12-14-2023 Entry

Went for a walk in the morning, a little less than an hour, then Ann and I went to a breakfast at IHOP sponsored by Brett Everhart.  Saw Jan Horvath and Doug Jordan there, it was actually a nice time.  Ann was worried that she would have to sit and listen to Brett, but he was pretty chill during the breakfast and sitting a little away from us.  After lunch, I went to the WWC and swam for 2250 yds, normal protocol for the first 2000 and then freestyle without the snorkel for the last 10 lengths.  Done in about 50 minutes.  I felt somewhat weighed down by the big breakfast, and I swam the first half with my rash guard on to keep from getting sunburned.  That thing gets waterlogged quickly, and it slowed me down a little.  In the evening, we went out to dinner with Jim and Marsha Van der Spek and Philip and Tricia Howerzyl at Bellamy's in Escondido.  This restaurant is a little pretentious, the service was pretty good but the food (I had a pasta dish, the only vegetarian main course) was meh.

I started Andy Weir's Artemis.  I probably read it before, but so far it's not sounding very familiar.  This reads like a book that he wrote back in the past, not as technical as his other two books and a little more immature in its style.  Storyline involves a moon base, Artemis, and a young woman who is a porter there who gets involved in some big-time criminal activities, including murder and lots of subterfuge.  It's more of a chase novel than a mystery story.
