Ride over to Robert's house the normal way, where I met up with him and David, and we rode together to the 4S Target to meet the others. Big group at the start, here are the names I remembered - Ray, Robert, David, Chris, Eric, Jamil, Kamal, Jed, Sammy, Tony, Nestor, Fritz, Levi, James, Charlie, and Irwin. Out Camino del Sur to the 56 bike path, where we lost James for a while as he repaired a flat and was stuck behind. Then down to El Camino Real at a pretty fast pace, including David showing off his impressive TT power on the little stretch before Carmel Valley Rd. Over to Carmel Valley Rd, and around this time Irwin headed back. We rode over to the coast and turned north on PCH. Chris and I pushed to be the first up that little climb, and I eventually had a little more left (or he let me go ahead). Then it was on PCH all the way to the La Costa Ave turnaround point, with a couple of brief stops on the way. I kept missing the drop for small groups getting out in front, which led to me on a solo push to try and catch them. Eventually I got up there, past Cardiff, and we had something of a fast, ill-organized pace line going with a couple of other riders. The wind was coming from the northwest, so it slowed our pace down. At the turn, we still hadn't caught up with James, and Jamil let Kamal know that he had missed a turn and started heading back. Back on PCH to the 7-Eleven where we have stopped before, for a longer break, including several riders that ate hot dogs. Yikes. And James and Rush showed up while we were there. Back to Via de la Valle, where we turned left and waited for the others to regroup. I was at the back when they took off, so trying to catch them up again was not fun, especially after missing a long light by the fairgrounds. Over to El Camino Real, where it was getting hotter and I was starting to feel the effects of the effort so far. We had favorable winds to generally help on the San Dieguito Rd flats, but once again I had to ride it mostly solo. So my ride up the Three Witches climb was okay but not fast, and I was slow on the third segment. Another regroup at the turn onto Camino del Sur, but we didn't wait for everybody before finishing it off. At this point, a group got out in front of me and I just didn't have anything in response to try and catch up, so it was another solo effort to get back to the starting point. Slower, but no cramping, on the way home, taking RB Rd down to W Bernardo Dr and home the normal way from there. I had pretty much nothing left on the tiny little climb up Duenda Rd, was a big workout for me on this day. I thought I tracked it on Fitbit, but it didn't register the ride.
