05-30-2015 Ride

Solo ride over to John's house, following the normal route and taking a relatively slow pace.  It was foggy for much of the ride over.  I did work to keep my pace above 10 mph on the last little hill, and it was fairly easy.  We headed over to Scripps-Poway Pkwy, but my ride up the first part was not stellar.  On the last climb up to the 67, I was able to keep my pace above 9 mph for the whole time, and my heartrate was still in the 160s.  Near the top, I got above the clouds, and we rode in sunlight for a while.  One more effort to climb the first hill up to Poway Rd on the 67 above 10 mph, and it was successful.  These efforts took a lot out of me.  Down toward Ramona and then another fairly strong push on Highland Valley Rd up to the top, then coasting down without any difficulties.  As we came down the hill, we rode back into fog and overcast.  My legs were tired by this time, so I dialed back the effort as we rode over to Pomerado Rd and back toward John's house.  I didn't think I had it in me to ride nearly 60 mi, so I ended up turning right on Ted Williams Pkwy and heading home, mostly following the new time trial route after I got to Rancho Carmel Dr, other than turning on Carmel Mountain Rd and going by Home Depot.  It was pretty slow going at the end, as my legs were telling me they were pretty much done.  Felt fine at the end, no cramping or tightening, and more tiredness than soreness.

05-28-2015 Ride

Solo ride after work. heading through the neighborhood to RB Rd and then toward work on Via del Campo.  From there, I followed the new time trial route in reverse over to Poway Rd and then to Oak Knoll Rd, back onto Pomerado Rd and again tracing the reverse of the new time trial route.  The wind was at my back on the sections heading west and, to a lesser extent, on the sections heading south.  Decent pace but not great.

05-25-2015 Ride

Solo ride on Memorial Day, couldn't get anybody else to ride with me.  It was cloudy when I started, heading through the neighborhood to RB Rd and out to Camino del Sur.  The temperature was nice as I rode to San Dieguito Rd and down into Fairbanks Ranch.  Over to El Apajo and Via de Santa Fe to Calzada del Bosque, getting over to Via del Valle.  At this point in the ride, it started to sprinkle, then drizzle pretty steadily.  The road wasn't too wet, but it was a little chilly.  I also wasn't feeling that strong, my legs suffering some from the previous day's 10k run.  I rode down to the coast and headed south toward Del Mar, taking the turnoff that goes by the park and the ocean before getting back onto PCH.  I took Carmel Valley Rd to El Camino Real and then got onto the 56 bike trail.  The drizzle was off and on at this point.  Rode up to Camino del Sur, with no real push in my legs to speak of.  I stopped and had a granola bar before heading toward home on Camino del Sur.  Here is where it really started to rain in earnest, and it lasted until I got up to Paseo del Sur, taking it through the Del Sur neighborhood and into 4S Ranch area.  I got back onto RB Rd and rode, slowly to the crest before dropping down to W Bernardo Dr.  For an extra mile or so, I continued on to Bernardo Center Dr before turning left and heading home the normal way from here.  It was pretty dry in RB, and this ride tired me out.

05-24-2015 Run

Solo run in the morning while staying at Fellowship Camp in Wrightwood.  I had ridden with Dave Little on the previous day but my legs were feeling fine.  I headed down to Linnet Rd and then east to Lone Pine Canyon Rd for a short time until I got onto Thrush Rd until I got to Sheep Creek Dr.  At this point, the route started to climb.  I turned on Lone Pine Canyon Rd again and headed out through Pinon Hills for about a mile and a half, then the road headed downhill.  I took it down for about 0.7 mi before stopping and turning around to run back up.  It was a real challenging stretch.  I stayed on Lone Pine Canyon Rd back to Heath Creek Dr, taking it back to Thrush Rd and staying on this road until Oak St, which I used to get over to Linnet Rd.  From there I retraced my route.  The last stretch was uphill for about a mile at an average 5% grade, and I was really slow in a couple of places but finished strong.  This was the first time in a very long time that I ran more than 6 miles.

05-23-2015 Ride

Ride with Dave Little while staying at Camp Wrightwood for Fellowship Camp.  We headed down to Hwy 2 and then west, riding up to Big Pines basically together.  I would get out a little bit ahead of Dave, then pause until he caught up with me.  We decided to take a right at the Y and ride on the N4 road.  This road heads generally downhill toward Palmdale, and we stayed on it until we had put in a little over 10 miles.  The route took us past a number of different campgrounds, and the weather was pretty good.  We were riding generally into the wind on the way out and had a tailwind on the way back.  The climb back to Big Pines was about 6 miles at 4.5% average grade, with the toughest section near the end.  From there, it was a fast run back into town and then the challenge of climbing back to camp.  Felt good at the end, no significant back pain on the long climbs, where I moderated my pace somewhat to stay close to Dave.

05-20-2015 Run

Solo run over lunch from work, going out the main entrance and taking the trapezoidal route in the clockwise direction.  I had good splits for my first two miles, which are both generally downhill.  Then I slowed down for the run back to work, but my overall time was still decent.  There were some sections during this run where I felt like I knew what I was doing out there.

In the evening, I put new tires, Continental Gatorskins, on my bike.

05-18-2015 Run

Run in the evening after work and before eating dinner, while Ann went to Zumba.  Standard course up to the point when I got to the intersection by W Bernardo Dr and Duenda Rd, where I ran over to CVS and picked up a gift card for Richard Bright and some thank-you notes.  Then I finished off the run.  My splits for the first and last sections were pretty good, but I felt slow running up W Bernardo Dr.

05-17-2015 Ride

Time trial ride with John.  I started out kinda slow and rode at John's pace as we got to the top of the gradual climb by the hospital.  On the generally downhill section to Poway Rd, we rode together and made good time, similarly on the Poway Rd section.  I went up Sabre Springs Pkwy at a steady pace, then we rode together for much of the section up Rancho Carmel Dr, with me getting some separation  before Carmel Mountain Rd and then by the post office.  I had a pretty good rest of the ride from there.  Finished in 1:00:17, which was faster than I would have figured.

05-16-2015 Ride

Solo ride in the morning, couldn't get anybody else to come along.  It had been raining for the last couple of days, but things looked okay when I started out.  Headed out toward Escondido and then up BVP, keeping a pretty good pace.  I took it all the way to Valley Pkwy and then to Valley Center Rd.  Hadn't been up this way in a while, and I also hadn't done any longer climbs either.  Good start on this climb, only slowing down past the turn where it gets steeper.  I was slow for this section but sped up after the next little curve where the incline decreases.  Down toward Valley Center, turning right on Woods Valley Rd and benefiting from a tailwind.  At this point, the weather clouded over and it started to cool down.  I had a decent ride up to Lake Wohlford Rd and then over to the village.  Down the grade, I was riding into the wind and was able to make it down without really having to use the brakes, just a couple of touches.  Over to El Norte Pkwy, which I took to Woodland Pkwy and over to Barham Dr.  Rode to Mission Rd and then on in to Escondido, following the normal path via Tulip to Valley Pkwy to Quince, and then home via the standard Centre City Pkwy route.  I felt fine on the last two little climbs.

05-11-2015 Run

Run  with Evgeny over lunch, taking the trapezoidal route out to Camino San Bernardo via RB Rd and back.  We started out at our normal pace, maybe a little faster, but were making good time and stepped up the effort, particularly on the gradual climb up Camino del Sur.  Finished at the light by the first entrance to the campus and walked the rest of the way back.  It was a very fast time for Evgeny.

05-10-2015 Ride

Solo ride on Mother's Day, riding down by the park and then up Pomerado Rd.  My right knee was a little sore, no pain but just a little stiffness, so I kept the pace moderate.  I intended to ride up to the top of Pomerado Rd but got a flat at the bottom of this hill.  When I went to replace the tube, I saw that my rear tire was worn all the way to the fiber, so I turned around at that point and rode home nice and easy.  I followed Pomerado Rd back to RB Rd, then home via Duenda Rd.  I felt fine on the ride even with the relatively low exertion.

05-09-2015 Ride

First bike ride in a while, riding from home with John.  I chose a route that was relatively flat, heading out initially through the neighborhood to RB Rd, then over to Camino del Sur.  I felt okay during the ride, pretty good on the cardio side with the fairly regular running I put in while we were in Houston.  Need to build leg strength and stamina back up.  Out to the 56 bike trail, taking it down to El Camino Real.  Then we headed up into Del Mar Heights and down to San Dieguito Rd.  Took this back to Camino del Sur, staying on Camino del Norte up to Camino San Bernardo.  Normal route home from there via W Bernardo Dr.

05-07-2015 Run

Run in the morning before work.  It was lightly drizzling when I started, which was refreshing but made me extra cautious about slippery pavement, especially on the downhills.  I felt just a little stronger on the climbs in this run, not as worn out at the top of the climbs, and I finished 10 sec faster than my previous run on Monday.

05-04-2015 Run

Run in the evening after work.  Ann was going to an exercise class, so it motivated me to go out as well.  I had a decent pace but about halfway into the ride my GPS tracker stopped tracking, so I wasn't getting the usual mileage and split time updates.  Since it was light, I was able to run faster on the downhill sections, and I had a pretty strong finish.
