Inaugural ride on my new bike. I was able to get the batteries charged enough to run the shifters and test them out. Put about 80 psi of air into the tires to see how it felt, and I installed my pedals on the bike. Also put my saddle bag on, it was a tight fit with the aero seat post. Then it was ready to go, even though I still don't have a holder for my Wahoo, which I carried in my back pocket.
Headed through the neighborhood to RB Rd, then through the 4S Ranch neighborhood all the way up Alva Rd and past the road to the water tower. Back over to Four Gee Rd, staying on it as it turned into Paseo Del Sur and riding through that neighborhood as well. At the light to get onto Camino del Sur, Aaron Holdaway pulled up beside me, as he was taking a short riding break. We didn't stay together too long, as I continued on Camino del Sur while he turned left shortly afterward. This bike feels pretty responsive all around, and it feels like it is measurably more efficient at translating my power into bike speed. The shifting is seamless, and the pattern will take a little getting used to. The braking is much stronger, it is easy to lock up the tires, so I will need to adjust to the new capability. I took Camino del Sur down to near its end, where it now connects with Park Village Rd. This route has a 1-mile uphill stretch, not too steep, and the bike just sailed up this grade. Also felt decent on the steeper stretch on Black Mountain Rd to get to the 56 bike path, where I tested out some of the lower gears. Turned east there and took it all the way to Rancho Carmel Dr. That little climb just past Rancho Penasquitos Blvd was pretty easy on this bike, probably helped out by the tailwind out of the west. From this point, I stayed on the time trial route, other than turning right onto Carmel Mountain Rd to avoid waiting at the light. Not attempting to set any speed records but feeling comfortable at a decent pace. It was over 90 deg when I got home, but I didn't notice the heat too much.
Avg speed = 16.1 mph. Total mileage = 25.6 mi
Avg power = 137 W. Weighted avg power = 173 W
Total elevation gain = 1650'
Avg heartrate = 126 bpm
Later on, Ann, Emily, and I went to the contemporary worship service at St Bartholomew's Church in Poway, after having had Thai food for dinner.
