Lifecycle ride at work, Level 6, for an hour, 21.2 mi and 21.2 mph. I had to go find the security guard to let me in, since they haven't yet reset the doors to allow 24/7 fitness center access.

04-23-2022 Ride
Solo ride in the afternoon, while Ann was down at Liberty Station with Johnnie. I had my first cataract surgery on Thursday, so I kept the pace modest and didn't push it at all. Wind was fairly brisk, coming from the southwest, so I decided to head that way to make the return easier. Through the neighborhood and up to RB Rd, taking it over to Alva Rd and turning right. All the way this time to its end, following it around and starting up a spur road that leads to a water tank. I only went partway up before turning around and heading back, eventually connecting to Ralphs Ranch Rd to get to Albert Ave and then the normal way out of the neighborhood and into the Del Sur neighborhood via Paseo del Sur. This time, I turned left on Paseo Montenero and then right on Haaland Glen to get back to Paseo del Sur. Down and then back up until I turned right onto Via Azul and rode through another neighborhood, eventually getting back onto Paseo del Sur and riding up to Carmel Valley Rd. I turned left here and benefited from a steady tailwind pushing me up this gradual climb and then back down into 4S Ranch. Took Dove Canyon Rd up and then turned left onto Lone Quail Rd. Over to RB Rd and then home from there via W Bernardo Dr. Felt fine on the ride, took care not to put much pressure on my system, and it worked well.

04-16-2022 Ride
Bisikleta ride, meeting Gideon and Robert near Robert's house. Headed up to RB Rd and then turned right on Alva Rd to ride through the 4S neighborhood to get to the 4S Target. On this ride, there were 8 riders at the start: Robert, Gideon, James, Andy, Charlie, Eric, and Tim. We didn't really kill the pace on this ride at any time. Headed out Camino del Sur to San Dieguito Rd, and down to El Apajo. Right there and then over to Via de la Valle using Rancho de Santa Fe. Gideon was riding pretty strong on some of the climbing sections. We took Via de la Valle to just before Paseo Delicias, then rode the Stud Loop to Paseo Delicias. I pushed it on the little climb up to Paseo Delicias, then laid back on the Stud Loop section until near the end, where Gideon pushed the pace and I grabbed his wheel. Next, we turned left onto El Camino del Norte, and I dialed it back as we rode up and then over to Lago Lindo to get to El Montevideo. Around this time, Gideo peeled off while we continued into downtown Rancho Santa Fe. A brief stop, then we took Linea del Cielo to Lomas Santa Fe. I pushed my pace on the little climbs here and led out, with others working to stay in contact. Down past I-5, we stopped at a gas station for a more extended break before continuing to the coast and turning left. Then it was over to and through Del Mar to get to Carmel Valley Rd, where we turned and used El Camino Real to get to the 56 bike path. I kept up a steady pace, with the others following, as we rode up to Carmel Valley Rd. I was a little slower on this stretch up to Camino del Sur, but Tim was pushing it in the middle of the section, so he and I traded leads until I got out ahead and finished pretty strong, not as fast as Thursday but still pretty good. We continued on the bike path up to Black Mountain Rd, and it helped to have a mild tailwind to push us along. Then we took Black Mountain Rd over to Carmel Valley Rd, and by this time Tim was feeling it, so I slowed down and kept pace with him and James as we rode to Dove Canyon Rd. Left there and up to Camino San Bernardo, turning left and taking this road to Nighthawk Ln and then over to the starting point. The ride home was standard, I was still feeling pretty good. After turning onto Matinal Rd, I rode down to near the traffic light, then turned right on Matinal Cir and rode back to Duenda Rd before turning right and taking that last little hill up to Aguamiel Rd, then home.

04-14-2022 Ride
Ride with Robert and Blair after work, leaving from back parking lot and heading over to Via del Campo. Out to RB Rd, where we turned left and then rode through the 4S neighborhood, including the little jaunt up to the end of Four Gee Rd before turning around and then riding through the Del Sur neighborhood. We eventually connected with Camino del Sur and took it to Carmel Valley Rd. I was riding at steady pace but not killing it. Again steady pace, all of us staying together down to the 56 bike path. There we headed back to Camino del Sur, and we had a tailwind. I pushed a pretty fast pace and Robert stayed on my wheel until near the end, when I got out of the saddle and finished strong. It was a Strava PR for me for the whole distance, in 9:03. From there, we rode back to Carmel Valley Rd and turned right, taking the road up and then down to Dove Canyon Rd. Up the little climb to Camino San Bernardo, turning right and heading back to RB Rd. Back to the site the same way we came out, then I rode home from there. Including my ride into work in the details below.
Avg speed = 16.1 mph. Total mileage = 30.0 mi
Total elevation gain = 1580' (not counting the climb to work in the morning)
Avg heartrate = 126 bpm (for afternoon portion)

04-13-2022 Ride
Solo ride after work, it was a relatively light afternoon, so I headed out a little after 4:00. Onto W Bernardo Dr to get to Bernardo Center Dr, taking it to Camino del Norte and turning left. Rode up to Carmel Mountain Rd, turning right and then right again on Rancho Carmel Dr. Down past Ted Williams Pkwy, turning right on Evening Creek Dr before getting back onto Sabre Spring Pkwy and keeping on it until turning left onto Springhurst Dr to get to Poway Rd. Then I turned right onto Oak Knoll Rd and took it all the way until its end, using local streets to get back to Carriage Rd and thence to Poway Rd. Up to Community Rd, taking it over to Twin Peaks Rd, where I turned left and rode over to Pomerado Rd. Up the gradual climb, aided by a tailwind coming from the southwest. Left at Higa Pl, taking those surface streets through the neighborhood to get back to Bernardo Center Dr, and from there back to the site. Felt strong at times during this ride, particularly when I had a tailwind at my back.

04-09-2022 Ride
Ride over to Robert's house, where I met him and we rode together to the 4S Target starting point. I had gotten my second Shingles shot on Friday, so I wasn't sure how I would be feeling, but after a rough night I woke up feeling okay. On this ride, at the start, the other riders were: Mer, Garry, Darryl, Arnold, Robert, Charlie, Eric, Jed, and Jhonar. We had to fix Robert's tire, twice, at the starting point. We headed out Camino del Sur and before too long Arnold had a big puncture on his tubeless tire, so he turned around and headed back. Over to the 56 bike trail, pace was fast but not as scorching as last week's. Mer, Darryl, and Jed were strong on this day. Down to El Camino Real, temperature was nice on this stretch. On the minor climb up to Del Mar Heights, Mer and I traded leads, and I got out in front at the end. Jhonar's ankle was bothering him, so he split off here and the rest of us continued on. I pushed the pace up to the top of this climb, and then the others caught up, with Jed catching a light and riding ahead. On the downhill, Robert and I cruised past the others to get to the turn at San Dieguito Rd. We made pretty good time in a very loose pace line that broke up on the flats. First rest stop at the gas station before El Apajo, then we continued, turning here and riding up to Via de la Valle. On the climb up to Rancho Santa Fe, Mer set a good pace and I sat behind her until the end, when I pushed past again. On the Del Dios climb, it was Mer, Jed, Darryl and me hanging together, and I had enough near the top to sprint away. Just below the top, Garry had a blowout, which we were able to patch with a $1 bill. I was very surprised that it worked. It was now officially hot on this ride, not really scorching but noticeable. From there, we headed up to Via Rancho Pkwy, and I got to that turn first as well. Up and down to the freeway, for our second rest stop at one of the gas stations on the other side. This was a shorter stop, then we headed back to the starting point via the pedestrian bridge and W Bernardo Dr to RB Rd and Camino del Sur. I had a little left to sprint up the first climb, and my pace on the more gradual climb was okay, but Darryl and Mer had more left and rode out ahead. So it was me and Jed helping each other on this climb as well as the one on RB Rd. Robert turned off at Matinal Rd, a gritty ride for him, having ridden once in the last month plus. I waited to at that turn to make sure the rest of the riders were okay, then rode the last stretch with Garry and Eric. Kinda slow on the ride home, even though the wind seemed to be helping me along. Down RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr and home via that route. Legs held out on this ride, cardio was okay.

04-08-2022 Ride
Solo ride, leaving home around 6:15 and heading through the neighborhood to RB Rd and then up to Dove Canyon Rd. It was cool at the start, but as I climbed higher the temperature warmed up significantly. Over to Carmel Valley Rd and up the two little climbs there at moderate pace. Then it was down to Camino del Sur to start heading back, fun on the slight downhill section. Fairly fast up to Paseo del Sur, where I turned and rode through that Del Sur neighborhood back to Camino del Sur. Stayed on it this time until turning at Camino San Bernardo to get back over to RB Rd. Then it was home through the neighborhood again.
Avg speed = 16.5 mph. Total mileage = 16.7 mi

04-06-2022 Ride
Solo time trial from home on a Wednesday when the Koko Halo meeting was canceled. I kept up a pretty good pace throughout and was slowed down somewhat by the higher level of weekday traffic, having to slow down and stop at more lights than usual. Finished in 1:00:30, just missing breaking an hour.
Avg speed = 17.7 mph. Total mileage = 17.7 mi

04-03-2022 Ride
Solo ride in the morning after cleaning the dirt off my bike, fixing my cyclometer, and lubricating the chain. Up Azucar Way to Matinal Cir, taking it all the way over to Matinal Rd to get to W Bernardo Dr. Over to RB Rd, taking it to Alondra Dr, turning right there and then left onto Rios Rd. Up until it dead-ended, then following the roads back to Summerfield Ln to get back to RB Rd. Rode up to Espola Rd and then down to Twin Peaks Rd. I wasn't pushing the pace too hard on this ride. Down to Community Rd, taking it to Metate Ln and following that road to Pomerado Rd. To Poway Rd via Oak Knoll Rd, and then down to Springhurst Dr and the right onto Sabre Springs Pkwy. At this point, the road got pretty wet and there was a little mist in the air. But I never got really wet on the ride. Over to Evening Creek Dr, taking a left and riding up until it connected with Sabre Springs Pkwy again. Over Rancho Carmel Dr to Carmel Mountain Rd, taking it to Paseo Lucido and then turning right on Bernardo Heights Pkwy to get down to Pomerado Dr. Back to RB Rd, staying on it until turning right onto Olmeda Way and then another right on Capilla Rd to get to Poblado Rd. Left there, then home the normal way through the neighborhood. Legs were definitely tired from the previous day.

04-02-2022 Ride
Well, this was an epic ride. Left from home and experienced some misting, which wasn't a good sign. But I kept going, through the neighborhood to RB Rd, then turning right onto Alva Rd and riding through that 4S Ranch neighborhood. Around this time, I realized that my Fitbit hadn't started recording the ride, so I turned it on. Out at Four Gee Rd, where I turned right and rode up to the top before turning around and meeting the others at the 4S Target. On this ride at the start were: Audrey, Zac, Gideon, Perse, Cam, Jed, Ray, and Charlie. All strong riders, which meant it was going to be a workout day. Out Camino del Sur to the 56 bike trail. Perse and Gideon passed me on the little climb before San Dieguito Rd, but on the flat I laid out at high speed and passed them both. Attacks from others on all of the climbs on this day, and all I tried to do was not get too far behind. I was mostly in the middle of the riders during this day. Took the bike trail down to El Camino Real, where Perse and Gideon split off to head back, and we headed south to Carmel Mountain Rd, I kept on Zac's wheel on that little climb. Right there and then a left onto Vista Sorrento Pkwy, taking it down to Sorrento Valley Blvd, where we turned right and got onto the bike path that parallels I-5. I kept it dialed back on this climb, knowing it was going to be a long day. Onto Gilman Dr, where the roads were pretty wet and it was drizzling. Right again onto Gilman Dr, riding through the UCSD campus and then on a nice downhill to get to the Rose Canyon Bike Path. This is a new path, really nice until you get to the old part, where it is too narrow for cross traffic. We followed into Mission Bay Park,, getting onto E Mission Bay Dr and making pretty good time on the flats, although I was putting in a significant effort to hang with Cam until the others caught up. We did the time trial route around Fiesta Island, my first time riding there, and I did better than expected. Zac really killed it, and the others got out ahead, Ray more so, at the start. But over time I was able to reel Ray in, along with a small group of the others, including Jed. The three of us traded leads, but I had a little extra at the end and finished second in the group. A brief rest, then we rode over to Sea World Dr, riding on a combination of roads and bike paths to get to Ingraham St. Left to get to Crown Point, where we stopped to a restroom break and then waited while Cam changed a flat. Took a series of surface streets to Balboa Ave, then turned left onto Soledad Mountain Rd. I was kinda hoping not to have to do this climb on this day, but alas. Did okay on the climb, set a Strava PR for the segment, but couldn't keep up with Zac, Ray, or Jed. We rode up to the overlook for another short break, then we headed down via Nautilus St, with me taking it really easy due to not wanting to build up too much speed on wet roads. Right on La Jolla Blvd and then another right onto Prospect St to get over to Torrey Pines Rd. We then turned left onto La Jolla Shores Dr, and the climb up to N Torrey Pines Rd was really tough, steep and on tiring legs. I couldn't match the pace of Jed or Ray but felt pretty good coming third on the climb in such a group. We stayed on that road down toward the beach at Torrey Pines, and on the way down my cyclometer speed sensor loosened up, so I had to stop and adjust it. Another regroup after we turned off the coast hwy onto Carmel Valley Rd, where we rode up a ways and then turned around to use the restrooms by the State Beach. From there, it was back to the 56 bike path, where we retraced our route to the 4S Target. Just after turning onto Camino del Sur, Charlie got a flat, so we helped him fix it. People's legs were getting tired, mine included, and the pace slowed down. Still, it was Ray and Jed who were a cut above the others, and I spent the last part of the ride on Camino del Sur either riding with them or watching them get out ahead of me. Got back to the starting point after those two, and I could really tell I was in calorie deficit. Surprisingly, my legs didn't cramp up at all. The ride back home was slow but uneventful. This was the longest ride I have ridden since the Shanti Ride in Israel, and I felt pretty good during it, not able to lead much but able for the most part of keep in sight of the leaders.
