02-23-2024 Entry

We got up around 6:00 and got started on packing up the gear and eating a light breakfast.  The packing went okay, although I should have remembered to check the oil before putting all the stuff in the car.  As it was, I unloaded some of the things to get to the oil in the spare tire well, and I added a quart to the engine.  The drive out of the park and out of the valley was uneventful, I took it slowly on the long climbs to get to the pass.  Then it was generally downhill, including some long, very steep descents that overheated the brakes and caused me to pump them and be very cautious.  We didn't have data on our phones, so I was navigating by following Google Maps.  Ann was helpful here, she pointed out a turn I might not have made.  We got really low on gas, <30 miles left in the tank, before we reached Trona and were able to refuel.  I thought it would be okay as long as there were gas stations in Trona, but we cut it pretty close.  We ended up taking a different route back that took us through parts of Ridgecrest, might have added some time to the drive.  Then it was the featureless drive on the 395 back to Adelanto, where Google Maps had us take a detour and presumably save some time.  A little slow traffic at the merge with the 60 and beyond, not terrible but unwelcome.  On the 215 and the 15, the traffic going the other way was generally awful, glad we weren't having to deal with that.  We got home in 6 hours driving time, with a couple of gas stops.  Unpacked the car fairly quickly and efficiently and put the camping gear up.  Then it was a quiet rest of the day and evening.  I went for a short walk in the evening to finish getting my steps in.
