Solo ride later in the afternoon, leaving from work and heading out to Camino del Norte. Go onto Rancho Carmel Dr and took it up to Ted Williams Pkwy, from there to Pomerado Rd. My pace was solid but not scorching. All the way down to W Bernardo Dr and back to work. The climb back went pretty well. I kept it above 10 mph on the last bit, and that felt like an accomplishment.

01-26-2014 Rides
Time trial ride in the morning with John from my house up to Jim's place, where he joined us. All through this ride, I never really let it all hang out, just kept a steady pace on the inclines and stayed with John on the flats. John was moving pretty well, so it was something of a challenge to hang with him. Finished, surprisingly, with a new PR, just, at 59:45. My cardio has really improved in the last month with all of the riding.

Ride in the afternoon over to Joe's house from church, taking Broadway. I kept a steady but not scorching pace over there. Met up with him, and we headed over to Country Club Ln. Centre City Pkwy going north was closed due to an officer-involved shooting investigation, so we kept going and turned right on Nutmeg St, which connects into Centre City Pkwy a little further north. I was steady but not super fast on this section of the ride. We took this road all the way to Camino del Rey and headed west there into a pretty steady breeze. I led out here and made good time on the slight downhill slope. We turned right on W Lilac Rd and headed up to old 395. This road has an average slope that's probably pretty similar to the Foxen Canyon section of the Solvang Century. I was able to keep my pace above 10 mph, and above 11 mph for most of it. At the top, I rode back down about a half a mile to where Joe was and turned around to ride to the stop sign again. We rode up to the top of 395, stopped briefly for some electrolyte drops, then headed back down. Rolling hills until the climb back up Champagne Blvd, which is over 2.5 mi at 3.5%. Here, I was also able to keep it above 10 mph, felt like a pretty decent accomplishment on this day. The weather started to cool down around this point. We turned right on Deer Springs Rd and took it and Twin Oaks Valley Pkwy back to Richmar Ave to Firebird Ln and onto Mission Rd, taking it to Woodland Pkwy. The wind was at our backs here, and we made good time. We stopped at a park on Woodland Pkwy so Joe could use the restroom, then we continued to El Norte Pkwy, taking it to Centre City Pkwy. Back to Joe's house via Iris Lane and Village Dr. I had a quick glass of wine with Joe, then headed back to Centre City Pkwy by retracing this route. From here, it was the normal way home. I made pretty good, not great time, hitting a number of lights and not really having a lot of push left in my legs for the stretch across the bridge or the little climb before the park. Felt fine at the end, pushing it all the way to the finish. Legs held out well, but they were tired from the day's exertions. Cardio in really good shape.

01-25-2014 Ride & Hike
Ride up to Jim's house via Azucar Way, where we headed over to Duenda and then to W Bernardo Dr. Down to and across the freeway. I was riding at a pace to stay with Jim for the most part. We headed up BVP to Sunset Dr and on to Juniper St, which we took to Washington St. Over to Centre City Pkwy and out to Deer Springs Pkwy. I felt good, going at a slower pace but with strength in my legs whenever I needed it. We then headed back into San Marcos via Twin Oaks Valley Pkwy, taking it to Barham Dr and getting over, at a steady pace, to Mission Rd. Back into town, connecting to Valley Pkwy via Tulip St and then over to Quince St. Over to 13th Ave and back onto Centre City Pkwy, from there the normal route. I took it really slowly up the last hill to Jim's house, felt just fine at the end.

01-20-2014 Ride
Ride over to church, taking the BVP/Sunset route. I met up with Joe at church, and we headed out Broadway all the way to Jesmond Dene Rd. I kept a decent pace on the last little climb, but it was a steady, not scorching, pace. We headed out the old 395 to Old Castle Rd, and I was really slowed down on the downhill by Lawrence Welk Resort by my windbreaker. I caught up with Joe on the flats. Before going up the climb on Old Castle, I took my jacket off and switched to short-finger gloves. Pretty good on the horseshoe portion of the climb, but quite a bit slower on the middle section, which is the steepest portion. The grade levels out on the latter third of the climb, and it's bearable. Waited at the top for Joe, then we continued onto Lilac Rd, which has a more gradual climb of about a mile and a half that went just fine. We connected again, then headed down and over to Valley Center Rd, taking it pretty easy. I really dialed it back on the last little climb up before the long downhill. Back into town via Valley Pkwy all the way back to Kalmia St, then to the church. Again, this was a slow-paced section for me. I headed back home the normal way via Centre City Pkwy, again not really trying to push the pace. Felt just fine at the end, not really tired, legs in good shape and really good cardio levels.

01-18-2014 Ride & Hike
Solo ride, starting from home at around 7:30. The temperature was around 40 deg at the start, but I never felt that cold, and the day warmed up pretty quickly. I headed over toward Dave's old house and up the old time trial route to Poway Rd, stopping at the intersection to take off my outer gloves and headband. It was slow and steady up to the 67, where things had warmed up enough for me to go to light gloves and no jacket. Over to Scripps-Poway Pkwy and down to Pomerado Rd, turning left to climb up to the top (pretty slow going, tired legs from the previous day's short, fast ride). Then I took the normal way down toward John's house, staying on Springbrook all the way to Sabre Springs Pkwy. Throughout this ride, my pace was steady but never spectacular. Over to Carmel Mountain Rd to connect to Camino del Norte. From here, it was the normal way home. Fairly short ride with decent elevation.

Solo ride from work over lunch, heading out Bernardo Center Dr to Carmel Valley Rd. It was warm, and I was determined to put in a high-effort ride. I pushed the pace on the climb up to Black Mountain Rd. Headed over to the 56 bike trail on Camino del Sur and rode pretty well into a headwind. Made good time on Carmel Valley Rd coming back, similar for Camino del Sur although I was a little slower than I would have liked on the slightly climbing section back into 4S Ranch. Back to Via del Campo via RB Rd, pushing the final pace to try and finish strong.

01-15-2014 Ride
Solo ride from work in the mid-afternoon, on a warm day with Santa Ana conditions (not super windy). I headed out Bernardo Center Dr onto Carmel Valley Rd out to Camino del Sur, taking a left and heading out toward the bike trail, then turning around and heading back. Pace was okay on the climbs up to Black Mountain Rd, definitely slower than I've done in the past. It was a steady ride back on Camino del Sur to RB Rd, which I took down on the newly paved section to W Bernardo Dr. I felt pretty good on the final little climb back to work, keeping it pretty easily above 10 mph, with an effort at the top to sustain the pace.

01-12-2014 Rides
Time trial ride in the morning with John, where I intended to keep my pace down. So I rode with John, slowing down when I got some separation from him on the gradual climbs. After we got to the hospital, he picked up the pace on the flats and downhill sections over to Sabre Springs Pkwy, and I was working to keep up with him and trade leads. I got some separation on Sabre Springs Pkwy, and then again on Rancho Carmel Dr, but I wasn't going hard in either case. We rode basically together from there back home, with me getting out in front when there was some incline and slowing down to meet up with him. Finished in 59:48, a new PR even though I wasn't intending to better last week's time.

Ride from church over to Joe's house, following Broadway to Village Dr. I was taking an easy pace, just planning on getting my afternoon miles in without a big effort. I met up with Joe, and we retraced the route to El Norte Pkwy, taking it up to Valley Pkwy. The wind was coming from the west, so this part was fairly easy. Over Valley Pkwy to BVP and up to Citrus Ave, which we used to get over to the 78. This road has a couple of gradual climbs but a nice, steady fast stretch down to the turn. We rode on the 78 out to San Pasqual Academy, riding by it and looping around via Bandy Canyon Rd to get back to the 78. On the way back, the wind was in our faces, so I hunkered down and powered through it, with Joe riding in my draft the whole way back to San Pasqual Rd, getting there via Old Milky Way. On the climb, I dialed it back, as I was pretty worn from the effort riding into the wind. We stopped at Orfila Winery, intending to have a glass of wine, but it was the same for the wine tasting, so that's what we did. It was a nice respite, but perhaps a little too much wine. We headed back to BVP afterward, and it took me a couple of minutes to adjust to riding after the wine. The effort of pedaling helped clear my mind, although I wasn't inclined to push the pace. We rode together to the 78, turning left and heading back into Escondido. I turned off at Idaho Ave, going up and over the little bump at a slow pace. Back to Escondido Blvd and over to Centre City Pkwy via Felicita Rd. Home via the normal way, just keeping a decent pace but not feeling any need to exert myself.

01-11-2014 Ride
Ride from Carmel Mountain over to John's house, cold on my legs to start but not too bad. We headed over to Pomerado Rd and down to Kearny Villa Rd, taking it over to Balboa Ave. John was riding well on the flats, easily keeping pace with me and pushing the pace in some places. I had my jacket on, which really catches the wind on downhills and slows me down. So he got out in front on the downhill sections of Balboa Ave, making me work hard to catch up with him. We rode over to Soledad Mountain Rd, and my early climb was not great. Slow and no will to push it. Around 2/3 of the way up, this older guy passed me, so I hung on his wheel. I could catch him when the incline increased, but he was pushing hard in a high gear on the flatter sections. I did catch up near the cross, and I waited for John to get there at the top. We headed down Via Capri, and John had a flat in the first steep section. We continued on to Hidden Valley Rd and over to Torrey Pines Rd, taking this gradual uphill to La Jolla Village Dr. John was starting to slow down by this point. We took this road until it merged into Miramar Rd. Although it's flat and relatively free of stops, this is a bad road, very stinky, and the bike path is in horrible shape. We endured it and rode back to John's place the normal way. I felt good on the climb up Pomerado Rd, keeping a solid pace on the last little section. Back to his house for a quick soda, then back to my car with a steady pace, legs felt good and not overexerted at the end.

01-05-2014 Rides
New time trial ride, from my house, with John and Jim. Even though I knew I would be riding later with Joe, I pushed the pace once we got to Pomerado Rd. We all rode together on the flats, and I put some separation on the slight inclines. John was riding strong and helped set the pace after the hospital and on Poway Rd. I kept it going up Sabre Springs Pkwy/Rancho Carmel Dr, when the weather started to warm up noticeably. After this point, I was going close to all out, and I was able to finish in 59:50.

In the afternoon, I rode after church over to Joe's house, taking Broadway to Village Rd. We started out fairly slowly, but Joe was riding well, so I kept a pretty fast pace, as fast as I could on tired legs. Headed out to Country Club Ln to El Norte Pkwy, connecting to Borden Rd. This route is fairly flat with roads in good shape. Headed over to Mission Rd via Mulberry Dr and took it to Las Posas Rd, which we used to connect to San Marcos Blvd. On the way out, we were generally riding into the wind, which slowed us down. We went out to Melrose Dr, then turned around and retraced our route back to Joe's house. The ride back seemed like it was faster, given the steady breeze at our backs. I then took Village Rd to Iris Ln, connecting to Centre City Pkwy and heading back home the normal way. I couldn't put a big push into my legs, but I made decent enough time. On the last little climbs, I was worn out and couldn't go very fast.

01-04-2014 Ride
Solo ride over to Dave's house, following the normal route over the freeway. The weather was a little overcast, which helped to keep the temperature higher than it had been on recent rides. At his house, I met up with him and John, and we headed over to Felicita Rd, then up to Juniper St. We headed over to Idaho Ave, which has a really short, steep section to climb. We took this road over to BVP, then out to Valley Pkwy. Other than the Idaho climb, we pretty much stayed together on this part of the ride. On the climb up to Lake Wohlford, there was some separation. I felt pretty good on this climb, although I didn't really push the pace. That first mile is a kicker. We continued on around the lake to Woods Valley Rd for a rapid descent to Valley Center Rd. A short climb, then the long steady downhill back into Escondido. I didn't ride in a crouch, so the others got pretty far ahead of me, which was okay by me. I caught up with them before the turn onto El Norte Pkwy. Here we rode together for a time, but when I pushed the pace Dave would drop off the back, so I kept it dialed down. Over to Nordahl Rd, connecting to Auto Park Way and then to Valley Pkwy. Here I was riding steady but not all out. It's a gradual climb to Citracado Pkwy, where we turned left and climbed the final little bit to the connector road onto Gamble Ln. This road has a gate across it, so we had to portage our bikes over it. After the gate, it's a short, steep downhill back into Dave's neighborhood. Left on Felicita Rd and right on Brotherton Rd, then back to his place. I rode home the normal way, again feeling pretty strong, no muscle soreness at all and just a little bit of tiredness I could feel when I stretched it out. My cardio is in really great shape, going to try and do enough aerobic exercises to keep it at this high level.

01-01-2014 Ride
Ride on New Year's Day over to John's house, taking the normal Pomerado route. We headed up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy and out to the 67. The last climb was okay, I didn't race up it, but I was able to stay in the saddle and keep a steady pace throughout. Down the 67 and staying on it until Lakeside Ave, where we turned and headed over to Riverside Dr, connecting to Mast Blvd via Riverford Rd, El Nopal, and Magnolia Ave. I would get ahead of John on the climbs, but he was riding pretty well on the flats. I had a good ride on the 52 bike trail, starting at a slower pace but keeping it above 10 mph all the way, most of it above 11 mph. At the top, I had an energy bar while I waited for John. I think we had a little bit of a tailwind. We headed over to Clairemont Mesa Blvd via Santee Rd, then on to Ruffin Rd and connecting to Kearny Villa Rd. Here was where I was starting to feel run down. I could keep a pace with John but not get out in front. Same thing going up Pomerado Rd, other than the last climb, where I got some separation. Back to his house the normal way. I retraced my route to get home and felt pretty good, not super fast but my legs were holding out. It was kind of a second wind. My legs felt fine after the ride, and my cardio is in really good shape. I could have ridden harder but didn't feel the motivation to push it.
