01-30-2022 Ride

Solo ride in the afternoon, it took me a little self-motivation to get going, and when I started I didn't know where I was going to ride.  Down by the park and then up Pomerado Rd to Poway Rd.  Not pushing the pace but not lagging too much.  Occasional stretches where I got out of the saddle and pushed a little harder.  From there, I followed the time trial route back to Carmel Mountain Rd, took it by the Home Depot, then it was back onto the time trial route to finish it off.  Legs were tired but no evidence of muscle cramping or pulls from the previous day, which was a good sign.

01-29-2022 Ride

Well, this was an interesting day.  Over to Robert's house via Capilla Rd climb, where he was running late.  I was riding on my new Campy wheels (more on this later).  We met up with Gideon on the way and rode together over to the 4S Target.  It was cool at the start, but I ditched my jacket and long-fingered gloves in Ray's car.  A big group, 17 riders at the start: me, Robert, Gideon, Jed, Ray, Perse, Zac, Audrey, Arnold, Andy, James, Jamil, Kamal, Mohammed, Al (first time for me riding with him, more on him later), Charlie, and Mer.  We decided to ride down Three Witches rather than come back up it.  So it was out Camino del Sur, where Jamil and Kamal got ahead on the first little climb before the run.  I put in a big effort to catch and pass them before the turn.  Down into Fairbanks Ranch, where it was cold enough on the downhill and in the flats for me to wish I'd kept my warmer gloves.  Pace line on the flats, then we turned onto El Camino Real and then onto Via de la Valle.  All the way to the 101 on this road, where we had a short break just at the turn.  Then it was a ride along the coast to La Costa Ave to regroup there.  There were a lot of riders on the road, and right before this stop another rider slowed down and touched wheels with the rider behind her, causing him to almost crash, which would likely have taken me down as well.  So, I got lucky there.  My bike had been making a lot of noise, so at this stop I found out that I had a lot of play in my cassette.  Kept riding though.  We waited for the others and heard that Audrey had hit her calf against one of the pylons by the bike lane on the 101, giving her quite a scare but not any significant injury.  So she and Robert turned around there and rode back to the Leucadia 7-Eleven while most of the rest of us kept on.  Around this time, I think Al and Andy turned around to shorten their ride.  We rode up to Poinsettia Ln and turned around there, heading back to the rest stop for a long (too long) break.  After we started up, the group got pretty split up, and we heard later that Robert, Audrey, and maybe Mohammed turned to shorten the ride by heading back up Three Witches.  Andy and Al were already headed back too.  The rest, spread out, rode back.  Around Solana Beach, Gideon pointed out Revolution Cycles, so he and I rode back to it and I was able to get another spacer ring for my rear cassette, borrow their spline wrench, and tighten the cassette down really well, no more noise or movement.  Was great after that fix.  We rode back, collected some of the others along the way, and headed through Del Mar to Carmel Valley Rd.  Over to the turnoff to the 56 bike path, where we heard that James had had a flat.  He was running tubular tires, so it was going to take more time.  I rode back to help out, and Kamal and Jamil were there as well.  Around this time, I heard from Kamal that Al had experienced shortness of breath and chest pains, but it wasn't clear what was going on.  I sent the others a text for them to continue and we would meet them at the end, and we rode at a slower pace up the bike trail to Camino del Sur.  There, most of the remaining riders were waiting, since Andy had headed back to get his car and come pick up Al's bike.  Al had been taken by the ambulance to the hospital, where I heard later that he had a heart attack and was operated on.  He was in ICU as of this posting.  On the way back via Camino del Sur, I tried to stay with the lead riders and had some success, but my legs were telling me there wasn't much left.  Still, it was me, Ray, and Zac who broke away from the others on the little climb by Del Sur.  I tried to hang onto their wheels but just didn't have enough left.  So I came into the parking lot maybe a minute or so behind them.  Right quad was sore, not really cramping but feeling like it had been slightly pulled.  So I took it slow on the ride home from there, taking RB Rd down to W Bernardo Dr and home via that route.  Legs were sore later, and I was tired but recovered pretty quickly.  New wheels are really awesome, especially after I had such good luck getting my rear cassette fixed on the ride!

01-23-2022 Ride

Solo ride over to Dave's house, taking the freeway and the back way behind the mall.  Wasn't really pushing the pace but also wasn't dogging it.  Met with John and Dave, and we rode the Escondido time trial route.  During the ride with them, I kept a similar mentality, not letting up too much but not going hard.  Finished the time trial section in around 1:02, need to be more cognizant of elapsed time before I start that portion.  Home the normal way, keeping it about 10 mph on the final two little climbs.

01-22-2022 Ride

Solo ride over to Robert's house, where I met him and rode up to Gideon's house to meet him too.  It was colder at the start of this ride.  Over to 4S Target, where we gathered for the Bisikleta ride.  By that time I didn't need my jacket or ear covers.  12 riders on this day started:  Paul, Robert, Gideon, Ray, Jed, Kamal, Jamil, Mohammed (Kamal's brother-in-law), Ojie, Cam, Audrey, and Arnold.  We headed down Camino del Sur to San Dieguito Rd, then down to El Apajo.  Up Via de Santa Fe to Paseo Delicias, where I attacked near the top and got to the stop sign first, but still attacked too soon.  Back toward Lake Hodges, turning onto El Camino del Norte and following the same route that Avinoam and I did on Sunday.  Kamal in particular was regularly attacking and is able to keep a very fast pace on flats and slight inclines.  He has lost 20 pounds since starting to ride with the group.  On the little climb past the turn onto Rancho Santa Fe Rd, Audrey jumped out, but I was able to keep up with her.  Down to Olivenhaim Rd, which turns into Leucadia Blvd at El Camino Real.  We climbed that short steep little section and then turned right onto Quail Gardens Dr, which is a fun little downhill taking us to Saxony Rd, right to get to La Costa Ave.  Down to the coast on this road, where we turned right an rode toward Carlsbad to get another couple of miles in before turning around at Ponto Rd.  Then it was back via the Coast Hwy to Leucadia, for a stop at the 7-Eleven for an extended break.  We continued from there, although Ojie split from us not too long after.  Through Del Mar, including a challenging little uphill race between me and Audrey coming into the village.  Left onto Carmel Valley Rd, another pit stop by the restrooms near the beach, then we continued over to the 56 bike trail and up to Camino del Sur.  Mohammed was really feeling it, so he split off at Carmel Valley Rd and took that back to the starting point.  On the gradual climb up to the turn, I hung on as the lead group thinned out until it was only me, Ray, and Audrey, then Audrey made her move and I followed, finally overtaking her and getting to the turn first.  That took a big effort.  On the way back, my quads were cramping when I tried to stand up and push hard, so I dialed it back and did my best to hang with the others near the lead.  Arnold came on strong at the end, don't know where he found his energy reserves.  Good to get back to the starting point.  We waited for the others to arrive, then I rode back, slowly, with Gideon before heading home, taking Cabela Dr to Duenda Rd on the return.  Felt fine at the end, really tired legs but not too sore.  My back felt good on this ride as well.

01-16-2022 Ride

Solo ride over to Avi's house off of Via Rancho Parkway, taking the freeway route and riding slowly up the climb there.  We met up and then headed out to Del Dios Hwy, heading down to El Camino del Norte.  I was feeling the effects of the previous day's ride, but the day was enjoyable due to good weather this time.  There were a couple of times that I pushed the pace but not too hard, preferring instead to concentrate on trying to keep my pace above 10 mph throughout.  We rode over to Rancho Santa Fe Rd and turned right, then stayed on it as it turned and headed toward San Elijo Hills.  On this climb, the sun got a little intense and I felt hot, but it passed.  Right on San Elijo Hills Rd, taking it up to Elfin Forest Rd and riding in the opposite direction of the route from the previous day.  The downhill was much more fun than the corresponding climb.  We stayed on Harmony Grove Rd until Enterprise St, then turned left and rode up to its dead end before turning around and riding to Andreesen Dr, turning left (we should have turned right) and riding up to Auto Park Way, then a left to ride up to Citracado Pkwy to get to Stone Brewery, where we had a beer and a good conversation before riding back to Andreesen Dr and then Enterprise St to get to Hale St.  Up to Avenida del Diablo, turning right and getting to Citracado Pkwy, turning left and heading back to Del Dios Hwy.  From there, it was a turn onto Via Rancho Pkwy, that last climb up to Avi's driveway (slow, my legs were wearing out), and then home the normal way from there, albeit at a really slow pace.  I was done by then, no cramping but no push left either.  Nice ride, glad it wasn't any longer.

01-15-2022 Ride

Solo ride over to Robert's house, and it was lightly raining on the way over.  I should have followed this warning sign and called it a day.  We both headed over to the 4S Ranch Target and met up with the other riders on this day:  Robert, Charlie, Kamal, Jamil (joined us by the Lake Hodges pedestrian bridge), Ray, Zac, Audrey, James, and Andy.  After some discussion, we decided to ride and start by heading north.  So we rode over to RB Rd, down to W Bernardo Dr, across Lake Hodges on the pedestrian bridge, to get onto Via Rancho Pkwy.  I was okay on the first little climb but couldn't keep up with Robert and Ray on the next one, doing my best to keep them in sight.  We rode up to Del Dios Hwy, turned right and took it up to Citracado Pkwy to take a left.  Then it was over to Harmony Grove Rd.  Not too long after this turn, Robert, Ray, and Zac took off and I didn't have any response.  So on the climb up to San Elijo Hills, I rode solo, with Audrey not too far behind me.  It was a slog, a clear indication that I didn't have good legs on this day.  We stopped, for too long a break, at a gas station in San Elijo Hills, I started to get chilled, and it got worse on the way down to Rancho Santa Fe Rd.  On the climb after we turned left, a group of us stayed together, then Ray jumped ahead and I followed.  So it was just the two of us, with him ahead of me, on the turn at La Costa Ave.  By this time, it was raining and not pleasant at all.  Everybody caught up at El Camino Real, and I dropped back and rode in the rear, hanging with Jamil for the section of the ride down to PCH.  We turned there and started heading back, thankfully not stopping again.  The group spread out after riding through Encinitas, and I was near the back again as we headed up that little climb into Solana Beach.  Kamal and Jamil were riding side by side and somehow Jamil lost his balance and went down.  He was shaken up but not so badly, so I helped get his bike back into riding condition, and we continued, more slowly.  Just after the turn onto Via de la Valle, I had a fast flat and pulled over.  Fixing it was pretty quick, but as soon as I pumped the tire up with a CO2 cartridge, the tire blew, and I knew I was done for the day.  I probably could have made it back home, but it was going to be a real challenge.  So I called Ann and had her come pick me up.  On the way home, we saw nearly all of the riders, many of them looking like they were nearly done in.  Bike was filthy, so in the afternoon I cleaned it and put new tires on.

01-02-2022 Ride

Solo ride over to Dave's house, using the route taking me behind the mall and feeling it in my lower back.  Maybe too much riding recently.  I met up with him and John, and Dave showed me his new Tesla.  Nice.  We rode his version of the time trial route, out to Deer Springs Rd and back.  Near the turnaround point, I had a flat, but I got it changed pretty quickly.  Not super fast on this ride, but Dave and John were pushing the pace on the flat sections, and I had to push to stay with John in particular.  Finished the time trial portion in about 1:02.  Above 10 mph on the last two climbs back home, taking the normal route.

01-01-2022 Ride

First ride of the new year, it was a solo, slow one.  Not much energy on this day.  Up through the neighborhood, where I saw Joe S. with a couple of other riders coming down Matinal Rd while I rode up.  Out RB Rd to Camino del Sur and then over to the 56 bike path.  Then it was down to El Camino Real, taking a right and heading up to Del Mar Heights, then down into the flats.  Back up Three Witches, a slow climb on this day.  Then back Camino del Sur to Paseo del Sur, taking this road through the neighborhood until Babcock St, where I turned right and followed it until using Potomac Ridge Rd to get back to Paseo del Sur.  Then it was Four Gee Rd into the 4S Ranch neighborhood, taking the normal route there to get over to Alva Rd and then to RB Rd.  Home via W Bernardo Dr and Duenda Rd, throwing in a little loop near the end to have more than 35 mi on the day.
