02-28-2021 Ride

Ride with Pat Ritz, starting from his house in Irvine.  I won't detail the route, which was really convoluted and involved 10 miles of trying to find a guy's house in Irvine that Pat needed to visit in order to get his water bottle back.  It was a nice day for riding, but we didn't really push the pace much, and it was fairly flat.  We ended up in Corona del Mar, where Ann picked us up and took us back to the house, had lunch together afterward, so it was a good day.

02-27-2021 Ride

Solo ride initially over to John's house, going through the neighborhood to W Bernardo Dr and then to RB Rd to get to Pomerado Rd.  From there, it was the normal route, but I dialed by effort back, knowing the ride coming up.  Met up with John and Jim, and we rode over to Scripps-Poway Pkwy, taking it up to the 67.  This was challenging as usual, maybe more so.  It wasn't too cold, I'm just not in the kind of shape I have been in the past.  Took the 67 to Highland Valley Rd, turning left there and riding back to Pomerado Rd.  I put in some effort on the climbs up to this point, including climbing up to the top of Highland Valley Rd.  From there, my legs were feeling it.  Not so bad on the downhills, but once we started climbing again on Pomerado Rd, I was slower than usual.  Again, back to John's house the same way, I was really slow on that last little climb to his neighborhood.  He made smoothies, delicious, and I was fortunate to get a ride home from Jim.  This was the first ride in a while where I felt worn out during the ride.

02-26-2021 Ride

Ride over to Avinoam Halpern's house, following the normal route.  This was a mid-morning, early-afternoon ride, and the temperature was noticeably warm, especially on the climb on Via Rancho Pkwy.  I did okay on the climb, met Avi, and we headed down toward Del Dios Hwy.  After turning onto this road, we started downhill, and after a while I noticed he wasn't behind me.  So I rode back and found him inspecting his rear tire, whose sidewall had been damaged by his brake shoe malfunctioning.  So we rode back to his place, and he was done for the day.  I decided to get some more miles in, so I rode back toward home, then turned left onto Via Loma Vista, taking it to Bernardo Ave.  Over to Gamble Ln, where I turned right and rode for a bit before turning around and heading back to Bernardo Ave, trying to find the way to get into Escondido from the west side of I-15.  Bernardo Ave has a barrier in the road, but you can ride around it, and that's the solution.  Turns into 11th Ave, and I took it to Valley Pkwy, turning right and riding into town on 2nd Ave and then to Juniper St.  Over to Sunset Dr and down to BVP, where there was road work but the bike lane wasn't impacted too much.  Home the normal way from here, a little slower than normal across the freeway and on the last two climbs.

02-20-2021 Ride

Ride from home with John and Jim, heading out to BVP the normal way and taking it up to Valley Pkwy.  I was riding at a steady pace, not screaming but putting in some effort.  We turned onto Lake Wohlford Rd and rode up to the village.  I was slower on the climb, plodding in my pace.  When I got to the top, I turned around and rode down to where John was, then rode back before turning around again and riding back to Jim.  We continued around the lake and eventually back to Valley Center Rd.  Unlike the last time we rode here, the wind was not favorable, so it was more of an effort to keep a decent pace.  I got out ahead of the others on the climb up to the top of Valley Center Rd grade (stayed above 10 mph but it was an effort), then sped down the grade.  Waited for them at the bottom, then we continued back the way we came.  I kept up a pretty good pace during this ride, didn't feel worn out during the ride.  Above 10 mph on the last two little climbs as well.

02-15-2021 Ride

Solo ride through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd and then to W Bernardo Dr to get to RB Rd.  Down to Bernardo Center Dr, then over to Pomerado Rd through Bernardo Oaks.  Up to Pomerado Hospital, where I met up with John and Jim.  John was there to pick up Dave later after his PT appointment.  We headed back down Pomerado Rd to RB Rd, turning right and taking the old time trial route over to Twin Peaks Rd.  Then it was down to Community Rd and over to Poway Rd, back onto the old route.  We stayed on it until we got to the 56 bike trail.  I was riding slower, generally staying with the others or getting out a little ahead on the uphill sections.  Using the bike trail, we rode down to Camino del Sur, and I kept falling behind on the downhill sections (I think my front tire pressure was low, slowing me down).  Over to Carmel Valley Rd.  Around this time, I needed to pee and was thinking about where to stop or whether to cut my ride short to get home.  I decided to ride up to the ball fields at the top of Carmel Valley Rd, but I couldn't find any restrooms there.  So I rode back down and kept going.  After a while, it wasn't as much of a problem.  Over to Camino del Norte, taking it to Carmel Mountain Rd, following our new time trial in reverse.  We turned onto Ted Williams Pkwy, back to the old route, and I did okay on the mild climbing sections.  Back to Pomerado Rd, which we took to our starting point.  After a short break, I headed home, fairly slowly because I needed to pee again, taking RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr and then home.  Felt good on the ride, a couple of times with some push in my legs, although I didn't really go too fast on this ride.  Was tired later in the day.

02-14-2021 Ride

Time trial ride with John from my house, Jim wasn't feeling well.  I started kinda strong and kept it going until the turn onto RB Rd, when I dialed it back and rode with John until past the turn onto Pomerado Rd.  Not super fast up to the hospital, but we made good time from there all the way to Sabre Springs Pkwy.  I didn't push it there, kept it dialed back until by the post office, where I stretched a little bit and kept a good pace, over 15 mph, up the little climb on Twin Peaks Rd.  Hit the light just right and made decent time to HP, where I waited for John.  Not too fast on the section up to the downhill, but we rode quickly after crossing RB Rd.  I finished in 1:00:14, could have gotten under an hour on this route by pushing harder at several points.

Avg speed = 17.7 mph. Total mileage = 17.8 mi

02-13-2021 Ride

Solo ride after John said he wasn't riding and Jim woke up sick.  I got a late start, went to Discount Tire to get a leaky tire patched.  Through the neighborhood to RB Rd and up to Dove Canyon Rd, taking it to the shopping center, where I stopped at Donut Touch and had a couple of donuts before continuing.  Stayed on Lone Quail Rd until Del Sur Ridge Rd, then Nighthawk Ln to Potomac Ridge Rd and Paseo Del Sur.  I was not pushing the pace, other than trying to keep it above 10 mph on the uphill sections.  Down to Camino del Sur taking it to Carmel Valley Rd, then turning right onto Del Mar Heights Rd.  Down to Carmel Canyon Rd, taking it to get to Carmel Country Rd.  Over to the 56 bike trail, which I took back to Camino del Sur, staying on this road back to RB Rd, and taking the W Bernardo Dr route back home.  Felt fine on the ride, a couple of places where I was able to push it and keep up a steady pace.

Avg speed = 16.4 mph. Total mileage = 30.8 mi

02-06-2021 Ride

Ride up, via Azucar Way, to Jim's house, where I met him and John.  We headed down Duenda Rd to W Bernardo Dr and then over the freeway to Via Rancho Pkwy, using it to get to Felicita Rd, under I-15, and then left onto Redwood St.  Over to 9th Ave, turning left and riding up and over that little hill before heading onto Auto Pkwy to get to Valley Pkwy.  Left here, then a right back onto 9th Ave.  Left on Hale Ave, then right onto Harmony Grove Rd, taking it to get onto Kauana Loa Dr, which was shorter than I remembered and had a steep little section in it.  Right onto Country Club Dr to get back over to Auto Pkwy, then left onto Mission Rd.  This section was fast, John was pushing the pace, and it is gently downhill for quite a while, with just a couple of little bumps to get over.  We turned right onto Buena Creek Rd and took it to Twin Oaks Valley Pkwy.  This climb is gradual for most of it, with a steeper section just at the end before dropping down again.  Similarly for Twin Oaks Valley Pkwy and Deer Springs Rd, where the only tough part near the end is about 0.75 mi long.  Then it was back home via Centre City Pkwy, pretty fast into the city, then I started to slow down a little.  John kept the pace going and I tagged along, including a very fast stretch across I-15.  Was able to keep it above 10 mph on the little climb as well as the stretch up W Bernardo Dr to Duenda Rd.  Finished with smoothies at Jim's house, which were pretty delicious.

Avg speed = 16.4 mph. Total mileage = 39.2 mi

02-05-2021 Ride

Solo ride over to the Shell station on Via Rancho Pkwy to meet up with Avi Halpern for a Friday afternoon ride.  We headed over to Citracado Pkwy via Felicita Rd and some back neighborhood roads, two of which were really steep for short stretches.  Just before we got onto Citracado Pkwy was the highest point of the ride, by the way.  Then we headed over to Harmony Grove Rd, taking it, with a steady headwind to Elfin Forest Rd and then into San Elijo Hills.  I did okay on the climbs here, not great but feeling pretty good.  Hooked back up with Avi at the turnaround point, and we headed back, enjoying the downhill and then getting pushed by the tailwind to make the gradual climb back into Escondido easier.  We turned on Valley Pkwy and rode back by Avi's house before I continued home the normal way from there.  I couldn't keep my pace above 10 mph on the climb just past the freeway but kept it above 10 mph on the little climb on Aguamiel Rd.  Nice temperature on this ride.
