01-02-2026 Swim/Ride

Slept pretty well considering that I had a long nap the previous afternoon. Woke up after 6:00 (<>), got ready for a swim at the WWC. It was my intention to keep my pace steady and focus on maintaining longer swim strokes throughout the workout. I also wore my waterproof bone conduction headphones to play music while I swam. Swam two 500s, then swam the last 500 with the pull buoy, which helped my time a fair amount. Here are the times for the 3 500s: 9:39, 9:58, 9:27. Elapsed moving time was 29:04.

Avg pace = 1:56/100 yds (Video)
Total distance = 1500 yds
Elapsed moving time = 29:04 (Video)
Avg heartrate = 153 bpm (Zepp, not likely)
Relative Effort =  45 (not likely)
SWOLF =38
Avg stroke rate = 20 bpm
Avg pull distance = 2.41 yds

Had some breakfast and tea when I got home, then I went out and installed the patch tube on my front tire and put everything back together. Put a box of new inner tubes in my Amazon shopping cart, didn't order yet. In the early afternoon I decided to go for a ride, initially over to Aaron's house to pick up the shopping bag I left there on Thursday night. I found that the tube I patched had failed, so I had to change the tube quickly before the ride. Headed through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd and used it to get to W Bernardo Dr. Turned there and headed to RB Rd, turning right and riding up the hill. I was taking the pace easy, not wanting to stress my system too much just yet.  Over to Paseo del Sur by following the new long route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood. Rode up to Potomac Ridge Rd and turned left to get to Aaron's place, where he happened to be on the front porch washing it down. We chatted for a bit after I picked up the bag, then I headed back to Paseo del Sur and took it west to CdS. A right turn there, then up to Artesian Rd, where I turned left and rode all the way down to where the road was flooded. Took a pic of me by the water before I turned around and rode back to CdS. There is a Strava segment, Artesian Rd ITT, that starts and ends at CdS, and I had a PR (18:56, 151 W, 127 bpm) on this segment, not pushing that hard. This is the second fastest time for my age group, with only 25 total attempts. Still, it was pretty cool, and I'm pretty sure I can set the fastest time if I don't stop at the bottom and push a little harder. I also set a PR (10:37, 215 W, 143 bpm) for the climb from the bottom back up to CdS, top 10 for my age group with a lot more attempts. May be able to climb that leaderboard a little bit but not to the top. Back to CdS, then home the new normal way from there, via W Bernardo Dr. Weather held up, didn't get rained on.

Avg speed = 14.8 mph. Total mileage = 19.3 mi
Avg power = 131 W. Weighted avg power = 168 W
Total elevation gain = 1530'
Avg heartrate = 119 bpm (Coospo)
Relative Effort = 28
Training Load = 83
Intensity = 76%

Had time to shower after I got back, and then I started backing up our PC data files. It appears that one of my 1 TB drives, the one with our data backups, has failed. I tried numerous times to reformat it, without success, so I put the backup on the other 1 TB portable drive. Got most of the files copied before the late afternoon, when Ann and I drove down to Liberty Station to have dinner and visit several museums during First Friday at the Arts District. Ate at the Italian food restaurant down there, it was decent. After walking through the small watercolor and textiles museums, we headed over to see a show, Lyrics & Laughs, at Mockingbird Improv. We'd been there before, probably before we retired. I was a little skeptical about the show, but it was moderately entertaining. Several singers, one of whom Ann recognized as the emcee at the Train Song Festival in November at Old Poway Park, sang some songs, then the improv actors created a series of short skits very, very loosely based on themes from the songs. The other singer was not to my taste, I got the impression that she felt she was a better singer than she was. Not all the improv players were great, but there were enough laughs and clever moments to make it worthwhile. Drove home in light rain.
