02-26-2023 Ride

Solo ride on a Sunday afternoon, after getting rained out of riding on Saturday.  Headed down by the park, started my Wahoo a little late, then over Highland Valley Rd, which has been repaved all the way to the start of the climb.  There was some standing water in the road on the way up and back.  I headed up the first little section and turned around a little after the first sharp turn in the road.  Then it was back to Pomerado Rd and up towards Poway Rd.  The wind was swirling, but I felt reasonably strong on this day and kept up a decent pace.  Past RB Rd, I followed the time trial route, not trying to kill it with pace but keeping it steady.  Day was nice, a little blustery but pretty clouds.

02-20-2023 Ride

Solo ride on Presidents' Day, nobody else was interested in going.  I switched out my front wheel for my Reynolds wheel and tested the wobble effect I've been experiencing.  Headed out by the park and over the freeway to Via Rancho Pkwy, taking that short little climb (always a challenge, it was particularly at the beginning) and heading over to Del Dios Hwy.  Was a nice day, low 40s at the start but warmed up into the low 60s by the end of the ride.  Down into Rancho Santa Fe, no wobble on the curving downhill drop by the Lake Hodges dam.  Continued on Linea del Cielo through the ritzy neighborhood until the road changed its name to Lomas Santa Fe Dr.  Then it was down to the coast, where I took a quick break by the ocean before heading south on the Coast Hwy to Via de la Valle.  I think the wind was generally coming from the NW, so helped on the next section.  Up to El Camino Real and then over to San Dieguito Rd, where I was slower than usual due to the lack of trading leads with others.  Rode up Three Witches at modest pace, legs still feeling it from Saturday's ride and no need to set any records.  Left on Camino del Sur, then a right onto Paseo del Sur, taking it through the Del Sur neighborhood and crossing over at Four Gee Rd to ride to the top before turning around and following my extended route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood, up by the water tank but not taking that turn, coming back Alva Rd to RB Rd.  Left there and then down to W Bernardo Dr, heading home via Duenda Rd and Aguamiel Rd, with a little jaunt on Creciente Way to make sure I ended up over 40 miles for the day.  Felt great at the end, no soreness or tiredness in legs to speak of.

02-18-2023 Ride

Well, no easy ride for Bisikleta on the Saturday after the Palm Springs Century.  Zac originally suggested Double Peak, but it was, thankfully, voted down.  Instead, we rode to Mt Soledad and back.  It was 38 deg at the house when I left, but by the time I got to the 4S Target it was 46 deg.  I rode over to the starting point through the neighborhood and then through the 4S Ranch neighborhood, continuing up Alva Rd and by the turnoff to the water tower before heading down like I've done before.  On this ride, there were a reduced number of souls: Ray, Robert, Kamal, Jamil, Jed, Zac, Charlie, and Nel.  We headed down Camino del Sur to the 56 bike path, and after the Carmel Valley Rd light Jed and Ray took off and I didn't answer.  I thought it was going to be one of those days.  We took the 56 bike path down to El Camino Real, turning left there and heading up to Carmel Mountain Rd, turning right and then left onto Vista Sorrento Pkwy.  I was able to catch up with Rob and Ray at the front and stay with them.  Down to Sorrento Valley Blvd, turning right and then getting onto the bike path running parallel to I-5.  Jed and I rode to the top together on the first segment, then Rob and I trailed on the second segment after he had to put his chain back on.  Right onto Gilman Dr, taking it through UCSD campus and down to the Rose Canyon Bike Path, which is really nice in its new sections and too sketchy and narrow in its old sections.  Down to the end of the path, turning left onto the bike path for N Mission Bay Dr, which has a nice little bridge over Rose Inlet.  Onto Pacific Beach Dr, turning left onto Crown Point Dr and riding over to Mission Bay Park and a rest stop by restrooms.  Then we retraced our route back to Pacific Beach Dr, turning right and then left onto Olney St.  Right from there onto Balboa Ave and over to Soledad Mountain Rd for the climb up.  At this point Zac just took off, and there was no way I could match his pace.  I kept it going steady at the start, but Jed caught up and passed me, leaving me in the dust.  On the little steeper sections I stood up and powered up them, recovering on the flatter portions, and that approach seemed to work okay.  Ended up setting a Strava PR on this segment, 18:32, and I was third up to the cross.  After a breather we headed down La Jolla Scenic Dr to Nautilus Rd, turning right.  I was cautious on the steeper turning sections here, feeling a little wobble when I gripped the handlebars too tightly.  All the way down to Neptune Pl, where Zac and I were out ahead and lost contact with the others.  Jamil and Kamal caught up but not the others, so we headed through the city streets to get to La Jolla village.  Then it was Prospect St up to Torrey Pines Rd and down to La Jolla Shores Dr.  We stopped for the last break at a gas station on the corner, then rode up that short (1 mi) steep climb to get to N Torrey Pines Rd.  I was able to hang with Zac, and we outpaced the others on the climb, surprisingly.  A Strava PR for me here as well, 6:36.  Before the descent down to the sea I caught a rock fragment in my rear tire and had a flat, but I was able to fix it pretty quickly.  We continued down the descent (again some wobble at a fast curving section), had to slow down a little bit and then work hard to catch back up with the others.  Onto Carmel Valley Rd, where it was Zac and me again out front, he was pushing hard to get back since he was late for meeting somebody.  We rode together over El Camino Real to the 56 bike path, then I waited for the others while he continued on.  We retraced our route back.  On the bike path section after Carmel Valley Rd, Ray, Nel and I traded leads for a while until Jed caught up and blew apart our little pace line.  We tried to hold it together but Jed was strong, so he and I ended up riding together to Camino del Sur, with me putting in a big effort to stay with him.  On the way back from there, I was in the lead for a while until Jed and Ray caught up and we traded leads for a time until Ray had to back off.  I lasted a little longer until I couldn't match Jed's pace, then I fell back on the climbing sections.  Once it flattened out, I was able to close some but not all of the distance.  He is super strong, very difficult to keep up with on long steady climbs.  He and I finished at the same time when I caught up with him at a light.  This was a good riding day for me, I felt strong throughout.  At one point, my right quad twinged a little but nothing came of it. Rode home down RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr and home the normal way from there.  Legs were tired but not too sore at the end.

02-12-2023 Ride

Solo recovery ride on the day after the Tour de Palm Springs Century.  I headed through the neighborhood of the AirBnB we were staying (on Bob O Link Ln in SE Palm Springs) to Gene Autry Tr and headed north.  The wind was definitely more brisk than the day before, and it appeared to be coming from the WNW.  So it was a chore on this initial section, which had a very mild uphill grade.  Turned left onto Visa Chino, and it seemed like I was riding directly into a 20 mph wind, with a continuing mild uphill grade.  This was definitely a tough stretch until I got closer to downtown Palm Springs, where the wind wasn't so bad.  I rode to the end of that road and turned left onto Via Monte Vista, which was thankfully out of the wind and downhill.  I was trying to see how far up into the hills I could ride, so I turned right onto Camino Sur, getting over to Rose Ave and heading south to Crescent Dr and taking neighborhood streets to get to Alejo Rd and then right onto Belardo Rd.  I stayed on this road until it dropped me onto Palm Canyon Dr.  Back toward the AirBnB, doing a little loop near the end to get up to a total of 15 mi.

2023 Tour de Palm Springs Century

Ann and I drove in on Friday afternoon and stayed at an AirBnB in SE Palm Springs with Andy and Roya, Charlie and Leslie, and Rob.  We went downtown on Friday evening to pick up my registration and see the vendors, but they were starting to shut down.  I did buy a T-shirt, it turns out this was the 25th Tour.  On the morning of the ride, we left a little before 6:00 and got near the starting line around 6:15, Ann dropped me and Rob off, and Leslie dropped Charlie off.  We connected up with the other riders closer to the starting line.  From Bisikleta, the following riders rode the century route: Ray, Perse, Arnold, Gideon (more on this later), Fritz, Gio, Jhonar, Charlie, Eric, Rob, Kamal, and Jamil.  Another rider, Jerry, from LA rode with us, and he ended up being a strong rider indeed.  Thankfully, the wind wasn't blowing as fiercely as in previous years.  We headed out Indian Canyon Dr, turning left onto Garnet Ave.  It was a mild grade heading out of town and the grade picked up after the turn.  Crossed over the freeway on Wall Rd and turned left onto 20th Ave. The road quality in this part of the ride was not so great.  Up Worsely Rd to the first water stop at mile 10 before continuing on. This stretch was a pretty steady climb up to the turn onto Indian Canyon Dr, where we waited for everybody to catch up.  On the climb, I couldn't keep up with Jerry and Jed, who got way out in front.  I was leading the others, a pack of whom caught up with me near the turn.  Down to Mission Lakes Blvd, where we had our first food stop around mile 20.  This stretch was downhill, and the downhill continued on Little Morongo Rd and then on Dillon Rd before it started climbing again.  This began a section with rolling hills that was the first challenging portion of the ride.  I was trying to stay near the front and take the lead, and it was a workout.  The Dillon Rd section continued until mile 50, and it was generally downhill (nice and fast) from mile 42 on.  Right before the downhill, Gideon got a flat, then another, and, after I rode back to where he was, yet another one.  At that point, he ended up getting sagged to the lunch stop after we let a support vehicle know he needed a lift.  After the downhill, we took a right turn onto Ave 44, then over to Indio Springs Dr via Golf Ctr Pkwy.  Lunch stop was at mile 54.  I should mention that each of the food stops had high school musicians playing and a lot of good food choices, including Cold Stone ice cream at the lunch stop and bananas throughout, as well as PB&J.  After the break, where I put more sunscreen on, we rode back over to Dillon Rd via Vista del Norte, then got onto Ave 48 for a short stretch before turning onto Van Buren St.  I almost missed this turn but corrected.  Got to mile 60 okay but the next 20 miles were tough for me, as others were feeling good and riding fast and I was trying to hang with them.  Jhonar was putting in bursts of speed and then slowing down, and it wasn't helping so much.  Others in this group included Ray, Gideon, Perse, Arnold, and I think Rob and Gio were there as well.  Turn on Ave 54 and then another one on Harrison St.  Down to Ave 58, turning right there and heading west.  By this time, the wind was more noticeable, and while it swirled, I seemed to notice it most when we were riding west, a little less when we were riding north.  Headed back north on Madison St.  It was around this point that I think we missed a turn that would have taken us to the next food stop.  We kept going, turning left on Ave 48 and then right on Dune Palms Rd.  Just before the 111 crossing, we stopped at a convenience store for people to pee and get some food and water.  I was okay, still suffering but not as much as earlier.  Continued on, turning left on Fred Waring Dr and riding past our supposed next turn.  So we backtracked to Warner Trail and took it to Hovely Ln, turning left and then right onto Oasis Club Dr.  Turned into Tamarisk Row Dr and then into Frank Sinatra Dr, before we turned right onto Gerald Ford Dr, which wound around until the last food stop,  which was supposed to be past mile 90.  For us, it was at mile 86, so we were bummed out.  At this stop, they had ice cold electrolyte drink, and it was excellent, really helped me, I think, to finish off the ride strong.  Continued on until turning right onto Da Vall Dr, followed by a left onto Dinah Shore Dr, which eventually turned into Mesquite Ave.  Right turn onto El Cielo Rd, then a left onto Baristo Rd, getting close to the end.  Over to Tahquitz Canyon Way via Avenida Caballeros, and the finish line was there, with lots of people cheering us on at the end.  A turn after to pick up our participation medal, then a round of congratulations for everybody who finished.  However, Rob, Charlie, and I were at mile 97, and they had come to Palm Springs to ride a century, so we ended up riding back to the AirBnB, about 5 miles.  Pretty straight shot back via Indian Canyon Dr and Palm Canyon Dr, and thankfully, it was generally slightly downhill and not into the wind, so not too bad.  During the day, I ended up being one of the main drivers of the pace, along with Jed and Jerry.  Both of them needed to be periodically reminded that their pace was too hot for everybody (including me) to keep up, and they did a good job setting the pace and being out in front.  I went into the pool after the ride, and my legs were a little crampy, particularly my toes.  Was a big exertion day for me, so no surprise there.

02-05-2023 Ride

Solo ride initially on a day where my legs were still tired and a little sore from the previous day.  Through the neighborhood up to RB Rd, then over to Alva Rd to ride up to the water tower.  Then down through the 4S Ranch neighborhood and over to Four Gee Rd to get to Camino del Sur.  Straightforward from here, heading down to Paseo del Sur, turning left there, and riding back to Four Gee Rd.  Back through the 4S Ranch neighborhood, this time the normal way, then took RB Rd back to my neighborhood to get over to Jim's house.  I met up with him, Dave, and John, and we rode the time trial route together for the first time in quite a while.  I did okay on that section, not scorching it but putting in a good effort a couple of times, albeit while feeling it in my legs.

02-04-2023 Ride

Solo ride over to Gideon's house to meet him and head over to the 4S Target, taking the route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood.  It was his first time riding with the group in a while, and it was good to have him back.  On this ride, which was the last warm-up for the Palm Springs Century next Saturday, were:  Ray, Gideon, Robert, Perse, Jed, Fritz, Charlie, Eric, Robert (Fritz's friend with the electric-assist bike), Darnell, Nel, and Kamal.  We headed down Camino del Sur to San Dieguito Rd and then down Three Witches, where the road has been fully repaved is really nice now.  It was cold on that descent, but the weather was generally good on this ride.  Once we got onto the flats, we practiced our pace line and actually did pretty well on this stretch.  Then it was over El Camino Real to Via de la Valle and down to Coast Hwy.  We headed north and tried, with some limited success, to stay in an organized line and save energy by drafting.  Ray and Fritz's friend Robert turned back at La Costa Ave while the rest of us continued on.  Headed all the way up to Carlsbad and the Starbucks there for our first break.  I was able to keep with the group and provide more than my share of being out in front or near to it.  Then we headed back the same way to Leucadia, again trying to stay in pace line, including a rotating line where you come off the front as soon as you get there.  Not everybody was in sync with the strategy.  Stopped at Cancun for our second break, and then rode back into Del Mar.  I couldn't keep up with Jed and Fritz on the little climb into the village, a portent of my fitness level on this ride.  Over to Carmel Valley Rd, turning left and getting to the 56 bike path via El Camino Real.  We stayed generally together although not in pace line until we got to Carmel Valley Rd.  From there, a group of us kept a pace line going but it was hard on me, even though the pace was comparatively slow.  Back to Camino del Sur.  Around this time, the backs of my legs were starting to complain but not a lot.  On the climbs back to the starting point, I couldn't really keep up any pace, and it was made worse by not being able to find the right low gear to pedal in.  Back to the start, trailing a number of others whom I couldn't keep up with.  After a short break, Gideon and I rode back, and I took the neighborhood route, ready for this ride to be done.  Legs ended up okay, just tired and not a lot of drive in them in the latter half of the ride.

02-03-2023 Virtual Ride

Ride in the garage before work on a Friday morning.  I rode for an hour and was really sweating.  Indoor workouts are a chore.  I was able to set up the Wahoo so I could adjust resistance level, and I rode most of it at the 20% level, which was enough for me.  I got the Roku setup to work with the monitor and my wireless earbuds, so that was cool.

Avg speed = 18.2 mph (Probably higher, I think the clock was running while I was adjusting my derailleur)
Total mileage = 18.3 mi
