01-10-2026 Ride

Slept okay, no caffeine the previous day probably helped, although the short nap I took wasn't helpful here. Got up around 6:00 and had cereal for breakfast before getting ready for the Bisikleta ride. It was breezy but not too cold as I headed through the neighborhood and then took the new extended route through the 4S Ranch neighborhood. Andy and James were already at the 4S Target when I got there. We thought it might just be the three of us, but Jed and Jed A. both showed up to ride. I'd made the route but couldn't load it onto my Wahoo, my phone wasn't getting a 5G signal, and I couldn't figure out why. Andy had the route as well, so we followed him. Over to Paseo del Sur, then Del Sur Ridge Rd to Nicole Ridge Rd to Camino San Bernardo. I had stopped to try and get my phone to work, so I was catching up with the others here. We turned on Deer Ridge Rd and took it down to Deer Trail Dr. I think Laura and I were on these roads when we ran the Turkey Trot. To 4S Ranch Pkwy, taking it down to Dove Creek Rd and using that to get over to Dove Canyon Rd. Down to Bernardo Center Dr, turning left there and climbing to the top. I pushed it a little bit here, getting ahead of the others to see if I could figure out my phone situation at the top. No luck. We all continued to Camino del Norte, turning right there and riding over to Carmel Mountain Rd. James and I got out ahead of the others, and I gapped James on the little climb before the descent to the turn. All back together at the turn, then another right turn onto Rancho Carmel Dr to get back over to Carmel Mountain Rd, where we turned right again. Then it was some gradual climbing. On the longer climb, Jed A. got on my wheel and held on. I was pushing but not going all out. We both rode down to make the turn to stay on Carmel Mountain Rd and climbed again to get to the high school. Past there, it was me and James out front, and we stayed that way as we followed this road over to get onto the 56 bike path. All together again there, taking the path all the way to its end and then to Carmel Valley Rd. We stopped at the parking lot by Torrey Pines State Beach for a bathroom break and a brief rest before continuing up the hill to get to PCH. Continued the climb there, I got out in front again. We rode through Del Mar, and again it was James and I who were out in front. Waited for the others just past VdlV. We stayed roughly together through Solana Beach, but James picked up the pace on the little descent to the flats leading to Cardiff, and we dropped the others again, Andy in particular. Turned right on Chesterfield and then left on San Elijo Ave to get to VG Donuts, our scheduled break stop. The others showed up soon, all except Andy. Somehow he had missed the information about our stop, so he continued on the route. I tried to call him and then texted him; when he got the text, he turned around and rode back to meet us. It took a while. The cinnamon roll I had was pretty good, I shared it with Andy when he showed up. James and Jed A. showed Jed how to load routes onto his Garmin, we'll see whether that information sticks. After the break we took San Elijo Ave south to Manchester Ave. Andy was fading fast by this point. I got out ahead again with James, and we rode past the turn to stay on Manchester Ave, over to RSF Rd. Waited for everybody there, then turned right and over to La Bajada, riding up the hill a little bit before turning right onto La Noria. I hung back with Andy here, it descended gradually for a while before we turned onto El Camino Real and started to climb. On the climb I picked up the pace and pushed to the front, it was me and Jed until I gave it a bigger effort near the top to get some separation. The others eventually showed up, Andy was wiped out by this point. We had a nice descent on ECR to VdlV, turning right there and then taking a left to stay on ECR. Over to San Dieguito Rd, turning left there. I waited for the others to show, then started riding, but somehow they didn't follow. After I saw the gap, I stopped and waited for them all. At this point, I dropped my pace and stayed with Andy for the rest of the ride. The others got out ahead of us. He and I eventually caught up with James on the Three Witches climb, but Andy slowed down again, and James rode ahead. It was slow going up the climb and all the way on CdS after the turn back to Target. But he made it. I stayed there a little bit. Jed A. had turned right on CdS, so I didn't see him after he got ahead on San Dieguito Rd. Rode home the old short route, I was also feeling tired and a little hungry.

Had some tortillas and taco meat for lunch while I watched a little TV. Ann went to church to help set things up for Merle Avery's memorial service. It was a quiet afternoon for me. I had a nap, felt better after that. Because my chain was a little noisy at the end of the ride, having ridden in wet conditions several times recently, I took it off, cleaned it, and replaced it with the re-waxed chain I had ready. Then I re-waxed the chain (#2) that I had removed. In the evening we went to church and participated in the potluck game night. Chatted with Cathie and Joe, Kay and Earl, as well as Vanessa and Greg, friends of Emily's. We played some letter word game that Emily brought, it was fun. Ann and Kay really know a lot of obscure little words. Home and a quiet evening after that.
