This turned out to be a good day on the bike, not yet sure why I had good form. Through the neighborhoods, mine and 4S Ranch, to the starting point at the 4S Target. On this ride there were: Rob, Arnold, Jed, Ray, Nel, Charlie, and Jamil. Standard route down into Fairbanks Ranch, turning onto El Apajo and riding over to Via de la Valle. I didn't push my pace too hard but was still first up to the turn. We stayed on this road up to the Del Dios climb, where, once the gradients kicked up, it was me, Jed, and Arnold out in front. We stayed that way, with Jed a little ahead, until near the top of the climb by the tree, when I kicked out and sprinted to get there first. A break at the top before continuing on Del Dios Hwy. Jamil had a major headache and decided to cut it short by turning onto Via Rancho Pkwy and heading back. The rest of us continued over to Citracado Pkwy, turning left there and heading down to Harmony Grove Rd. We all pretty much stayed together until the road turned and the climbing started. Just before then, Arnold attacked and got out ahead, and Jed rode to catch up to him. I stayed back, conserving strength for the climbs on Elfin Forest Rd. It was the right call, since I eventually caught them after the first climb and before the following little climbs to get into San Elijo Hills. I set a series of PRs on the Elfin Forest climbing sections. We gathered up at the turn onto San Elijo Rd, turned left there and had a nice descent where I was out in front again. Left onto Rancho Santa Fe Rd, with the little climb there before the long descent down to La Costa Ave. Jed and I were out front on the descent, and we turned right at the light and continued our descent, with some small uphills, all the way down to El Camino Real. Then we had a decent pace line over to the freeway, although Jed was over pace when he got out in front and it was all I could do to stay with him. Down to the Coast Hwy, turning left and stopping for another break at the 7-Eleven. After continuing, I was more cautious about pushing the pace, knowing that I didn't want to run out of energy. The group was also pacing itself as we rode over to Via de la Valle and turned left. Lots of fair traffic, which was a little dicey, but we got through it. Over to San Dieguito Rd via El Camino Real, out in front again. We tried a pace line on the flats, but a little less than halfway through Rob had a flat and that stopped it. Not fast at all on the Three Witches climb, it was me and Jed in front and the others trailing, and I couldn't match his pace after he completed the second climb. Rob was running out of gas, so I stayed with him while he ate something and the others continued on. Then we rode back to the starting point, with me getting out ahead and waiting at various spots to ride with him again. The ride home was mildly interesting, I saw I was close to a metric century, so I rode down RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr and continued down the hill to the park before turning around and riding back home. Finished right at the metric century distance. Legs felt fine at the end, seemed stronger throughout the ride. I'll see next Saturday if it was a fluke or if my fitness is coming back to a higher level. My Fitbit ran out of battery after mile 40, so I don't have a full-ride average heartrate.
Avg speed = 17.5 mph (from GPX File Decoder analysis). Total mileage = 62.2 mi
Bisikleta route avg speed = 17.7 mph
