04-30-2016 Ride & Hike

Posted long afterwards.  Rode in the morning over to Dave's house.  I headed past the park and over the pedestrian bridge to get over to BVP, which I took up to Sunset Dr.  Then to Juniper St, where I turned and took it all the way to Washington Ave before turning left there and riding over to Centre City Pkwy.  From there it was the normal way to his place, but I stopped my ride there.  I can only guess that weather kept us from riding, and maybe I got a ride back home with Jim.

Avg speed = 15.0 mph. Total mileage = 10.8 mi
Total elevation gain = 560'

Later in the morning, I went with Ann to Mission Trails Park to hike to the top of Cowles Peak and Pyles Peak in the same day.  I remember that this was a big effort, particularly for Ann.  We had missed when the church group hiked these peaks, so we did it on our own.  We made it to both summits successfully, but it wore us down and I was cranky at the end.  Ann and I went afterwards to the park office and got our certifications for having completed the peaks challenge.  Ann bought a commemorative t-shirt, as I recall.  She wanted to have dinner out on the way home, but I was too tired, so we went directly home instead.

04-29-2016 Ride

Early morning solo ride before work on a Friday, heading through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd and then over to W Bernardo Dr.  Up the hill and past work, keeping it above 10 mph with a struggle.  From here, I rode the time trial route in reverse, with a not-too-bad stretch on the stretch of Pomerado Rd after the Poway Rd turn.  Slowed down near the tops of these gradual inclines, before Ted Williams Pkwy and the hospital.  Kept going on Pomerado Rd past RB Rd, following it down to the freeway and home the normal way from there.  This was the first ride in a long time where I averaged more than 17.5 mph.  Legs felt a little tired from my run earlier in the week, but cardio was in okay form.

04-27-2016 Run

Run over lunch at work, taking the rectangular route by heading out W Bernardo Dr to Bernardo Center Dr and then around.  My first two miles where a little faster, but I felt like my finish was okay, not falling off too much in pace, given that it was more generally uphill.

04-26-2016 Ride

Ride over to yoga, following the normal route.  Nothing particularly memorable about this ride, felt average in power output, felt good at the start of the incline sections but didn't have the stamina to keep up a steady pace all the way to the top of the longer sections.  Finished with an elapsed time a little more than 36 min.

04-25-2016 Ride

Posted long afterwards.  Ride after work from home, heading up Aguamiel Rd to Duenda Rd and then over Luz Pl to Cabela Dr.  To Matinal Rd, which I used to get to W Bernardo Dr.  Up to RB Rd, turning right there and taking it up to Camino del Sur.  Over to the 56 bike path, riding up that small climb to Black Mountain Rd and turning left there to get over to Carmel Valley Rd.  Up and then down to Dove Canyon Rd, which I used to get back to RB Rd, and then home through the normal neighborhood route.

04-23-2016 Hikes

A couple of hikes while we were camping at Palomar Mountain State Park.  Posted long afterwards.  First hike in the morning was up into the French Valley, looks like I only mapped the first half or so of the hike because the route doesn't show us returning.

In the afternoon, we (I'm assuming Ann joined me) hiked up from the campground to Doane Valley Rd and kept going on the trail after Doane Valley Rd veered off.  I think we were camping with others from church, and my recollection is that Kay was on this hike as well.  Not sure about that though.

04-17-2016 Ride

Time trial ride with John, it was the first time he rode this route since Jan 3.  My legs were tired from the previous day's ride and hike, but I put a lot of effort into this ride.  Cardio was fine, but I need to build stamina in my legs so that I can push my cardio even harder.  It was a little chilly at the beginning but overall the temperature was really nice.  Finished in 1:03:14.

04-16-2016 Ride & Hike

Solo ride initially from the parking lot by Carmel Mountain Rd over to John's house, taking the normal route.  It was really chilly until I started on the climb up to his place.  We met up and headed over to Scripps-Poway Pkwy, turning right.  It was warming up by this time.  We took it all the way to Mercy Rd and Black Mountain Rd, then riding up to Mira Mesa Blvd.  From there, we rode on the 4th of July route down into Sorrento Valley and right on Vista Sorrento Pkwy, up to Carmel Creek Rd and taking a left to get down to Sorrento Valley Rd.  South until we tried to connect with Carroll Canyon Rd.  It looked like the road was under construction, so we doubled back and headed up Mira Mesa Blvd to Scranton Rd and then down to Carroll Canyon Rd.  Left here, riding up a gradual climb on Carroll Rd until we turned right on Camino Santa Fe to get over to Miramar Rd.  From here, it was the normal way back to John's house.  I was riding steadily, but I still don't have a lot of stamina to maintain a high output for a sustained period of time.  Stopped at John's house for a quick rest and a soda until heading back the way I came.  Legs felt fine at the end, just no high output available.  More work and miles needed to get back in shape.

Run in the early morning through the normal neighborhood route, which I hadn't done in quite a while.  Felt generally okay. just slower than in the past, particularly on the steeper or longer uphill sections.  Again, more workouts should help here.

04-12-2016 Ride

Ride over to yoga, following the standard route.  There was another cyclist on BVP, so I chased him down and then used him chasing me as incentive to put out a pretty high output on the climbing section.  It was a workout, and I had to slow down sooner than I would have liked.  Ride went generally well, finished in about 37 min.

Stationary bike ride before work for an hour, where I had a decent first half but couldn't maintain the output in the second half.  It was definitely a cardio workout, as my heartrate was hovering around 160 bpm for most of the second half, and I was sweating pretty good.

04-09-2016 Ride

Ride with Jim on the day after returning from Israel.  I didn't feel too many effects of jet lag, but I was slow from not riding and from keeping my pace so as to stay connected with Jim.  We headed through the neighborhood to RB Rd and then over Dove Canyon Rd to Carmel Valley Rd.  Took it to Del Mar Heights Rd.  This road had some familiar ups and downs, including the short steep section just after the freeway.  Down to the 101 for a short section down to Carmel Valley Rd, then back to El Camino Real and the 56 bike trail.  Up to Carmel Valley Rd, where we pretty much retraced our route back to Jim's house and then home for me.

04-06-2016 Run

Solo run in the morning before work while visiting Israel and staying in Rehovot.  My pace was significantly slower than the previous day's, so I need to build up my stamina for high output workouts on successive days.  Headed to the site and then got onto Ha Hadarim St that heads north into the business park and neighborhood just north of the site.  Turned left on Ben Gurion St and ran over to Weizman St, which has a pretty nice running path on its east side.  Back to HaMada St, heading east to Prof A D Bergman St and turning right there.  To the roundabout and then right to head back toward the hotel.

04-05-2016 Run

Solo run in the morning while staying at the Leonardo Boutique Hotel in Rehovot.  I headed out toward HP Indigo and then turned right on HaMada St, which turns into Derech Menachem Begin.  It was overcast and a little chilly, good weather for running.  I run all the way to the stoplight by where the cluster of high-rise apartment buildings is located, and then I turned around an retraced my route.  A little faster pace than my last run.

04-01-2016 Run

Run while staying at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Tel Aviv.  I headed south along the beach path, going down a little past the Manta Ray Restaurant before turning around an retracing my route.  It wasn't particularly fast.  I had really irritated my right eye the previous day by using the wrong contact lens solution, so I ran while wearing my glasses.  Later, my eye felt good enough to put my contact lens back in.
