04-30-2014 Ride

Posted this long afterwards.  Ride after work. where I headed out Bernardo Center Dr to Carmel Valley Rd, staying on it all the way until it dead-ended at the 56.  Then I took the 56 bike path back to Black Mountain Rd, turning left there and riding back to Carmel Valley Rd, where I turned right.  Up and over the crest, then down to Dove Canyon Rd, where I turned left and took it over to RB Rd.  Back to campus using Via del Campo.

04-30-0214 Ride

Ride in the late afternoon from work.  It was still pretty warm, but the breeze didn't seem to be as bad as the previous day.  Headed out Bernardo Center Dr to Carmel Valley Rd, doing better than the previous day and not really feeling like I was riding into the wind (I was).  Rode all the way to the 56 bike trail, even though I had originally intended to turn off at Del Mar Heights Blvd.  The ride on the bike trail was good, I started well and had the benefit of a tailwind.  But my fitness isn't top-notch, so I couldn't sustain the initial pace on either of the two small upslopes before Camino del Sur.  Still, I felt okay about my effort here.  I kept on the bike trail all the way to Black Mountain Rd.  The little climbing section had the same result, good start but not enough endurance to keep up a strong pace all the way through.  Back to Carmel Valley Rd, where it was again slow after the turn before the road tilted down and gave me a break.  Crossed over to RB Rd via Dove Canyon Rd, and it was slow going up this last little incline.  Back to work the normal way.  The start of this ride felt good, but I could feel myself slowing down after about 15 mi.  More work to do to get back into good cycling shape.

04-29-2014 Ride

Ride to yoga after missing a weekend of riding (camping up by Lake Cuyamaca).  It was hot with Santa Ana winds that I had to generally ride into.  I had also donated blood on the previous Wednesday, and I've found that it takes me awhile to recover my endurance after doing this.  All of that contributed to a slow ride for me.  I took the normal BVP route.  Felt fine, just slow with no real push in my legs or ability to sustain a high level of effort.  It was fun riding into Escondido after turning off BVP because the wind was at my back and really brisk.

04-22-2014 Ride

Ride to yoga, steady pace, intending to stop at See's Candies and get a gift for Dorie.  Headed over the pedestrian bridge, since I'd left early.  Wind was generally favorable, so I made good time.  I forgot to start up MapMyRide.  Headed over normal BVP route, turning off Grand Ave at Cedar St to go to See's, which was already closed, so no luck there.  On to church for yoga.

04-19-2014 Ride

Ride with John, leaving a little before 7:00 from my house and heading over into Escondido via the pedestrian bridge.  We then took BVP and followed the normal longer way to church, although on Ash St I turned left on 3rd Ave to avoid having to trigger the light at Grand Ave.  At the first stop sign, we turned right to get over to Grand Ave, which we followed down to Kalmia St, then over to church.  After a short wait, we met up with Andy and headed back over to Grand Ave and out to BVP.  Out to Valley Pkwy, which we took to Lake Wohlford Rd.  I started a little slow up the grade, with Andy out ahead.  Set a steady pace and gradually was able to pass him.  He sat on my wheel for much of the climb but couldn't hang on at the last little climbing section before we got to that road that turns off to the right.  We all gathered back up at the top and rode together around the lake.  On the short, steep section before the turn onto Woods Valley Rd, I pushed it into high gear and had a good spurt to get some separation.  We all rode together down into Valley Center, having to stop for a bit while John fixed a rear flat.  Up and down Valley Center Rd back into Escondido.  I was able to stay with John but only by pedaling hard to keep him from coasting away.  We took Valley Pkwy to Citrus Ave and over to BVP to get back to Grand Ave.  Took it through downtown, and we separated at Centre City Pkwy, with me and John heading back to my house the normal way.  Good steady pace on the way back, and John was able to keep pace, other than a little lagging as we rode across the freeway.  Felt fine on the last little climbs, as this was a short ride for me given my recent Saturday routes.

04-16-2014 Rides

Stationary bike ride in the morning before work.  It had been awhile, so I rode at level 13 for an hour.  Watched an episode of The Office in the first half, so it was slower than the second half, where I was basically focused on output.

Total mileage = 22.1 mi
Avg heartrate = 154 bpm
Total calories burned = 775

In the evening, I rode over to church for music practice in preparation for the Easter Sunrise Service.  I was a little tired from the morning and not too motivated to ride fast, so it was a moderate workout.  I took the normal longer route via BVP.  The tailwind on BVP was helpful, and I felt it coming into Escondido from the east.

04-13-2014 Ride

Time trial ride with John.  We started off fairly slow after the heavy workout on the previous day.  But John picked up the pace after we passed the hospital on Pomerado Rd, and we rode fairly fast around the turn onto Poway Rd.  I took it easy going up Sabre Springs Pkwy and Rancho Carmel Dr, then we sped up for the rest of the way.  Finished in 59:19.

04-12-2014 Ride

Ride over to John's house, taking the normal route over to Pomerado Rd and from there to his place.  I kept the pace steady but not fast and had a pretty good initial ride up the little hill near his house.  Slowed down about 4/5 of the way to the turn, but it was still a pretty good climb.  We headed over to Scripps-Poway Pkwy and up to the 67.  It had been a while since I'd ridden on this road.  I kept my pace above 8 mph for the last climb and felt pretty solid at the top.  We rode down toward Lakeside, fast on the downhill, then turning onto Vigilante Rd and Moreno Ave.  On the flats here, John and I traded leads and kept up a good pace.  We turned on Willow Rd and took it over to Wildcat Canyon Rd.  I hadn't ridden up this climb in a long time, but I didn't feel as sore in my lower back as the last time.  We only went up to Muth Valley Rd, turning left here and having to tackle a fairly steep grade for about a mile.  We took this road until it ended, then turned around and retraced our route.  Again, I felt comparatively good on the 67 climb, not really needing to get out of the saddle much on the first steep section and keeping it above 10 mph on the second section.  Then it was back to John's house for a quick soda and a steady-paced ride back home.  My legs felt in good shape, no real soreness from the ride, just tiredness.

04-08-2014 Ride

Ride over to yoga, with a tailwind helping out.  The weather was warm but not hot, pretty close to ideal for riding.  I couldn't find the motivation to ride hard up the little incline before the 78, but my pace was generally steady.  The ride helped loosen me up for the yoga practice.

04-05-2014 Ride

Solo ride in the morning over to church, taking the longer yoga route.  I knew I was going to ride hard with Andy, so I left early and took a leisurely pace, not really pushing it.  Made it over there in about 40 min.  I waited awhile, then Andy showed up.  We decided to ride out the 78 to Bandy Canyon Rd and take on part of Highland Valley Rd.  Headed out Juniper St to 17th St, stretching it out on this short, steep climb.  On the flats, Andy was really strong, that must be his triathlete conditioning.  We headed out the 78 to San Pasqual Rd, heading over to Old Milky Way.  I was working hard on the flat sections to keep up with him.  I could gain back some distance when the road tilted up, even a little.  Out to Bandy Canyon Rd, riding together at a good clip.  On the climb up, we rode together.  He was out a little bit in front, but I had a little kick left at the end.  We headed over to Highland Valley Rd and up to the top, past Eagle's Crest Rd at the normal resting spot.  I felt okay on the climbs, just slow but still fast enough to lead out on the steeper sections.  On the downhill riding back, I was really careful, since it was the first time I had come down this road since I crashed in August of 2012.  All went fine, and I was taking the turns pretty well, keeping my weight back and leaning in a little bit.  We headed over to Pomerado Rd, then over the freeway to BVP.  Andy really let it out crossing the freeway, and I was working hard to hang on his wheel.  Back to Sunset Dr, then Juniper St back to the church.  Then I headed home the short way via Centre City Pkwy, riding steady but not really driving a hard pace.  Good strength left for the last two little climbs, and my legs felt just fine at the end.  I think I gave my cardio a bigger workout than my legs on this ride.
