08-31-2025 Ride

Woke up around 5:30, slept pretty well after the Bisikleta party. I got ready for a bike ride to get some elevation in, drove (after getting some gas) the Sportage down to Carmel Valley Rd by the coast. I unloaded my stuff and then rode up to PCH. Was foggy while I was driving there but just overcast when I got there. I ended up doing 12 times up the inner route of Torrey Pines. First couple of times went pretty quickly, it was still cool and relatively quiet on the climb. As the climbs continued, it got warmer and I generally slowed down. I saw Jed starting his workout on my fourth time up, didn't pause too long after I saw him but waited for him at the top to take a picture and chat briefly. We didn't ride together, and I didn't see him for the rest of the ride. I talked myself into adding a couple of extra laps at the end to get to 5000' of elevation gain, and those last two laps were noticeably slower than the others. It was warming up, and the crowds were building. I was ready to be done after the 12th time up, was pretty slow on the return to the car, and my legs were feeling the effects of the climbing. But I recovered pretty quickly, I think.

Avg speed = 13.8 mph. Total mileage = 44.6 mi
Avg power = 144 W. Weighted avg power = 188 W
Total elevation gain = 5130'
Avg heartrate = 126 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 108
Training Load = 239
Intensity = 85%

Should have eaten more during the ride, I didn't bring anything other than water, and I was feeling pretty hungry by the end. Drove home a goofy way, taking VdlV and SDR, so I was slower getting home than I should have been. Started arranging my stuff for the trip, had some potato salad and cheese for lunch, then drove over to Bear Roots Tavern in Escondido to meet Joe for a beer and give him back his bear canister. I told him about the backpacking trip, and he was excited to hear the details. On the way home, I talked to Ben and gave him an update on the car purchase information that I got from Ross yesterday. I cleaned the kitchen and then gave Mom a call to let her know general details of the trip. She was in a mild funk but didn't get too maudlin. Wants Ross to clean his crap out of the garage, so I'll bring that up with him when I talk to him after the trip. After dinner, I packed my stuff into the backpack and got it all lined up. Had a quiet evening and early turn-in time.

Measured distances from crank and bottom of pedal stroke to the top of the saddle: 74 and 90 cm, respectively.
