slow at the beginning but got pretty busy about 2/3 of the way through. I heard that Johnny was recovering from neck surgery, and I met a travel nurse, Lauren, who was pretty nice. Courtney was the charge nurse, she's decent as well. After the shift I walked out to my scooter, and the temperature gauge said 103 deg. It felt really hot on the way home, not that hot but definitely in the upper 90s. Got home and had a little down time before dinner, where I watched a bit of TV. After dinner I replaced a small drip sprinkler head in the back yard and then replaced both sets of brake pads on my Canyon bike. Couldn't get the front pads to be completely free from the rotor, but I think it's close enough. Then, Ann and I watched an interesting documentary about the feud between chess grandmasters Hans Niemann and Magnus Carlsen. It was a compelling and weird story. The rest of the evening was quiet.

I've started a new book, Shadows of Eternity, by Gregory Benford, one of my favorite SF authors from a number of years ago.

08-25-2026 Ride

Slept pretty well, woke up around 5:00 and kinda dozed in bed until I got up at 6:00. I saw a message about the meeting spot for my ride with Andy and Nel and hustled to get ready and leave sooner than I had planned. Rode through the neighborhood all the way around Matinal Circle and then took W Bernardo Dr to RB Rd and then Bernardo Center Dr. Right turn there, taking it up to Bernardo Heights Pkwy and turning left. Another left on Paseo Lucido, where I climbed a little bit to its intersection with Avenida Venusto. This is where I thought I was supposed to meet Andy and Nel, so I sent them a photo and a message. Andy called shortly afterward. Apparently there was a miscommunication about where he and I were supposed to meet (he thought at his house). We cleared it up, and he started riding to our meeting point, which, from Nel's subsequent message, was at the other intersection of Paseo Lucido and Avenida Venusto, by the high school. So I took Paseo Lucido up and over past the high school and met Nel at that intersection, where we waited for Andy to show up. He did, not too long after, and we continued over to CMR, taking it to Rancho Carmel Dr and turning right there. Down the hill and over to the 56 bike path entrance, where we turned and got on the bike path, staying on it all the way to its end. In the morning, this bike path has a number of dangerous intersections, where car drivers are not always watching for cyclists. But we navigated all of them safely and got down to Sorrento Valley, where we turned left on that bike path and back to CMR, turning left and stopping for coffee at the Corner House Cafe. It took a bit of time to get our coffee, then we chatted for a while as the temperature creeped up. It was already more humid than usual, so the ride back home was going to be tougher. After coffee, we retraced our route back to the 56 bike path and took it to CdS, turning right there and then right again onto Torrey Santa Fe Rd. Over to Torrey Meadows Dr, turning there and using it to get back to CdS. We rode over to the Von's shopping center and stopped there for a quick bio break before heading back to CdS yet again and turning left. To CVR, right turn there and up the gradual climb. I put in a little bit of an effort here, suffering some from the heat and humidity. Nel kept on my wheel all the way to the summit, where we stopped and waited for Andy to catch up. Then it was down the hill and back up to Bernardo Center Dr. We stayed on it into RB. Nel turned off at Bernardo Heights Pkwy to head home, Andy turned at Lomica Dr, and I took the normal way home from there via Bernardo Center Dr. It was, I think, 97 deg when I got home. A little bit of a breeze, but no wonder I felt a little bit drained at the end of an easy-paced ride.

Avg speed = 13.9 mph (14.0 mph). Total mileage = 36.7 mi
Avg power = 104 W. Weighted avg power = 133 W
Total elevation gain = 2270' (2220')
Avg heartrate = 108 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 33 (33)
Training Load = 116 (112)
Intensity = 60% (64%)

Got home, Laura was on her way from the conference, so I had a shave and a shower before she got there. We chatted for a while before heading to lunch at Charm Thai Cafe. Lunch there was decent, and we drove back after that, chatted some more then. I went upstairs later to read for a bit, and Ann and Laura went down to UTC for Laura to return something. Watched some TV in the afternoon. We three had dinner together and talked for a while after dinner, then retired for the rest of the evening.

08-24-2026 Run/Swim

Had kind of a restless night, waking up in the middle of it and reading for a while before I tried to get back to sleep. Eventually I did, getting up a little after 6:00 and getting ready for a run. I ran a faster pace than usual after I saw what kind of time I likely would need in order to be competitive in my age bracket at the Grape Day 5k. Down by the park and running my normal 5k route. I had negative splits for the first three miles, felt okay. And I did stretch before the run, which helps.

Avg pace = 7:27/mi
Total distance = 3.15 mi
Elapsed moving time = 23:30
Avg heartrate = 143 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 23

I got back, had a little time to relax before getting ready for a swim at the WWC. I rode over there, temperature was really nice. Saw Ken, who I hadn't seen in a long time. I got lane 4, which I'm pretty sure is not as fast for me as lane 3. Intent here was to focus on stroke length and quality and go for more distance on this workout. I was really slow, unexpectedly so. Here are the splits for the four 500s, the last one I swam with a pull buoy: 9:49, 10:18, 10:10, 9:14. I was successful in having a longer stroke, just much slower using it.

Avg pace = 1:59/100 yds (Video)
Total distance = 2000 yds (Video)
Elapsed moving time = 39:31 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 159 bpm (nope)
Relative Effort = 86 (again, nope)
SWOLF = 38
Avg stroke rate = 19 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.44 yds

Got home, had some cereal for breakfast, and then I got cleaned up and ready for my annual physical with Timothy Strouse. Rode over there and found out that they didn't have my appointment in the system, not sure what happened. So I booked an appointment for tomorrow afternoon, no real issues there. Got home and watched some TV while eating a light lunch. The rest of the afternoon was quiet. Took the fan out of our room down to the garage, pulled the screens off and gave the interior and exterior a thorough cleaning. The fan worked much better after I reassembled it. I put gas back in the lawn mower, cut the grass, then took the gas back out. Had dinner and then a quiet evening as well. I got another AliExpress package, with my MTB pedals as well as tire liner tape to help reduce the risk of flats.

08-23-2026 Ride

Slept pretty well, woke up around 5:00, got up after 6:30 (<!>). Got ready for a bike ride, thinking I would be able to go a longer distance than I actually did. Headed through the neighborhood and up Florindo Rd for a change.  To RB Rd, and then a left on Via del Campo. Took a right on Via Esprillo, riding through the technology park to Via Frontera, which I used to get to W Bernardo Dr. Over to Bernardo Center Dr, turning right there and going past CdN to turn left on Avenida Abeja. Another left turn soon after onto Avenida de Los Lobos, which had a nice descent to Paseo Mantanoso. This is a sharp little climb, and I missed the turn I wanted to make at the top, descending further to CdN before I turned around and climbed back up to turn onto Corte Raposo. This road has an access road to the next neighborhood south and Andorra Way. Shortly after exising this access road I turned right onto Almazon St, which is pretty wavy on its way over to Penasquitos Rd. I used this road to get to CMR, taking it up and over the bump to ride down to Rancho Penasquitos Blvd, which I used to get to the 56 bike path. I was riding slowly on this day, it was clear and warm at this point. I ended up taking the bike path down to the access path to Rancho Santa Fe Farms Rd, where I exited and then turned left. Dropped down into a neighborhood, on Solterra Vista Pkwy, that I had ridden in with Avi awhile back. This time I stayed on this road as it went under Hwy 56 and then connected with CVR, a nice connecting road find. I turned right and slowly climbed up to Black Mountain Rd, then descended. I turned right on Wineridge Rd to see where it went, but it ended in a cul-de-sac soon after, so I rode back down, turned and did the same thing on Winecreek Dr. This road goes further uphill and then has a connector, DeBevoise Park Dr, that goes steeply up to a small neighborhood of close-packed homes. I rode up there to the end of the neighborhood before turning around and riding back down. The descent on Winecreek Dr was really nice, big winding curves and not too steep. Back to CVR and over to Dove Canyon Rd, taking it up the little climb and then turning left on Cimarron Canyon Dr to get over to 4S Ranch Pkwy. A right turn there, then a left on Lone Quail Rd to ride over to RB Rd. From there it was mostly the normal way home via W Bernardo Dr, which I stayed on until turning onto Aguamiel Rd and climbing up the last little bit. This ride wasn't much, but I was tired at the end.

Avg speed = 13.8 mph (13.8 mph). Total mileage = 27.2 mi
Avg power = 122 W. Weighted avg power = 161 W
Total elevation gain = 2300' (2260')
Avg heartrate = 112 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 30 (30)
Training Load = 108 (111)
Intensity = 73% (74%)

Got home, Ann was at church, so I watched some TV and ate a fairly big breakfast while watching TV. Nothing else done the rest of the morning, I had lunch and then cleaned the upstairs bathroom for when Laura and Joe come for a visit this week. It was also a quiet afternoon and evening, nothing noteworthy that I can recall.

08-22-2026 Ride

Slept a little fitfully, got up in the night and read for a little bit but got back to sleep. Woke up and got up, had some cereal for breakfast and did a morning clean of the kitchen before getting ready for the bike ride. I had put on a patched tube the night before and went to make sure the patch was holding (it was). Ended up leaving a little early from home, through the neighborhood and then taking the extended route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood. When I got there, Ray was already there, and not too long after James wheeled in. We didn't expect anybody else to join, so we left a little before 7:30. Headed on Templeton St over to PdS and took that road to Kristen Glen, where we turned left and rode down into the neighborhood until turning right on Paseo Montenero. Took that to Haaland Glen and turned there to get back to PdS. This took us to CdS, where we turned left and rode up the CdS Bump and past San Dieguito Rd, turning right into the Del Sur neighborhood just beyond that intersection. Right on Via Azul, another right on Via Inez, and a left on Via Fiesta. James was out in front and, at the left turn onto Camino de la Rosa he almost got creamed by a car coming. But he cut the turn and missed the car. Right on Lazanja Dr, which took us back to CdS. We stayed on it until the turn onto CVR. James knew where to turn, so Ray and I kept going over to Del Mar Heights Rd, where we turned right again. We waited here to make sure James made the turn, and Jed A. showed up right around the same time. He had gotten to Target right at 7:30, waited couple minutes to make sure nobody else showed up, then he motored after us, catching up after about 8 miles or so. Impressive! We rode to Old Carmel Valley Rd, turned left there and took it down to the 56 bike path. Turned there and rode to the end of the bike path. Initially, Ray and I were out front, but eventually he dropped back, and Jed was pushing the pace. I stayed with him, and the two of us got there first, waiting for the others to join. Then we rode over to CVR, turned right, and took it back to ECR, where we turned left and started up the gradual climb. Almost at the top, Jed caught a rear tire flat, so we stopped while he changed it (he is fast with tire changes!). Then we continued up the hill and started the descent into the flats but turned right on Derby Downs Rd to get to Old El Camino Real. This road is mainly downhill but has a short little kicker in the middle that can be surprising if you don't know how steep it is. Then we descended to SDR, turned left and then right to get back on ECR. Over to VdlV, turning left there and taking it toward the coast. For a change, we turned right on San Andres Dr, which is a climb of over 200', starting out shallow but getting steeper as you get closer to the top. I put in a pretty big effort here, Jed was with me until about 2/3 of the way up, when he couldn't hold my wheel. We waited for the others at the top, then descended to Las Banderas Dr, turning right there and using it to get over to Lomas Santa Fe. Under the freeway, then a right turn on Solana Hills Dr to get to the bike path on the west side of I-5. It was an easy ride over to Manchester Ave, where we turned left and took it to San Elijo Ave and then over to the 7-Eleven by Chesterfield Dr, where we had our planned stop. There were only four of us, so the stop was shorter than usual, and we continued by riding over to PCH and turning left. Through Cardiff and up the little climb into Solana Beach, nobody attacked on this little hill. We rode back to VdlV and turned left there to head back to ECR. Over to SDR from there and onto the flats, where James initially pulled us in his TT mode until we passed him and left him behind in a loose but effective pace line to the bottom of the Three Witches climb. Ray was out front and setting a modest pace. At some point after the first climb and into the second climb he slowed down a little, and I passed him. I wasn't going full gas, just putting pressure on him to keep up. We got onto the third climb, and about halfway up he tried to catch and pass me, but I had some more energy to burn, so I dropped him. We all gathered after the turn to get back on CdS. Rode together for a bit, then on the little climb up to the light at PdS I got out in front and kept pushing, nobody joined me. So I pushed a little harder all the way back to the starting point, then waited for the others to finish as well. We had pretty good luck with the sun. It stayed behind clouds until just before we started riding up Three Witches. And in the early part of the ride there was pretty heavy fog or marine layer. It was, however, much more humid than normal, so that made it more difficult to cool off. I didn't hang around too long after everybody got back, since it was heating up by this time. Rode home the new normal way via CSB and RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr. Legs were fine at the end, but I could feel the effects on not having ridden the previous week on my overall speed.

Avg speed = 16.5 mph (16.7 mph). Total mileage = 48.5 mi
Bisikleta route avg speed = 17.0 mph
Avg power = 143 W. Weighted avg power = 174 W
Total elevation gain = 2690' (2690')
Avg heartrate = 130 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 105 (112)
Training Load = 214 (212)
Intensity = 79% (80%)

Had a fairly light lunch after I got home and relaxed in the early afternoon, watching a little TV. Laura showed up around 3:00 after having driven down from Berkeley for a short conference downtown. She went with us to the Bisikleta summer beach party. Party was nice, less people than in years past, which isn't too surprising. I talked to Catalin about their Grand Teton trip, Leslie about her recent adventures (Machu Pichu and gall bladder surgery), and Eric about our general travels and his thoughts on retirement destinations. Food was okay, not a lot of vegetarian options available, but I made do. We took Laura to the Oceanside train station around 6:45, so she could catch a train downtown and get to her hotel. Drove home after that, and the rest of the evening was quiet.

08-21-2026 Swim

Slept pretty well after the travel day, woke up a little before 5:00 but was able to get back to sleep (<!>). When I got up I got ready, at a leisurely pace, for a swim at the WWC. This day was going to be a hot one, it was evident in the morning. Got over there and chatted with the early-morning regulars before Avi showed up and we went in. We got adjacent lanes, but had to squeeze in a bit because of others lane-splitting. It was fine. Swam a warmup 250, then we swam three 250s at more of a tempo pace before finishing up with a cooldown 250 with the pull buoy. Here are the splits: 4:36, 4:23, 4:24, 4:27, 4:38. Next time I'm going to have to try to keep this pace for 500 yds and see if I can do it.

Avg pace = 1:48/100 yds (Video)
Total distance = 1250 yds (Video)
Elapsed moving time = 22:38 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 128 bpm (seems low)
Relative Effort = 15
SWOLF = 36
Avg stroke rate = 22 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.37 yds

Got home, changed, and relaxed for a bit, including reading and taking a very little nap. Talked briefly to Ross about Mom's views regarding Joe and Laura's wedding (kinda hilarious) and whether to invite Linda down to Houston for the celebration. In the afternoon Ann and I ran some errands. We got gas, went to the new downtown library in Escondido (looks really nice), shopped at Aldi, and dropped off some computer stuff I was sending to Ross at the UPS dropoff in Staples. Later, I checked to see if my rear tire was flat (it was), so I patched the tube. Talked to Mark in the late afternoon and gave him an update on our Wednesday meeting with Mom. The rest of the evening was quiet. Ann and I watched some TV after dinner.

08-20-2026 Run

Travel day. I slept through the night but woke up early to try and get a run in before it warmed up too much. Was on the road around 6:45, but it was already over 80 deg and extremely humid. I ran through Lake Shadows and then through the adjoining neighborhood to get to Foley Rd by Steele Point Dr. I turned left and ran to a new road, Sundance Pr Dr, that took me over to a small neighborhood of new homes being built near the cove on Lake Houston. Most of the homes are under construction, I don't think any of them are occupied yet. After I ran around this neighborhood I retracted my path and then found a sidewalk that ran by an artificial lake. I got on it, and it ended up taking me into the original Sundance Cove neighborhood, by the new rec center. I had planned on a longer, slower run, and this made it happen. Eventually got back to Foley Rd, which I had to run along for a longer time than I wanted before turning on Steele Point Dr and heading back to the house. Didn't stretch before the run, and I didn't feel any twinge from my right knee during the run.

Avg pace = 8:56/mile (8:43 from Strava)
Total distance = 5.06
Elapsed moving time = 45:12
Avg heartrate = 166 bpm (Amazfit, nope)
Relative Effort = 119 (nope)

I was absolutely drenched in sweat when I got back, sat by the kitchen table for a bit to cool down, had potatoes for breakfast, and then took a shower. It was a quiet morning and early afternoon chatting with Mom and Ross, even taking a little nap. I left the house a little after 1:00, got gas, and stopped at Schlotzsky's to get a sandwich for the plane ride. Was a little worried about the length of the check-in process, but there was a guy at the counter (Jose) who made it go smoothly and ordered the shuttle to stop by. That took about 20-25 minutes, and it was a relatively quick trip to the airport and through security. So I was at the gate with plenty of time to spare before boarding started. We got on the plane, and it was maybe 5 minutes before the pilot came on and told us we needed to get off the plane so they could change a tire in the landing gear. Frustrating. It was slow getting everybody off, and we ended up waiting about 30 minutes by the gate before they boarded the plane again. Surprisingly, the re-boarding took less time than the first time. Once we got on the plane, they closed the door, taxied out to the runway, and took off, no need to wait in a long line of takeoffs. The flight was fairly smooth, only a little turbulence but nothing major. I ended up being about an hour late from the originally scheduled arrival time. Waited until it was my turn to get off the plane, then I walked through the terminal and over to near the cell phone parking lot, where Ann was waiting. They don't make it easy to walk this way, perhaps because there is still some construction around one of the sidewalks. But I got there. We drove over to Convoy St and had dinner at Tofu House. I wasn't really hungry but ended up eating all of the dish I got. Then it was home, and not too long after I laid down I was nodding off to sleep after another long day.

08-19-2026 Walk

Slept through the night but didn't get a lot of sleep, since I. Went to bed late and got up early for a walk through the neighborhoods by the lake house. Walked mostly around Lake Shadows but did walk around Mety Cove Dr as well before heading back. When I got back, Ross had unboxed his new HP laptop and was starting to set it up. I ate some cereal and and later helped him get going there. He found out that his phone's WiFi hotspot wasn't working, so we used my phone to get him connected to the web. It took a while to load the software updated, and we weren't fully successful in installing them, but we were able to get to the Windows home screen. Ben arrived around 10:15, and we sat down to have a depressing discussion with Mom about her future wishes. She reiterated her desire to die soon, and I got her to admit that was a prime reason for her wanting to moved into assisted living, where she feels she could do this more easily without upsetting Ross in particular. Key points:
  • She feels she is holding Ross back from what he wants to do (e.g. camping)
  • She wants a quick and painless death
  • She wasn't really hearing me when I talked about the suffering she will likely feel when she is actually dying
  • I told her about the impact of her not being around on the brothers as well as our families (she feels like she has done her part as the Grandma when the grandkids were younger)
  • Told a story about Dad talking to her about killing him and then herself.
  • I shared the important support role she plays in Ross's life, again I don't think she heard me
  • Ben was regularly strident and ornery, in my opinion, although he did pick up on Mom's feeling bad about Ross having to adjust his life to taking care of her
  • I tried to emphasize the expectations from her son's and their families of her being around for important family celebrations and gatherings
  • If she wants to shorten her life, we should explore options that might assist there
I had some cheese and leftover garlic bread for lunch, talked with Mom and Ross for a while. Then Mom went back to lay down, so Ross and I drove into Crosby to run errands. We stopped at the Boost Mobile store and found out why his Wi-Fi hotspot wasn't working, then we drove to the library to use their public Wi-Fi to download Microsoft Office, which I bought for him off of Stack Social. That took a while but was successful. He also installed DuckDuckGo as his default browser, I may want to give it a try as well. Then we drove to Aldi to get some things to make dinner, and it was back to the house after that. I had a little downtime then, talked to Mom and Ross for a bit. While I made dinner (baked chicken drumsticks and potatoes au gratin) I talked mostly to Ross. Finished dinner prep, Mom woke up from snoozing on the couch, and we ate dinner and talked for quite a while, with Ross popping in occasionally and joining in. I cleaned the dinner dishes while talking with Mom and was able to go lie down around 9:00, it had been a fairly long day.

08-18-2026 Run

Woke up about 6:30 and got ready for what I thought would be an early-morning run. Sun rises later here, so it was technically early in the morning. It was also about 80 deg and very humid. I ran a little bit through the Lake Shadows neighborhood before using Foley Rd to get to the next neighborhood to the east. Then I took Indian Mound Tr to get to the next neighborhood further and ran to its end before starting to head back on different roads. It was heating up, and I was really sweating without cooling down. Got back to the house, really drenched.

Avg pace = 8:01 min/mi
Total distance = 4.18 mi
Elapsed moving time = 33:32
Avg heartrate = 157 bpm (Amazfit, too high)
Relative Effort = 64 (unrealistic)

Had some cereal and tried to cool down, a shower later helped. Sarah, the hospice nurse, came at around 10:00 and examined Mom. She stayed for a bit after the exam and chatted with us, she is very nice. Then Mom and I drove over to Spring and met Ben, Adri, Susanne, and Abigail for lunch at Gringo's. Food was decent, place seems like it can work as the gathering spot for the Laura and Joe celebration in November. Not too many vegetarian options, though. Then we drove back to the house, Mom had a rest after that, and I relaxed as well. Later, I planned to go into Crosby to get some items for dinner, but I was able to find enough vegetables and supplies to be able to make stir-fry for dinner. Talked with Ross an fair amount while I was preparing dinner, he was in good form. Mom ended up sleeping through dinner (she did wake up later and eat some ice cream), so I had some of the stir-fry, and Ross had some later. Later in the evening he and I had a fairly productive conversation about his plans for taking time off and then going back to work. Plans seem solid, I'm still concerned about the execution part. Time will tell, and I will try to hold him to his pledges. Went to bed after that, it didn't take long to get to sleep.

08-17-2026 Walk

Travel day. I woke up in the night and read for a while before getting back to sleep. Got up a little after 5:00 and had some toast for breakfast. Emptied the dishwasher and dish rack, then checked my travel list to make sure I had everything packed. We left the house a little before 6:00, and Ann dropped me off at the airport right at 6:30. Through security and to the gate with no issues, the flight left a little early. I had a middle seat near the back of the airplane, wasn't terrible. Watched Crime 101, which was a decent airplane movie that occupied much of the flight time. I ate a sandwich I'd brought with me. We landed right around 1:00 Houston time. It took me about 40 minutes to get off the plane and over to the spot where I was to catch the shuttle to the rental car location. Only then did I realize I needed to request the shuttle by answering questions via WhatsApp. Successfully navigated, and then the shuttle thankfully arrived much earlier than expected. I got in, it was a short ride to the rental car office, and that's where the fun began. There was no live human interaction, I communicated with a remote agent by video over a terrible connection that kept dropping out. Very frustrating. They wantedots of insurance information that I didn't have, luckily an was able to send it to me over the phone. Eventually I don't think it mattered because I had to pay extra for a waiver associated with an "unsupported" auto insurance company. The entire process took over 30 minutes, way too long, then I had to take pics of the car to document any damage before driving it. Finally I was on the road and did t run into any heavy traffic, just normal stuff. I stopped at HEB on the way to pick up supplies for dinner and then got stuck behind a school bus on Foley Rd. So I didn't make it to the house until about 4:30. Ross pulled up at the same time, and he was in a manic mood, tough to negotiate without setting him off. Mom saw this, I guess, and she was pretty quiet when I made dinner. She ended up napping on the living room couch and then going back to her room without eating any dinner, which was mildly frustrating. Ross went out later, so after I ate dinner and cleaned the kitchen I went for a walk through the neighborhood. I went to unpack and get ready for sleep after that.

08-16-2026 Swim

Slept pretty well after going to bed early (<>). After I got up, I got ready for a swim at the WWC, headed over there and was ready at the gate when it opened. I put a buoy by lane 3 and then checked in for my flight to Houston. Warmed up with a 250 and then did some speed drills before finishing up with a 500 followed by a cool-down 250 with the pull buoy. My stroke was quite shortened after the speed work, thus the inclusion of the last 250 to try and lengthen it again.

Warmup 250
    4:42
5 100s at 2:00 intervals
    1:37
    1:40
    1:40
    1:41
    1:40
5 50s at 1:00 intervals
    0:47
    0:46
    0:48
    0:48
    0:48
500
    9:29
Cool-down 250 (with pull buoy)
    4:39

Somehow I didn't start my watch for the last 250, so Zepp only recorded the 1500 yd workout.

Avg pace = 1:47/100 yds (Video)
Total distance = 1750 yds (Video)
Elapsed moving time = 31:05 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 163 bpm (first 1500 yds, too high)
Relative Effort = 78 (first 1500 yds, nope)
SWOLF = 38 (first 1500 yds)
Avg stroke rate = 22 bpm (first 1500 yds)
Avg pull distance = 2.24 yds (first 1500 yds)

Got home, Ann was there, she didn't go to church. She'd made coffee cake, which was delicious. I had thought about going for a bike ride after the swim but decided not to. Updated my 2026 event log, this is a really tedious (but ultimately useful) process. Had some lunch and a little nap afterwards. Afternoon and evening were quiet. I packed for the trip and, after dinner, Ann and I watched some TV.

08-15-2026 Ride

Special Bisikleta ride celebrating six years as a group. I planned the route, taking the inaugural route, reversing it, and adding in some miles. I rode over the normal way to the parking lot by Marco's Pizza, day was overcast but more humid than usual. On this day there were the following riders: Perse, Jed, Andy (all three of them OGs), Arnold, Fritz, Nel, and Ray. We rode down by the park and over the pedestrian bridge, I was leading the others for the most part on this ride, up to a point. Took Sunset Dr to Via Rancho Pkwy and turned left, riding up the climb and then down to Del Dios Hwy. When I started out on the day, my right knee had some minor twinges from when I felt down running on Friday. I thought it might slow me down, but I nearly ended up with a PR on the climb past Felicita Rd up to the top of VRP, off my PR by one second and second fastest posted time ever for my age group. So, I pushed pretty hard there and gapped the others, particularly Andy. I waited at the top for him to show up, then he and I rode to where the other riders were, most of them waiting for us on Del Dios Hwy. We turned left and started down. On the initial little climb several others were out in front, and I paced with them until passing them and again pushing pretty hard all the way to the top before the descent. Eventually several of the riders caught and passed me before the descent started in earnest. I had a number of PRs on this stretch, including the fastest overall descent segment from the turn onto the highway until the turn onto the reverse Stud Loop. Arnold hung with me throughout this stretch, was riding strong early on. We waited at the turn until everybody showed up, then we took the reverse Stud Loop over to VdlV. I thought that the others would attack on this segment, so I pushed out ahead, ready to respond to them. But they never materialized, nobody was feeling particularly strong, I guess. We gathered again at the turn and then took VdlV down to Via de Santa Fe, turning on El Apajo and stopping for our break at the deli and bakery by San Dieguito Rd (SDR). It was still overcast, had a funny break before continuing. We got on SDR and rode the flats in a pace line that didn't seem particularly fast to me but ended up wearing Andy out. Over to ECR, using it to get back to VdlV and then heading to Calzada del Bosque. On this stretch, Fritz and I traded leads for the entire way, then we turned and got back to Via de Santa Fe. Rode these roads again to SDR, turning left this time. I was out front, again waiting for others to kick into a higher gear and power up Three Witches. It didn't happen. I put in a moderate effort, got to the turn onto CdS and waited for the others to show up. Andy was really slow on this climb, so we all waited for him to show up. On the way back to the starting point from here, I rode at Andy's pace while the others rode ahead. That lowered my overall average speed, but he needed the company. Back to RB Rd, turning there and taking it through 4S Ranch and over to Matinal Rd, where we turned left. A right turn on Capilla Rd took us by Gideon's house (where the inaugural ride started and ended) and down the hill. The route had us turning on  Oculto Rd, but Andy missed that turn. I ended up getting ahead of him, as he was waiting for me before turning around and starting to ride back up to Gideon's. I called him and got him back on track, and we rode together back to the starting point. Especially in the first 3/4 of this ride, I put in a consistently high effort before slowing down to ride with Andy. Legs felt good, my right knee didn't end up causing any issues.

Avg speed = 17.0 mph (17.1 mph). Total mileage = 37.9 mi
Avg power = 146 W. Weighted avg power = 179 W
Total elevation gain = 2120' (2180')
Avg heartrate = 125 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 64 (75)
Training Load = 178 (164)
Intensity = 81% (81%)

After the ride, we waited until Marco's Pizza opened at 11:00 and ordered pizza and beer (soda for me). Beer from the tap was off, so the others got free bottles of beer. Jhonar and Eric both showed up, as did Aaron (he didn't stay). We a good time reminiscing about the early days of the group, including how everybody connected into the group. I left before the party wrapped up. Got home, Ann was at a bell  workshop the entire day, so I had a small nap, watched some TV, and read. Went to the store in the afternoon to pick up some supplies for dinner. Then I finished up (finally) the 2023 event log, I don't think I'll try to recreate a similar list for earlier years, it's just too much work. I made macaroni and cheese for dinner, the recipe was from Mattie's Kitchen and was more involved than I expected. But it turned out well. I also roasted some broccolini, but it was a little overdone. But dinner was a success. Had a quiet evening, finishing The Photonic Effect and starting Gaudy Night, a Lord Peter Wimsey novel by Dorothy L. Sayers.

08-14-2026 Ocean Swim

Slept well and had an easy early morning for a change. I got up, had some cereal and a banana for breakfast, unloaded the dishwasher and put some dirty dishes in. Read and relaxed for a while, then I got ready for a swim down at Ventura Cove in Mission Bay. I put air in the bike tires and packed them into the car. Ann and I left around 9:30, no traffic to speak of on the way down there. When I unloaded the bikes, I noticed that the rear tire on my beach cruiser was flat. Dang it! It had seemed fine when I pumped it up earlier. So, no riding for me. Ann rode around Mission Bay while I went for a swim around the buoys in the cove. I ended up doing four laps and a little bit. Tried varying my breathing, but it seemed more natural for me to breathe every two strokes. Judging by my time, I was working harder than usual, so that may be why. Here are approximate splits for the four laps:
    Lap 1    0.19 mi    5:41
    Lap 2    0.19 mi    5:46
    Lap 3    0.20 mi    5:51
    Lap 4    0.20 mi    5:47

So, my speed was pretty consistent.

Avg pace = 1:42/100 yds (Zepp)
Total distance = 1434 yds
Elapsed moving time = 24:34 (Zepp)
Avg heartrate = 150 bpm (Zepp, possibly)
Relative Effort =  37 (possibly)
SWOLF = 85
Avg stroke rate = 31 bpm
Avg pull distance = 1.87 yds

Got out of the water, a little wobbly as usual, and then walked back to the car to get my clothes out. I walked to the shower station and rinsed off, then changed in the men's room nearby. Back to the car, packing the bikes in, then driving home, a little sad that we weren't able to ride around the bay together. The afternoon was quiet. I had a little nap, made an attempt to patch the inner tube on my beach cruiser, and worked some more on the 2023 event log. Ann and Emily went to a show at the Rady Shell in the evening, so I made some dinner and had a quiet evening watching TV and reading.

08-13-2026 Swim/Run

This was a quirky little exercise morning. Got up after a short sleep, we didn't get home from the concert until 11:50. I slept in the other room for most of the night, didn't want to disturb Ann. Got up a little after 7:00, although I had woken up a couple of times earlier. Packed my stuff up and did a little kitchen cleaning. I couldn't find my WWC card, wasn't sure where I had lost it. So I headed over to the WWC anyway, it was less crowded with swimmers when the gates opened, first day of school in Poway USD. Angela had found my card, so she gave it to me as I came into the club. I got lane 3 and ended up swimming three 500s with brief rests in between. Focused on stroke form and trying to keep my strokes long, with less success on the last 500. Here are the splits: 9:19, 9:20, 9:26. Getting a little better, now I'd like to be able to match these times without the short rests.

Avg pace = 1:52/100 yds (Video)
Total distance = 1500 yds (Video)
Elapsed moving time = 28:05 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 139 bpm (possibly)
Relative Effort = 25 (possibly)
SWOLF = 37
Avg stroke rate = 21 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.40 yds

Got done with the swim and had a quick dry to put my shoes on, then I stowed my backpack in a locker and went for a run following the usual WWC 5k loop. I was doing fine, focusing on keeping things going where I didn't upset all the good things. I turned the corner on RB Rd and, shortly after, I fell on the palms of my hands and my knees. Palms took the brunt of my weight, and I had just a couple of light scrapes on my knees, no free-flowing blood. I paused briefly, then continued, albeit a little slower and a lot more cautious. My middle mile was the slowest, I think I slowed down after the adrenaline rush from falling wore off. My last mile was the fastest by quite a bit, it also has a net downhill. I forgot my phone case, so I tracked the run using my watch.

Avg pace = 8:00/mi
Total distance = 3.15 mi
Elapsed moving time = 25:13
Avg heartrate = 154 bpm (Zepp, I don't think so)
Relative Effort = 41 (too high to be realistic)

After the run I showered in the locker room, changed, and headed over to the old HP Main Site Cafe to meet Brooke and Gary for coffee. Gary talked about his family, his granddaughter is in her last year of college. Sue continues to struggle with back pain. Brooke filled us in on Stephen's new job at GA, some retirement updates, and a recent reshuffling in management responsibilities between Alberto and Phuong. Was a nice casual conversation that took a while for us to catch up, then I headed home. In the late morning and early afternoon I called Ben and then Ross. Ben is all worried about how Ross being laid off will affect the situation at the lake house. Ross was a little uptight when I called him, they had a frustrating visit to Wells Fargo bank. But he seemed in a decent state about being laid off, it wasn't a surprise after all. We will talk in more detail about his plans when I'm in town next week. I watched some TV and had a short nap in the afternoon, then I went to Phil's for happy hour. Talked a little bit to Nathan and Britt, more to Andy Seitz and Avi. I may be able to connect for swimming with Andy. Ann and I watched TV after dinner, then it was pretty quiet after that. I put together a route for the Saturday Bisikleta ride and sent it to the DB members to review. The route is mainly a reverse of the first first Bisikleta ride with the OG riders, which took place on 8-15-20. Then I read for a bit before going to sleep (<>).

08-12-2026 Ride

Slept okay, not the best. Woke up around 5:00 and got up after 5:30. Had a bowl of cereal for breakfast, cleaned the kitchen dishes, then got ready for a ride with John. I took the normal way over there, with the exception of turning at Alpine Way, at moderate pace. Jayden was out front with John when I got there. We rode back down the hill to Sabre Springs Pkwy and took it to Poway Rd, turning left there. Across the freeway and up the short steep climb on Penasquitos Blvd before turning onto the 56 bike path. Then we rode to Salmon River Rd, got off the bike path there and took it south to Adolphia St. Down this hill, with its speed bumps, and over to Park Village Rd. John was slow on all the longer climbs, even the shallow ones. He likely didn't exercise so much during his summer trips, but he's working back into shape. We rode down to CdS and turned there to get back up to the 56 bike path. Took that down to CVR and used this road (going through morning school traffic) to get to Black Mountain Rd. We rode together on the flat sections, I gapped him on the little climb up to CdS and then waited for him after the light. I slowed down to ride with him until we got close to the turn, where he fell behind again. That's when I knew we had to skip any more unnecessary climbing. So we rode back to the 56 bike path and then used it to get to Sabre Springs Pkwy. Right turn there, enjoying the gradual descent to Poway Rd, where we turned and rode back to Springhurst Dr. I got out in front again but didn't stop this time. Headed up the hill and back to his place, riding to the top of Briarleaf Way and then back down to Dapple Ct, turning there and heading up to his house. He made smoothies for us, and we chatted about all of Jayden's activities. It was heating up, so I headed home, taking the standard way back via Bernardo Center Dr and benefiting from a tail wind on Pomerado Rd. Legs were tired at the end of the ride but not sore.

Avg speed = 15.2 mph (15.3 mph). Total mileage = 43.2 mi
Avg power = 122 W. Weighted avg power = 150 W
Total elevation gain = 2560' (2630')
Avg heartrate = 114 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 47 (49)
Training Load = 147 (151)
Intensity = 68% (70%)

Got home, didn't have a whole lot of time to relax before getting ready for my volunteer shift at the hospital. Shaved and showered, ate a little bit, then rode over there. I had some lunch, then started my shift. It seemed busier than usual, and I was generally moving until a little after 3:00, when I left early to get back home and change for a concert at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista. We left home a little after 3:30, endured heavy traffic as expected, and got down there around 4'50. Ann drove while I rested from a busy day to that point. We tailgate fairly quickly, then got in line to wait for the gates to open. Unfortunately, we found out, after waiting in line for about 30 minutes, that we were in the wrong line. I was upset and let the security person know that this was not handled well. So we walked over to the regular security/admission line and got in after an additional wait. Not great but not a disaster. When we got in we saw that the lawn area was closed, and we found out from a guide that our lawn tickets would be converted into seats. We ended up with seats that were in the furthest back section but center stage, so decent and more comfortable than the lawn, even with rented lawn chairs. The Romantics came on first, only a couple of original (or early) band members, the lead singer looked pretty weird and sounded strained on most songs. They saved their two big hits for last. Christopher Cross came on next, he was decent, more recognizable music, although his upper register is not there anymore. The musicians in his group were outstanding, and he played a few (not enough) guitar solos to prove that he is an excellent guitar player. This was a noisy crowd around us, lots of talking while the musicians were performing. I just don't understand this mentality. Why are they here if not to hear the music? Toto was the headliner, and they came on a little before 9:30, played until a little before 11:00. No encore, instead they brought out some of the artists from earlier to help them perform Africa, which everybody loved. Again, there was lots of talking from the people around us during their performance. Steve Lukather is the only remaining original member of the group, and many of their songs featured too much of his virtuoso and over-the-top guitar playing. It was technically great but theatrically too much. The other musicians were also pretty good session players that he had assembled, and he gave many of them their opportunity to showcase their playing during the concert. He did some of the singing as well; his voice is not a lead singer's voice. We headed back to our priority parking spot after the concert, and this turned out to be a real time-saver. It had a dedicated car lane basically back to the main city streets, so we didn't have to sit in car traffic at all. We were home by 11:50, which was delightful.

08-11-2026 Run/Ride

Slept a little unevenly, woke up before 5:30 and got up to have an early-morning run at moderate pace. Ran a 5k down by the park with negative splits but starting slowly. No stretching before, but my pace was easy.

Avg pace = 8:44/mi
Total distance = 3.16 mi
Elapsed moving time = 27:40
Avg heartrate = 122 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 6

Walked the rest of the way home, had just a little time to get ready for a coffee ride with Nel and Andy. Rode over the normal short way, got there just before Nel rolled up. He was nursing some injuries from a crash on his gravel bike on Friday. We were going to take it easy, so I hoped it would work out. We rode back down Bernardo Oaks Dr all the way to the RB Inn, rode through the parking lot to Sintonte Dr, then took it to Mirasol Dr, which we rode up to Pomerado Rd. Left there and down to head over the pedestrian bridge and through the mall parking lot to ride through Kit Carson Park to El Ku Ave. Up to Escondido Blvd, which we stayed on until turning right on 5th Ave to get to Broadway. Then we rode over to Grand Ave and to the Kettle. We stopped there for coffee, pastries, and good conversation (I paid). After the break we took Grand Ave up to Juniper St and used it to get to Sunset Dr. Down to BVP and back over to Kit Carson Park, where we cut in and took a path, including a sketchy little unpaved section, back to Beethoven Dr. From there we retraced our route back to Andy's house. It was warming up but not hot yet, so the little climbing sections were fine. I didn't stay long at Andy's before riding home, this time taking Rios Rd/Callado Rd through the neighborhood to Acena Dr, left there, and to Bernardo Center Dr via Lomica Dr. Home the normal way from there, no real stress on my legs on this ride.

Avg speed = 12.9 mph (13.1 mph). Total mileage = 24.6 mi
Avg power = 98 W. Weighted avg power = 128 W
Total elevation gain = 1400' (1380')
Avg heartrate = 103 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 21 (21)
Training Load = 74 (74)
Intensity = 58% (59%)

Got home just as Ann was heading off to the beach, so I had the house to myself in the late morning and early afternoon. Watched some TV, had a little bit to eat. In late afternoon Ann and I drove over to OtB to meet Emily and Caleb for happy hour one last time (for us) before they close this restaurant. Tacos were pretty good, beer was cheap, service was overall poor. Caleb and I had to wait for some of our orders longer than expected. We laughed about the things that can get me to dance, a new item has been added to the list. After we got home it was a quiet rest of the evening.

08-10-2026 Ride

Slept quite well, woke up early (<!>). I wanted to get a bike ride in before it got too hot, so I got ready and was heading out before 7:30. My power meter still wasn't connecting with my Wahoo, but I eventually got it to work, and off I went. I turned right on Duenda Rd and took Poblado Rd for a change. Over to Carranza Dr, turning right and taking it up to Pinzon Way to get over to Matinal Rd, which I took up to RB Rd. Then it was over to the 4S Ranch neighborhood, taking Alva Rd up to Ralphs Ranch Rd, turning there, and riding the old normal way through the rest of the neighborhood. I turned right on Four Gee Rd and took it to the top, where the gate was open. So I climbed Camino Santa Fe to its end, road quality is really poor. They are building new homes on a new road they've put in, so I turned on that road and climbed until I got to a section with large gravel rocks covering the road. I didn't want to get off my bike, so I turned around and rode back down and out of this neighborhood. Over to CdS, and west, riding down to the Del Sur neighborhood on the right and turning on Via Azul, then left to get to Via Mantova. That led to a circle, Via Monteverde, which took me to Via Bettona and out of the neighborhood using Via Verrazzano, back to CdS. I was slow-pacing it on this ride, kept that going as I took CdS past the 56 bike path and down the hill, turning into another neighborhood on Dormouse Rd, which has a tough little climb to navigate. Got to the top of the climb and then had a really fun descent to Park Village Rd. I turned right there and rode toward its end, doing the little loop using Celome Ln to get to the end of Park Village Rd, and then taking that road all the way back to CdS. I turned there and rode up to CMR, following it on its gradual climb up to Black Mountain Rd, where I turned left. I rode up to Maler Rd and turned right there, to see where it would take me. It ended in a cul-de-sac, I turned around and rode back down to Black Mountain Rd, turning right and taking it up to CVR. Up and then down to Dove Canyon Rd, riding up to CdN and turning right to get to Camino San Bernardo. Home the normal way from there, and I nearly accomplished my goal of getting 30 miles in on this ride. I was largely successful in getting done before it got really hot, it was about 85 when I got home.

Avg speed = 14.3 mph (14.4 mph). Total mileage = 29.6 mi
Avg power = 115 W. Weighted avg power = 152 W
Total elevation gain = 2260' (2210')
Avg heartrate = 110 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 30 (32)
Training Load = 102 (105)
Intensity = 69% (70%)

Got home about 9:40, I hadn't eaten anything yet, so I had some cereal. During the ride, I had put together a list of things that needed to be done, so after a short rest I got started on the list. I re-connected my Assioma pedals to my Wahoo, I think they should work as intended. Also gave my bike a thorough wash, including removing the rear cassette and cleaning it with pipe cleaners and mineral oil. I also figured out how to query Google by voice even when my phone screen is off, so I should now be able to ask questions while I'm riding, if I'm wearing my earbuds. In the afternoon, I (finally) washed off a couple of patches of bird poop from the driveway, then I trimmed the side bushes again. The second bush from the right has grown too big, so I spent a fair amount of time trimming it back significantly. I also gave the two smaller bushes a shaping trim. Maybe a little more work needs to be done with the second bush, but I think it's more in line with the other bushes' sizes now. After that I took a break and watched some TV for a while. Also read The Photonic Effect by Mike Chen, for a while. After dinner Ann and I watched some TV, then I worked on my 2023 event log for a while.

08-09-2026 Swim

Well, this was a frustrating day, all my fault. I was supposed to meet Charlie down in La Jolla for an ocean swim. Got up early for it, about 5:30, had enough time to do the dishes, organize what I was going to bring, and relax for a while. I left the house a little before 6:30, took the scooter down and made good time. Ran into some fairly heavy fog between the CdS intersection and Del Mar, but it generally cleared up by the time I got to the coast. I rode down to La Jolla Shores, since that's where Charlie and I have met before. I found one of the last spots in the parking lot and then went to look for the "stairs" that I had seen Charlie mention in his WhatsApp message. Got down to the shore, read his message again and saw that it said to meet at La Jolla Cove. Oops, my first mistake. I hustled back to my scooter and motored over into La Jolla village and then down to what I thought was La Jolla Cove (it's actually Children's Cove, and they are different). I called him from there and seemed to verify that I was at the right meeting spot, so I sat down to wait. And wait. No Charlie. I finally tried to call him, but by this time he had left his phone in the car and was by the actual meeting spot. Eventually, I figured I must be in the wrong place, so I rode over to where La Jolla Cove actually is (never been there before). I found a place to park and went to see if I could find Charlie in the water, but no such luck. I sent him a text indicating my mistake and said we should try again. Then I rode home, frustrated at myself for not doing a better job of arranging to meet him at the right place. Got home and took a few minutes to restock my swimming backpack, then I headed over to the WWC to get a swim in. Of course it was busy, and the two lanes with markers were occupied. But I wasn't in a hurry, so I sat and waited until lane 2 opened up. Got it and swam 1500 yds without stopping. Here are the splits for the three 500s: 9:16, 9:34, 9:31. I swam the last 500 breathing every three strokes for the most part. My stroke form is definitely poorer when I swim in this mode, perhaps I am marginally faster. Finished with a sprint in the last 50, so maybe that's why my last time is a little faster than my second 500.

Avg pace = 1:53/100 yds (Video)
Total distance = 1500 yds (Video)
Elapsed moving time = 28:21 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 147 bpm (possibly, seems high)
Relative Effort = 36 (possibly, seems high)
SWOLF = 37
Avg stroke rate = 21 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.41 yds

Got home and ate some cereal for breakfast, hadn't eaten anything other than a banana. Day was quiet, I had a nap and read a fair amount. I also worked over an hour updating my 2023 event log, slow going. In the early evening we went out for ice cream for dinner at Handel's in CMR. Was pretty good, definitely not healthy. I watched some TV in the evening, then went to bed.

08-08-2026 Ride

Well, this was an interesting ride, with some minor downers. Paula was riding from our house, and she was here early. She brought me a framed picture from our ride on Thursday, which was a sweet thing to do. Don't know where to hang this up, though. Apparently, Catalin has lots of camera and photo printing/framing gear. We were rolling before my usual target of 6:50, taking the route through the neighborhood and then the extended route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood. We got to Target, and Perse was there. Gradually, others showed up, so that at the start we had the following riders: Perse, Jed, Paula, James, Cam, and Arnold. We headed up PdS to Potomac Ridge Rd and took it over to Nicole Ridge Rd to get to CSB. James was out front, and he didn't have the route loaded, which was a little frustrating. We rode over to Deer Ridge Rd, turned right, then took a left on Deer Trail Dr, which got us to 4S Ranch Pkwy. Right turn there and down to Dove Creek Rd, which we stayed on until it teed into Cayenne Ridge Rd, turning right there. In the beginning of this ride Cam was riding well to stay with me in the front. We rode up and then down to Bernardo Center Dr, turning left there and waiting to make sure everybody turned as well. Up this little climb, then a right on Camino Crisalida, which has a nice little descent to an access path to get to an adjacent neighborhood. I waited to make sure that everybody turned onto Camino Crisalida, Jed and James were last, and I'm pretty sure that James saw us turn there. But he's a contrarian. We rode down the hill and into the other neighborhood, and I waited for James to show up. No James. So I rode back to look for him, didn't see him. That made me have to hustle to catch up with the others. We rode up Avenida de los Lobos until turning right onto Paseo Montanoso, which has a little steep stretch that was a workout. Around this turn is where James showed up, having taken a different way to get there. We were all back together, riding up to Corte Raposo and then taking an access road to another neighborhood and Andorra Way. This road turned into Del Diablo Way, which got us to Penasquitos Dr. Cam and I were out front on this stretch, and I again waited at the turn to make sure everybody made it, then pushed to get back to the front of the group. We rode down to CMR and turned right there. James took off and gapped us, but I knew we would catch him on the climb. I went pretty hard, not full gas, up this climb, and Cam was right there with me, Arnold wasn't too far back. The descent to the turn to stay on CMR was fun, then it was more climbing to get to the high school. Around here I missed a turn that was designated on the route, and that got me really screwed up. We - Arnold, Cam, and I - ended up turning on Black Mountain Rd, and that's when I knew I had missed the turn. But I wasn't done messing up. I had forgotten I'd shortened the route in this area, so the three of us missed the turn onto the 56 bike path that would have gotten us back on course. Instead, I took us down to Park Village Rd, sent the others a text to meet us up ahead, then guided us back to the meet-up spot. We rode over to CdS and then climbed back to the intersection with the 56 bike path, where the others were waiting for us. I should know better by now not to rely on my recollection of the route from putting it together the previous day or two, have to review it in the morning before the ride to be sure. I had burned a couple of matches to get us all back together, and it was getting warm by this time as well. We headed down the bike path, and again James pushed ahead, not knowing where we were going to turn. So I had to ride fast enough to keep him from missing the turn. We rode until turning right onto Carmel Country Rd, which is actually a pretty useful road for getting around in this area. It took us to Del Mar Heights Dr, where it turns into Hartfield Ave. I was out front with James, making sure we didn't get off-course again. A left turn on Half Mile Dr got us over to ECR, where we turned right and rode down the hill. I still wasn't sure at this point how my route was going to get us into RSF village, so I had to push hard to keep up with James out front. We turned right on San Dieguito Rd. He was in time trial mode, and another rider got out in front with him, while those of us in the back formed up a pace line, which allowed us to track the riders ahead of us down. Some SDBC riders passed us on the flats, not giving us much leeway to maneuver as they flew by. Arnold latched onto that group and rode ahead with them for a bit. We stopped for our break at the corner of El Apajo. It was definitely warm, and approaching hot, by this time. My left shifter battery had quit working in the flats, so I swapped it out while we were waiting, and all was good again. Perse split off from us and headed back directly from there, and the rest of us rode over to Via de Santa Fe and up to VdlV. Some more SDBC riders passed us on this road. By this time I figured that everybody knew how to get up to Paseo Delicias, so I didn't stop at the turn. The riders were slowing down by this point. I pushed to the turn, Cam wasn't too far back, and James was pretty far back by this point. We stopped in the shade, and we waited for him to catch up. Then we were on the way to Del Dios Hwy. He was ahead of us, so I tracked him down again, got ahead of everybody and slowed my pace, intending to ride up the climb with the lead riders, which turned out to be Jed, Arnold, and Cam. The four of us were together on the approach to the climb, I was out front. When the road tilted up, I just kept spinning, benefiting from a tailwind but definitely feeling the heat. I didn't look back as I climbed, and I gapped the others as we all found our paces. I got to the top first, and the others showed up, Arnold was next. I actually rode this climb faster than I had on Thursday, which was surprising. We waited in the shade for Paula and James to make it, which put James out front again. It was certifiably hot by this time, the breeze was nice, but staying in one place out in the sun was uncomfortable. I took off after James, and the others followed. My legs were tiring and sore from the previous day's hard run, so I was slowing down too. I slogged it up to the turn onto Via Rancho Pkwy ahead of the others, and I waved them all on as they passed and kept riding. I waited until Paula showed up and then slotted in behind her to make sure she was holding up okay. We did the gradual climb on this road, passing James, and around this time I increased my effort to track down the riders, Jed and Arnold, out in front. It was around this time that I noticed my power output wasn't showing on my Wahoo. So, no power data for this ride. They got slowed by a light, which allowed me to close the gap a little bit, then I caught up with them on the descent and passed Jed when the light turned at Felicita Rd and I zoomed through. I passed Arnold on the little climb just past the light and got to the gas station ahead of the others. James rode on the freeway, and the rest of us stopped very briefly before continuing on. I was riding with Paula in the back, she wanted a photo of us on the ride, so I snapped one on the bike path, then rode to catch up with the leaders. I stopped on the pedestrian bridge to take another photo with Paula, which put us in the back again. I'd told the others I wasn't planning on riding back to the starting point, so they didn't wait for me as they kept riding. Paula and I rode, slowly, up the climb to the park and stayed together until the turn onto Aguamiel Rd. She looked at her elevation and wanted to get to 3000', so she ended up riding up W Bernardo Dr to Duenda Rd, which got her to her target. She turned there, while I continued up to RB Rd. I saw a rider in the distance, which turned out to be Cam, who had slowed down more than the others. I started closing the gap between us, making the turn onto RB Rd and closing more once the climb began again. I caught him just before Matinal Rd and kept going, stopping at Via del Campo to give him a fist bump before turning around and heading home. Legs were tired and a little sore, but more significantly I was overall tired and hot. It was a fairly slow ride through the neighborhood back home, was glad to get there.

Avg speed = 15.2 mph (15.4 mph). Total mileage = 51.3 mi
Avg power = 140 W (estimated)
Total elevation gain = 3440' (3460')
Avg heartrate = 126 bpm
Relative Effort = 95 (this isn't an accurate reflection of how hard I worked on this ride) (100)

As usual, I was hungry when I got home, but my appetite was suppressed by the big effort. I ended up eating a little pasta and the rest of the pineapple. The fake Dr Pepper I'd bought the previous day at Von's tasted particularly good on this hot day. It was 96 deg again at the end of the ride, much hotter than I thought it was going to be on this day. I felt bad about subjecting the others to an inland ride with lots of climbing in these weather conditions. I was definitely tired from the ride but felt much better after a little nap in the afternoon. I charged my rear derailleur battery, checked battery connection for my power meter, but that needs more investigation. In the evening we drove to The Landings, a restaurant by Palomar Airport, for dinner and to see Whiskey Heat with some church folks. This was more of a social event than a music enjoyment event. Their music is decent, singing is very uneven, they need to do a better job picking songs that they can sing well enough. Dining area was outside, not as much jet noise as I feared. We met Tom and Cathy, cruise friends of Kay and Earl, they are pleasant to talk to. Got stuck talking to Kara about her girl hood pictures from when she lived in Japan. That was minor torture. I danced a little bit with Ann before we left, drove home with no incident and went to bed.
