Ride over, in the dark, to John's house. My front derailleur still wasn't shifting properly, even after I tried to fix it the previous evening. So I kept in the upper chainring this entire ride, meaning less spinning and more pushing. It was misting, heavily in some places, on the way over. I had my bike lights on for most of the way over, needing the front one to see where I was going for about the first half. I got to John's, where he, Jim, and Dave were already there. We headed up to the top of Pomerado Rd, me taking my time because of the gearing issue and the thought that I was going to be putting in >50 mi. Down to Miramar Rd, taking this out to Eastgate Mall with all four of us riding together for the most part. Jim doesn't lead much, which is unfortunate. So it was mostly me and John, with some Dave. We went over to Genesee, where the roads were fairly slick and the mist was heavy. Down this hill, a little scary, then a slow climb up to Torrey Pines Rd, a grind for me in my upper chainring. I had replaced the battery in my heartrate sensor, and apparently it's not missing beats like it may have before. So my heartrate was higher than I would have expected, based on my fitness level. I was a little freaked on the Torrey Pines downhill because of the slick roads and my own unease. We headed over to Carmel Valley Rd and took it over to El Camino Real and the bike trail. Then up the bike trail, all of us basically riding together this whole time. At the place where the bike trail exits the neighborhood, we met a couple of novice riders, one of whom had a flat. We tried to help them out with pumping up the tire and even patching the tube but didn't have the tools to get the guy's rear wheel off. John took off ahead of us, to get back home in time for church. So the three of us rode to Camino del Sur, Jim riding well on the first little climb. Headed up to Black Mountain Rd, where I decided to split off (weather and gearing getting to me) and head home. The mist was really heavy in places here. Over to Carmel Valley Rd, slowing down due to tiredness. I took this road to Dove Canyon Rd, then up and over to RB Rd, slow but steady. Down RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr and back home the normal way.
