03-04-2017 Ride

Ride from home with John, it was a little cool at the start but generally pleasant throughout the ride (not hot).  We headed down to W Bernardo Dr and then took a right on RB Rd to head out to Camino del Sur.  I was feeling okay, not super fast and still working on my cardio.  Over to Carmel Valley Rd, turning right and riding down to Rancho Santa Fe Farms Rd, where we also took a right.  We hadn't been this way on this road, and it has a short, fairly steep climbing section before it connects with Rancho Diegueno Rd, which we took to get to San Dieguito Rd.  Turned left and rode over to El Camino Real to get over to Via de la Valle.  From here, it was back up to Paseo Delicias / Del Dios Hwy.  John was slow on the climbs, but we rode together on the other sections.  The wind was in our faces as we climbed up the initial sections toward the dam, and I was really slow, a little back pain toward the top by the dam due to the exertion.  I was surprised to see that the water level was below the dam spillway, guessing that they had been releasing water from the dam in a controlled manner.  I was able to keep my speed above 10 mph on the second climbing section up to Via Rancho Pkwy.  Hooked up with John after the turn, then we headed back home the normal way from here.  I felt okay on the last climbs, a little slower than usual but no leg cramps.  Again, I could push at high output for awhile but couldn't sustain the high exertion for a long term.  Need to get out more frequently during the week for workouts.
