Woke up and did a little blogging before getting ready for the Bisikleta ride. I headed over to the starting point using the original shortest route until I got there, then I had some extra time, so I rode down to Babcock St and turned left there to get to Paseo del Sur. Another left and back to the 4S Target. It was sunny when I left home and foggy at the start, but I knew the fog wouldn't last. On this ride at the start, there were: Jhonar, Perse, Arnold, Fritz, Nel, Jamil, and Eric. We began by taking the reverse of the little route through 4S Ranch that I often ride on the way over, then left from Alva Rd onto RB Rd. Down to W Bernardo Dr, taking a left there and riding down until we crossed the freeway and it turned into Pomerado Rd. Then we rode back up to RB Rd and turned left to get onto the old time trial route for a while. I pushed hard on the last segment of Espola Rd up to Poway Rd and set a Strava PR (3:20, 280 W, 153 bpm). Down to the turn onto Garden Rd, where we stopped at the 7-Eleven for our break. Originally, Jhonar and Perse were going to separate from the group here, but they decided to ride a little further with us. So we took Garden Rd over to Sycamore Canyon Rd and turned right for the climb up to the trailhead. Again, I pushed hard all the way through, especially on the steep section before the underpass, and I set another PR (10:56, 229 W, 150 W). During this climb, Perse, Fritz, and Jhonar turned around and started heading back (Jhonar rode to his daughter's dance studio off Poway Rd to practice for a father-daughter dance routine next week). So we were five riders riding back down the hill to Sabre Springs Pkwy, where we took the little exit ramp and started heading west on this road. I rode as the sweeper for this stretch, with Nel for most of it. We descended until turning right onto Pomerado Rd, taking it over to Oak Knoll Rd to get to Poway Rd. Headed west until we got to Springbrook Dr to turn left for our last significant climb of the day. Arnold sprinted ahead when he saw the beginning of the climb, but I knew that more was coming, so I dialed in a steady pace and eventually caught up with him. Set a PR (4:45, 251 W, 151 bpm) on this climb as well, completing the trifecta of all-out efforts on our three notable climbs of the day. That felt pretty good. Then we headed down Scripps-Poway Pkwy until we got to the bike path that parallels the freeway and headed north back to Poway Rd. Up to Sabre Springs Pkwy, taking a left and staying on the new time trial route to get to Camino del Norte, then back to the starting point from there. It was pretty warm by the end of the ride, and the westerly breeze was in force. So, I didn't stay long at the finish before heading back, turning on Dove Canyon Rd this time to get back to RB Rd, then home via the W Bernardo Dr route. Was pretty slow on this last stretch, I had put a workout in on this ride, leading the group for most of it. But my legs were fine at the end, just tired (had a short nap in the afternoon as a result).

I had something to eat when I got home, and it wasn't too long before Ann returned with Kathy and Heather. I sat with them and chatted while Ann made pasta salad and they ate, then I took a break upstairs. Emily and Caleb came over for dinner. We had grilled food, and I did the grilling. We spilled oil on the patio, and it's going to be a mess to clean up. Was a nice conversation with them, they are heading off to Las Vegas on Sunday for 4 days at the Mirage before it closes for good.
An update on books. I finished East of Eden. It was decent, Steinbeck called it his magnum opus, but I don't think it was a good as The Grapes of Wrath. I started reading Hugh Howey's Shift, which is a prequel of sorts to the Wool books. It provides some of the back story about how and why the siloes were built in the first place, not very believable, and some stories of people in the siloes.
