01-30-2013 Ride

Solo ride just after lunch on a pretty nice day.  The wind seemed to be swirling and working against me more often than not.  Normal loop with extension to Poway Rd.  I'm still not able to charge up the little hill after turning on Camino del Norte, but I was steady in my pace.

01-21-2013 Ride

Solo ride from home on MLK day. It took me a while to get motivated to get out on the bike, and I wasn't sure how far I was going to ride.  Headed over the freeway to BVP and up to Sunset Dr. This little climb wasn't all that tough. Got over to Centre City Pkwy via Felicita and headed to Mission Rd.  Over to Barham Dr and through the neighborhood route to San Marcos Blvd.  Then I headed all the way down to the coast on Palomar Airport Rd. I was facing a little headwind here. Got onto PCH and made good time. It was sunny and nice here, and lots of people were hanging out by the beach. I turned inland at Via de la Valle and made my way to El Camino Real. Looped around San Dieguito Rd and up to Camino del Sur. I made decent time on this climb, and I headed over to Carmel Valley Rd to get more miles in. The climb here was steady, not too fast. Headed home via Dove Canyon Dr to RB Red, which I took down to W Bernardo Dr. Home the normal way. Felt good when I finished.

01-20-2013 Ride

Ride over to Dave's house for the time trial route with John.  Temperature was similar to the previous day, but it didn't feel as cold on the ride.  I kept my pace down, knowing I was planning on riding on Monday.  So I stayed pretty much with John the whole way, only getting a little bit ahead on the climb up to Poway Rd.  Here, I was taking it slow.  The only place where I pushed the pace was on the flat sections on Poway Rd, where John and I traded leads and we were riding pretty fast.  I hiked it up that last little hill before the turn onto Sabre Springs Pkwy, then slowed down for John.  We rode up to Ted Williams Pkwy, and I was just a little ahead of him.  Similar thing after the turn, and we rode together for the rest of the time.  I was a little ahead of him by the hospital but not much.  He took the lead going downhill after this, and I was giving it pretty much everything to stay on his wheel.  Finished in 57:50.

01-19-2013 Ride

Solo ride from home, a little warmer (about 41 deg) at the start than previous morning rides.  I headed up Azucar Way to Duenda Rd, then over to Pomerado Rd the normal way.  Headed up to the top of Pomerado Rd.  The last mile was a grind, I'm still not in great cardio fitness shape.  Headed downhill, then turned right onto Kearny Villa Rd and connected with Black Mountain Rd heading north.  This has some nice downhill sections and that annoying uphill stretch between Mercy Rd and the 56.  I wasn't fast here either, but I held a decent pace.  Got onto the 56 bike trail heading west, mainly downhill.  There was another rider at about the same pace, but he couldn't keep up with me on the slightly uphill section just beyond Camino del Sur.  I rode all the way down to El Camino Real, taking the dirt path up to the road rather than riding around it.  There were some cyclists here, and I could barely keep up with one of them.  I turned right on Del Mar Heights Rd.  This climb flattens out around the high school, then it's generally flat to uphill to just past San Dieguito Rd if you take the Camino del Sur route back home.  I found another rider who was at about my pace, and he caused me to push it on the climb back toward 4S Ranch.  After that, I was pretty much done, so I dialed it back on the rest of the ride, taking RB Rd down to W Bernardo Dr and back home the usual way.  I was tired at the end but didn't feel wiped out during the day.

01-18-2013 Ride

Solo ride from work over lunch, normal loop with extension to Poway Rd.  It was really great to get out on a ride without having to bundle up or feel cold.  My pace was decent, although I was slow on the little climb up Twin Peaks.

01-13-2013 Ride

Ride over to Dave's house for a time trial ride with him and John.  It was 33 deg at my house when I left, and I was pretty bundled up.  Even still, my toes and fingers got pretty cold during the ride.  It was okay on the ride over there and at the start.  We headed up RB Rd at a modest clip, and I was not feeling that strong.  I could really feel the effects in my legs of the interval training on the previous day's ride.  I put a little bit of separation on the others on the climb up to the high school, but not much.  It got really cold on the downhill after this, and I didn't warm up on the little climb up to Poway Rd.  I was really slow on this section.  We stayed together going downhill on Poway Rd in the first part of the flat section, trading leads.  At one point, I hauled out to push the pace, and John stayed with me as we created separation from Dave.  He rode strongly on Poway Rd, where I couldn't really shake him for good.  I was slow going up Sabre Springs Pkwy, not much faster on Ted Williams Pkwy.  Right after the turn onto Pomerado Rd, John developed a slow leak in his rear tire.  We got back together just after the light at Twin Peaks Rd and rode slowly the rest of the way, which was okay by me.  Just didn't have any drive or endurance on this day.  Finished the time trial route in close to 1:00:00.

01-12-2013 Ride

Solo ride on a chilly Saturday morning.  The roads were damp, and it was really cold at 7:00, so I waited an hour before starting.  Emily started driving back to school around 6:45.  Headed over the freeway and rode up Via Rancho Pkwy.  Over by the park, there was ice on the road.  The little steep climb was a challenge; it had been awhile since I'd ridden it.  Rode over to Del Dios Hwy and down. I had a little bit of a tailwind on this section, and it helped push me up the little climbs heading into Rancho Santa Fe.  I took La Gracia, then Via Arboles to get to Calzada del Bosque and Via de la Valle.  These roads wind around, so I was really careful on the sharp curves.  Good pace generally on Via de la Valle, which I took to El Camino Real.  I dropped my pace a little here, readying for the climb to Del Mar Heights.  Decent climb here, averaging over 10 mph the whole way.  Pretty fast down to the 56 bike trail, where I was also cautious going around some of the sandy, wet corners. Headed up to Camino del Sur, and I kept my speed above 15 mph on the section between Carmel Valley Rd and Camino del Sur, even in the face of a modest headwind.  Headed back to RB Rd, not really pushing the pace consistently anywhere.  Took RB Rd over to Bernardo Center Dr, then home the normal route.  Throughout the ride, I picked spots to stand up and pedal at fairly high effort for at least 80 strokes, working on building my leg strength.

01-06-2013 Ride

Ride from home over to Dave's house for a time trial ride with John.  It looked kinda sketchy when I left home, and I got misted on pretty heavily on the way over.  It was relatively clear at Dave's place, so John and I decided to give it a go.  We headed up RB Rd and Espola without any problems, getting up to Poway Rd okay.  I made pretty good time on the little climb there.  Heading down into Poway on Poway is when it started to rain, and it was pretty bad.  It was still cold, so I was both cold and wet.  I told John I was going to cut it short by heading back via Pomerado Rd, and he agreed.  He was riding pretty well, and he outpaced me on the first part of the climb up by the hospital.  I caught and passed him before the top.  We rode together on wet roads back to Dave's house, and I headed home via RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr.  My toes were numb from the cold and wet.  This was certainly a case of being delighted to finish this ride.

01-05-2013 Ride

Ride over to Dave's house after oversleeping. It was a little over freezing at the start, and I was cold when I got to his house a little late. We headed up the time trial route at a slow pace, and I kept it slow until the base of the climb. Over the course of the 3 mile climb to the top of Poway Rd, I kept my speed above 8 mph, getting a good cardio workout. It warmed up in the sun but was cool in the shade. We headed over the 67 and took Scripps-Poway Pkwy down, fast but not too fast.  All the way to Poway Rd, where we turned left and followed the time trial route to Evening Creek S. Took this little loop and continued on the route, with me keeping it slow on the pace for the rest of the ride.  Rode back to Dave's house and then home using the Pomerado Rd route to get a little extra mileage.

01-04-2013 Ride

Posted this long afterward.  Looks like a ride around lunchtime from work, heading out Bernardo Center Dr to Carmel Valley Rd, taking it to Camino del Sur and turning left there and heading over to the 56 bike path.  I took this down to Carmel Valley Rd, then used it to get back to Camino del Sur, where I turned left and headed back to RB Rd, taking it to Via del Campo and then back to work.  Had a pretty fast average speed, so I was motoring on this ride.

Avg speed = 18.5 mph. Total mileage = 21.3 mi
Total elevation gain = 1610'

01-04-2012 Ride

Solo ride over lunch from work, heading over to Bernardo Center Dr and taking it to Camino del Norte and beyond as it turns into Carmel Valley Rd. Heading up the hill, I didn't feel strong and made only moderate speed. Went over to Camino del Sur and took it to the 56 bike trail. The wind was in my face heading west. I was not fast on Carmel Valley Rd but made good time on the little climb back to Camino del Sur. Turned left and took this road back, doing okay on the slight climb back into 4S Ranch. The wind aided me after I turned onto RB Rd. Made good time back to work.

01-01-2013 Ride

Solo ride from home on New Year's Day, heading through the neighborhood to RB Rd.  It was cloudy and cool throughout the ride.  Rode over to Camino del Sur and took this road to San Dieguito Rd. Down through Fairbanks Ranch, keeping a steady pace over to El Camino Real.  Took this over to Via de la Valle, then down to the fairgrounds. I took the back route to connect onto PCH, then rode pretty well through Del Mar, a gradual uphill. Then over to the 56 bike trail using the normal route. I started slowly on this section but really put in the effort on the stretch up to Camino del Sur. Slowed down for a bit here until I got to Sabre Springs Pkwy. From here, I put in a high effort for most of the rest of the ride. Over Ted Williams Pkwy to Pomerado Rd. I rode hard all the way down to the freeway and did well going up the little hill by the park. One final push to get home, feeling good at the end, muscles tired through the rest of the day.
