Got up fairly early and got ready for a bike ride. It was overcast at the start of the ride and stayed that way until very near the end. I headed through the neighborhood on the bike with my new chain and adjusted headset. The drivetrain runs very smoothly, and the bike feels a little stiffer without the play around the front fork. It still creaks a little, especially as I am getting underway from a standing stop. I had a general idea about where I wanted to ride but made turn decisions as I went along. Up to RB Rd, turning right there and riding over to Camino del Sur to keep heading west. I took this road down to Carmel Valley Rd and turned right there. Just after the turn, I lost a water bottle and had to go back to retrieve it. I was riding at tempo for most of this ride and feeling the effects of the higher level of effort. All the way to the 56 bike path, turning left there and riding back up to Camino del Sur. Here I turned right and rode over to Park Village Dr, turning left there and starting the gradual climb. I noticed that my left shifter battery was low at this point, and it wouldn't let me shift into a lower gear. So I took a break, had a granola bar, and while I was waiting it started working again. I decided to nurse it to the end of the ride if possible, so I kept going over to Black Mountain Rd, turning right there and taking it until it turned into Kearny Villa Rd. I stayed on this road until turning around at the second overpass, near MCAS Miramar. Back to Miramar Rd, where I stopped for a second break and had a banana. Then I turned and rode up Pomerado Rd to the top, then down into Poway. The bike seemed to handle well on the descent, no wobbles, and it felt fast. I stayed on this road until turning right onto Metate Ln to get over to Community Rd, where I turned left. My legs were starting to feel the effects of the tempo riding, so it was a struggle to keep up the higher effort. To Twin Peaks Rd, turning left there and riding back to Pomerado Rd. Then it was up and down to RB Rd, where the traffic lights were out in the area. I rode to Bernardo Center Dr and realized I wasn't going to get to 45 miles. But with a balky shifter, I didn't want to prolong the ride. So I rode over Duenda Rd, turned right on W Bernardo Dr and took it down to Aguamiel Rd home from there. Legs were fine, muscles were tired.
Avg speed = 17.6 mph. Total mileage = 43.3 mi
Avg power = 161 W. Weighted avg power =190 W
Total elevation gain = 2520'
Avg heartrate = 124 bpm (Coospo)
In the afternoon, I went to the hospital for my ED volunteer shift. Nothing too unusual. I helped a guy find his wife, who had wandered away from where she was supposed to be. Was a little slow around 2:30, but it picked up, as it usually does, near the end of the shift. Was a quiet evening, Ann made a fire and we ate S'mores. I was pretty tired from this busy day.
