07-30-2023 Ride

Ride with John, Dave was supposed to go as well but didn't have a good night.  We headed down by the park and then up Pomerado Rd to RB Rd.  I slowed down my pace to stay a little closer to him during this ride, particularly in the latter half, when we were much closer on average speed.  Left on RB Rd and then up to Espola Rd, by the high school, and eventually up to Poway Rd, taking that little climb that's always tough, me riding slowly this time.  Down all the way to Sabre Springs Pkwy, so we followed the old time trial route for a good bit.  After the right turn there, we were on the new time trial route and stayed on it all the way home, except for coming down Azucar Way to get to the house.  Felt fine on the ride, legs were tired from the previous day.

07-29-2023 Ride

Solo ride over to the 4S Target, taking the long route up by the water tank in 4S Ranch.  On this ride, there were, at the start: Fritz, Jed, Darnell, Perse, Arnold, Robert, and Gio.  It was a standard route for us, down Camino del Sur to San Dieguito Rd and to the coast via Via de la Valle.  Pace line on the flats worked pretty well, and nobody was attacking too much, just a pretty brisk pace, with me leading out a fair amount until we got to the coast, then it was more of a rotating lead.  Fast heading through Cardiff, I was able to keep up with the people setting the pace this time.  Then Arnold and Fritz got out ahead of us, and Rob and I couldn't catch up until we got into Encinitas.  Before then, Perse turned around and headed back.  Past there, we set a fast pace to La Costa Ave, where we took a break, and Rob and I turned around and retraced our route.  It was fast but not screaming fast.  After riding through the flats, we stopped at the gas station before Three Witches and talked with Tony and his friends, who were on mountain bikes.  Not so fast up that climb, as it was starting to get hot and I didn't want to overdo it.  Then it was back to the starting point without incident, where I paused briefly before riding back home.  On the ride back, I took RB Rd down to W Bernardo Dr, and then down to Aguamiel Rd.  The last little climb up to the house was short but tough.  When I looked at my average speed for this ride, it was surprisingly high.  I don't think my Wahoo was reporting the right average speed during the ride.  But my average heartrate was higher than usual, probably due to the effort and the temperature.

07-27-2023 Ride

Ride, last one as an HP employee, with Blair from the back parking lot, after having ridden in to work on a day that turned out to be warm but not too hot.  We headed out Bernardo Center Dr to Carmel Valley Rd, taking the downhill and then climbing back up to Black Mountain Rd.  I dialed my pace back due to the heat, and for most of this ride Blair and I were at the same pace.  Then it was down to Camino del Sur, turning right there and taking it back to Paseo del Sur.  The wind was blowing from the west, and it helped on the little climbs on the way back.  Right on Paseo del Sur, then another right onto Haarland Glen, taking it to Paseo Montenero and then to Kristen Glen, which brought us back to Paseo del Sur.  We stayed on it until it turned into Four Gee Rd, then we rode the reverse of the longer route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood, up by the water tank but not climbing up that road.  Over, via Alva Rd, to RB Rd, then down the hill to Cork & Craft, where we stopped in and met Jerry, Pedro, Guangjin, Paul T., and Julio for a beer.  Good times.  Back to the starting point using Via Tazon and W Bernardo Ct to get to W Bernardo Dr for the last little climb.  I rode home the normal way after we got to the starting point.  Was a nice ride to help put some closure to my last days at HP.

07-23-2023 Ride

Solo ride over to Dave's house, taking the freeway and then the route behind the mall.  I met up with him, John, and Jim, and we did the extended time trial route, with the section on Buena Creek Rd.  Legs felt the effects of the previous day's ride, but I felt decent on the little climb up to Deer Springs Rd and then on the Buena Creek Rd stretch, where I pushed the climb and the downhill section as well.  After that, I generally slowed my pace, and the others were slowing down as well, especially Jim.  I tried to stay with him on the last section on Centre City Pkwy, he was going slow.  Temperature was decent on this ride, but the humidity was higher than usual.

07-22-2023 Ride

Solo ride over to Rob's place, taking the time trial starting route over to Bernardo Center Dr and then up Bernardo Heights Pkwy to Paseo Lucido.  I met him there, and we loaded our bikes into his car and headed down to Shelter Island, the parking lot by Humphrey's, where we met up with other Bisikleta riders: Rob, Perse, Kamal, Fritz, Omar, Gideon, Charlie, and Sassan.  We headed over Scott St to Harbor Dr, then turned left onto Nimitz Blvd, taking it over to the San Diego River Bikeway, where we headed west until we got into Ocean Beach.  Followed a series of surface streets and turns until we got to Hill St, where we turned and climbed up to Tarento Dr.  This is a really steep climb, over 15% at times.  Sassan was out in front, and I couldn't keep up with his pace, but I didn't lose sight of him.  We gathered at the top, then took Tarento Dr over to Dupont St and then onto Catalina Blvd.  Turned there and kept on it as it turned into Cabrillo Memorial Dr, past Fort Rosecrans and up to the entrance to Cabrillo National Monument.  Brief rest there before turning around and riding back the way we came.  It seemed like more climbing on the way there than downhill on the return.  We eventually turned off on Canon St and took this nice, more gradual downhill all the way back to Scott St. turning left there and staying on Harbor Dr.  We rode this road past Spanish Landing (bathroom break) and continued on into the city, eventually riding, slowly, through the crowds by Comic Con, where some but not a lot of people were dressed up in Cosplay style.  Some rough roads heading out, but then the bike lanes cleared up as we followed the path of the Bayshore Bikeway.  Another brief rest by the small park where the Russian oligarch's yacht is impounded before continuing on via surface streets and the Bikeway, past western Chula Vista and then to Imperial Beach, where the Bikeway swung west and followed the bottom curve of the bay before turning north and running along Silver Strand Blvd.  At some point near here, Omar split off and rode home, while the rest of us continued.  Around that turn, Kamal and Fritz took off and I worked pretty hard to catch up to them.  Kamal was a beast here, leading out for long stretches at a grueling pace.  Most of the rest of us hung on, with me, Fritz, and Perse taking shorter turns in the lead.  We rode back to Coronado, following the path leading under the bridge and to the park next to it for another break.  From there, we rode to the ferry landing and took it over to the Convention Center landing, getting off there and slowly winding our way through the crowds on the paths, lots of people there.  We got through most of them, Charlie and I getting separated from the others and then reunited.  I led out for much of the next stretch on the walking paths, not great for cycling, following them back parallel to Harbor Drive until we were able to cross under the bridge and then get onto it to ride over the bay.  We retraced our route to Scott St and then to Shelter Island Dr to finish up.  This was a different kind of ride, very flat except for a couple of sections, and alternately fast and slow on the flats, due to crowd conditions.

07-20-2023 Ride

Solo ride in the afternoon after work, leaving from the back parking lot.  I headed over to Via del Campo, it was 87 deg at the start and felt hot for most of the ride.  Over to RB Rd, then through the 4S Ranch neighborhood to Four Gee Rd and then to Paseo del Sur.  Over and down to Camino del Sur, following it to Carmel Valley Rd, where I turned right and took it to the 56 bike path.  I was hoping that I would have a tailwind on the way back, but the wind was swirling during this ride.  Stayed on the bike path up to (slowly) and past Black Mountain Rd to the turnoff at Salmon River Rd.  Over to Paseo Montalban and then to Black Mountain Rd.  Around here is where my Wahoo ran out of battery, so I only have my Fitbit route for the full ride.  Rode over to Carmel Valley Rd, again the heat was noticeable on this little climb to the top, and it was a fast descent, followed by a slow climb back to Camino del Norte.  Then back to the starting point.  Some days, I don't have a lot of push or desire to ride harder, and this was one of those days.

07-16-2023 Ride

Solo ride on a Sunday morning, getting going fairly early to avoid the heat.  Headed through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd, then over to W Bernardo Dr to get to RB Rd.  Over to Bernardo Center Dr, turning right and then left onto Lomica Dr to ride through that neighborhood over to Pomerado Rd.  I wasn't pushing the pace too much on this ride, taking it more easy on the climbs.  I stayed on Pomerado Rd all the way to the top and a little beyond on Spring Canyon Rd as it kept climbing.  This the first time in a while that I did this climb, and it was as tough as usual.  I could feel the previous day's workout in my legs for sure.  Rode back to Cypress Canyon Park Rd and took it over to Angelique St, riding down to Springbrook Dr and then down, a fun downhill, to Sabre Springs Pkwy.  Followed the time trial route for a bit before turning off and stopping at Krispy Kreme for a couple of donuts.  While I was eating them, I think some guys in front of the store were making a drug deal.  A little scary, so I didn't dawdle.  Then it was onto Carmel Mountain Rd to get to Camino del Norte and back onto the time trial route for the rest of the ride, with the exception of coming home via Azucar Way.  Later on, I went for a swim, starting to work on mixing multiple exercise sessions into single days.

07-15-2023 Ride

A pretty good day on the bike.  I rode solo through the neighborhood and up to Dove Canyon Rd, turning left and taking it over to Carmel Valley Rd.  Up and over the two little climbs, conserving my energy, then down to Camino del Sur.  Left there and over to the parking lot by Peet's Coffee, including a wrong turn at the light before I was supposed to turn.  There, I met up with the Bisikleta riders for this day: Ray, Perse, Gideon, Rob, Kamal, Charlie, Jed, Fritz, Cam, Gio, and Omar (Kamal's friend who has just started riding).  Omar left ahead of us, and we headed over to the 56 bike path, where he turned the wrong way and Kamal and Fritz chased after him.  Ray met up with a friend Amir (from Israel), so he was behind us on the way to the coast.  I was intending to keep from leading the riders on this day, just staying near the front.  Down to El Camino Real, a group was out front and pushing the pace, but we caught up with them before Carmel Valley Rd.  Then it was over to the Coast Hwy on Carmel Valley Rd, turning left there (at Kamal's suggestion) and riding up the outside route of Torrey Pines Rd.  By this time, another rider Dan was riding with us, and he pushed a mean pace up this climb.  I tried to hold onto his wheel for as long as I could, but he outpaced me.  I was first to the top, with Jed right behind me, and I had a pretty good effort here, setting a PR (7:52) that is only a little slower than Ray's and Audrey's times, which I think I can beat.  Then it was down the hill (bike ran smoothly) and up into Del Mar, again not trying to stay with Dan and Fritz out in front.  Good steady pace, staying near the front, to La Costa Ave, where we met up with Ray and Amir.  We only rode with Amir a little bit because he had to get back by 11:00.  We continued on, riding up to Breakwater Rd before turning around.  Then it was back to the 7-Eleven for a break.  Omar rolled in during the break, and soon after we started back, retracing our route without the Torrey Pines sidetrack.  I was still feeling good, sun wasn't out yet, so I led the way for much of the stretch over to the 56 bike path and up to Carmel Valley Rd.  There, I got too far into the curb and hit it hard, flatting my rear tire.  After a quick change, we continued on, with a loose pace line that soon fell apart, with me, Jed, and Rob out in front.  Eventually, Rob dropped back, and Jed and I matched pace back to Camino del Sur.  After a quick stop at the group starting point, I headed home via the Carmel Valley Rd route, and the sun was out by now.  The climb up to the top past Black Mountain Rd was challenging but not awful, and the downhill was fun.  Similarly for Dove Canyon Rd, kinda slow going up this last significant climb.  I took RB Rd back to W Bernardo Dr and the normal route home from there.  Legs were letting me know it was time to stop near the end, but they held up well.  Feeling in pretty good shape.

07-13-2023 Ride

Ride with Blair from the back parking lot at work, heading out Bernardo Center Dr to Camino del Norte and turning right.  It was definitely warm and dry, and the wind was a factor as well, coming generally from the southwest.  We rode out to San Dieguito Rd, and I got ahead of Blair and made the turn while he didn't.  I waited for him at the top of Three Witches, but when he didn't show up I rode back to the intersection and saw him coming back.  Turned around and we rode down into Fairbanks Ranch, continuing into the flats.  I thought I knew where to turn according to his route but was wrong, so we ended up riding farther on the flats and then turning around to get back to Rancho Diegueno Rd, where we turned right and rode up a pretty steep (>10%) 0.6 mile climb to get to Rancho Santa Fe Farms Rd, turning right there and dropping down before another steeper, shorter climb to head over to Carmel Valley Rd.  We turned left and took it all the way back to Bernardo Center Dr.  That involved a 2 mile climb to the top just after Black Mountain Rd, followed by the downhill to Dove Canyon Rd and then the last climb up to Camino del Norte.  Back to the site from there.  This route was more challenging than our normal ones, but I felt fine at the end, kept fairly hydrated during the ride.

07-08-2023 Ride

Solo ride through the neighborhood over to the 4S Ranch neighborhood, where I went all the way up by the water tower turnoff (but not up that road) before coming back down to Ralphs Ranch Rd and then heading over to Four Gee Rd, taking it to its end and then turning around.  Up Paseo del Sur to Del Sur Ridge Rd and over to Garretson Rd to get to the starting point at the 4S Target.  On this ride there were: Fritz, Arnold, Ray, Nel, Aaron, Robert, and Jed.  Kamal and his friend Omar were at the start but didn't begin with us, having to fix a flat tire instead.  We headed out the normal way to El Apajo, I was in front with Fritz on the CdS bump, and several riders really screamed down the hill.  Over and up to Stud Loop, where Aaron was super fast on the little climb on Via de la Valle and I kept ahead of the rest of the pack.  Was first through the Loop, it was me catching Jed and riding with him until I pulled away.  We headed over to El Montevideo and took it to San Elijo Rd, turning left and, after a gradual uphill, enjoying a long downhill that caused four of us - me, Jed, Aaron, and Arnold - to miss a turn on the route.  So we jogged over to Rambla de Las Flores and took it up to Linea del Cielo while I texted the group to meet us at that intersection.  First up the short, steep little climb at the end, with Jed not far behind.  Then we all gathered together and headed to Lomas Santa Fe and down to the Coast Hwy.  From there, it was left up into Del Mar, where Fritz got out ahead on the climb into the village and I put in a max effort charge to catch and pass him.  Then it was a more modest pace up to the turn onto Carmel Valley Rd where I turned left to get back home in time to attend the memorial service for Mary Anne Dijak's mom.  I dialed my pace back somewhat here, riding over the the 56 bike path and taking it up to Carmel Valley Rd.  Stayed on it all the way up and over the crest by Black Mountain Rd and down to Dove Canyon Rd, where I turned and rode up to RB Rd.  From there, I rode back the normal way through the neighborhood.  Felt good on this ride, lots of residual power to attack near the end of the little climbs.  Heartrate was higher, I think it's in part due to riding the last half of the ride in the sun, with higher temperatures to deal with.  Legs were very tired in the afternoon.

07-06-2023 Ride

Ride in the afternoon from work with Blair, after having ridden in.  We headed over Bernardo Center Dr to Camino del Norte and took it up to Carmel Mountain Rd.  I noticed that the wind was pretty brisk, coming from the southwest.  Down to Rancho Carmel Dr, turning left there and riding down to the beginning of the 56 bike path before turning around and heading back to the corner by Oggi's to wait for meeting up with Justin Albert.  Once he arrived, we got onto the 56 bike path and took it all the way down to Camino del Sur.  I was out ahead for much of the non-downhill sections here.  Turned at that intersection and started heading back toward work, again with me getting out ahead and pausing at times to join up with the others.  This was the M.O. all the way back to the intersection with Bernardo Center Dr, where Justin continued straight and we headed back to the starting point.  I picked up my backpack from Blair's car and then rode home the normal way.  The wind was quite helpful on the climb back up Camino del Sur, where it felt like someone was giving us a small push.  Felt good on the ride, the miles I have been putting in are starting to make the courses seem a little flatter. Justin also had a stronger ride than our last time riding together, and Blair is shaping up as well.  On this relatively easy-paced ride, my average heartrate, as measured by my Fitbit, was below 100 bpm.

07-04-2023 Ride

Solo ride over to John's house, following my old standard route using Duenda Rd and Bernardo Center Dr to get over to RB Rd.  From there, it was the standard way.  Pushed a decent, not scorching pace, and I kept it above 10 mph on the last little climb up into his neighborhood.  Day was overcast and foggy at times.  We waited until Dave showed up, then took off back the way I came to get to Poway Rd, turning left there and taking it and Rancho Penasquitos Blvd to the 56 bike path.  That short little climb wasn't too bad.  Then we took the bike path all the way down to El Camino Real.  On the latter half of this section, we we riding in the opposite direction to the Scripps Rancho Old Pros riders who were doing the 25 mile route, and it was a little messy at times with them not staying on their side of the path.  Dave and I shouted at a couple of riders.  We headed south on El Camino Real, taking that very slight climb up to Carmel Mountain Rd and making it seem easy.  Then it was the nice gradual downhill on Vista Sorrento Pkwy to Sorrento Valley Blvd to get over to Sorrento Valley Rd, where we continued south until it transitioned into Mira Mesa Blvd.  I had never ridden this road out of Sorrento Valley, and it was pretty nice, not too steep.  Dave was feeling it though, especially in his replaced knee, so he was going slow and John was hanging with him.  Up to Camino Ruiz, which we used to get over to Miramar Rd.  I had forgotten that this road has a little dip and then climb back up to the turn, but it wasn't too bad.  While on Miramar Rd heading back, I found 6 pennies and picked them up for good luck.  Dave and I were riding together at this time, and I tried to keep relatively close to him on the climb up Pomerado Rd, pausing at times for him to catch up and then riding together for a while.  I found another penny on the road and picked it up, then pushed my pace to catch up to Dave and eventually John right at the top of the climb.  Normal way back to John's house from there, pushing over 800 W briefly on the little climb on Cypress Canyon Park Dr before turning onto Angelique St.  At John's house, we had mango smoothies that Vivian made, and we sat and chatted for a bit before I headed out.  Retraced my route there, but I wanted to make sure I was over 50 miles for the day, so I turned right off of Pomerado Rd and rode Glenoak Rd up to its end (not far at all, nothing to see there) before returning to my route.  By the hospital and then down to Avenida la Valencia, turning right there and taking it up to its end, which has some double digit gradients to put some pain in.  Back down to Avenida Florencia, turning left there and taking it over to Espola Rd.  I was turned around by this time and not thinking straight, so I turned right instead of left and ended up riding up to Martincoit Rd before turning around and heading back down into RB via RB Rd.  Home via Bernardo Center Dr and Duenda Rd, also getting over 3000' of climbing in.

07-02-2023 Ride

Solo ride, heading out around 6:30 and deciding to take it easy, was mostly successful.  Down past the park to Pomerado Rd, which I took up to Scripps-Poway Pkwy before turning around and heading back to Oak Knoll Rd to get over to Poway Rd.  I rode through the parking lot by Mexicocina, since I thought I saw it had closed down (it hadn't).  From there, it was the time trial route back home but not at typical time trial route pace.  Morning was cool and a little foggy in places.  I found an abandoned pickleball paddle by the turn onto Camino del Norte and picked it up.  Also found a penny at the stop light by the freeway, so it was my lucky day!

07-01-2023 Ride

This turned out to be a good day on the bike, not yet sure why I had good form.  Through the neighborhoods, mine and 4S Ranch, to the starting point at the 4S Target.  On this ride there were: Rob, Arnold, Jed, Ray, Nel, Charlie, and Jamil.  Standard route down into Fairbanks Ranch, turning onto El Apajo and riding over to Via de la Valle.  I didn't push my pace too hard but was still first up to the turn.  We stayed on this road up to the Del Dios climb, where, once the gradients kicked up, it was me, Jed, and Arnold out in front.  We stayed that way, with Jed a little ahead, until near the top of the climb by the tree, when I kicked out and sprinted to get there first.  A break at the top before continuing on Del Dios Hwy.  Jamil had a major headache and decided to cut it short by turning onto Via Rancho Pkwy and heading back.  The rest of us continued over to Citracado Pkwy, turning left there and heading down to Harmony Grove Rd.  We all pretty much stayed together until the road turned and the climbing started.  Just before then, Arnold attacked and got out ahead, and Jed rode to catch up to him.  I stayed back, conserving strength for the climbs on Elfin Forest Rd.  It was the right call, since I eventually caught them after the first climb and before the following little climbs to get into San Elijo Hills.  I set a series of PRs on the Elfin Forest climbing sections.  We gathered up at the turn onto San Elijo Rd, turned left there and had a nice descent where I was out in front again.  Left onto Rancho Santa Fe Rd, with the little climb there before the long descent down to La Costa Ave.  Jed and I were out front on the descent, and we turned right at the light and continued our descent, with some small uphills, all the way down to El Camino Real.  Then we had a decent pace line over to the freeway, although Jed was over pace when he got out in front and it was all I could do to stay with him.  Down to the Coast Hwy, turning left and stopping for another break at the 7-Eleven.  After continuing, I was more cautious about pushing the pace, knowing that I didn't want to run out of energy.  The group was also pacing itself as we rode over to Via de la Valle and turned left.  Lots of fair traffic, which was a little dicey, but we got through it.  Over to San Dieguito Rd via El Camino Real, out in front again.  We tried a pace line on the flats, but a little less than halfway through Rob had a flat and that stopped it.  Not fast at all on the Three Witches climb, it was me and Jed in front and the others trailing, and I couldn't match his pace after he completed the second climb.  Rob was running out of gas, so I stayed with him while he ate something and the others continued on.  Then we rode back to the starting point, with me getting out ahead and waiting at various spots to ride with him again.  The ride home was mildly interesting, I saw I was close to a metric century, so I rode down RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr and continued down the hill to the park before turning around and riding back home.  Finished right at the metric century distance.  Legs felt fine at the end, seemed stronger throughout the ride.  I'll see next Saturday if it was a fluke or if my fitness is coming back to a higher level.  My Fitbit ran out of battery after mile 40, so I don't have a full-ride average heartrate.
