05-31-2021 Ride

Ride with Jim and John, third day in a row.  I took the Azucar route up to Jim's house to meet up with them, then we headed via the time trial route over to RB Rd and followed the old time trial route up to Poway Rd.  I was feeling it in my legs and didn't push the pace.  John and Jim were also slower, particularly John.  We took Poway Rd down to Rancho Penasquitos Blvd and up to the 56 bike trail.  Then it was down to Camino del Sur and back home the normal way from there, using RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr.  I stopped at the Ace hardware store to get a plug for the fountain pump in the back yard.  We also had smoothies at Jim's house.

05-30-2021 Ride

Time trial ride with John and Jim, slower because of the bigger workout the previous day.  I pushed the pace a little bit but not too much.  Finished in 1:03, which included hitting both of the lights at the freeway and RB Rd.

05-29-2021 Ride

Solo ride over to John's house, pushing the pace only on the climbs at the beginning and end.  Jim met us there, and we headed up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy and then down to Mercy Rd, to get to Black Mountain Rd and up to Mira Mesa Blvd. I was riding a little faster, and I kept up the pace to Camino Ruiz and then Calle Cristobal.  Not scorching but not letting up much.  Down to Sorrento Valley, right on Vista Sorrento Pkwy and up to Carmel Mountain Rd.  We rode over to El Camino Real, and I took a steady pace up to the top and then down to San Dieguito Rd.  To El Apajo and Via de Santa Fe to get to Via de la Valle.  I kept it above 10 mph on the minor climb up to Paseo Delicias.  We had something of a tailwind going up Del Dios Hwy, and it helped me up past the dam, then I couldn't keep it above 10 mph any more.  We gathered at the top of that climb, and Jim was complaining about cramps in his quads.  Above 10 mph on the climb up to Via Rancho Pkwy, then I dialed back my pace a little bit.  Over Lake Hodges on the freeway, and I waited for the others at the turn onto Pomerado Rd.  Jim was feeling it more by this time, and as we headed up the road he really slowed down.  He decided to wait at Albertson's while I rode with John back to his house, using the normal route, to pick up his truck and come get him.  On that last stretch after we dropped Jim off, I was slow and John and I traded leads to keep it going.  Pretty slow on that last climb but no cramping.  This was the longest ride I've done since coming back to San Diego.  Felt fine but overall slow, was tired later.  We had lunch with Ed and Susan Hume in Escondido, and it was a nice conversation.

05-27-2021 Ride

Ride after work, with a hectic last-minute meeting to deal with that caused me to be late for the start.  Justin, Blair, and Robert joined.  Met out in front of B65, then headed down W Bernardo Dr and over to Pomerado Rd.  As the road tilted up, Justin slowed down and I stayed generally with him.  We got to Paseo Verano and turned left, finding a short steep section that I powered through, along with Robert, while Justin and Blair came up after Justin adjusted his seat post.  All the way on this road until it crossed Pomerado again, and we continued straight, heading up to the RB Inn and connecting to Bernardo Oaks Dr.  Justin was doing okay here, we were all riding together.  After we crossed RB Rd, Robert and I got a little bit ahead of the others as we rode up to Lomica Dr.  We didn't see them coming, so I went looking for them toward Pomerado Rd but found out that Justin was having back trouble and was ready to head back to the car.  Robert and I connected back with them, riding to Bernardo Center Dr and then up to the back parking lot.  I pushed the pace a little bit on the climb up to the parking lot turnoff, and Robert stayed with me pretty much.  He is going to be a good rider, at least in this short rides.

05-22-2021 Ride

Ride from home with John, heading over to Highland Valley Rd and up.  It was as challenging as usual, those three steep sections.  We rode out to the 67 and headed south to Archie Moore Rd to get back to Highland Valley Rd.  This route didn't as as much distance as I thought it would, in fact, it's probably about the same distance as if we had turned around at the 67.  I was slower than I would have liked on the littler climbs on the way back, but the downhills were fast and fun.  Tired later in the day, with tired but not sore legs.

05-20-2021 Ride

Ride after work from home with Blair Butler.  We headed down past the park and up Pomerado Rd to Camino del Norte.  Blair was keeping a good pace for most of it, just dropping back when the climbs were a little longer.  Stayed on Camino del Norte all the way to RB Rd, then we turned and rode back toward home, through the neighborhood.  It was a good evening for a ride, and we enjoyed a beer and conversation afterward.

05-09-2021 Ride

Time trial ride with John from home, Jim is back in Texas.  I ended up just missing breaking the hour mark, by 3 sec.  Several stretches were faster than normal, including the little climb up over the freeway and the downhill stretch to Poway Rd.  Other than that, it was just my normal effort pushed a little farther.  Finished in 1:00:03

05-08-2021 Ride

Solo ride over to John's house, taking the normal route using W Bernardo Dr to RB Rd.  I took it slow on the way over, including really slow on the climb up to his place (turning onto Alpine Dr).  We headed up to the top of Pomerado Rd, and I also took it quite slow on this climb, trying not to get too far ahead of him.  We rode down to Kearny Villa Rd, with John getting pretty far ahead of me until I put in a bigger effort to catch up with him.  Then we traded leads, staying on Ruffin Rd until we turned right onto Aero Dr, riding to get to Sandrock Rd, turning left and then right onto Murray Ridge Rd.  Then we turned right onto Mission Center Rd, taking this nice, fast downhill down to Friars Rd, where we turned right again and rode over the 163, turning right onto Ulric St, which is a nice gradual climb back out of Mission Valley.  Up to Linda Vista Rd, turning right again.  I was starting to slow down a little bit here.  We rode through Linda Vista, then turned right onto Aero Dr and then left onto Kearny Villa Rd.  From there, we took the normal route back to John's house.  I felt okay on the flats but slower than usual on the gradual climb up Pomerado Rd and quite slow near the top.  Had a smoothie at John's place before retracing my route back home.  Actually, I had a pretty good return ride, aided perhaps by something of a tailwind.  Legs were pretty sore and tired later, and I was also more worn out than usual.  Still, a better ride than I expected, feeling some of the effects of having had my second vaccine shot on Wednesday.

05-02-2021 Ride

Time trial route with Jim and John.  I had fixed a front flat tire the previous evening and replaced my brake pads, which were pretty well worn out.  Not much strength in my legs from the previous three days, so I kept it pretty chill, hanging with the others.  John was a little off his normal pace, and Jim was riding slightly faster.  Finished in 1:03:20.  Fast up that little rise just before turning onto Sabre Springs Pkwy, other than that it was unremarkable.

Avg speed = 16.9 mph. Total mileage = 17.8 mi

05-01-2021 Ride

Solo ride over through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd and then to RB Rd.  I was running behind schedule, so I pushed the pace more than usual.  Down to Bernardo Center Dr and then a left onto Bernardo Heights Pkwy.  Was able to keep it above 10 mph on this gradual climb, but my legs were feeling it from the previous afternoon ride.  Right on Paseo Lucido, staying on Carmel Mountain Rd down to Rancho Carmel Dr, turning right and riding down to the Sabre Springs Transit Center.  Met up with John, Jim, and Blair, and we headed over to the 56 bike trail.  Blair had just gotten a new wheelset, and he was in good form for this ride.  We stayed on the bike path all the way down to El Camino Real, turning right and riding up the gradual climb to Del Mar Heights Rd.  We rode past a guy riding a new tricked-out Specialized bike, and we ended up passing him several times as Blair and I waited for John and Jim at certain points.  Down to San Dieguito Rd and then up the Three Witches climb to Camino del Sur.  I did okay on the first climb but had to slow down on the last two, just no push in my legs to keep it above 10 mph.  Gathered back together, Jim was having a low-energy day.  Stayed on Camino del Sur and Camino del Norte to Carmel Mountain Rd.  I had noticed my front tire pressure was low, but I was able to keep going and make it to the end.  We reversed the time trial route back to the Transit Station, and I caught a ride back home with Jim, was glad I didn't have to ride those final 7 miles.
