03-27-2021 Ride

Ride from home with Jim and John, Laura was visiting.  I intended, but failed, to make a 30-mi route.  Through the neighborhood to RB Rd and over to Camino del Sur, taking it to Carmel Valley Rd.  This wasn't a fast-paced ride.  Carmel Valley Rd over to Del Mar Heights Rd, turning right and riding all the way down to PCH.  There are a couple of little climbs on this road that slowed me down.  Once we got to Del Mar, stopped while Jim pumped up his front tire, which had a slow leak.  We rode south, taking the normal way to the 56 bike trail and heading back to Camino del Sur.  Over to Carmel Valley Rd, where Jim had to stop and pump up his tire again.  We rode to the top of this gradual climb, waited for Jim, didn't see him, so we turned around and met him at Black Mountain Rd, where he had to fix his flat.  From there, it was back home via Dove Canyon Rd to RB Rd and back through the neighborhood, stopping initially at Jim's house to drop him off.  A very frustrating day for Jim.

03-22-2021 Ride

Solo ride, short and more casual, in the late afternoon before dinner.  Headed through the neighborhood up to RB Rd, and I could tell I was riding into the wind in general.  I turned into the 4S Ranch neighborhoods to the north of RB Rd and rode to the end of Camino San Thomas as well as Four Gee Rd.  Alas, neither one offers access to the roads leading up into the nearby hills.  Headed back to Camino del Sur and rode down to Paseo del Sur, turning there and riding back through that neighborhood, eventually getting to Lone Quail Rd and then back to RB Rd.  Back home the normal way through the neighborhood.  Legs felt tired on the ride from the previous two days.

Avg speed = 14.5 mph. Total mileage = 13.1 mi
Avg heartrate = 124 bpm
Total elevation gain = 920'

03-21-2021 Ride

Ride over to the Shell station on Via Rancho Pkwy to meet Avinoam Halpern later in the morning than usual.  We headed behind the mall to BVP and took it up to the 78, turning right then left onto Citrus Ave.  Back to BVP, continuing to Valley Pkwy to get to Lake Wohlford Rd.  On this climb, I rode faster than previous times but didn't compare my elapsed climbing time.  Got to the top and rode back down to meet Avi and ride back up.  We rode by the lake and turned left onto Woods Valley Rd.  This gradual downhill road can be a workout if you try to keep up a fast pace, and that's what we did.  I was slower on the climb to the top of Valley Center Rd, downhill was slowed somewhat by a headwind.  We gathered back together at the bottom, then turned onto El Norte Pkwy to get back to Centre City Pkwy.  Into town, then a slow stretch on the bike trail by the concrete river, taking it to Auto Park Way to get over to Valley Pkwy.  Up the gentle climbs and then down to Via Rancho Pkwy, turning left and riding back to Avi's street.  From there, I took the normal way home, slower than usual.

Avg speed = 15.7 mph. Total mileage = 40.1 mi
Avg heartrate = 119 bpm
Total elevation gain = 2640'

03-20-2021 Ride

Jim rode down to my house to start our ride but forgot his phone, so we rode back up to his place, via Azucar Way, then headed on Duenda Rd over to W Bernardo Dr.  Over the freeway and up BVP to Sunset Dr.  Up to Juniper St, taking it to Washington Ave and then to Broadway.  Out to Jesmond Dene Rd, where at the top ( I kept it above 10 mph on the climb) we started to feel the mist.  Up to Deer Springs Rd, where it was heavier going down the hill.  We turned right onto N Twin Oaks Valley Pkwy and rode for about 2.5 mi until the road started downhill.  Jim had a slow leak in his front tire, so he filled it up before we started heading back down.  Generally downhill all the way to Discovery St, where we stopped for coffee at a Starbucks that was too busy for my comfort.  While I was in line, Jim replaced his tube, then we headed back after finishing our coffee.  Barham Dr to Mission Rd to Centre City Pkwy, then back home the normal way.  I kept it above 10 mph on the little hill before the park and on the gradual climb back to Duenda Rd.  Felt good on this ride, just a little tired near the end but still energy in the tank.

Avg speed = 16.0 mph. Total mileage = 40.2 mi

03-13-2021 Ride

Planning for a ride with Jim, when I looked out just before our scheduled start time, it was sprinkling.  So I texted him, and we decided to ride but be ready to turn around if the rain picked up.  He met me at the house, and by the time he showed up the sprinkling had stopped.  We headed up to Duenda Rd and turned right to go a different way.  Before Matinal Rd, I turned right and we rode through the neighborhood to get to Matinal Rd.  Up to RB Rd, turning right and heading to Dove Canyon Rd, riding over to Carmel Valley Rd.  I was keeping a slower pace than usual.  Up and over to Black Mountain Rd, taking it to Carmel Mountain Rd and turning left.  I hadn't ridden this direction in a very long time,  there was more climbing, most of it gradual, than I expected.  Up and over to Rancho Carmel Rd, turning right and taking it and Sabre Springs Pkwy down to Poway Rd.  We got onto the bike path that follows the I-15 on its east side, taking it up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy, then heading east.  At this point, we had some help from a tailwind, and this grade seemed just right for me to make good time while climbing.  Over to Pomerado Rd, turning left and riding back to Poway Rd.  We took it up to Midland Rd, headed over to Twin Peaks Rd, then rode up to Espola Rd.  Here was another gradual climb, again aided somewhat by a tailwind, so this was a nice section.  Back home from here via RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr and then the normal way back to Jim's house.  Smoothies and a nice conversation before I headed home.  It was a shorter ride but a good one, avoiding wet weather.

Avg speed = 15 mph. Total mileage = 31.3 mi
Avg heartrate = 115 bpm
Total elevation gain = 2140'

03-07-2021 Ride

Time trial route with John and Jim.  I pushed it up the hill to meet them and kept a decent pace until we got onto Pomerado Rd.  I didn't let it all hang out, making good but not great time.  On the downhill section, John was riding fast, so we kept the pace together.  I started out the Poway Rd section slower but picked up the pace in the middle, and I pushed harder on the Sabre Springs Pkwy section than normal.  I also had a good section on that little climb up Camino del Norte but missed the light at the bottom.  From there, I rode about as fast as I could to the end, and finished right at 1:00.

Avg speed = 17.8 mph. Total mileage = 17.8 mi
Avg heartrate = 114 bpm (new FitBit is not getting all the beats)
Total elevation gain = 1090'

03-06-2021 Ride

Ride from Jim's house with him and John, heading over to W Bernardo Dr via Duenda Rd and then across the freeway to get to Via Rancho Pkwy.  Up and over to Del Dios Hwy, felt a little stronger than normal on parts of the climb to get there.  Down the hill, I noticed that the wind was working against us.  We rode through the RSF village, where there were a lot of new and classic sports cars parked.  Down to El Camino Real, where I turned left and waited for the others to catch up.  I missed John riding past the turn but saw Jim soon after doing the same thing.  So I headed after him to catch him and let him know.  We turned around but I learned later that John had kept going.  We continued on our route down to Via de la Valle and back to El Camino Real.  At the turn, I called and texted John to let him know where we would wait for him.  Then we rode up to Del Mar Heights Rd, it was a slower climb than in the past for me.  By that time, John had replied that he was on his way, so we gathered back together and kept going on Del Mar Heights Rd, taking it to Carmel Valley Rd, then to Dove Canyon Rd.  From there, it was the normal way back to Jim's house, via RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr.  Smoothies after the ride, I was feeling it more than I should have.

Avg speed = 15.9 mph. Total mileage = 36.0 mi
Avg heartrate = 111 bpm (with stops)

03-05-2021 Ride

Ride over, starting from home around 12:20, to meet Avinoam Halpern at the Shell station on Via Rancho Pkwy.  We rode behind the mall over to BVP, then took it to San Pasqual Rd to get into the valley.  The first part of the ride was fairly casual for me, then I picked up the pace starting with the downhill and continuing on Old Milky Way, where Avi was riding along.  Fairly fast on the 78 stretch, not all out but fairly close to it for me.  We were helped by a tailwind, which started working against us after we turned onto Bandy Canyon Rd.  I slowed down on this part, and my climb out of the valley was not my strongest.  I got to the top and turned around to meet Avi and ride back up the last bit.  Over to Highland Valley Rd, taking the downhill section pretty fast, but I was slow on the flats to get to Pomerado Rd, due to a headwind, tiredness, and the heat.  The ride over the freeway was super fast, here the wind was helping again.  From there, I headed back home the normal way after saying goodbye to Avi.  Above 10 mph on the last two little climbs, although I was slow back across the freeway.

Avg speed = 16.6 mph. Total mileage = 24.4 mi
Avg heartrate = 128 bpm (with stops)
Total elevation gain = 1350'
