Solo ride over to John's house, following my old standard route using Duenda Rd and Bernardo Center Dr to get over to RB Rd. From there, it was the standard way. Pushed a decent, not scorching pace, and I kept it above 10 mph on the last little climb up into his neighborhood. Day was overcast and foggy at times. We waited until Dave showed up, then took off back the way I came to get to Poway Rd, turning left there and taking it and Rancho Penasquitos Blvd to the 56 bike path. That short little climb wasn't too bad. Then we took the bike path all the way down to El Camino Real. On the latter half of this section, we we riding in the opposite direction to the Scripps Rancho Old Pros riders who were doing the 25 mile route, and it was a little messy at times with them not staying on their side of the path. Dave and I shouted at a couple of riders. We headed south on El Camino Real, taking that very slight climb up to Carmel Mountain Rd and making it seem easy. Then it was the nice gradual downhill on Vista Sorrento Pkwy to Sorrento Valley Blvd to get over to Sorrento Valley Rd, where we continued south until it transitioned into Mira Mesa Blvd. I had never ridden this road out of Sorrento Valley, and it was pretty nice, not too steep. Dave was feeling it though, especially in his replaced knee, so he was going slow and John was hanging with him. Up to Camino Ruiz, which we used to get over to Miramar Rd. I had forgotten that this road has a little dip and then climb back up to the turn, but it wasn't too bad. While on Miramar Rd heading back, I found 6 pennies and picked them up for good luck. Dave and I were riding together at this time, and I tried to keep relatively close to him on the climb up Pomerado Rd, pausing at times for him to catch up and then riding together for a while. I found another penny on the road and picked it up, then pushed my pace to catch up to Dave and eventually John right at the top of the climb. Normal way back to John's house from there, pushing over 800 W briefly on the little climb on Cypress Canyon Park Dr before turning onto Angelique St. At John's house, we had mango smoothies that Vivian made, and we sat and chatted for a bit before I headed out. Retraced my route there, but I wanted to make sure I was over 50 miles for the day, so I turned right off of Pomerado Rd and rode Glenoak Rd up to its end (not far at all, nothing to see there) before returning to my route. By the hospital and then down to Avenida la Valencia, turning right there and taking it up to its end, which has some double digit gradients to put some pain in. Back down to Avenida Florencia, turning left there and taking it over to Espola Rd. I was turned around by this time and not thinking straight, so I turned right instead of left and ended up riding up to Martincoit Rd before turning around and heading back down into RB via RB Rd. Home via Bernardo Center Dr and Duenda Rd, also getting over 3000' of climbing in.
