Got up really early, I had had a nap the previous day. So I got ready for a bike ride. Joe had indicated he was riding with Mike from Oceanside on Mike's birthday, so I decided to join them. Loaded up my bike, gear, and snacks/water into the car and drove to Mike's apartment in Oceanside, where I got my stuff ready and rode over to where Joe had parked (he and Cathie both just got new Mazda CX-50 SUVs in a lease deal). As Joe was finally ready, Mike rolled up with his buddy Lewis Wearne, who apparently is also a fitness coach and instructor (nice guy, he's also into bikepacking). We headed from his place into downtown Oceanside and eventually to a path along the coast, before we turned a block inland and rode by Jed's house. We followed the general route that I've taken before over to PCH, getting on just by Angelo's Burgers. Mike and I rode in front for much of the time, and there was one stretch where I put my head down and rode out ahead solo for a while. We gathered up a couple of times, including just before Cancun and at the base of the climb up Torrey Pines. Made a restroom stop there, then we headed up the climb, Mike trailing back. I kept a decent pace, trying to stay above 10 mph the whole way and being mostly successful. Another gathering point at the top, then Joe and I turned around while Mike and Louis continued on their quest to ride a century. We largely retraced our route, staying on PCH and making pretty good time until we got into Encinitas. I told Joe to stay on my wheel and let me know when I was going too fast. He would drop back when there was any uphill grade, and there was only so much slowing I could do. We got through Leucadia and on the way to Carlsbad when he told me that his legs were starting to complain. So we slowed down some more and made it through this town. Slower still as we rode into Oceanside, then we were really casual in our pace through this town. We took the route by Jed's house again and then continued on this road as it took us past the harbor. There was a very short steep section that we had to climb to get to the Del Taco on Harbor Dr. We turned back onto PCH and rode back to the road that would take us to where our cars were parked. Joe was in survival mode by this time, so I dialed my speed back and waited at the turns to make sure he saw me. A couple of passes up and down Mike's street to get us both to 50 miles. I had to pee pretty fiercely, and I thought I would stop on the way home.
Avg speed = 15.3 mph. Total mileage = 50.0 mi
Avg power = 113 W. Weighted avg power = 148 W
Total elevation gain = 1700'
Avg heartrate = 112 bpm (Coospo), 112 bpm (Fitbit)
Loaded up my bike and the need-to-pee sensation subsided as soon as I sat in the car, so I drove home without stopping. Got home, had a shower, then I headed over to meet Bor-Jiunn at HP. We walked over to Tandoori Express and had lunch, decent but not as good as previous times (I think the portions were a little smaller). He told me that Guang Jin is moving to Boise to work on LEP for HP Indigo, which was something of a shock to me. I hope it all works out well. Michele is working for an analytical contract lab doing SEM and surface analysis for the semiconductor industry in the Bay Area. We are both a little pessimistic about the long-term prospects of the new HP SD site. He's hoping that there will be another EER within the next couple of years. After lunch we walked back and I rode home for a quiet afternoon, including a nap. Ann let me know she was running a fever and had a scratchy throat, so I went to CVS and got some COVID tests for her (first one was negative).
