06-30-2024 Ride

Got up fairly early for a bike ride, getting in some miles before meeting Jim at his house at 7:00. I rode down the hill and then back up W Bernardo Dr to RB Rd, then up that little climb to Via del Campo, where I turned left. That road is in terrible shape. I took it back over to W Bernardo Dr, then down to Bernardo Center Dr. I rode this down the hill to Dove Canyon Rd and turned right there. Up to Dove Creek Rd, where I turned left and rode over to 4S Ranch Pkwy. To Camino del Norte, turning right there and taking it up to Camino San Bernardo. Left there and over to RB Rd, which I took until turning onto Matinal Rd to ride through the neighborhood to Cabela Dr. Then to Luz Pl and to Duenda Rd. I rode to the end of Corazon Pl before meeting Jim at his house, then we rode the time trial route, mostly. He was slow and I just rode with him and chatted about how things are going. At Ted Williams Pkwy, he had to stop and rest for a while, then he was good to go for the remainder. I showed him the shortcut using Ave of Science and through the parking lot to get more quickly to Camino del Norte, then we were back on the time trial route. I forgot to wear my chest HR band so only have the Fitbit data below.

Avg speed = 13.7 mph. Total mileage = 26.7 mi
Avg power = 106 W. Weighted avg power = 135 W
Total elevation gain = 1720'
Avg heartrate = 121 bpm (Fitbit)

Back home and a quick shower before we drove to church to hear Emily's solo in a chancel choir piece. The piece was not great, but she was fantastic, hitting some really high notes. It was nice to see a lot of familiar faces, I talked at length with Sandi Baxter about Jack's passing. Then we headed home (stopped for fruit at Sprout's) and had a quiet afternoon. I took a nap, read a little bit. Later in the afternoon, I trimmed the big shrub on the west side of our front yard, probably my least favorite yardwork task. It took almost an hour and a half, but it looks better now and I hope it doesn't need trimming for another year. Then I watched some TV and did some Python coding to automate the generation of a CSV file containing all the power curve data created from my main analysis program. The program now works fine.

06-29-2024 Ride

I suspected that this was going to be a longer bike ride. Got up early and got started early, since we were meeting at 7:30 at the Peet's down by the intersection of Camino del Sur and the 56. I noticed that I had a dead shifter battery, the right shifter, just past Duenda Rd, so I stopped and replaced it with the spare in my seat bag. Then I rode through the neighborhood up to RB Rd, then took it to Dove Canyon Rd and over to Carmel Valley Rd. Up the two little climbs at a modest pace, then on a whim I turned left onto Black Mountain Rd and took it over to Twin Trails Dr, where I turned right and looped back to get to Carmel Mountain Rd, taking a left there. It got me to the 56 bike path, where I turned and headed down to Camino del Sur. Right turn there to get over to Peet's. On this ride, there were: Ray, Jed, Perse, Kamal, Steven (Kamal's friend), Francis, Martie (Francis' friend), Nel, Joey, Zac, Charlie, and James (he has lost over 50 lbs!). We headed back to the 56 bike path, with me and James out in front of the others. On the bike path down to Carmel Valley Rd, where the rest of the group finally caught up with us. We stayed on the path all the way to its new end on Sorrento Valley Rd, then took that over to Carmel Valley Rd. Up to PCH, where we turned left and rode down by the shore and then up Torrey Pines Rd. I was determined to put in a big effort and try to set a PR, so I kept my power around 300 W all the way to the top. Was out in front for most of the time, but at the end Zac caught up with me (he did have to work to catch up), and we got to the top right around the same time. I did set a PR (7:04, 296 W, 169 bpm), but it was an all-out effort for me, and Zac still had more to give. Everybody gathered at the top, then we headed back down and stayed on PCH through Del Mar. I led out on the little climb into Del Mar and got ahead of the others, then I waited for them to catch up. Around Via de la Valle, we took a break and Tony Nucup joined us. On PCH, we were riding fast but not quite as crazy fast as the previous week, which was a blessing. I was able to stay with the leaders pretty much and to get out in front at times, including putting some distance between me and them on the way into Encinitas. Then it was me, Jed, and Tony who got out in front, while the rest waited for everybody to catch up before continuing past La Costa Ave. The three of us rode out to Poinsettia Ln before turning around, then we saw the others going the other way and let them know to turn around too. Gathered at the usual 7-Eleven, and it was a slightly shorter break than usual, since the sun was just starting to peek out from behind the clouds (we had cloudy weather up until then). We made decent time on the return, I was again out among the leaders for most of the time. Perse dropped the hammer on the little stretch into Solana Beach, and I couldn't match his pace until he let up. Ahead of the others through Del Mar, then we gathered again at the turn back onto Carmel Valley Rd. It was pretty fast on the first stretch of the 56 bike path up to the cul de sac. When we got up to Carmel Valley Rd, we tried to set up a paceline, but it quickly fell apart. I didn't think we were going that fast, but folks were dropping off. So it was a smaller group that continued, including me, Francis, Jed, Tony, and Ray. We got to Camino del Sur and the ones remaining in the group gathered one last time. Nel had ridden to the meet-up spot, so he continued on, as did Tony (heading back to Mira Mesa). Martie had stayed behind at the 7-Eleven, he was going to ride a similar way back but do Torrey Pines again. At the beginning of the 56 bike path, Zac and Joey kept going to head back to west Mira Mesa. I went with them back to the parking lot, stayed for about 5 minutes, then I headed home. The sun was out and it was warm in direct sun but not so bad in the shade. Camino del Sur to Camino del Norte and then a left onto Camino San Bernardo to get over to RB Rd. Home the normal W Bernardo Dr way from there. I felt really strong at times on this ride, like my legs were in a good cycling rhythm.

Avg speed = 18.1 mph (from my analysis program). Total distance = 67.8 mi
Bisikleta route avg speed = 18.6 mph
Avg power = 158 W. Weighted avg power = 186 W
Total elevation gain = 3320'
Avg heartrate = 138 bpm (Coospo), 124 bpm (Fitbit)

I had a burger for lunch and a quiet afternoon. Put vinyl wrap on my crank arms to protect them from further wear, watched the highlights of the first stage of the TdF. In the evening, we went to Coyote Bar & Grill in Carlsbad for dinner and dancing. The dance band, New Joy, was pretty good and quite energetic, and we saw a number of characters, including the old guy with the cowboy boots from last time, a marriage proposal by a guy who met his future wife at the bar 3 years ago, a bunch of people in RFK Jr shirts, and lots of celebrating dancers. Ann drove home, which was nice, as I was pretty tired (and I had forgotten to bring my DL). <>!

06-28-2024 Hike

Got up a little late, slept longer than usual, perhaps to get over a largely negative energy day previously. Went for a 2 mile walk that turned into a hike when I got onto some trails down to the beach and back. Then we had a light breakfast and broke camp, which seemed to go faster this time than previous ones, perhaps because the car was parked much closer. Ann was starting to thaw toward me, which was welcome. The drive home went smoothly, no real traffic slowdowns to go through, and we were back (after stopping to get gas) around 10:15. Unloaded the car and put all the camping gear up, then it was a quiet day, not much done around the house. I had a nap in the afternoon, a longer one, anticipating that we were going to be out late to go to a bar downtown, but we didn't get the reservation confirmation until too late. Instead, we went for a drink at The Stand in CMR. Seems like we are generally back to normal.

06-27-2024 Ride

Woke up after making it through the night without having to get up and pee. I rode down to where the car was parked and drove it back to the campsite, then I read for a while and dozed. Got up around 7:30 and made breakfast, it was a very quiet morning. Ann was mad at me for not walking with her at her pace the previous night, and I expressed my frustration at her walking pace and the way I was feeling then. So it was a tense time. Later in the morning she drove to walk around San Clemente Old Town. I decided to go for a bike ride to clear my head. While getting ready, I had a lot of trouble closing the tent zipper and thought it might turn into a big problem. So I texted Ann to try and find some paraffin wax to grease up the zipper parts. On the ride, I got on to El Camino Real from the beach area and rode north for about 7 miles before turning onto Camino Capistrano and heading inland. I rode out until I had about 13 miles then turned around and retraced my route. The wind helped some on the way out, and the elevation helped on the way back. I could have ridden faster but was okay with my pace and average power output. It was a nice day, cloudy at the start and sunny (starting to get warm) by the end.

Avg speed = 16.9 mph. Total mileage = 25.7 mi
Avg power = 135 W. Weighted Avg power = 152 W
Total elevation gain = 620'
Avg heartrate = 119 bpm (Coospo), 116 (Fitbit)

It was a quiet afternoon, Ann was still miffed at me, so we kept our distance and chilled out around the campsite. She did bring back some paraffin (a lot of it), and the tent zipper worked much better after I lubricated the zips. Did the same for the vestibule tent flap. We made peach cobbler together, although it was a transactional thing. The cobbler was pretty good, it got a little burnt on the top but the flavor wasn't affected. Later in the afternoon, we walked down to the beach, and I sat there with her for a while before she went for a walk. When she came back, I headed back to the campsite, had enough direct sunlight for the day. It was a little better with us as we made dinner together, Dutch oven lasagna. It was delicious. I had had a long day, so after dinner I took a shower and then read in the tent for a while before going to sleep early.

06-26-2024 Swim/Ride

Got up and packed most of the camping stuff into the car. Ann will need to load the food and her clothes. Then I rode over to the WWC and met Avi for a morning swim workout. Here was the list.
4 100 yd sets
  Warmup
  Extended strokes
  Alternating fast and ow 25's
  All-out effort
8 50's on either 75 sec or 90 sec
5 100's on either 2:15 or 2:30
2 100's on cool-down pace trying to reduce stroke count

I didn't do so well in the latter exercises with lowering my stroke count just need lots more practice and arm strengthening. Kevin also suggested that I reduce my head motions and make my breathing more efficient. This was hard be cause there was a lot of chop in the water, we were sharing a lane and there were a bunch of swimmers. It was definitely a hard workout for me, looking forward to seeing improvement over time. When I got home, I packed up my stuff and put it in the car, then I got ready to ride to Oceanside. Rode into Escondido and Centre City Pkwy the normal way behind the mall, then up to Mission Ave. I took that all the way to Las Posas Rd, where I turned left and rode over to San Marcos Blvd. Right turn there, over to Palomar Airport Rd and down to PCH. Then it was a straight shot into Oceanside, where I rode all the way to Harbor Dr and stopped at a Del Taco for a quesadilla and a soda to kill some time while Ann drove to meet me.

Avg speed = 17.7 mph. Total mileage = 30.6 mi
Avg power = 165 W. Weighted avg power = 174 W
Total elevation gain = 860'
Avg heartrate = 139 bpm (! Coospo), 132 bpm (Fitbit)

We drove the rest of the way to San Clemente State Beach. Our campsite was plain, a shade cover over the picnic table but no trees. It took about an hour to set up camp, then we had a snack and walked down to the beach, about a third of a mile away. We walked along the beach and back, had a quick dinner, then I took a cold shower and we got ready to go to the Cirque du Soleil show in Laguna Hills. The show had nice lighting, staging, and music, but the acts were pretty much the same kind as we saw at Circus Vargas for a lot less. Stopped for water at Ralph's and then drove back. Unfortunately, we found that the entrance closed at 10:00, which put me in a foul mood. So we parked outside the entrance and had to walk to the campsite. I wanted to get there quickly and walked ahead of Ann, and this got her really upset. I was tired and irritable, didn't really care. Went to sleep.

06-25-2024 Entry

Woke up (<>!) and had a shower before we walked over, in Avalon, to this little fast food place for breakfast. It had Mexican and Chinese food as well as donuts and beignets. I had the latter, they were okay. Then we had a longer walk around the village, this time heading inland to see the remnants of the old Wrigley ballfield (nothing much to identify it for its previous use). We walked back down to the shore, and it was pretty quiet, still too early for the cruise ship passengers to be in town. Then we headed back to the hotel to hang out and have some chill time before we checked out around 11:00. Over to the dock for the boat ride back to the mainland. Not so many people were on the ride back, I'm guessing that they are much busier on the afternoon trip. The ride was smooth and uneventful, took about 90 minutes. There was an issue with the parking, I suspected we would run into it since Joe and Cathie had had a problem. But I worked it out without having to pay any more, and we were on the road and back toward home. Some slowing around Oceanside and then in Vista, where they had road construction that took a lane away. Still, we got home in a little over an hour. Quiet afternoon, where I planned to take another look at my bike and try to solve the creaking noise problem. I loosened the headset and gave everything a good application of grease, but I was wary about taking off the little plate that holds the lower bearing in place, so I left that alone. The torque wrench worked fine. I applied the torque in stages for the headset bolt, as recommended in the service manual I downloaded to my tablet. Blair came over as I was finishing up, I took it for a ride and the bike was still creaking. So we went back into the headset, removing that little plate, and Blair pried off the dust covers on the bearing and cleaned out the old grease and grime with WD-40 before packing it back up with grease. He did that twice, and the bike still creaked when I rode it. So he had a ride on it and guessed that the creaking sound was coming from the seat area. I listened as well, and maybe he was right. It was hard to tell, the sound was propagating through the top tube. In any case, we loosened the bolt for the seat post and took it off, inspected it, and put it back, tightening it to the recommended 5 N. Voila! The creaking sound went away. I hope that was it. I couldn't get the sound to come back but will monitor it for a while. So, the bike is pretty thoroughly serviced from recent work, including the drivetrain, headset, and seatpost. I still have work to do on the hydraulic brakes, including replacing the brake pads soon and perhaps bleeding the brake lines at that time. Blair and I talked for quite a while after that while having a beer. He mentioned that he saw Teresa a couple of times over the weekend after running into her on a bike ride. I'm not sure she is a good fit, there are warning signs, but we'll see where it goes. I watched a little TV in the evening.

06-24-2024 Hike

Woke up super early and went out for a 2.5 mile hike around the neighborhood with my loaded pack on. Wanted to get some steps in before the Catalina trip, since I didn't know what it would be like. Then we got ready and packed our stuff into the car. Ann drove up to San Clemente, and we ate breakfast in this combination donut shop Mexican fast food place. My burrito wasn't great. We drove from there over to the Dana Point marina, where we checked in for the boat ride and met up with Joe and Cathie. We chatted while we waited, then got in the wrong line to board the ship. Made it on okay and got decent seats in the upper section. The ride across was smooth and not so interesting. Toward the end we went out on the rear deck and enjoyed the breeze. Once we docked, Cathie was all hot to arrange a tour, so we checked out a couple of places, one for a 2 hour tour for over $100/person. Nope to that one, Ann came to the rescue with a 1 hour tram tour (Bear was our sing-song guide) of Avalon with some history of the village (about 7k residents) and the island. It was just the right length for me,and the others agreed. Saw the desalination plant, where they get about 20% of the water, the rest from rainfall capture. After the team tour, we had lunch at a Cafe with nice views of the harbor but not a great selection of vegetarian options. It was okay, the server John was great. Then we walked the length of the village shoreline, got some ice cream, and did some window shopping. Had a drink after this, but Cathie was anxious to get to the dock to line up for their return trip. So they left and we hung around for a while longer before heading back to the hotel. Had a brief rest there, then we walked to Von's to get some light dinner food. Ann had the good idea to eat on the rooftop, and we watched the sun set over the nearby hills. We duplicated the walk along the shore after that before getting back to the hotel. It was a quiet evening from there, both of us were pretty tired.

06-23-2024 Ride

Got up for an early start to my bike ride, since it was going to be a hot day. This was not going to be a high-output day on the bike. I rode down by the park and over to Highland Valley Rd, taking it out to the beginning of the first climb before turning around and riding back. Left on Pomerado Rd, riding up to RB Rd and turning left again.  I rode up to Bridlewood Rd, turning onto it and taking it up to Summer Sage Rd, where I turned right and rode all the way back over to Espola Rd. Then it was down to Twin Peaks Rd to take it back to Pomerado Rd. My legs were feeling tired by this point, so it was mostly Zone 2, although I had forgotten to put on my HR monitor and had to guess at my sustained effort level. I took Pomerado Rd back to RB Rd, then rode up to Olmeda Way, turning there and then onto Capilla Rd to get to Poblado Rd. From there, it was back home through the neighborhood. A short ride but one that I was ready to be done with.

Avg speed = 15.7 mph. Total mileage = 23.4 mi
Avg power = 124 W. Weighted avg power = 148 W
Total elevation gain = 1200'
Avg heartrate = 124 bpm (Fitbit)

When I got back, I had a little bit to eat, then I went in the garage and exercised the chain from my old bike to break some of the waxy linkages and get it ready to reinstall on the bike. After manually bending it several times, I wrapped it around the rake handle a couple of times, and that seemed to work pretty well. Installation went fairly smoothly, although I had some trouble getting the QuickLink to snap in. Needed to remove wax from the pin areas, since they need to fit all the way through the chain links to make the connection. Then I adjusted my front derailleur, which had curiously gotten out of alignment on my last ride with this bike. It's working pretty well now, at least on the bike stand. Ann had gone to church and the store, and while she was there I also took down the camping gear and placed it in a pile to sort through in the evening. I went to Aldi for some diet soda and to Harbor Freight to get a torque wrench (will try again with this model), some microfiber cloths to use as shop towels, rechargeable batteries to try and put in the camping solar lights, and some more peg board hooks for hanging up tools. Then it was a quiet middle of the afternoon, as the temperature got close to 100 deg.

06-22-2024 Ride

Woke up earlier than usual, don't know why. Maybe it was the caffeine I had the previous day. I got ready for the bike ride and, just as I was leaving, noticed that my Wahoo was running out of charge. So I took a cable with me, left a little early, and pushed the pace a little bit to get there sooner. Through the neighborhood, could feel some tightness in my groin and shoulders from the previous day's hike. Up to RB Rd and through the 4S Ranch neighborhood, riding up to Ralphs Ranch Rd before turning there and taking the typical route from that point. I didn't start my Fitbit until I was about 4.7 miles into the ride. When I got to the 4S Target, Ray and Perse were already there, and Perse let me plug in my Wahoo to his car power. On this ride, there were (at the start): Ray, Perse, Nel, Fritz, Jed, Robert (Fritz's friend), Zac, Justin (Zac's riding friend), Arnold, Eric, Francis, and Cam (it had been a while since he rode with us). We took a standard route, out Camino del Sur to San Dieguito Rd to El Camino Real to Via de la Valle to the coast. From the start, Zac (who rode from his home in west Mira Mesa) was pushing the pace, and it became infectious. Lots of people attacking all the way to the bottom of Three Witches, where we slowed to regroup before continuing. Somewhere before the turn Aaron joined the group as well. We had a decent pace line on the next stretch. At the next turn, we heard that Robert had had a flat, so Fritz and Zac rode back to help. Robert ended up turning around (he was running tubeless). After we turned onto Via de la Valle, Romeo and his friend Ed joined us, having ridden from Oceanside to meet up with us on the route. Justin is also a strong rider, and he took turns in the lead in the early part of this ride. After the turn onto PCH heading north, we had a brief break, then we started out at a pretty normal pace, maybe a little slow. That didn't last, as Francis led the first attack and a bunch of riders sprinted into a lead group. I was able to hang onto this group and lead at times. Around Cardiff, Zac latched onto the wheel of an e-bike rider, so we cruised behind him at 25 mph for a good while before getting into Encinitas. The group kept up its high pace all the way into the outskirts of Carlsbad. We stopped for our longer break at the Starbuck's, and by this time the sun had come out, so it was going to be warmer on the return. I held an average speed over 20 mph at the turnaround point. The high speed group continued on the return, with Zac leading the charge and me (and others) trying to stay on his wheel. Once we got into Encinitas, Aaron, Arnold, Jed, I, and some others turned at Encinitas Blvd and took that short, steep little climb by the Moonlight Beach parking lot at speed, that one hurt. Aaron and Arnold had an all-out sprint on the little climb up into Solana Beach, and my legs were toast by then, I had no chance of keeping up with them. We regrouped at the turn back onto Via de la Valle, and I ended up leading the group over to El Camino Real. The paceline on the return route of San Dieguito Rd was more ragged, with only short stays in the front and not everybody understood the value of the rotation approach. Another stop at the gas station before the base of Three Witches, where it was starting to get hot. When I got off my bike there, my left leg cramped up and it took me a moment to stretch it out. On the climb, I had no chance of keeping up with Aaron and Zac, so I settled into a milder, survival speed and paced Arnold up the hill right behind me. Even still, it was a real workout at the top, where I was running out of energy and had to hang on to finish the climb in decent style. On the stretch back to the meet-up point, Aaron and Zac again distanced the rest of us, but I put distance between me and the others as well. Aaron slowed down near the end, so I put in a big effort, closed the gap, and passed him before the turn into the parking lot. Felt good about having enough left to make that happen at the end of a tough ride. Then I rode down to Marco's Pizza, following the now standard route to Camino San Bernardo and over to RB Rd, then down to W Bernardo Dr. I wasn't in the mood for pizza, but the soda I drank really hit the spot. It was a nice gathering, a number of the riders showed up. When I left, I wanted to get past a metric century, so I rode down the hill on W Bernardo Dr and to the park before turning around and riding back up Aguamiel Rd. That last little climb also really hurt, and I was gassed at the end.

Avg speed = 19.7 mph (my analysis program). Total mileage = 62.7 mi
Bisikleta route avg speed = 20.4 mph
Avg power = 163 W. Weighted avg power = 187 W
Total elevation gain = 2260'
Avg heartrate = 142 bpm (Coospo !), 121 bpm (Fitbit, ?)

After I got home, I took a shower (felt great) and had a light lunch (wasn't that hungry). Quiet afternoon for the most part. I finished cleaning the chain for my old bike and put it in the heated wax bath for an hour or so. Removed it and left it to cool down overnight. Ann and I watched the movie Yesterday in the evening before it went off Netflix. I really enjoyed the movie the second time, it's completely unbelievable but has a sweet premise and redemption at the end.

06-21-2024 Hike

Got up pretty early to prep everything for the hike with Joe. Put in my water bottle and loaded some snacks in my pockets as well. I rode over to the cul de sac by the driving range near the mall, and Joe was already there. So we got our packs on and started out at 6:30, earlier than planned. It was overcast at the start, and we chatted for the first 2 miles or so on our way to the Bernardo Peak trail. Right before we turned onto this trail, it started to tilt up. The nature of the trail was generally to have steeper climbing sections followed by flatter places where we could recover or walk faster. As soon as the uphills started, I got out ahead of Joe, walking at my comfortable pace. Shoulders were fine, but I could feel the effects of carrying a 25 pound or so pack. The trail went by some nice houses before its grade increased around mile 3, and it was steeper all the way up to the top, at mile 3.8. When we got to the top, I broke out the camping burner and heated up water to make us some tea. It took us a little less than 2 hours to get to the top, including a couple of breaks of about 5 minutes or so. We chatted and rested at the top for about half an hour before packing everything back up and starting down. I thought that Joe would keep up with me more on the downhill, but he was having some gastric distress and that slowed him down a little. So we didn't take a break on the way back down. I waited for him to catch up several times, and we walked together between miles 6 and 7. Then I got ahead of him as I pushed to finish up. My shoulders were definitely feeling the strain near the end, legs were fine. We got back a little before 10:30, having come back down in about an hour and a half. I used my new trekking poles for the first time on the steeper uphill and downhill sections, and they worked fine. They are not super sturdy, so they're better for guiding my path than they are for leaning on. The full hike was 7.7 miles, and my moving time was right at 3 hours. When we backpack, I would love to limit the total daily hiking (i.e. moving) time to 6 hours or so. Leaving early and getting into camp with time to relax a little bit is highly desirable for me.

Total distance = 7.74 mi
Avg pace = 23:17/mi
Elapsed moving time = 3:00:29

Ann and the others were gone when I got home, so I chilled out for a bit, had something to eat, then made oatmeal cookies to take to the Brewskis event at Glen and Cathy Hopkins' house. I also bought some beer at Baron's to bring along and put it in the freezer to cool down. The Brewskis event was nicer than I thought it would be. I saw some old acquaintances, including Glen and Cathy, Glenn and Liz Haddick, Frank and Ilian Drogo, Jason Arbeiter, John Page, Fung Sun Fei, and Tim Carlin. I met and talked to Jeff Zampell's parents, Carol and Rick, both of whom worked at HP. They are nice folks. Also chatted for some time with Guillermo Yanez, who is one of the retirement activity board leaders. Charles Keith was there, he's a little odd, plays Uncle Sam in the Poway July Fourth celebrations and is a little obsessed with taking and printing pictures. Avi was there as well, we talked for just a bit with Ruth Childers, Win's wife. I left as the party was getting bigger to get home and head over to Cruisin' Grand with Ann, Kathy, and Heather. I was pretty tired by then, but we walked slowly, and it was a low-effort event.

06-20-2024 Swim/Ride

Woke up and had some breakfast before riding over to the WWC to meet Avi for a swim. It was my endurance day, so I swam the normal 2000 yd protocol without stopping. Finished in about 37 min, I think I counted my laps correctly. This was my fastest time at this distance. I felt really exhausted on the sixth length of the pool, especially in my legs, but I pushed through it and kept going, although at a slower pace. Was around 24 strokes per length in the first half and 28 strokes in the last 500 yds. So there is definitely more work to be done to increase my ability to keep my stroke count down. Then I headed home, had a little more food, and started to work on bike stuff in the garage while the gas line replacement crew was in front of our house. I swapped the front and back tires on my new bike, replaced the left shifter battery, and cleaned the cassette and chainrings with the pipe cleaners that Blair gave me. Next, I started the deep clean of the drivetrain on my old bike, which entailed cleaning the chain thoroughly, then setting it to soak in mineral spirits overnight. I also removed the cassette and took it apart to clean it well, it's about as clean as it has been in a long time. Also cleaned off the chainrings and the jockey wheels on the rear derailleur. This weekend, I'll wax the chain and put it back on. While in the garage, I put some more stuff in my backpack, including the things needed to make tea for me and Joe on our hike tomorrow morning. I watched some TV in the early afternoon, and later in the afternoon I rode over to meet Blair for a bike ride. Through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd, then over to W Bernardo Dr and a straight shot to HP from there. My bike is still creaking, and I think it's in the front fork. When it's creaking, the creaking goes away when I remove my hands from the handlebars. The noise comes and goes too, not sure why. Once we met up in the back parking lot, we headed out Bernardo Center Dr and down the hill to get to Carmel Valley Rd, taking these little climbs fairly slowly. I was trying to stay in Zones 1 and 2 for most of this ride, was generally successful. We ended up staying on this road all the way down to the 56 bike path. Blair said he was feeling good, so we stretched the distance a little bit. Then we took the bike path all the way back to Salmon River Rd, using it to get over to Paseo Montalban and then to Black Mountain Rd. Blair was tiring by this point, I could tell, so we slowed down and kept going. Back up to Carmel Valley Rd, and from there we retraced our route back to the meet-up point. It was actually a nice day, not too hot but a little breezy. Home for me the normal way, and I felt fine at the end.

Total elevation gain = 1760'
Avg heartrate = 113 bpm (Coospo), 120 bpm (Fitbit)

I ate dinner when I got home, with Kathy and Heather, Ann wasn't hungry. Then it was a quiet evening. I did take pictures of the layout of our front yard for documentation purposes, in the event that they come into the yard and start disrupting things. (<>!)

06-19-2024 Ride

Got up fairly early and got ready for a bike ride. It was overcast at the start of the ride and stayed that way until very near the end. I headed through the neighborhood on the bike with my new chain and adjusted headset. The drivetrain runs very smoothly, and the bike feels a little stiffer without the play around the front fork. It still creaks a little, especially as I am getting underway from a standing stop. I had a general idea about where I wanted to ride but made turn decisions as I went along. Up to RB Rd, turning right there and riding over to Camino del Sur to keep heading west. I took this road down to Carmel Valley Rd and turned right there. Just after the turn, I lost a water bottle and had to go back to retrieve it. I was riding at tempo for most of this ride and feeling the effects of the higher level of effort. All the way to the 56 bike path, turning left there and riding back up to Camino del Sur. Here I turned right and rode over to Park Village Dr, turning left there and starting the gradual climb. I noticed that my left shifter battery was low at this point, and it wouldn't let me shift into a lower gear. So I took a break, had a granola bar, and while I was waiting it started working again. I decided to nurse it to the end of the ride if possible, so I kept going over to Black Mountain Rd, turning right there and taking it until it turned into Kearny Villa Rd. I stayed on this road until turning around at the second overpass, near MCAS Miramar.  Back to Miramar Rd, where I stopped for a second break and had a banana. Then I turned and rode up Pomerado Rd to the top, then down into Poway. The bike seemed to handle well on the descent, no wobbles, and it felt fast. I stayed on this road until turning right onto Metate Ln to get over to Community Rd, where I turned left. My legs were starting to feel the effects of the tempo riding, so it was a struggle to keep up the higher effort. To Twin Peaks Rd, turning left there and riding back to Pomerado Rd. Then it was up and down to RB Rd, where the traffic lights were out in the area. I rode to Bernardo Center Dr and realized I wasn't going to get to 45 miles. But with a balky shifter, I didn't want to prolong the ride. So I rode over Duenda Rd, turned right on W Bernardo Dr and took it down to Aguamiel Rd home from there. Legs were fine, muscles were tired.

Avg speed = 17.6 mph. Total mileage = 43.3 mi
Avg power = 161 W. Weighted avg power =190 W
Total elevation gain = 2520'
Avg heartrate = 124 bpm (Coospo)

In the afternoon, I went to the hospital for my ED volunteer shift. Nothing too unusual. I helped a guy find his wife, who had wandered away from where she was supposed to be. Was a little slow around 2:30, but it picked up, as it usually does, near the end of the shift. Was a quiet evening, Ann made a fire and we ate S'mores. I was pretty tired from this busy day.

06-18-2024 Swim/Ride

Got up and walked, for a change, over to the WWC for my swim. The pool was crowded again at the start but not as much as the previous day. I focused on lengthening my stroke for the most part, did some work with the swim pads to increase its power, but that is going to take some time. I just don't have a lot of upper body strength, and it shows here. I can start out well in the first 25 yds, but by the end of the 100 I am struggling to keep any power going. Did about 1500 yds of swimming, and I put down 32 minutes as my swimming time, although I took a number of breaks and was generally slow at the turns. Walked home and had breakfast, then I got ready for a bike ride. I avoided the construction in the neighborhood by heading north across the freeway to BVP. Up to Mary Ln, and then the climbing started. The Mary Ln climb is about 1.7 miles long and has some steeper sections. I got up to the top and then turned left onto Summit Dr, taking a nice, winding descent to San Pasqual Valley Rd. I turned right there and rode up to Old San Pasqual Valley Rd, which indicated it was a dead end. Signs were correct. I rode down to its end and then climbed back up, then a little further up by turning right on Cool Ridge Heights Rd and taking it until it dead-ended as well. Back down to San Pasqual Valley Rd, turning right and riding to Highgrove Dr, which turned out to be another dead end. Back down and right again to get to Summit Dr, where I turned right and found a road that went somewhere. It was a gentle climb up to a high point, and I turned left onto Idaho Ave to ride down to Citrus Ave. This is a fun descent, straight and the road is in decent shape. I turned right at the bottom and rode over to Mountain View Dr, where on an impulse I turned right again, just to see where it ended up. This climb had a little steepness to it, but I got up okay. I think this is the road that indeed goes through to Cloverdale Rd, but it goes through private property and thus isn't passable. I turned around and started riding back to Citrus Ave. Saw a turkey along the side of the road, my picture of it wasn't so great. I stayed on Mountain View Dr back down to Glenridge Rd, by the high school, to get back to BVP. Headed south to Boyle Ave and took it to Rose St and then over to Oak Hill Dr, where I turned left and followed the old route to yoga practice. Back to San Pasqual Valley Rd, turning right and then taking a left onto Grand Ave. I rode through town and got onto Centre City Pkwy heading south. From there, it was home the normal way across the freeway (I took the freeway on the way over as well), then up the last two little climbs. I had my second-fastest time, 7 seconds slower than my PR, on the climb up to the park. Wanted to get to 25 miles and 2000' of climbing, so I rode up W Bernardo Dr to Nevoso Way and then looped back to Aguamiel Rd. It was just starting to get warm at the end of the ride, but the temperature during the ride was actually pretty nice. This was a steady climbing day, no general hard pushes or much tempo riding.

Avg speed = 14.9 mph. Total mileage = 25.3 mi
Avg power = 134 W. Weighted avg power = 172 W
Total elevation gain = 2010'
Avg heartrate = 122 bpm (Coospo), 129 bpm (Fitbit)

The others were gone when I got home, so I watched some TV, had a fairly light lunch, then cleaned up some of my mess in the garage.

After work, Blair came over to take a look at my bike. I didn't have a lot of hope for success. I took the old chain off, and we compared it to the new one. A little more lateral flex in the old one, but other than that they were similar. He measured the stretch of the old chain and saw it was a little more than 0.5, which gave me hope, since that is the level of stretch where changing the chain is recommended before it damages the rest of the drivetrain. We then took off the cassette and looked at it. Everything looked fine after he explained what we should be looking for, including beveled edges of some teeth and sharp teeth in other areas, both to improve the speed and smoothness of switching between gears. I had thought some of the teeth were worn to sharp points, but he showed me the pattern of the gear teeth, and it made more sense. Then he put the new chain back on the bike, taking care to ensure the curved part of the links were next to the gears, for both the chain and the master link. This is probably where I screwed up. It was smooth on the stand when we spun it (he also used the chain breaker tool to lock the master link). So I rode it and it worked! I only figured out the reason later as described above. Importantly, he then noticed that my front fork was loose, and he offered to help figure out how to tighten it back up. We both worked to determine how to loosen the fork and access the bearings. It involves loosening the screw on the collar, then gradually spreading out the fork tube from the stem. There are two spacers that are two pieces each, so that they can be removed without taking the fork off. Very clever. Once those were off, he was able to get at the tip and bottom bearings, cleaning and lubricating them with his ceramic bearing grease (I can use regular grease instead). Everything was cleaned and lubricated, but he couldn't remove the play in the front fork when he put it back together. He figured out (!!!) what the hole in the top of the stem was for, and that was key to the solution. There is a special tool that comes with the bike that can be turned to push the bearings together and tighten the fork up. It was in the shipping box, along with some of the other tools that came with the bike (including special bits for some of the components). Once we found the tool, he used it to snug down the fork, ensuring that it wasn't over-tight, which would cause the steering to bind up. Then he torqued the headset locking screw back up, and voila! The creaking that I thought was coming from the drivetrain was gone. Wow! The bike now shifts well and doesn't creak. I was ecstatic. We went to Ponce's for dinner. Minor note there, I had gotten a Groupon for the restaurant, but I didn't notice it was for the Kensington location. Minor issue after the major bike repair success. He blew off a lot of steam about the turmoil at work, and I listened and offered some advice and guidance. All in all, a very successful evening, thanks to his bike mechanic intuition.

06-17-2024 Hike/Swim

Got up for an early hike with loaded backpack, including trekking poles to see if they would stay put. Hiked around the neighborhood for a little over an hour. Then I got ready to go to the WWC for a swim when it opened. I was in the water when Avi called to me over the fence, so I went out and got him. All the lanes were take so we shared one. I practiced lengthening my stroke with some success, but it is a bigger workout for me, so I took lots of breaks. We also did some speed training with the swim pads, and that was quite tiring. Longer breaks there between 50s, mostly. Then we did some 100s to lengthen the effort, and that took energy. I borrowed his swim buoy to help me focus on my stroke. Need to get one for myself. We finished with a 500, approximately. We both lost count of the laps, so we might have added a lap. Did that in over 10 minutes, which would be slow for a 500 for me. I had fewer strokes at the beginning than at the end, when I was tiring out. I counted it as 1500 yds, but I'm not sure of the real distance or time. This was a swim workout that I really felt in my shoulders throughout the day. Had some breakfast when I got home. Ann and the others went to the botanical gardens, and I stayed home. I worked on the sprinklers, repairing a number of spray nozzles that had clogged. The bed closest to the house now is operating as designed, so I turned it back on. Did some Python program reading online about interactive charts with mpld3. That's going to be challenging. Got a burrito for lunch from Cotijas. In the afternoon, I tried to get my new chain to work without skipping, no luck. I ended up ordering a new rear cassette, maybe that will solve the problem. Read in the afternoon as well and watched some TV, including swimming. Quiet evening.

06-16-2024 Ride

Got up (<>) and got ready for a bike ride. Originally, I was going to ride with Jim, but Rob asked if I was interested in a morning ride. I invited Jim as well, but he replied late that he didn't want to slow us down. I let him know that wouldn't be a problem, but he backed out anyway. I was ready to go far ahead of the time needed to get over to Rob's place, so I put more miles in ahead of meeting him. Through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd, then over to W Bernardo Dr, taking it up to RB Rd. I turned left and rode up to Martincoit Rd, turning right there and taking this short, steep climb until the top. Then I turned around and rode down Stone Canyon Rd back to Pomerado Rd. Over to Bernardo Heights Pkwy, and up this climb, slowly, to get to Paseo Lucido, turning left there and riding up to Calle Suacillo to take a right and then another right on Avenida Alcachofe. This took me to the parking lot by Rob's place, where I met him by his garage. Isabelle came out as we were getting ready to leave, she is cleaning out their stored stuff in the garage. Rob and I headed back to Bernardo Heights Pkwy, taking it back down to Pomerado Rd and turning left. We rode all the way down to Highland Valley Rd, turning right there and taking the flats, then the first climb. I stayed on his wheel for the climb, and he made it, slowly. He told me at the top (we stopped by the entrance to Mia Marie) that his lung capacity is about 2/3 what it was before his accident. So he has some recovery still to go. We rode back down, slowly and taking our time on the curving descent. Then it was back to Pomerado Rd, retracing our outbound route. Toward the latter part of the ride, Rob was obviously tiring and slowing down, so we kept the pace he was comfortable at. Back to his garage, and after a short chat with him and Isabelle, I headed home. Took Paseo Lucido all the way around to near the base of Bernardo Heights Pkwy, then Bernardo Center Dr to Duenda Rd and home from there. I was glad it was a Zone 2 ride for me, my legs didn't seem to have a lot of push in them on this day.

Avg speed = 13.9 mph. Total mileage = 29.3 mi
Avg power = 123 W. Weighted avg power = 152 W
Total elevation gain = 2270'

06-15-2024 Ride

Woke up and did a little blogging before getting ready for the Bisikleta ride. I headed over to the starting point using the original shortest route until I got there, then I had some extra time, so I rode down to Babcock St and turned left there to get to Paseo del Sur. Another left and back to the 4S Target. It was sunny when I left home and foggy at the start, but I knew the fog wouldn't last. On this ride at the start, there were: Jhonar, Perse, Arnold, Fritz, Nel, Jamil, and Eric. We began by taking the reverse of the little route through 4S Ranch that I often ride on the way over, then left from Alva Rd onto RB Rd. Down to W Bernardo Dr, taking a left there and riding down until we crossed the freeway and it turned into Pomerado Rd. Then we rode back up to RB Rd and turned left to get onto the old time trial route for a while. I pushed hard on the last segment of Espola Rd up to Poway Rd and set a Strava PR (3:20, 280 W, 153 bpm). Down to the turn onto Garden Rd, where we stopped at the 7-Eleven for our break. Originally, Jhonar and Perse were going to separate from the group here, but they decided to ride a little further with us. So we took Garden Rd over to Sycamore Canyon Rd and turned right for the climb up to the trailhead. Again, I pushed hard all the way through, especially on the steep section before the underpass, and I set another PR (10:56, 229 W, 150 W). During this climb, Perse, Fritz, and Jhonar turned around and started heading back (Jhonar rode to his daughter's dance studio off Poway Rd to practice for a father-daughter dance routine next week). So we were five riders riding back down the hill to Sabre Springs Pkwy, where we took the little exit ramp and started heading west on this road. I rode as the sweeper for this stretch, with Nel for most of it. We descended until turning right onto Pomerado Rd, taking it over to Oak Knoll Rd to get to Poway Rd. Headed west until we got to Springbrook Dr to turn left for our last significant climb of the day. Arnold sprinted ahead when he saw the beginning of the climb, but I knew that more was coming, so I dialed in a steady pace and eventually caught up with him. Set a PR (4:45, 251 W, 151 bpm) on this climb as well, completing the trifecta of all-out efforts on our three notable climbs of the day. That felt pretty good. Then we headed down Scripps-Poway Pkwy until we got to the bike path that parallels the freeway and headed north back to Poway Rd. Up to Sabre Springs Pkwy, taking a left and staying on the new time trial route to get to Camino del Norte, then back to the starting point from there. It was pretty warm by the end of the ride, and the westerly breeze was in force. So, I didn't stay long at the finish before heading back, turning on Dove Canyon Rd this time to get back to RB Rd, then home via the W Bernardo Dr route. Was pretty slow on this last stretch, I had put a workout in on this ride, leading the group for most of it. But my legs were fine at the end, just tired (had a short nap in the afternoon as a result).

Avg speed = 15.9 mph. Total mileage = 50.2 mi
Avg power = 141 W. Weighted avg power = 175 W
Total elevation gain = 3270'
Avg heartrate = 124 bpm (Coospo), 125 bpm (Fitbit)

I had something to eat when I got home, and it wasn't too long before Ann returned with Kathy and Heather. I sat with them and chatted while Ann made pasta salad and they ate, then I took a break upstairs. Emily and Caleb came over for dinner. We had grilled food, and I did the grilling. We spilled oil on the patio, and it's going to be a mess to clean up. Was a nice conversation with them, they are heading off to Las Vegas on Sunday for 4 days at the Mirage before it closes for good.

An update on books. I finished East of Eden. It was decent, Steinbeck called it his magnum opus, but I don't think it was a good as The Grapes of Wrath. I started reading Hugh Howey's Shift, which is a prequel of sorts to the Wool books. It provides some of the back story about how and why the siloes were built in the first place, not very believable, and some stories of people in the siloes.

06-14-2024 Swim

Woke up (<>) and got ready for my swim. Headed over to the WWC, where I met Avi, who joined me for the first time. Maybe because he was there, I swam faster than usual, although I paused between the segments, and that probably helped. Finished with perhaps the fastest time for the 2000 yd protocol that I've had. He gave me some pointers about how to improve my time, the main ones being to focus on longer, more efficient strokes (aiming for 20 strokes to go the length of the pool), speed training (45 seconds for a 50, followed by 15 seconds of rest), keeping my legs up near the top of the water (less drag). That gives me something to work with, we'll see if it helps reduce my times. Then I headed home and helped clean the house for Kathy's and Heather's visit. I deep-cleaned the refrigerator, which took about an hour. Then I cleaned the kitchen surfaces and wet-mopped the downstairs. I also cleaned the dust out of the floor fan and fixed the screen in Emily's room. After these tasks, I set about waxing my bike chain, which I had cleaned the previous day. The waxing went fine, although it took longer for the wax to melt than I thought it would (the crock pot worked). After the waxing, I spent some time freeing up the links and cleaning the front chainrings (it looks like they can be removed and replaced after all, I'll probably have to do this due to wear in the gear teeth). Then I put the chain on and gave it a test ride. The chain jumped on a number of gears in the back, wasn't sure why, but it's probably because the links aren't moving freely enough. I did check to make sure that the rear cassette was well seated on the hub, and it was. So I put my old chain on the bike and will work on freeing up the links some more before giving it another go. Overall, it was frustrating. Not sure if chain waxing is for me (it kinda reminds me of switching to tubeless), but I'll work with Blair on Tuesday to see if we can fix the kinks.

06-13-2024 Hike/Swim/Ride

It was a fairly busy day. I got up quite early and went for an hourlong hike with my loaded backpack. Felt a little better at the end than the previous hike, although I was hiking mostly on roads and it wasn't as steep as the trails. After I got home, I got ready and rode over to the WWC for my morning swim. Standard 2000 yd protocol, finished in well under 40 minutes. I felt good with the swim snorkel but struggled while wearing swim pads and no snorkel, was floundering in the water at times. I saw Kevin at the pool and he talked about the possibility of going ocean swimming in July. We'll see what happens. After I rode home, I tackled cleaning up the rest of the back patio. It was more work than I thought it would be, but it looks pretty good after the thorough cleaning. I also whacked back one of the ground cover plants that was encroaching on another plant. It was starting to get warm in the direct sunlight. I had some lunch, then in the afternoon I attached a support brace to the curtain rod in my office, to hold the heavier curtains that Ann bought for Kathy's and Heather's visit. Then I took the chain off my new bike and gave it a thorough cleaning, leaving it eventually to sit overnight in mineral spirits. I also thoroughly cleaned the cassette and the jockey wheels. Tomorrow is chain waxing day. A brief respite, then I got ready to ride over to HP and meet Blair for a late afternoon ride. Took the standard route to HP this time, but I was there early enough to ride around the campus to the back parking lot. Still, I waited a couple of minutes for Blair to show up. I'd borrowed his stud finder, and I gave it back to him. We headed out Bernardo Center Dr to Camino del Norte, turning left there and riding up to Carmel Mountain Rd. Then a right on Rancho Carmel Dr and down it to Sabre Springs Pkwy. We followed that road all the way to Springhurst Dr, turning left and getting over to Poway Rd. Headed east, and with the afternoon breeze it was smooth sailing on these flats. Over to Oak Knoll Rd, taking it to Pomerado Rd, turning right and then left onto Metate Ln. Blair was riding stronger than the previous week. We headed up to Community Rd and turned left, taking it to Twin Peaks Rd. Up to this point, we were generally favored in altitude and wind direction, but it wasn't too bad on the return. To Camino del Norte and back to the back parking lot the normal way from there. I rode home the normal way as well.

Avg speed = 14.8 mph. Total mileage = 21.1 mi
Avg power = 115 W. Weighted avg power = 149 W
Total elevation gain = 1330'
Avg heartrate = 112 bpm (Coospo), 123 bpm (Fitbit)

Had some dinner when I got home and watched the season 2 final episode of Foundation. Then a quick shower and a quiet rest of the evening.

06-12-2024 Ride

Got up pretty early, cleaned the kitchen, then headed out for a bike ride, intending to push the pace more like a tempo ride. Through the neighborhood to RB Rd, then over to Camino del Sur, turning right and taking it down to San Dieguito Rd. On this stretch and down the hill, it was heavily misting, and I took the downhill cautiously, not wanting my wheels to skid out from under me. When I got into the flats, it was dry, and I made decent, although not outstanding, time here. Over to El Camino Real, turning left and riding back up into Del Mar Heights. I didn't feel like I was in top form on the climb, kept it steady though. Down to the 56 bike path, and near the turn I noticed that my left shifter paddle wasn't shifting. So when I got onto the bike path, I stopped, had a banana, and replaced the shifter battery. Problem solved. On the bike path, just past the neighborhood cul de sac, I saw Aaron riding in to work going the opposite way. He noticed me as well, but we didn't stop. I rode back to Carmel Valley Rd, turned left and took it up to Camino del Sur. I didn't feel like I was working hard here, but I set a PR (12:25, 195 W, 133 bpm) on this section. Left on Camino del Sur and over to Paseo del Sur, turning right there. I was keeping a tempo pace but not blowing myself up. Through the Del Sur neighborhood and over to Nighthawk Ln, then Del Sur Ridge Rd to Lone Quail Rd.  Home via RB Rd to W Bernardo Dr and the normal way from there. Felt good after the ride, not tired at all.

Avg speed = 17.2 mph. Total mileage = 32.9 mi
Avg power = 157 W. Weighted avg power = 188 W
Total elevation gain = 1790'
Avg heartrate = 119 bpm (Coospo), 134 bpm (Fitbit)

After my ride, I went out onto the patio and started to remove the weeds and accumulated dirt. I got about a third of it done before I needed to stop and get ready to meet John at his house to go to the ballgame. Rode over to his place on my scooter, I was a little late in getting started, and so I was late getting there. But we made good time on the way down and got to the restaurant where we were supposed to meet up with the others right on time. Dennis and Karen were right behind us, but Kenda and Ross were delayed with caring for Alex at Rady Children's Hospital. They got there a little after 12:30. We had eaten by then, so they had a beer before we all walked over to the ballpark. Got into our seats just as the first batter was up. It was a good game. The Padres starter Michael King had 12 strikeouts but a lot of pitches, so he was pulled in the sixth when the first two batters got on base. The A's ended up scoring three runs to go ahead (two homers by Padres players before that). They got another run in the eighth to lead by two runs, then the same two players ended up hitting home runs, one in the eighth and one a walk-off in the ninth, to win it 5-4. It was a back-and-forth game with the right team winning, so a good day. Some traffic on the way back, I was glad John was driving.

06-11-2024 Ride

Got up and got ready for my morning volunteer shift at the hospital, having switched because of the baseball game on Wednesday afternoon. I remembered my card this time but forgot to bring a mask, so I picked one up at the front desk. Arrived around 8:15, and when I got into the ED it was really quiet, just a couple of rooms in the main section occupied. There were some folks in the back rooms as well, but they didn't need much assistance. As the morning progressed, the rooms gradually filled up with patients. I got busier later, talked to some nice folks who were in the rooms and did a fair amount of cleaning. Met two new (to me) nurses, Lyn and Eric, and I introduced myself to Mary, who works in the ED admin/billing office. Overall, the time passed fairly quickly. I stayed a bit late to help one of the patients to his car and clean the room afterward. Had some lunch after I got home, and later in the afternoon I tackled trimming the bushes in the front side yard, which were really overgrown. In the evening, I rode over to Rob's place to meet him for a short bike ride. Through the neighborhood to Matinal Rd, then over to W Bernardo Dr to get to RB Rd. Right on Bernardo Center Dr, then I took Bernardo Heights Pkwy to Paseo Lucido, then met him by his garage. He had just gotten his bike back that day, it looked in good shape. We headed back to Paseo Lucido, turning left and down to Bernardo Heights Pkwy, where we turned right and rode down to Pomerado Rd. Left there, then a right onto Stone Canyon Rd, taking it up until it teed into Martincoit Rd. Rob did pretty well on the climbs, and there were some short steep sections to navigate. He was slower but didn't conk out. Left at the tee, then down the hill to Rostrata Rd, turning right and then left onto Orchard Bend Rd, which took us to Espola Rd. We turned right and rode just a little bit until we turned around at Bridlewood Rd. From there, it was Espola Rd back to Pomerado Rd, left there, then back to Bernardo Heights Pkwy, retracing our route to his garage from there. He did fine on this short ride, was more cautious than usual, but that is to be expected. It was good to see him out on the road again, more healing needed and work to be done to get back into top cycling shape. I rode home the same way I came over until I got to RB Rd, where I continued on Bernardo Center Dr to Duenda Rd and home from there.

Avg speed = 13.9 mph. Total mileage = 15.4 mi
Avg power = 132 W. Weighted avg power = 166 W
Total elevation gain = 1400'
Avg heartrate = 112 bpm (Coospo), 123 bpm (Fitbit)

I was pretty hungry, had a big dinner and watched some TV before calling it an evening.

06-10-2024 Swim/Hike

Got up (<>) and got ready to head over to the WWC for my morning swim. I did 2500 yds this time for the first time in a while, and I really felt it in the last 200 yds in my shoulders and arms. Standard protocol for this distance, finished in a little over 50 minutes, and did the first 2000 in right around 40 minutes. Then I went home, had some breakfast, and hung out for a bit before heading to get some hardware. Initially went, via a circuitous route, to The Home Depot, as I was real-time planning on how to make a ceiling storage space for my Canyon bicycle box. I ended up getting a couple of thick shelf brackets and two 4' long 1"x2" boards. Then I went to Ace Hardware and got a possible solution to hold the curtain rod in my old office up in the middle. Not sure it will work. It took me about an hour to install the bracket-and-board storage in the garage, but I think it turned out like I had planned (I have been thinking about ways to create this storage for a long time, glad it's finally done). Then I had some lunch and watched a Dauphine bike race TV summary and an episode of Reservation Dogs. Next, I tackled cleaning up my old office, and that took another hour or so. But it looks neater and cleaner. I needed to get my steps in, so I did a hike, with the loaded backpack, over on the trails on the way to RB Community Park. Going up the steeper sections of the trails with the load on my back, in afternoon sunny conditions, was more of a chore than I expected, and I was glad to be done. In the late afternoon, we drove down to Fenton Pkwy, where we caught the trolley to SDSU for the Vampire Weekend concert at Cal Coast Credit Union Amphitheater. Loded the new Pronto app on our phones for paying for trolley tickets, but neither of us could get it to work. So we rode over anyway, no problems. Had a small picnic by the Student Union before we went into the concert venue. The tickets were center stage but back a ways. I had brought my binoculars, and they came in handy during the show at times. The opening act was an instrumental swing guitar trio, La Low, and they were mildly entertaining, albeit a bit repetitive in their music. Then Vampire Weekend, the remaining 3 original members came onstage and played three songs before the curtain dropped to reveal the rest of the band (who was playing along on the first three songs anyway). They had a really annoying stage lighting system with incredibly bright arc lights in a line that would periodically flash and strobe. I took to wearing my sunglasses and pulling them down when the lights started acting up. The band played a long time and covered all of their big hits, along with many tracks from their latest album Only God Was Above Us. Music was generally good, occasionally so loud that all I could hear was distorted sound. I wasn't a fan of their treatment of Sympathy, one of my favorite songs of theirs, and they could have left out the country-influenced medley that they included, along with a giant cornhole game that an audience member got to try out. He missed all three tries, but Ezra Koenig still gave him $300. Kinda hokey. They had to rush their encore a little bit, since they were coming up on the 11:00 curfew. Koenig's attempt to cover John Mellencamp's Jack & Diane was hilarious, he obviously didn't know the song. They did better on their cover of The Cure's Just Like Heaven. I don't think Ann enjoyed the show so much. She liked some of the more poppy songs but is not a fan of distorted guitars, and they had more of that from their new album. Still, an enjoyable concert that I'm glad we went to.  Here's the setlist.

06-09-2024 Hike/Ride

Woke up and went for an early morning hike around the neighborhood, wearing my camping backpack containing two gallons of water. Shoulders held up well on the 2.5 mile hike, but I could feel the weight on them. More practice needed to toughen them up. Then I had some breakfast and got ready for an easy bike ride. Headed down by the park and then over to Highland Valley Rd, taking it through the flats and up the beginning of the first climb before turning around and riding back. I had almost gotten to Pomerado Rd when Rob Fogarty, riding the other way on his mountain bike, called out to me. So I turned around and rode along the flats again, with him, before turning around and riding back solo at fairly high speed. Left on Pomerado Rd and up to Higa Pl, turning right there and riding through the retired folks neighborhood to get to Bernardo Center Dr. I turned left there and rode up the hill by HP, turning right on W Bernardo Dr and finishing the ride via the usual route.

Avg speed = 16.2 mph. Total mileage = 20.6 mi
Avg power = 137 W. Weighted avg power = 160 W
Total elevation gain = 1060'
Avg heartrate = 129 bpm (Fitbit, reading high)

I cleaned up a little bit of the kitchen afterwards, then relaxed for a while before lunch. In the afternoon, we had McCaslin Family Book Club to discuss The Three Body Problem. Everybody got something out of reading the book and found that, near the end, it was more of a page turner. Then, we went over to the WWC to spend time with Perse Bolano and his family and friends celebrating his son Troy's HS graduation. Other Bisikleta folks were there, so that's who we hung out with. After we got back, I planted the last two plants to go into the wood chip beds.

06-08-2024 Ride

Got up earlier than usual on a Saturday, mostly used the time to get ready for the ride. Even still, I left home early. Through the neighborhood and then the long way through the 4S Ranch neighborhood to Four Gee Rd, turning right onto Camino del Sur and riding up to Garretson St before turning into the 4S Target parking lot. Perse was there early, as he usually is on the days he rides with us. Others trickled in. On this day, we had the following riders: Perse, Nel, Joey, Charlie, Eric, Jamil, and Jed. We rode an old favorite coastal route. Weather was overcast for about 80% of the ride. Down Camino del Sur to San Dieguito Rd, turning right and riding down and through the flats (pretty well organized pace line there) over to El Camino Real, then over to Via de la Valle, which we used to get to the Coast Hwy. At one point, Joey, who was a couple of riders in front of me, hit some bad pavement in the bike lane, and I thought she was going to go down. But she held onto it, thankfully, and we continued. A short break at the turn, then we continued, largely together for a while, through Solana Beach, until we dropped down and the speed picked up. I was behind the group and had to pull pretty hard to catch up with the lead group. We got ahead of the others on this stretch into Encinitas, so I waited behind to ride with Nel and Joey into our break spot at the 7-Eleven by La Costa Ave. We had the wind helping us along on the ride north, and some of the riders were going pretty fast in that latter stretch. It was a comparatively short break, and we were back on the Coast Hwy heading south in a group, again for a short while until we started spreading out. We kept going into Del Mar, and here I put in a bigger effort to push myself up into the village. Then I dialed it back a bit as we rode through Del Mar, still out in front. We rode up to Carmel Valley Rd and gathered everybody up again. Then it was over to the 56 bike path via the new route, and a pretty fast stretch up to the cul de sac, with Eric periodically pushing the pace and me doing the same in response. We rode up to Carmel Valley Rd, gathered everybody together again and tried a pace line up to Camino del Sur. It was pretty successful with 5 riders (Charlie, Joey, Eric, Perse, and me), we stayed together even on the gradual climb. The others caught up with us at the turn, and we headed back via Camino del Sur. I pushed myself again here and got out in front of the others for a while. Then I waited at the San Dieguito Rd intersection for everybody to get through before continuing. I ended up catching everybody except Jed, who was just too far ahead for me to close the gap. So, he, Eric, and Jamil all had strong finishes. I stayed around until everybody was back, then rode home the new normal way, not super fast but fast enough to try and preserve most of my average speed. Had a pretty decent day, didn't feel at the top of my form, but there weren't any super strong riders in the group to push me hard for long.

Avg speed = 17.7 mph (17.9 mph from GPX analysis program). Total mileage = 56.2 mi
Bisikleta route avg speed = 18.5 mph
Avg power = 151 W. Weighted avg power = 176 W
Total elevation gain = 2380'
Avg heartrate = 130 bpm (Coospo), 123 bpm (Fitbit)

Ann was gone when I got home, so I watched the highlights from the Dauphine, had some lunch, then had a really brief nap, before updating the blog. I worked on the GPX file analysis program to include the ability to compare power curves from two rides. It now works, is a little clunky and needs some cleaning up. Later in the afternoon, I planted another of the little plants we got at The Home Depot, in the wood chip bed, and I ran a drip line to it. Two more to go.

I'm almost finished with Steinbeck's East of Eden. Forgot to include Cathy Ames (aka Kate) as one of the main characters whose storyline is woven in. Also, Adam Trask's two sons Cal and Aron are prominently featured in the later parts of the book. Samuel Hamilton's family is also mentioned at various points in the story: Liza (wife), Tom, Will, Dessie, Olive (John Steinbeck's mother), Joe. Trask's longtime housekeeper Lee is also a prominent character throughout the latter part of the book.

06-07-2024 Ride/Swim

Got up early and went for a short bike ride, following the time trial route at the beginning but turning right at Ted Williams Pkwy. I rode up that little climb and then down to Rancho Carmel Dr, turning right there and continuing on the time trial route until Camino del Norte, when I kept going past Bernardo Center Dr up to Dove Canyon Rd. Right there and over to RB Rd, turning right and heading back down the hill to W Bernardo Dr. I wanted to stretch it out a little, so I kept on going until the park, turning left there and riding down to the cul de sac and back. Home the normal way from there.

Avg speed = 16.8 mph. Total mileage = 18.4 mi
Avg power = 150 W. Weighted avg power = 179 W
Total elevation gain = 1125'
Avg heartrate = 119 bpm (Coospo), 133 bpm (Fitbit, still reading high)

That made me rush to get ready for heading over to swim at the WWC when it opened, but I made it. This time, I only swam 1500 yds but didn't use the snorkel. Middle 20 lengths were done using swim pads. I felt like I was laboring with them on, seemed a little better without them. Finished in under 30 minutes. Then I headed home and noodled around for a bit before riding over to the Staples in Carmel Mountain Ranch for my TSA Pre Check interview. It went smoothly, had to wait a little bit but not so bad. Then I rode back home and did some stuff around the house until heading over to meet Blair and other HP colleagues to celebrate his 30th work anniversary (it was on June 6). We were going to eat at Ponce's, but they were really short-staffed, so we went to Board & Brew instead. At the lunch were: Kyle, Blair, Anna, Qin, Rima, Rachel, Josep-Maria Serra, Justin Albert, and Thanh. Got to catch up some with Kyle, James, Qin, Thanh, and Rima. Thanh is planning on stopping work when she gets laid off from HP, so she can spend more time at home with the kids. James enjoyed his cruise to Alaska but would have liked to spend more time in the ports of call. He and Kyle are in charge of planning out the LEP lab layout in the new Tech Center, where they will have about 2000'. Rima enjoyed having her parents from Iran stay with her for an extended period, but she was also glad when they returned in November. I stopped at Ace Hardware and picked up a battery for the cheap digital micrometer I bought a while ago.  It now works. In the afternoon, I gave my bike a good cleaning and installed the crank arm bolt that I received by FedEx on this day, along with the installation tool. It screws in via reverse threads, so once I figured that out it was pretty easy. I watched a little TV, then in the late afternoon I planted two of the four little plants that we got at The Home Depot the previous day, including running new drip sprinkler lines to them.

06/06/2024 Swim/Run/Ride

Woke up (<>) and got ready to head over to the WWC for a swim followed by a run. This was my first time since the new weekday morning opening time moved to 7:30, which allowed me time for the run before meeting for coffee with Gary and Brooke. 2000 yds in just under 39 minutes, and at times I felt like I was in a good pattern, still need to regulate my breathing better when using the snorkel. Then I put my stuff in a locker and headed out for the neighborhood 5k route from the WWC. I modified it a bit, since they were tearing up Hada Dr and I wanted to avoid the mess. Intentionally ran more slowly than last time, and I also think I felt the effects of the swim effort. Fitbit started automatically, so it didn't capture the entire run.

Avg pace = 7:54/mi
Total distance = 3.11 mi
Elapsed moving time = 24:36
Avg heartrate = 159 bpm (Fitbit)

Finishing the run, I saw I didn't have enough time to take a shower before heading over to HP for coffee, so I got changed and rode over there to meet Gary and Brooke. Some further discussion about planning for the upcoming move to the Tech Center, and conversation about the pleasure of camping (Gary not so much, Brooke a long-time RV camper with her folks). After I got home, I had some breakfast. Then Ann and I ran some errands, stopping at The Home Depot to get some plants (mine for the wood chip beds in the backyard), then shopping at Stater Bros and Aldi. When I got home, I had a little nap and did some reading before booking a TSA Pre Check appointment for Friday. Later in the afternoon, I rode over to HP for a short ride with Blair, who is still recovering from the burst eardrum he got in Hawaii. Headed through the neighborhood to RB Rd, then over Via del Campo to W Bernardo Dr and to the back parking lot taking the long way around the campus. From there, we headed back to W Bernardo Dr, then down to RB Rd, where we turned right. Up until we joined the old time trial route, which we followed, past Poway HS with its graduation ceremony, to Twin Peaks Rd. Turned right and took it and Camino del Norte back to Bernardo Center Dr, and thus back to the site. I stayed in Zone 2 for more of this ride than normal, matching my pace to Blair's, who was being cautious on his first significant ride in a while. After getting back, I headed home the normal way. It was a fairly windy day, and riding into the wind when we were heading west was a particular chore.

Avg speed = 14.0 mph. Total mileage = 18.5 mi
Avg power = 116 W. Weighted avg power = 147 W
Total elevation gain = 1270'
Avg heartrate = 110 bpm (Coospo), 126 bpm (Fitbit, measuring high)

Got home, Ann had already eaten. She has fallen again, the third time (that I know of) in less than a month, this time turning her ankle. She needs to see her PCP and find out what could be causing these balance/walking issues. We also got a fraudulent usage alert for our MasterCard credit cards, so we had to cut them both up and await new ones. Yuk! I finished watching Dune Part 2. It followed the storyline of the first book and left the door wide open for continuing sequels.

06-05-2024 Ride

Was originally planning on riding with John, but he came down with the flu and couldn't go. So I went solo, heading over to W Bernardo Dr and riding up to RB Rd. Turned right and took it up to Camino San Bernardo, turning left there and taking it over to Dove Canyon Rd. Rode down to Carmel Valley Rd, turning right and taking the two little climbs up to Black Mountain Rd. I kept on Carmel Valley Rd to Camino del Sur, turning left there and riding over to the 56 bike path. At this point, I was just riding below tempo but not consistently in Zone 2. All the way down the bike path to Sorrento Valley Rd, then over to Carmel Valley Rd. I rode up to the coast, turning left and taking the inside route up Torrey Pines. Here, I just didn't have any real push in my legs, so I gritted it out. Got to the top and rode down the outside route, then repeated this one more time. After the second time down the hill, I kept going, riding back to Carmel Valley Rd and turning on Sorrento Valley Rd. On a whim, I kept going on the trail, which took me over to Carmel Mountain Rd (near Mom's), where I turned left and rode up to El Camino Real. A right turn there, and some more gentle climbing up to Carmel Country Rd, where I turned left and rode back down to the 56 bike path. I took this descent at full speed, and it was exhilarating, a little scary. Back up to Carmel Valley Rd, where I turned left and rode, now noticeably slower, up to Camino del Sur. Left turn there, then home the old normal way using RB Rd and W Bernardo Dr. It was a weird day, I felt okay but not motivated to go either fast or try and stay in Zone 2 consistently.

Avg speed = 15.8 mph. Total mileage = 46.7 mi
Avg power = 141 W. Weighted avg power = 175 W
Total elevation gain = 3170'
Avg heartrate = 119 (Coospo), 134 bpm (Fitbit, anomalously high)

I had my volunteer shift at the hospital in the afternoon. No mistakes this time. I met a new Med Tech (I think that's what she is), Anna. I kept busy with a lot of room cleans, also talked to a number of visitors in the rooms with the patients. Not much other than that. Home, via Sprouts, as I should be eating more fruit and less junk food snacks. It was a quiet evening, although I ate too many snacks while watching TV later in the evening and had some indigestion on the following morning.

06-04-2024 Entry

Woke up (<>) and started breakfast, I made pancakes and we had them along with coffee and yogurt. Then we started breaking down camp. A note about the shade cover. It has gaps at the bottom where bugs can get in, and they frequently did while it was up. But we both got pretty good at trapping stinging insects in particular and then letting them out. It became something like a game. Ann is better at it than me, particularly with the other flying insects. While she cleaned up the breakfast dishes and packed the cooking gear up, I packed the rest of our stuff up. The air mattress did pretty well, it was a little difficult to stuff into the sack it came in, but I got it done. Lots of bugs around the camp, and we spent time removing caterpillars from everywhere. Got it all packed up, including the bike, and we were on the road by 10:00. No traffic on the route back, although we turned off the I-8 at Lake Jennings Park Rd and took it over to the 67, then Poway Rd down to Espola Rd. Once we got home, we cleared out the car and put the camping gear back on its shelves, and put the remaining food away. Lunch and a quiet afternoon. Before dinner, I weeded the gravel path in the backyard and moved the wood chips out. Then, after dinner, I went for a short walk around the neighborhood, then we watched an episode of The Three Body Problem in the evening. I went to sleep early.

06/03/2024 Ride/Hike

Got up around 5:40, sun was out. It wasn't too cold in the night, I slept well, got up once around 3 to go to the bathroom. Went again before getting ready for my bike ride. That's when I noticed I hadn't brought bike shorts. It worked out just fine without them, since I wore my tights for the anticipated cold. Also had long finger gloves and an ear muff. Headed through the campground to Sunrise Highway and then went northwest, in the opposite direction to when we drove up. This was the route I had ridden before on my bike, and it wasn't so steep on the downhill, also included a couple of climbs on the way out. Smelled a skunk, saw a roadrunner, views were nice. As soon as I got below the treeline, it was warm in the sunlit areas. I rode out to the 33 mile marker and turned around, retracing my route back. It was never very steep, and there were flat or downhill sections that helped. Still, most of the ride was above 5000'. Seemed like I had to work harder to climb these shallow grades.

Avg speed = 15.2 mph. Total mileage = 20.0 mi
Avg power = 133 W. Weighted avg power = 168 W
Total elevation gain = 1710'
Avg heartrate = 1122 bpm (Fitbit)

Got back to the campsite a little after 7:30, and we started to get breakfast together. Soon, however, the flies and bees/wasps were just too much to handle, so we put up the screened canopy over the picnic table. It was a bit of a chore but totally worth it! Not so many flying insects can get in, and we trapped the wasps that got in and let them out. Breakfast burritos were good, coffee was great. After breakfast, we took our time to clean things up, then we decided to go on a hike. Walked around the camp until we found a trailhead for the Desert View trail. We took it, and it shortly joined the PCT. Stayed on it for a while until the trails diverged. We did get a single desert view, but it was more through high forest than anything else. It led back to the campground, so we walked out to Sunrise Highway and walked to the store (both cafes were closed). Got some soft drinks and M&Ms and sat on the porch talking about upcoming church changes. Then we walked back and sat around the campsite after eating some lunch. Initially, I tried to sit outside, but the flies were incessant, so I went into the tent and read for a while, had a short nap too. We made stew for dinner, it was pretty delicious. Quiet evening, we walked over and had a shower to clean off the accumulated dirt. We turned in early, the flying insects were just too much for me.

06-02-2024 Swim

Had a very nice, extended waking up period (<>), then I got ready to walk over to the WWC for a swim. When I got there, it was quite overcast, there were two other swimmers who were in the pool when we started. It made me a little more motivated to keep a high pace, since one of the swimmers was swimming almost as fast as me. While I was swimming, I was looking for excuses to cut the workout short, but I ended up doing the entire 2000 yd protocol, finishing in about 39 min. Felt good to be done, I pushed hard, especially toward the end. Then I walked home and had some breakfast, packed up my stuff for the camping trip. Got the food and clothes packed into the car, then I put the bike rack on and brought my old bike. Ended up forgetting short finger gloves, bike shorts and a water bottle. I need to make sure I use checklists from now on. I also forgot my pillow, used a rolled up towel instead. Nothing catastrophic, just had to adjust. We had grilled stuff for dinner, pretty tasty. Ann had made a pound cake that she toasted on the grill and served with ricotta and berries. Good but not great. Camp setup went fine, the new mattress is nice and the air pump fills it up super fast. Could be a bear to get back in its sack, we'll see. It was a early night for us both, I was pretty tired.

06-01-2024 Ride

Got up and got ready for the Bisikleta ride. I was early enough in my preparations to leave a little bit early and get there before most of the riders showed up. Through the neighborhood, then the long way through the 4S Ranch neighborhood, including the little run up to the top of Four Gee Rd. When I got there, Charlie and Eric were already there, the others started showing up afterward. On this ride, which I mapped out, there were, at the start: Aaron, Arnold, Jed, Fritz, Charlie, Eric, Nel, and Rob (Fritz's friend). We headed on Camino del Sur to Dove Canyon Rd and took it down to Bernardo Center Dr, turning left there (we rarely do this) and climbing back up to Camino del Norte. Right there, taking it and Twin Peaks Rd over to Pomerado Rd. Just past the freeway, we stopped for Nel to put some more air in his tires, and Aaron kept going, so we were 8 riders from then on. Right on Pomerado Rd, and we took it to the top. I was leading most of the way during this ride, wanted to make sure we didn't get lost on the route. On the climb, I went all in, pushing myself to the limit (or very close to it). Set a PR of 5:33 (283 W, 158 bpm) on this climb, which turned out to be the fastest time of the day. Arnold's time was second fastest. We regrouped and then rode down the other side of Pomerado Rd to Miramar Rd, taking it all the way to Eastgate Mall. The road conditions in the bike lane were bad, not awful but really bumpy. We stopped for our break at the gas station at the corner there, then continued on Eastgate Mall over to Genesee Dr, turning right. On the climb up Genesee to Torrey Pines Rd, Fritz put in a big effort and stayed with me to the top, which was impressive, since he is still getting his riding legs back after his trip to the Philippines. We paused at the top of the Torrey Pines downhill to make sure everybody was okay with doing the loop back up the inside route. They were, some reluctantly, so we rode down and then back up on the inside. I put in a big effort here as well but was 10 sec slower than my PR (where I was riding alongside Sassan and he was pushing me to go hard). Still, I had a good result. Down the hill again, then up to Carmel Valley Rd with a right turn there and another right onto Sorrento Valley Rd to get to the new beginning of the 56 bike path. They did a good job connecting these paths, it avoids a lot of traffic on Carmel Valley Rd by the freeway and highway. Up the bike path to the second cul de sac, where I had us head up Old Carmel Valley Rd, which has a >10% gradient for a short distance. Arnold sprinted up that grade and I had to work hard to catch him on the continuing gradient after it slacked off. We headed over to Del Mar Heights Rd and turned right, taking it up to Carmel Valley Rd, where we turned left. We stayed on this road all the way back to Dove Canyon Rd. On the climbing sections, Arnold was able to hang with me, and I was going nearly full gas, although I could feel my legs tiring out. Then we took the downhill at high speed, it was exhilarating, and waited for the others at the turn. Back to the starting point by riding up to Camino San Bernardo, turning left and taking it over to Nicole Ridge Rd, where we turned right and rode to Del Sur Ridge, a left turn there. That took us to Paseo del Sur behind the Target, and we rode into the parking lot from there. I waited until everybody was back, then I started heading home, taking the new normal route up to Camino San Bernardo, over to RB Rd, then down to W Bernardo Dr and home from there. Legs felt fine at the end, tired but no soreness. As a matter of fact, I didn't have any back or neck pain, and I didn't experience any numbness in my hands. So, a good day in that regard.

Avg speed = 16.8 mph (GPX Program). Total mileage = 54.6 mi
Bisikleta route avg speed = 16.9 mph
Avg power = 159 W. Weighted avg power = 185 W
Total elevation gain = 3590'
Avg heartrate = 129 (Coospo), 124 bpm (Fitbit)

As soon as I got home, I grabbed a quick shower, got dressed, and then Ann and I headed over to Old Poway Park for the SD Folk Heritage Society Folk Festival. It wasn't as crowded to park as I thought it would be, Ann was driving while I ate something on the way. We stopped to get money on the way, which slowed us down a little bit. So we saw the tail end of an act called Scarborough, featuring two women - Ashley Norton from Lady Psychiatrist Booth, and Sharon Katz - who played Simon & Garfunkel covers. At the end of their set, they played a couple of original songs, and we recognized the one that Ashley Norton played from the Adams Avenue Unplugged set. Then we listened to Hot Pstromi, which had a klezmer violin player and a decent singing female lead, along with Fred Benedetti, who we've seen before. It wasn't really my kind of music, and I fell asleep during one of their longer songs. The final act we saw was Lee Coulter, a singer-songwriter from Australia who was very engaged and had some good songs. I would see him again, will have to be on the lookout for when he shows up at local venues. After his set we drove home, I dropped Ann off and drove over to Joe's house to pick up our camp stove for the Mt Laguna camping trip. They got new den and dining room furniture and did a major downstairs (and garage, in progress) cleanup. Joe showed me his proposed route for our backpacking trip, and it sounds like it will be a challenge for me. Need to start walking around the neighborhood with my backpack carrying weights. From there, I drove over to the Thrift Store on Valley Pkwy and was lucky enough to find a (hopefully) working crock pot in good condition for $7. I stopped and got gas as well, then headed home. In the evening, Ann went out with Emily and Caleb for hot pot for Mother's Day dinner, and I cleaned up the kitchen, watched a little TV, then loaded up the car with our camping gear. So, it was a busy day.
