Solo ride over to Gideon's house the normal way, where I found that he overslept and was joining later. So I rode over to the 4S Target starting point, where there were a total of 14 riders: Ray, Jed, Perse and his wife Lovely, Eric (Charlie's friend), Charlie, James, Darnell, Gideon, Oggi, Kamal, Cam, and Irwin. Perse, Lovely, Irwin, Eric, and Oggi rode a shorter route. We all headed out Camino del Sur to the 56 bike path, taking it down to El Camino Real. Then it was over Carmel Valley Rd to the Coast Hwy. On the small climb up into Del Mar, I kept a good pace and finished at the front of the smaller group. We rode all the way up to La Costa Ave, pausing there briefly before turning inland. I held back to make sure James made the turn, so I ended up going solo to the rest point at a gas station near the corner of La Costa Ave and El Camino Real. Longer break there than I would have preferred, then we headed up to Rancho Santa Fe Rd. I got out ahead on this climb and was first to the light, where we turned left (Darnell missed the turn and got behind us). Gradual climb up and down to San Elijo Rd, turning there and riding into San Elijo Hills, where I was first into the village. At this point, I, Charlie, Darnell, and James turned onto Elfin Forerst Rd while the others rode up to Double Peak (again). Back into Escondido, benefitting from a steady tailwind pushing us up Harmony Grove Rd. James and Darnell were feeling the effects of the ride and slowing down. The weather was just about ideal for a ride on this day. We rode over to Valley Pkwy and took it into town, turning right onto Quince St and using this to get to 13th Ave and thus to Centre City Pkwy. I was still feeling strong and riding ahead of the others. From there, it was the normal way across the freeway and onto W Bernardo Dr. Couldn't maintain 10 mph on the last climbs, my legs were working but I didn't have enough reserves left. Up to RB Rd, turning right and heading back to the starting point the normal way. James and Darnell were real troopers, pushing through soreness and tiredness to make it to the end. Home via the RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr route, legs didn't cramp up, but I was really tired at the end of this ride. This was a pretty good day for me on the bike, a long distance where I kept my output level consistently high.
Avg speed = 17.1 mph. Total mileage = 61.7 mi
