08-29-2023 Entry

Finished the book Doom by Niall Ferguson.  Premise is an overview of disasters that have befallen mankind in the course of recorded history, including pandemics, wars, political dangers, natural disasters, etc.  He spent some time reflecting on the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, taking something of a conservative approach to its effects and government reactions.  Had a lot of good things to say about the democratic government in Taiwan and how they have handled the pandemic.  Obviously wasn't in favor of universal lockdowns and restrictions on mobility.  Started re-reading the book A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute, which I must have read in the past but didn't remember the beginning.

Ann is going in for her colonoscopy today, hoping all goes well.

Went for a morning swim, mixing it up with half of the time using swim pads and half of the time using the snorkel.  My stroke seemed a little more even when I was swimming without the snorkel, compared to the previous day.  Swam for a total of 80 lengths of the pool, divided into 20-length sections with different conditions.  Finished in about 50 minutes, and my arms were feeling the effects afterwards.
