03-26-2016 Ride

Solo ride in the morning initially, riding over to Dave's house via the freeway and BVP to Beethoven, then the trail cutting through the back end of Kit Carson Park.  I met up with him and John, and we headed over to Brotherton Rd and then up to Miller Ave.  Over to Citracado Pkwy and then on to Felicita Rd, taking it to Via Rancho Pkwy.  I had a generally decent climb up the steep section, not great but not awful.  Over to Valley Pkwy, taking it into town and getting onto 2nd Ave to connect to Grand Ave.  Right onto the 78, riding it all the way out to Bandy Canyon Rd.  I had another good stretch on the flats riding out in the valley, working pretty hard for about a mile.  Slowed down once we turned onto Bandy Canyon, riding with the others until we got to the place where it tilts up.  I was pretty slow on the climb, not a good effort.  Over to Highland Valley Rd, taking it to Pomerado Rd, where we turned left and rode up to Escala Dr.  This is not my favorite road, as I generally can't get up a lot of speed on the downhill to overcome the tough little climb back up.  Over to Duenda Rd and then to W Bernardo Dr, where I essentially retraced my original route to Dave's house, other than taking the bike path across Lake Hodges this time.  I saw the remnants of my broken sunglasses by the retirement home; they must have fallen out of my pocket earlier.  Smoothies at Dave's house were good, then I headed home by taking the normal route.  Still need a lot more miles, including mid-week rides, to get back in decent shape.

03-20-2016 Ride

Ride with Dave on a really foggy, misty morning.  I met him up at Jim's house.  The ride was not really wet, and the roads were somewhat damp but not wet enough to throw up spray.  I hit something in the road on Pomerado Rd that caused me to get a flat front tire.  So we cut the route short by turning on Ted Williams Pkwy and heading over to Rancho Carmel Dr, then continuing the time trial route.  The ride was okay, I just have a long way to go before I'm in decent cycling shape for both cardio and leg strength/stamina.

03-19-2016 Hike

This was the second of five planned hikes in Mission Trails Regional Park, where we hiked out to North Fortuna Peak and back, from the parking lot off Mission Gorge Rd.  The first mile and a little bit were flat, then it tilted up on a steadily increasing grade to the saddle point between North and South Fortuna Peaks.  I stayed with the slower hikers until just before the saddle, then I increased my pace.  After the saddle, there were a couple of steep rocky sections, with flatter sections in between.  I got to the top first, felt fine even though I had gone through a cold during the week.  Some coughing to clear out the accumulated congestion.  On the way back, I stayed near the end of the hiker line with Ann, to make sure she got down the steeper sections okay.  It was slow going, as the path was quite slippery.  Ann had a sore throat, so that slowed her down as well.  We took a slightly different route back, heading through the grassland area before cutting across the San Diego River to connect back to the road through the park.

03-19-2016 Ride

Drove over to John's house and met up with him and Jim.  We headed over to Scripps-Poway Pkwy and then rode up to the 67.  The climbs weren't as bad as I feared they would be, but I can tell I'm out of cycling shape.  It was good to be back on my light bike, and my rear wheel is working well.  The weather was foggy until we got to the top of the climb on the 67 by Mt. Woodson.  Then we rode back down into the fog to Highland Valley Rd, turning left and riding over to Archie Moore Rd.  Back to the 67 via this road, which has a short, fairly steep climbing section.  From there, we climbed back up to the pass by Mt. Woodson, then headed back to John's house by retracing our route.

03-12-2016 Ride

Posted long afterwards.  Looks like I rode to church on this Saturday morning, not sure why.  Ride from home past the park and over the freeway to BVP, using Midway Dr to get to Oak Hill Dr and then a left on San Pasqual Valley Rd.  Grand Ave to Juniper St and then 4th Ave.  I wonder what this one was all about.

03-06-2016 Ride

Time trial ride in the morning, meeting up with Jim at his house.  He and I hadn't ridden together in awhile, so it was nice to catch up with him.  The roads were wet from overnight rain, but it wasn't raining when we started.  We got about a mile into the ride, and it started to sprinkle a little bit, not too bad.  As we headed up Pomerado Rd, the rain got just a little bit heavier but not unpleasant.  We stopped for a donut at Winchell's, and when we got back on the route it wasn't raining.  We stayed dry until we got onto Rancho Carmel Dr.  From here all the way home, it rained, and it was fairly steady once we got onto Camino del Norte.  I was soaked and road-dirty by the time I got home, and the shower afterward felt particularly good.  No speed records at all this time.  Finished in about 1:10.

03-05-2016 Ride

Solo ride on a Saturday morning, when I couldn't get anybody else to ride along.  I was riding on my old bike (still waiting for my repaired rear wheel to be shipped back from Reynolds), and I had not been exercising much.  I had a couple of days earlier in the week where I was in pain around my right kidney any time I laid down and put any pressure on it.  It caused me a couple of uncomfortable nights sleeping on Tuesday and Wednesday, then it resolved itself early Thursday morning.  So I wasn't interested in setting any speed records, just to get some miles back on my legs.  Headed over the freeway to BVP and took it up to Citrus Ave,  Over to El Norte Pkwy, and then down to Broadway.  Out to Jesmond Dene Rd, with a fairly slow ride up to the top of the last little climb.  Out to Centre City Pkwy and then up to Deer Springs Rd.  Here I stopped briefly to eat a banana before continuing on.  Down to Twin Oaks Valley Rd and then back in toward San Marcos to get onto Barham Dr.  Back to Mission Rd, riding it to Washington Ave and then over to Valley Pkwy via Hale Ave and Tulip St.  Over to Centre City Pkwy and then home the normal way, feeling generally fine in my legs and not too back for my cardio.  It was a good distance and route to get back in the saddle.

Avg speed = 16.4 mph. Total mileage = 35.0 mi
Avg heartrate = 135 bpm
