04-30-2021 Ride

Solo ride in the later afternoon over to the Shell station on Via Rancho Pkwy to meet Avi Halpern for an afternoon ride and a beer.  My phone was low on battery, so I only tracked the ride on my FitBit.  We headed over to BVP via Beethoven Dr and then up to San Pasqual Rd, deciding on the spur of the moment to turn right and avoid the road work on BVP.  It was a generally hot day and even hotter in the valley, so climbing out on the 78 was a chore.  We turned right on Citrus Ave and took it all the way over to El Norte Pkwy.  I was feeling the dry heat by then, slowed down a little bit.  Stayed on this road over to Woodland Pkwy, and from here it was generally downhill to Rancheros Dr, where we turned right and rode up to Lost Abbey.  Beer tasted great, my throat was really dry.  Went back via Barham Dr to Mission Rd, then a right onto Auto Pkwy.  We turned right onto Citracado Pkwy and rode by the new hospital and Stone Brewery, then Andreesen Dr to Enterprise Dr and Harmony Grove Rd.  Right onto Hale Ave, then a jog on Avenida del Diablo to get to Citracado Pkwy and up to Valley Pkwy.  Down to Via Rancho Pkwy, where Avi put in a big effort on the little climb and it was all I could do to keep up with him until he ran out of gas before the top.  Stopped briefly at his driveway before heading home, slowly.  I was pretty gassed by this time, really slow up the last two little climbs and glad to be done with this particular ride.

04-29-2021 Ride

Thursday afternoon ride from work with Blair, James, and Justin, starting from the back parking lot.  I had ridden into work and didn't notice that my cyclometer battery had died, so no real-time We rode out Bernardo Center Dr to Carmel Valley Rd. up the hill and down to Camino del Sur.  I pushed the pace on that little hill, felt pretty okay.  Justin was feeling it, his first time having a longer, more significant climb to negotiate.  Stayed together after turning onto Camino del Sur for the most part up to San Dieguito Rd.  Separated on the gradual climb into 4S Ranch but not too much, we tried to keep together.  Turned left onto Four Gee Rd and rode through this neighborhood, eventually getting over to Alva Rd to ride back to RB Rd.  Back to HP using Via del Campo.  For a little stretch, I got James to push his pace, and he has a good stroke on the flats.

Avg speed = 13.0 mph. Total mileage  = 13.7 mi

04-23-2021 to 04-25-2021 Camping Trip

Camping trip to William Heise County Park up by Julian.  Weather was breezy and cool but not really cold.  On Saturday, we hiked up the Canyon Oaks Trail in the morning and the Cedar Trail in the afternoon.  Got to have a campfire, so we used the Dutch oven to make Berry Camping Cake and Party Enchiladas.  Grilled vegetables and sausage on Friday night, eggs with the leftovers for Sunday breakfast.  We stayed at camping stop 64 and tried to remember where we had camped in this campground the last time.  I didn't remember much about the previous trip, but the drive in looked familiar, and I remember hiking the Cedar Trail before as well.  I think this was the earlier trip where we were woken up in the morning by a group of young people exercising in an open meadow at 7:00 in the morning.

Thursday afternoon ride, presumably with others, from work, posted after time had passed.  Headed from work down to RB Rd, taking a right and heading up to Espola Rd, then down to Twin Peaks Rd and Camino del Norte, turning right onto Bernardo Center Dr and then onto W Bernardo Dr to get back to work.  Then I rode home as well, finishing out the ride.

04-18-2021 Ride

Time trial ride with Jim and John.  I got off to a little bit of a slow start, my cyclometer sensor was rubbing, but I powered up the hill after fixing it.  Once I got to RB Rd, I decided to push harder than usual on the gradual climb up to Pomerado Hospital.  From there, I kept up a fast pace all the way to Sabre Springs Pkwy, where it wasn't my fastest segment.  Similarly slower by the post office, but from there I really tried to keep up a good pace.  Finished in 59:06, which I believe is a new Post-Israel PR.

Avg speed = 18.0 mph. Total mileage = 17.8 mi
Avg heartrate = 124 bpm
Total elevation gain = 1090'

04-17-2021 Ride

Drove with Jim to Alpine, the Rite Aid parking lot, where we met John for a ride up to Guatay and back.  We stayed on Alpine Blvd through the town and out to E Willow Rd, where we got on I-8 and rode on the shoulder out to the 79.  Rode to Descanso Junction and stayed straight, on Old Hwy 80, taking it to Guatay.  The ride out was nearly all climbing but never super steep, just a steady grade.  That made the ride back fast and fun.  On the way back we looped through Descanso before retracing the rest of the route.  I felt fine on the ride, stopping every few miles on the climb to wait for John and Jim.  I pushed the pace on the way back, trading leads at times with John and not settling for coasting all the way back.

04-10-2021 Ride

Ride up, via Azucar Way, to Jim's house to meet him and John for a ride.  We headed over to W Bernardo Dr and then over the freeway to Via Rancho Pkwy, taking it up to Valley Pkwy to get to Citracado Pkwy.  It was really foggy and misty at the start, then clear in Escondido.  Over to Harmony Grove and down into Elfin Forest, where it was foggy again.  I did pretty well on the climb up into San Elijo Hills, mostly keeping it over 10 mph except for one little stretch.  We gathered back up, then headed down to Rancho Santa Fe Rd and took it up into San Marcos.  Right on San Marcos Blvd, then another right on Discovery St to follow the normal route over to CSUSM.  From there, it was the normal way, via Centre City Pkwy, back home, taking W Bernardo Dr back to Jim's house for smoothies.  Good ride for me, I had some stretches where I felt I could sustain a decent uphill pace, including the little climb into San Marcos.

Avg speed = 16.4 mph. Total mileage = 35.7 mi

Ride in the afternoon from work with James and Blair.  We did the loop down W Bernardo Dr to RB Rd, up to Espola Rd, then onto Twin Peaks Rd to El Camino Norte and back to the site the normal way.  I took it slow to match pace with the others.  It was a nice day for a ride, a little breezy but I didn't notice it too much.

04-03-2021 Ride

Posting this ride after some elapsed time, so not many details.  Looks like I rode over to John's house, using W Bernardo Dr to get to RB Rd and then to Pomerado Rd.  From there, it was the normal route to his place.  We headed back down to Poway Rd and then took Rancho Penasquitos Rd to the 56 bike path.  Down to El Camino Real, heading south until we took a right on Carmel Mountain Rd and then a left onto Vista Sorrento Pkwy.  We rode to Sorrento Valley Blvd and then rode the climb up, turning right onto Camino Santa Fe, which I had never taken in this direction.  Over to Carroll Rd, where we took a left and used it to get to Miramar Rd.  From there, it was the normal way back to his house, up Pomerado Rd.  I retraced my route home.

Avg speed = 16.4 mph. Total mileage = 49.0 mi
Avg heartrate = 120 bpm
Total elevation gain = 2810'

04-03-2021 Ride

Ride over to John's house, taking RB Rd to Pomerado Rd (it's a little easier).  I took my phone but kept it off because it hadn't charged overnight.  It was foggy and a little misty on the ride over.  Made pretty good time, keeping it above 10 mph on the little climb up to his house.  When I got there, we turned around and rode back down the hill and turned left onto Poway Rd, riding over to the 56 bike trail.  Down to El Camino Real, heading south to get over to Sorrento Vista Pkwy.  Then we rode over to Sorrento Valley Rd and turned left, taking the 4th of July course in reverse, it had been quite a while that I rode up this grade, it's not long but it has some steepness to it.  Made it up okay, then waited for John at the turn onto Camino Santa Fe.  This road has some waviness to it, nothing too serious.  Over to Carroll Rd, turning left and using it to get to Miramar Rd.  From here, it was the normal way back to John's house.  I was feeling okay, kept up a decent pace on the generally flat sections and above 10 mph on the last little stretch up to the top of Pomerado Rd.  Home by following the same route in reverse, again able to keep up a decent, not great, pace.  Legs felt fine at the end.

Avg speed = 16.8 mph. Total mileage = 49 mi
Avg heartrate = 120 bpm
Total elevation gain = 2810'
