Woke up super early and went out for a 2.5 mile hike around the neighborhood with my loaded pack on. Wanted to get some steps in before the Catalina trip, since I didn't know what it would be like. Then we got ready and packed our stuff into the car. Ann drove up to San Clemente, and we ate breakfast in this combination donut shop Mexican fast food place. My burrito wasn't great. We drove from there over to the Dana Point marina, where we checked in for the boat ride and met up with Joe and Cathie. We chatted while we waited, then got in the wrong line to board the ship. Made it on okay and got decent seats in the upper section. The ride across was smooth and not so interesting. Toward the end we went out on the rear deck and enjoyed the breeze. Once we docked, Cathie was all hot to arrange a tour, so we checked out a couple of places, one for a 2 hour tour for over $100/person. Nope to that one, Ann came to the rescue with a 1 hour tram tour (Bear was our sing-song guide) of Avalon with some history of the village (about 7k residents) and the island. It was just the right length for me,and the others agreed. Saw the desalination plant, where they get about 20% of the water, the rest from rainfall capture. After the team tour, we had lunch at a Cafe with nice views of the harbor but not a great selection of vegetarian options. It was okay, the server John was great. Then we walked the length of the village shoreline, got some ice cream, and did some window shopping. Had a drink after this, but Cathie was anxious to get to the dock to line up for their return trip. So they left and we hung around for a while longer before heading back to the hotel. Had a brief rest there, then we walked to Von's to get some light dinner food. Ann had the good idea to eat on the rooftop, and we watched the sun set over the nearby hills. We duplicated the walk along the shore after that before getting back to the hotel. It was a quiet evening from there, both of us were pretty tired.
