11-01-2023 Ride

Because we couldn't make the pumpkin cake the previous evening, we made it in the morning in the Dutch oven.  It was okay, probably too hot at the top and not hot enough around the edges.  After breakfast, since it was high tide, there wasn't any point in heading down to the beach, since the water was up to the cliffs.  So I went for a bike ride, and Ann drove into Carlsbad and hung out.  I rode south on PCH to Del Mar, then continued on to take the inside route up Torrey Pines, which was a grind as usual.  Turns out that Strava said this was a PR time for me, which is a little surprising.  Then it was back the same way I came.  Generally, I made decent time, but there were a lot of stops at traffic lights and I didn't get into an extended cycling rhythm.  On the way back, I kept riding past Poinsettia Ln to Island Way, turning around there and heading back to the campsite.  It turns out that Ann was driving back to the site at almost the same time.

Avg speed = 17.5 mph. Total mileage = 31.4 mi
Avg power = 160 W. Weighted avg power = 180 W
Total elevation gain = 1180'
Avg heartrate = 133 bpm

We sat around the campsite for a while, then walked down to the beach, walking up to the northern set of stairs to get down there.  The tide had receded, so there was beach to walk on.  I brought my spring suit, so I went into the water and tried out some ocean swimming.  It was a real challenge, having to deal with the waves breaking in.  I'll need to chat with some other triathletes to hear more about how to swim efficiently in the waves.  Water was cold to get into, but with the spring suit I generally got used to it.  Came out, sat for a while, then went back in for another, shorter stint.  The goggles weren't so useful, as the waves displaced them from my eyes and they fogged up.  I had a quick shower after we got back to camp, and it felt pretty great.  For dinner, we made Dutch oven enchiladas, and they were tasty.  I was pretty wiped out at the end of the day, so Ann made a fire and we sat around it for a while before heading to bed.
