Got ready for my bike ride after waking up. I wanted to put some extra miles in before meeting Jim for the time trial route, so I rode through the neighborhood all the way on Matinal Circle, turning right on Matinal Rd and then right again on W Bernardo Dr. Up to RB Rd, then up the hill and through the 4S Ranch neighborhood to Ralphs Ranch Rd, where I turned left. Took it back to RB Rd, then I had to hustle to get to Jim's house by 7:30. Back through the neighborhood to Cabela Dr, then Luz Pl to Duenda Rd and Cabela Dr to get to his house. I got there right around 7:30, and we continued the ride. I slowed down for the time trial route for the most part, especially on the latter climbing sections. Even still, later in the day my legs were tired from the exertion.
Avg speed = 15.0 mph. Total mileage = 25.7 mi
Avg power = 127 W. Weighted avg power = 149 W
Total elevation gain = 1560'
Avg heartrate = 110 bpm (Coospo)
Ann was gone to church and hanging out with Kay for the afternoon, so I had the house to myself. I found a bigger tail light for my bike, charged it up, and attached it (it barely fits) to my seat post. I also made some oatmeal cookies, then read for a bit and watched Wolfs (starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt) on Apple TV+, it was decent. Later in the afternoon, I made baked ziti for dinner, it was also tasty, could have perhaps used a little more flavoring in the ricotta mixture. Evening was quiet. Ann had a good time seeing Jersey Boys with a number of women from church. She saw Jim and Marlene Tusing there.
Several days ago, I started reading Rings of Fire by Larry J. Hughes. It details the development by Edwin Land and colleagues at Polaroid of an innovative gunsight based on calcite crystals, along with the efforts to find and mine calcite with sufficient optical purity to supply the demand in WWII.
