04-15-2025 Ride

Was a pretty good day, with one minor glitch. I woke up and had a little breakfast while I cleaned the kitchen, then I got ready for a bike ride, along with a drive up to San Clemente with Ann to meet Pat. The drive up there was uneventful other than a real traffic jam on the I-15/78 interchange than I ended up avoiding by getting on Mission Ave and bypassing it. Traffic on the 78 picked up after I got on it, and the rest of the way it was smooth sailing. I had inadvertently turned my mobile data off on my phone, which was a minor annoyance that was easily fixed once we got to the San Clemente Pier parking lot. He showed up a little after we did, which was good because we were running a little late due to the traffic jam. I won't attempt to map out the roads we took. Pat was leading based on a route that he copied from somebody else. We never got too lost. We did end up riding up to two of the tallest points in the area, with water towers located there to indicate the significance of their altitude. I was able to put a little distance on Pat on the steeper climbs but not so much. We are in about the same shape for this kind of ride. Lots of climbing in the first half, more downhills in the second half, which took us down to the San Juan Creek trail and then to Dana Point Harbor, where we stopped for a brief bathroom break before getting on paths running alongside PCH. Back to San Clemente, taking a maze of surface streets (was glad I had my Wahoo guiding me) back to the parking lot. Legs held up pretty well, given that I haven't ridden nearly as much as the last time I rode with Pat.

Avg speed = 13.9 mph (13.9 mph). Total mileage = 33.0 mi
Avg power = 138 W. Weighted avg power = 177 W
Total elevation gain = 3020' (3180')
Avg heartrate = 122 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 58 (62)
Training Load = 165
Intensity = 80%

After the ride, we drove into San Clemente village and had lunch at Sonny's, a place that Charlie and Leslie turned us on to. Food was decent, conversation was better. We talked about going to Europe in the fall to ride bikes, do some sightseeing and wine-tasting. Pat is ready to go, so we will start planning it out, including Mark and Karmi, who are also in on it. Drive home was fine, no traffic. I took care of some easy tasks when I got home, had a short nap in the afternoon, and read quite a bit. Then I talked to Ross and Ben about the concept of moving the caregivers' hours for Mom from 10 down to 8, still 5 days a week. I think we are now all aligned on the concept and how to respond when Mom brings it up again. In the evening, I watched some basketball and ate a light dinner.
