This was a good day overall, with a couple of minor hiccups. Woke up (<>) and then got ready for the Bisikleta ride, where I had planned the route. I left early enough to get some extra miles in, and I took the extended route through 4S Ranch after riding through the neighborhood. I intended to ride up to the top of Four Gee Rd, but when I made my turn I cut the corner too close and my tires slipped out from under me in the muddy water by the curb. It shook me up more than hurt, I had a minor scrape on my right knee. My bike was generally fine, the right brake lever got pushed in the scratched up a bit, and the front fork was torqued enough that it was difficult to steer. But after exercising the fork back and forth a number of times, it was back to normal. I straightened out the brake lever and then rode over to the 4S Target, where Fritz gave me some paper towels to help clean off my scrape, and Zac gave me a bandage to put on it. On this ride, we had a fairly large group: Perse, Arnold, Ray, Zac, Fritz, Nel, Jamil (back from a great family vacation), Kamal, Aaron, Cam, Rob (his first ride with the group in about 4 months), and James (looking even trimmer). We headed over to Paseo del Sur and took it through the Del Sur neighborhood down to Camino del Sur, where we turned left and took this road to Carmel Valley Rd. I was in the lead for much of this ride and for most of this stretch, and Rob did quite well in keeping up with a pretty sturdy pace that I set. We turned right and took it to Rancho Santa Fe Farms Rd, where we took another right and then went downhill and back up before turning left onto Rancho Diegueno Rd. This has a nice sweeping, steep downhill over to San Dieguito Rd, where we gathered back up and rode a pace line to El Camino Real. On this section, Francis caught up with us and joined the group. Left on El Camino Real and then into Del Mar Heights, where I defined a pretty big pace on the climb and set a PR (3:39, 263 W, 160 bpm). We continued on El Camino Real past the 56 and up the hill where it turned into Carmel Mountain Rd. Zac was generally riding in Zone 2, but on this climb he kicked it into a higher gear and I did my best to stay with him. He backed off a little bit near the top, and I kept going at high speed. I set another PR on the stretch from just past the 56 up to Harvest Run Dr (10:37, 190 W, 145 bpm), and I was out in front of the others by a fair margin. I waited for them at the turn onto Carmel Country Rd. Everybody eventually made it up the hill, and we rode down to the 56 bike path. It was starting to heat up by this time, so I dialed my effort level back as we rode up to the gas station by Camino del Sur. We had a pretty good pace line going after Carmel Valley Rd, but it broke up near the end as a number of riders sprinted to try and finish in front. I caught them all, Francis last, but it was a big effort to do so. At the gas station, we ran into Tony Nuccup. After the break, we continued on the 56 bike path, and I set a PR on the full stretch on Azuaga St (2:54, 176 W, 141 bpm), riding on the road rather than in the bike lane. Then the group rode to the end of the bike path and onto Ted Williams Pkwy, a first time for many of them to take this route. Up to Pomerado Rd, and here is where I wasn't thinking again. We turned left and should have turned left again onto Twin Peaks Rd, but I had it in my head to keep going north, so a group of riders followed me. I didn't realize my mistake until we were almost to the hospital, so at that time I decided to ride over to Bernardo Heights Pkwy and backtrack from there. The small group of riders with me did the same, and we got back to Camino del Norte via Paseo Lucido, passing Rob on the way as he was headed back to his place. When we got to the intersection, James was just coming there, so we hooked up with him for a short while. From there, it was a straight shot back to our starting point. I didn't stay too long, as the temperature was still rising. Home the new normal way from there, felt fine at the end.
Avg speed = 16.7 mph (my route analysis program). Total mileage = 48.7 mi
Bisikleta route avg speed = 17.2 mph
Avg power = 143 W. Weighted avg power = 177 W
Total elevation gain = 3010'
Avg heartrate = 130 bpm (Coospo), 122 bpm (Fitbit)
In the afternoon, we drove over to Jed's place in Oceanside for the Bisikleta summer beach party. Ann and I spent most of our time talking with James, Rob, and Isabelle, but I worked the room a little bit and chatted with Andy and Roya and Eric, among others. It was a beautiful day, there was a bachelor party taking place next door, but they weren't too boisterous. Lots of food, and I had a pretty huge amount of sweets.
