Ride over to Avinoam Halpern's house, following the normal route. This was a mid-morning, early-afternoon ride, and the temperature was noticeably warm, especially on the climb on Via Rancho Pkwy. I did okay on the climb, met Avi, and we headed down toward Del Dios Hwy. After turning onto this road, we started downhill, and after a while I noticed he wasn't behind me. So I rode back and found him inspecting his rear tire, whose sidewall had been damaged by his brake shoe malfunctioning. So we rode back to his place, and he was done for the day. I decided to get some more miles in, so I rode back toward home, then turned left onto Via Loma Vista, taking it to Bernardo Ave. Over to Gamble Ln, where I turned right and rode for a bit before turning around and heading back to Bernardo Ave, trying to find the way to get into Escondido from the west side of I-15. Bernardo Ave has a barrier in the road, but you can ride around it, and that's the solution. Turns into 11th Ave, and I took it to Valley Pkwy, turning right and riding into town on 2nd Ave and then to Juniper St. Over to Sunset Dr and down to BVP, where there was road work but the bike lane wasn't impacted too much. Home the normal way from here, a little slower than normal across the freeway and on the last two climbs.
Avg speed = 15.6 mph. Total mileage = 22.8 mi
Avg heartrate = 130 bpm
Total elevation gain = 1720'
