01-22-2022 Ride

Solo ride over to Robert's house, where I met him and rode up to Gideon's house to meet him too.  It was colder at the start of this ride.  Over to 4S Target, where we gathered for the Bisikleta ride.  By that time I didn't need my jacket or ear covers.  12 riders on this day started:  Paul, Robert, Gideon, Ray, Jed, Kamal, Jamil, Mohammed (Kamal's brother-in-law), Ojie, Cam, Audrey, and Arnold.  We headed down Camino del Sur to San Dieguito Rd, then down to El Apajo.  Up Via de Santa Fe to Paseo Delicias, where I attacked near the top and got to the stop sign first, but still attacked too soon.  Back toward Lake Hodges, turning onto El Camino del Norte and following the same route that Avinoam and I did on Sunday.  Kamal in particular was regularly attacking and is able to keep a very fast pace on flats and slight inclines.  He has lost 20 pounds since starting to ride with the group.  On the little climb past the turn onto Rancho Santa Fe Rd, Audrey jumped out, but I was able to keep up with her.  Down to Olivenhaim Rd, which turns into Leucadia Blvd at El Camino Real.  We climbed that short steep little section and then turned right onto Quail Gardens Dr, which is a fun little downhill taking us to Saxony Rd, right to get to La Costa Ave.  Down to the coast on this road, where we turned right an rode toward Carlsbad to get another couple of miles in before turning around at Ponto Rd.  Then it was back via the Coast Hwy to Leucadia, for a stop at the 7-Eleven for an extended break.  We continued from there, although Ojie split from us not too long after.  Through Del Mar, including a challenging little uphill race between me and Audrey coming into the village.  Left onto Carmel Valley Rd, another pit stop by the restrooms near the beach, then we continued over to the 56 bike trail and up to Camino del Sur.  Mohammed was really feeling it, so he split off at Carmel Valley Rd and took that back to the starting point.  On the gradual climb up to the turn, I hung on as the lead group thinned out until it was only me, Ray, and Audrey, then Audrey made her move and I followed, finally overtaking her and getting to the turn first.  That took a big effort.  On the way back, my quads were cramping when I tried to stand up and push hard, so I dialed it back and did my best to hang with the others near the lead.  Arnold came on strong at the end, don't know where he found his energy reserves.  Good to get back to the starting point.  We waited for the others to arrive, then I rode back, slowly, with Gideon before heading home, taking Cabela Dr to Duenda Rd on the return.  Felt fine at the end, really tired legs but not too sore.  My back felt good on this ride as well.

Avg speed = 17.1 mph. Total mileage = 57.6 mi
Avg heartrate = 129 bpm
Total elevation gain = 3240'
