08-20-2022 Ride

Solo ride to Rob's house, first ride tracking my power.  We met up and then picked up Gideon on the way to the 4S Target, taking the route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood.  On this ride, there were: Ray, Perse, Arnold, Andy, Gideon, Robert, Sammy, Tony, Nestor, Jhonar, Kamal, Jamil, Charlie, Rory, Fritz, and Jed.  Out Camino del Sur to San Dieguito Rd, with Jamil putting in a big effort to pass everybody on the little climb before the turn.  Down the hill and right on El Apajo, riding over to Via de la Valle, did okay on the little climb up to Stud Loop.  On that section, Rory and I got out in front and built up a decent gap, I caught and passed him near the end, and others were closing in on us.  We headed to Montevideo and then took Lago Vista to El Camino del Norte.  Nice clustered riding on the downhill section, turning right on Rancho Santa Fe Rd and riding over to Olivenhain Rd, then El Camino Real to get to La Costa Ave.  A couple of riders kept going, so there was a delay in getting everybody back together at that corner.  I was last in line, and a group of us rode in pace line at a pretty good speed on that stretch before the freeway.  Followed the road to the coast highway, turning left and stopping at the 7-Eleven for a break.  Then it was down the coast back to Via de la Valle, with some fairly fast stretches but me taking a pace to try and save something for the end.  Up to El Camino Real, with a stretch where Ray and Rory got out ahead and I had to work quite a bit to catch up to them.  Back to San Dieguito Rd, where we loosely formed back up, with a lead group of me, Ray, Jed, and Rory getting out in a pace line and putting distance on the others.  Several other groups worked to catch up, including one with Fritz, Gideon, Perse, and Sammy, and they sprung Sammy up to and past us, but that broke our pace line up.  Rest at the service station before taking on the Three Witches climb.  I was doing pretty well on the first of the two climbs, trying to match Ray's pace.  But he got out ahead, along with Rory, and I couldn't close the gap on the last climb.  Just didn't have that extra gear on this day, although my legs were holding steady.  Nestor came out of nowhere and blew everybody away on that stretch of the climb, really impressive.  I closed the gap to Ray on the way back to Camino del Sur, and the four of us, after waiting a little bit, decided to finish it off.  We rode basically together until Paseo del Sur, then Rory had more left in the tank than the others and rode away.  I couldn't keep up with him, but I put pace on the other two and had a decent, although not great, finish.  When I stood up on the pedals in this stretch, I could feel my quads complaining, but they were fine in sitting position.  After a short break at the end, Rob and I rode back together, I didn't push the pace too much, not that much left with which to push.  Legs were still okay at the end, just tired.
