01-04-2026 Ride

Heard rain in the night, I also got up, was still hungry, and ate some cereal and a banana. Got up shortly after I woke up and got ready for a ride to meet Paula. Was a little worried about getting rained on, but it didn't happen. The roads were wet for the first half of the ride, other than that it was fine, nice temperature. I headed down by the park and over the freeway to Via Rancho Pkwy, turning left and taking it to Felicita Rd. I could tell from the initial climb that this was not going to be a fast day for me. Legs were still feeling tired from the previous day. Up and over Gamble Ln, turning there and taking it to Bernardo Ave, turning right and going by the gate to get to the road by the freeway. Up to 11th Ave, using to get to Del Dios Rd, where I turned left and got to Avenida del Diablo. Took it over to Citracado Pkwy and used this road to get to Harmony Grove Village Pkwy. Down to Harmony Grove Rd, where I turned left. This road showed lots of signs of flooding, was still wet and muddy in places. I took it over to Elfin Forest Rd and then climbed, slowly, up to San Elijo Hills, heading over to Albertson's, where Paula was already waiting, having ridden down the hill from her house. I convinced her to follow my suggested route, which took a lot of elevation gain out and still got us back to the starting point. She probably wasn't thrilled with the idea, but I wasn't in the mood to go wandering through neighborhoods for questionable reasons. We headed down the hill on San Elijo Rd and took a left onto RSF Rd. I got a low-battery warning on my rear derailleur, so I pushed hard up the climb and stopped at the top to swap it out with my spare. Then we headed down to La Costa Ave and took it down to ECR (lowest point in the ride). Paula was initially riding pretty strong, and I was struggling a bit to keep up with her. Our pace matched a little better after a right turn onto ECR. The climb here always seems to be longer than I remember, not steep but lengthy. We eventually got to Palomar Airport Rd, turning right there. Paula used to work in this area, and she regularly rode up this climb. Again, it wasn't steep or very long, we stayed together. From here, it was a generally climbing route up into San Marcos, staying on San Marcos Blvd until turning onto Discovery St. I was tiring out by this time, so was Paula. So although I was taking the climbs slowly, she was falling behind. We took Discovery St over to Barham Dr, by CSUSM, and up to Meyers Ave, turning right there and using it to get to Auto Park Way. We rode up to Citracado Pkwy, on Paula's request, since she didn't want to risk the poor quality of Country Club Dr. Then it was really slow up to the hospital (highest point in the ride, just a little higher than San Elijo Hills), I got out a little bit ahead but not much. We then descended to Kauana Loa Dr and used it to get to Harmony Grove Rd. Thankfully, there wasn't much climbing to do to get back to Harmony Grove Village Rd. Paula and I then retraced my earlier route, stopping at the park where I ate a banana and tried, without success, to get into the bathroom. We pretty much stayed together down to Elfin Forest Rd and on the climb after the turn. I did get out ahead of her in some of the subsequent little climbs, not too far though. We climbed back to San Elijo Hills and stopped there just before the village while Paula decided how she wanted to get home. Eventually she decided to ride back with me as I retraced my route back to Harmony Grove Village Rd. I was slow on the modest climbs of this stretch and still got out ahead of her. She turned into Harmony Grove Village to ride a little bit through that neighborhood, and I kept going. Shortly before this point, my replacement battery on my rear derailleur stopped working (I think one of the contacts is sketchy), so I switched batteries around and was able to shift fine. I rode back to Citracado Pkwy and turned right. Stopped shortly after to find out why my headphones weren't working and found that my phone had turned off. This has happened a couple of times, will have to keep track of it to see if my phone is reaching end-of-life. I rode up to Valley Pkwy and turned right to get to Via Rancho Pkwy, turning left there. Again, I was slow and in my lowest gears heading up that modest climb, was glad to get to the top and coast down to the freeway. Home the normal way from there, enduring pain on the last two little climbs and feeling pretty spent once I got home. More calories needed on rides like this, I was serious undernourished for my effort level.

I ended up eating a fairly light lunch, in a sense I was too tired to go to the effort of making a big meal. In the afternoon I read for a bit, had a very brief rest, then went out in the garage and cleared off my workbench of the miscellaneous parts from the solar lights I've been testing. Packed up one of the camping bins and put it back on the shelf. The inner tube I had been trying to patch has a through-and-through hole that can't be patched, so I tossed it. I made a big batch of baked mac & cheese for dinner, was okay but could have used more seasoning. Watched some TV in the evening, getting to the end of our Apple TV subscription period.
