05-31-2020 Ride

Ride, while staying at our temporary housing in Pacific Highlands, over Carmel Valley Rd to the 56 bike trail, heading east to Rancho Penasquitos Blvd, turning right and staying on it onto Poway Rd, before turning right onto Sabre Springs Pkwy to get to Springhurst Dr and then up to John's house.  We met up and then rode up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy, turning right and heading down to Mercy Rd and then to Black Mountain Rd, taking a left here.  We rode up to Mira Mesa Blvd, turning right to get to Camino Ruiz and then to Calle Cristobal.  Over this road and then down the steep hill into Sorrento Valley, turning left onto Vista Sorrento Pkwy, staying on it until it connected with Mira Mesa Blvd, where we took a right and then a left onto Carroll Canyon Rd, which turns into Carroll Rd.  Eventually, this road tees into Miramar Rd, where we turned and headed back toward John's house, following the normal route up Pomerado Rd.  From there, I retraced my route back to the temporary apartment.  It turned out to be a longer day in the saddle than I had planned, but it was all good.  It was my first time riding in San Diego in quite a while, and I found myself struggling or going slow on the climbs.  Need time to get back into shape riding wavy routes.

05-28-2020 Ride

Ride from the apartment to pick up the rental car to haul our stuff to the airport.  Added some distance by heading out Ben Zvi and the 44 to the 412, turning left and riding over to the 461 to get to the 40.  Once I got over by the airport, I followed the signs to the old rental car center and picked up the car.  At the rental office, there were a couple of annoying people ahead of me, including a guy who, it turned out after a lot of haggling, had his credit card rejected and was unable to rent the car after all.  That's Israel.  It was a nice little final (for now) ride in Israel.

Avg speed = 15.8 mph. Total mileage = 13.8 mi

05-27-2020 Rides

Ride from work back to the apartment after dropping off my lease car.  I think it was my last day on the site in NZ, at least for now.  Normal way home, via the 412 to the 44 and Ben Zvi, then a straight shot to Shimon Ben Gamliel.

Avg speed = 15.6 mph. Total mileage = 12.2 mi

05-23-2020 Ride

Ride, from the normal starting spot by Oren's apartment in Netanya, with him, meeting up with Slavik and Rotem during the ride.  We rode over to the 57, this time staying on it as we headed east to the 5714, where we turned north, turning left onto the 5803 and riding to the 581, where we turned right and headed north and east to the 574 for a short stretch before turning left onto the 6403, which we used to get to the 65, taking it southwest to Hwy 4.  Headed back toward Netanya, looking in vain for an open coffee shop, two strikeouts until we found an open place by the 5711.  Sitting around with the guys one last time was pretty cool, although the whole coffee-getting experience during major COVID-19 awareness was a necessary bother.  From there, it was the normal way back to the starting point.  All in all, a good final ride (at least for now) with these good people.

05-22-2020 Ride

Not sure why there was a gap of about a month in my Blogger inputs for bike rides, so I am filling in the details as I can reconstruct.  This one was a ride, it looks like maybe I rode with Mark from his home.  Took Marzouk v Azar and Shalma Rd to Shlabim, then over to Ben Zvi.  Headed out to the 44 and then to the 40, heading north.  Over to the 461, turning left and getting to the 412 to ride back to the 44.  Retraced our route back to his place, then I rode home from there.  It looks, from my heartrate, like I was pushing myself.

Avg speed = 16.8 mph. Total mileage = 45.0 mi

05-16-2020 Ride

Ride with Oren from Netanya, with a start a little after 6:00 to try and avoid the heat.  Out to Hwy 4, but we stayed on it only until we got to the turnoff for the Ruppin Academic Center, the 5711.  It's a nice tree-lined road through residential area, and we stayed on it across the 57.  At some point, it turned into the 5613, which we took to the 562, another nice road heading south.  To the 553, heading west to Hwy 4 for a short stretch to get to the 551.  This took us to the turnoff to ride toward and through Bnei Zion, which we had ridden before.  Back onto the 551, where there were several other riders pushing the pace, causing us to increase our pace to try and match them.  Partially successful, as two of the riders got out ahead that I couldn't close the distance.  This road drops down to parallel Hwy 2, which we rode north to the EuroStop area for a coffee break.  It was starting to heat up by now, so after the break we headed back to the starting point, riding on Hwy 2 until the next exit, then taking surface streets to get back.  Felt pretty good on this ride, which wasn't too tough, moderate pace and no real elevation changes to speak of.

05-15-2020 Ride

Ride to and from work, via Ben Zvi and the 44 to the 412.  I carried my laptop with me, intending to print out a form but figuring out once I got there that I didn't need to after all.  So I had a coffee and then rode back home.  Pace throughout the ride was steady but not fast, it was starting to heat up and get humid by the time I was finished.

05-08-2020 Ride

Solo ride out Ben Zvi, with a short detour by the stadium on the way out, to the 44, taking it all the way to Hwy 3.  The temperature was ideal on the way out, starting to warm up a little bit when I was riding back.  A little bit of a tailwind on the way back, felt pretty good throughout this ride.  I rode for a short while with another guy who initially got out ahead of me as I crested the little rise coming back from Hwy 3.  I was able to catch up with him when there was a slight uphill, and then I hung with him until he turned off at the 40.  Legs felt tired but not sore afterward.

05-02-2020 Ride

Drove up to Netanya to meet Oren and his friend Uri for a ride starting from the normal spot.  Oren said we were going to ride at a slow pace, but that wasn't how I experienced it.  Out the normal way to Hwy 4, heading north to just beyond Hwy 9, where we met up with Rotem and the headed east on Hwy 9.  Out to the 581, where we headed north to the 574, then a short stretch to connect to the 6403.  We stopped by the group of stores next to the 65, but the Aroma was closed, so I had a Coke from the gas station there.  Onto the 65 and back toward Hadera, and before we got there Rotem peeled off toward home.  We took a route through the city of Hadera to get back to Hwy 4.  I was concerned that we would have to deal with a steady headwind on the way back, but it was more of a crosswind and wasn't such a big deal.  Still, we were slower, for me because I'm out of shape from not riding.  Normal way back to the starting point, it was slow going up the tiny little grade to the 57, so I have work to do to get my cardio and legs back in shape.  I felt fine at the end, just tired from the exercise.

05-01-2020 Ride

First ride in about a month, spending my days mostly at home, including working from home.  I have been getting my 10000 steps every day starting on March 25.  It seems like it's been a much longer time than a month since I rode.

On this day, I rode over to Mark Cook's place, and we rode the bike trail and surface streets all the way down to Rishon LeTsiyon West, where we headed east to Sderot Maryland, turning here and riding down it until we came to a security gate.  Turned around, then rode by the amusement park and Haberfeld Stadium.  The road was under construction, and we had to ride for about 30 m through loose sand and gravel before getting back onto the feeder road, which led us to the 4311.  We headed toward Palmahim, but I proposed turning around a couple of miles in, since I was concerned about running out of gas.  On the way back, Mark got out ahead of me, riding with another guy who was faster than me.  I couldn't keep up, so I kept my pace and eventually Mark stopped and waited for me.  We kept on Sderat Tashah into Rishon, turning onto the 412 and riding through downtown, connecting to the 44.  The wind helped generally on the way back, and I could feel some tightness in my legs, so I was glad for the assistance.  Made it back okay to Mark's place, it was just the right distance and effort for my first ride after the layoff.

Later, Ann and I rode over to Levinsky Market to walk around while there was an open house in the apartment.  We ate out for the first time in quite a while for me, then we rode the long way over to the Tel Aviv marina by Gordon Pool to see the sailboats, then home.
