07-22-2023 Ride

Solo ride over to Rob's place, taking the time trial starting route over to Bernardo Center Dr and then up Bernardo Heights Pkwy to Paseo Lucido.  I met him there, and we loaded our bikes into his car and headed down to Shelter Island, the parking lot by Humphrey's, where we met up with other Bisikleta riders: Rob, Perse, Kamal, Fritz, Omar, Gideon, Charlie, and Sassan.  We headed over Scott St to Harbor Dr, then turned left onto Nimitz Blvd, taking it over to the San Diego River Bikeway, where we headed west until we got into Ocean Beach.  Followed a series of surface streets and turns until we got to Hill St, where we turned and climbed up to Tarento Dr.  This is a really steep climb, over 15% at times.  Sassan was out in front, and I couldn't keep up with his pace, but I didn't lose sight of him.  We gathered at the top, then took Tarento Dr over to Dupont St and then onto Catalina Blvd.  Turned there and kept on it as it turned into Cabrillo Memorial Dr, past Fort Rosecrans and up to the entrance to Cabrillo National Monument.  Brief rest there before turning around and riding back the way we came.  It seemed like more climbing on the way there than downhill on the return.  We eventually turned off on Canon St and took this nice, more gradual downhill all the way back to Scott St. turning left there and staying on Harbor Dr.  We rode this road past Spanish Landing (bathroom break) and continued on into the city, eventually riding, slowly, through the crowds by Comic Con, where some but not a lot of people were dressed up in Cosplay style.  Some rough roads heading out, but then the bike lanes cleared up as we followed the path of the Bayshore Bikeway.  Another brief rest by the small park where the Russian oligarch's yacht is impounded before continuing on via surface streets and the Bikeway, past western Chula Vista and then to Imperial Beach, where the Bikeway swung west and followed the bottom curve of the bay before turning north and running along Silver Strand Blvd.  At some point near here, Omar split off and rode home, while the rest of us continued.  Around that turn, Kamal and Fritz took off and I worked pretty hard to catch up to them.  Kamal was a beast here, leading out for long stretches at a grueling pace.  Most of the rest of us hung on, with me, Fritz, and Perse taking shorter turns in the lead.  We rode back to Coronado, following the path leading under the bridge and to the park next to it for another break.  From there, we rode to the ferry landing and took it over to the Convention Center landing, getting off there and slowly winding our way through the crowds on the paths, lots of people there.  We got through most of them, Charlie and I getting separated from the others and then reunited.  I led out for much of the next stretch on the walking paths, not great for cycling, following them back parallel to Harbor Drive until we were able to cross under the bridge and then get onto it to ride over the bay.  We retraced our route to Scott St and then to Shelter Island Dr to finish up.  This was a different kind of ride, very flat except for a couple of sections, and alternately fast and slow on the flats, due to crowd conditions.
