01-11-2026 Ride

Slept okay, although I was thirsty during the night and had to pee. Got ready for a bike ride on a windy day. It wasn't that cold, but I took arm-warmers just in case. Glad I did. Headed down by the park and across the freeway, cutting through the mall parking lot and taking the path through Kit Carson Park to get to El Ku Ave. Up the normal way from there to Centre City Pkwy, heading north all the way through Escondido and out to Deer Springs Rd. I was slower than I would have liked on this generally climbing part of the ride. Careful going down the hill on Deer Springs Rd, quality was poor and it was fast. Stayed pretty fast on Twin Oaks Valley Rd, I might have had a quartering tailwind to help me. Got to Richmar Ave and used it to get to Pico Ave, which I took over to Mission Rd. Turned left here and spent the next several miles riding into a headwind that got stiffer as I got closer to Escondido. All the way back to Centre City Pkwy, heading home the normal across the freeway from there. It was faster, again perhaps a little bit of wind assistance on the way home, at least it wasn't working against me. I'm realizing that I don't have the foundational strength to ride hard the day after a long ride any more. I ended up saving this route on bothy Wahoo and my watch because I wasn't sure my Wahoo wouldn't run out of battery.

Avg speed = 17.0 mph. Total mileage = 30.9 mi

Had some cereal and coffee for breakfast when I got home, watched TV for a while. Then I went out in the back yard and removed weeds from the gravel path. Got most of them out of the section by the yard, some more work to be done there. Ann had finished taking the decorations off the Christmas tree, so I took it down onto a tarp and carried it outside, trying to minimize needles falling all over the place. Took it into the side yard and used both saws and the pruning shears to lop off the branches and cut up the trunk. The branches went into the green waste, and I saved the trunk pieces to see it they will season enough to be usable as firewood. In the afternoon I saved some music from Ed Sheeran to listen to, familiarizing myself with it before the big concert. Was a quiet evening. I talked to Mom and let her know that Joe and Laura are going to be there on Saturday as well. She seemed a little out of it at the start of the phone call but was more animated at the end.
