07-08-2026 Run/Swim

Slept fairly well, given how much caffeine I had the previous day. Got up and went for an early-morning fairly fast 5k run down by the park. I was a little over eight minutes in the first mile and had negative splits for the following two miles. Worked pretty hard on that last mile, I was huffing and puffing but got down around seven minutes.

Avg pace = 7:38/mi
Total distance = 3.16 mi
Elapsed moving time = 24:11
Avg heartrate = 139 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 19

Got home and had some cereal for breakfast before cleaning some of the dishes and getting ready for a swim at the WWC. Lots of people were there when it opened, but I had gotten to the gate first. Unfortunately, that didn't count with the folks who queued up to use the pool, which was frustrating. I ended up in lane 6, which is quite slow compared to the others for reasons I don't fully understand. It seems particularly slow in the outbound direction, more strokes needed to get to the end. I ended up doing two 500s, here are the slow splits: 9:42, 9:45. Far from my best effort. I did a little analysis and found that, on average, my pace in the outbound direction was 9% slower than my pace in the return direction. Howard was swimming in the lane next to me, and his freestyle stroke is so smooth; I am envious.

Avg pace = 1:57/100 yds (Video)
Total distance = 1000 yds
Elapsed moving time = 19:27 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 136 bpm (possibly)
Relative Effort = 13 (possibly)
SWOLF = 38
Avg stroke rate = 20 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.38 yds

Got home, continued laying out items I plan to take on the backpacking trip. I had some snacks while I watched a little TV before shaving, showering, and getting ready for my volunteer shift at the hospital. I ate lunch there, then saw Robert the tech and Mike the nurse for the first time in a long time. Also, I re-introduced myself to Angie, one of the facilities custodians who is very nice and helpful. Another nurse, Siena, was there, I introduced myself to her as well.
