01-31-2021 Ride

Time trial ride with John from my house up to Jim's place.  Temperature was low but didn't feel as cold as the previous day.  Right after the three of us started riding, Jim had to stop and adjust his seatpost.  Then we were off, and he was riding faster than usual, while John was lagging.  Just before the turn onto Poway Rd, Jim had a flat, so we took another break.  Other than that, it was a normal ride, I hit both of the key stoplights and ended up finishing in 1:02:55.

Avg speed = 16.9 mph. Total mileage = 17.8 mi

01-30-2021 Ride

Solo ride over to John's house, taking Azucar through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd and then to W Bernardo Dr.  I decided to take the other route, riding up past work to Bernardo Center Dr and then to Camino del Norte.  To Carmel Mountain Rd to get to Rancho Carmel Dr and Sabre Springs Pkwy.  Then up to his place, keeping it above 10 mph on that little climb.  Jim was supposed to join us, but he didn't get the messages until too late, so it was just us two.  We headed up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy and turned right, going downhill to Mercy Rd and then turning right onto Black Mountain Rd.  That little climb up to the 56 bike trail was challenging.  Then we headed down to El Camino Real, making pretty good time.  Over to the coast, then up the inside route at Torrey Pines, I think I like this route better because it compresses the pain into a smaller distance and time.  Then it was over to Genesee Rd, taking it to Eastgate Mall and then to Miramar Rd.  From there, it was the normal way back to John's house, although I was slowing down due to effort and knowing that I still had to ride home.  Ok on the climb up to the top of Pomerado Rd, not great.  I kept a steady pace going home via Pomerado Rd and RB Rd, nothing fast but my legs didn't cramp up.  Was tired when I got home.

01-24-2021 Ride

No ride, due to rainy weather, on the Saturday before, so I was glad to get out on the time trial ride with Jim and John.  It was overcast, so the temperature didn't rise as much as usual.  But I was bundled up enough so it wasn't much of a problem, other than cold fingers at times.  Finished in about 1:03.

Avg speed = 16.6 mph. Total mileage = 17.8 mi
Total elevation gain = 1090'

01-16-2021 Ride

Solo ride over to John's house, taking Azucar and RB Rd to get to Pomerado Rd.  From there, it was the normal route.  I kept a faster pace than in the past on the way over, including staying above 10 mph on the little hill climb up to his house (it was an effort).  I met up with him and Jim, and we rode toward the top of Pomerado Rd initially.  Jim realized he left his water bottles in his truck, so we waited for him just past Scripps-Poway Pkwy.  We continued up to the top, then down to Kearny Villa Rd, heading south until it turned into Mesa College Dr.  At this point, the clamp holding Jim's seatpost in place stripped out, so he couldn't keep his seat in its proper place.  We decided to turn around and, first, see if the Trek bike store was open (it wasn't).  So John and I rode back at a faster pace, while Jim trailed back.  I pushed the pace pretty hard on this return.  Couldn't sustain my desired pace on the generally flat section by Miramar MCAS.  Decent time up Pomerado Rd, again keeping it above 10 mph on the last part.  I was ahead of John by this time, so I kept going back to his house, where I picked up Jim's truck and met him at the top of Pomerado Rd.  He gave me a ride home from there.

It was an okay ride for me, I put out a bigger than normal effort (see heartrate below), felt fine later.

01-10-2021 Ride

Time trial with Jim, as John bowed out, maybe because of the higher effort ride the previous day.  Both Jim and I kept the pace dialed way back, it was fine for me.  Finished in 1:10.

Avg speed = 15.1 mph  Total mileage = 17.9 mi
Avg heartrate = 138 bpm
Total elevation gain = 1090'

01-09-2021 Ride

Ride from home with John and Jim.  I was originally intending to make it relatively short and easy, and I was only half successful.  We headed through the neighborhood to RB Rd, then to Camino San Bernardo.  Over to Dove Canyon Rd from there, then onto Carmel Valley Rd and up the little climbs.  Waited for the others at the top, then we turned left onto Black Mountain Rd and took it into Mira Mesa, turning left onto Westview Pkwy.  This part of the ride was quite steep for a little section, then it flattened out a little bit up to Mira Mesa Blvd.  We headed past but had to turn around then the road dead-ended.  Used Mira Mesa Blvd to get to Scripps Ranch Blvd, and took it up past Lake Miramar to Spring Canyon Rd.  This stretch has a 7-9% grade, and it was definitely a workout.  Right onto Spring Canyon, which had a more gentle grade up to the top of Pomerado Rd.  This was a nice little stretch of road.  Then we stayed on Pomerado Rd down into and through Poway.  There was a group of other riders that provided some challenge to catch up with and pass.  Then it was down from the hospital to RB Rd, where I felt my rear derailleur cable break when I tried to shift.  So I did the last stretch on RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr to Duenda Rd in my highest rear gear, still able to switch between upper and lower front chainrings.  Smoothies at Jim's house before heading home.  Short distance, but the elevation gain was fairly significant.

Avg speed = 14.5 mph  Total mileage = 25.5 mi
Avg heartrate = 139 bpm
Total elevation gain = 2030'

01-08-2021 Ride

Ride on a Friday afternoon over the freeway to the Shell station by the Park n Ride, where I met Avi Halpern for a ride.  We headed behind the mall over to BVP and then to San Pasqual Rd to get into the valley.  The weather was a little warm but not too bad.  Over to the 78 via Old Milky Way, and here I pushed the pace because I wanted to get through this stretch as quickly as possible.  I got out ahead of Avi here, and I think he was pushing his pace to keep up.  Slowed down and rode together on the Bandy Canyon Rd stretch until it tilted up.  This little climb was a challenge as always.  I got to the top and went back down to Avi, but he wasn't too far behind.  We rode to Highland Valley Rd and then down that steep part before connecting back up and riding together for most of the flat section, with me getting a little separation at the end.  Back to the starting point, and from there I took the normal way home.  Felt good on the ride, I rode hard for portions of it.

Avg speed = 16.8 mph. Total mileage = 24.3 mi
Avg heartrate = 142 bpm
Total elevation gain = 1310'

01-03-2021 Ride

Solo ride, everybody else was unavailable.  Followed the time trial route to Ave la Valencia, turning left and taking it all the way to its end, looping around on Silver Saddle Ln.  Headed back down to Ave Florencia, where I turned left and rode up to Stone Canyon Rd.  Back onto Pomerado Rd, taking it to Twin Peaks Rd and turning right.  Up that little climb, then down to Carmel Mountain Rd, where I turned left and stayed on it, over a couple of little climbs, until I got to Black Mountain Rd.  Right here, taking it back to Carmel Valley Rd.  From there, it was the normal way home via Dove Canyon Rd, RB Rd, and through the neighborhood.  This route is either up or down, no real flat sections.

Avg speed = 15.1 mph. Total mileage = 20.4 mi
Avg heartrate = 144 bpm
Total elevation gain = 1700'

01-02-2021 Ride

Solo ride from home, heading through the neighborhood to RB Rd and up Lone Quail Rd, turning right on Potomac Ridge Rd to get into that neighborhood, where I was looking for alternative routes through it, to no avail.  I ended up backtracking and getting onto Paseo del Sur to ride back to Camino del Sur, where I turned left.  Over to Carmel Valley Rd, turning right and taking it to Del Mar Heights Rd.  Left onto Old Carmel Valley Rd, which dropped me onto the 56 bike trail, took it down to El Camino Real, where I turned right and rode through Del Mar Heights and down into the flats, up to Via de la Valle.  Turned right here and took it to Calzada del Bosque to get over to Via de Santa Fe and El Apajo, to San Dieguito Rd.  Up the 3 Witches climb, taking it in a measure way and keeping my speed above 10 mph the whole way.  Back onto Camino del Sur, taking it to RB Rd and then home via W Bernardo Dr.

Avg speed = 16.1 mph. Total mileage = 35.1 mi
