11-29-2024 Entry

Got up early and went for a walk around the neighborhood, for the first time in quite a while. I knew I wouldn't have much chance to exercise later, so this is how I got most of my steps in. I got back, had some pie for breakfast, and hung around the house until it was time for me, Laura, and Joe to drive down to the Midway. We left around 9:15 and got down there well in time to park in the lot right next to the ship. No line to wait in, so we walked right on. We spent a little time on the hangar deck, then a lot more time in the Below Decks portion, which was really interesting. It was curious how many different mess/galley set-ups there were. This ship had a complement of 4500 sailors on it, and it was effectively a little city on the water. Was never used in WWII, but it saw action in Korea, Vietnam, and Operation Desert Storm. We also toured the island portion of the ship, and that was cool as well. The admiral's and captain's quarters were pretty deluxe. All in all, it was an excellent museum tour. We headed home after that (Laura drove) and had a late lunch. Joe and I watched a little football before we had hors d'ouvres for dinner. It was a pretty quiet evening after that.
