08-28-2024 Ride

Woke up early enough to get ready for a bike ride with John. Headed up Azucar Way to Duenda Rd, then turned left and took the standard way from there over to his place. I was at a slower pace on the way over, not wanting to overdo it after the previous day's longer ride. From his place, we rode up the normal way to the top of Pomerado Rd, then down toward Miramar Rd. Had to watch out for morning traffic, which backs up on this road and can be sketchy. Down to Kearny Villa Rd, taking it south and staying on Kearny Villa Rd by turning right. I was still taking it pretty easy, although on the flats we were making decent time. Down to Aero Dr, turning left there and riding over to Sandrock Rd and into Serra Mesa. We turned right onto Murray Ridge Rd and rode over to Mission Center Rd, where we turned right again. This road has a steep descent, and I was careful on the turn, braking to keep my speed under control. This took us down to Friars Rd, where we turned left and rode past the stadium, taking the access road past there to get to the Murphy Canyon Rd Bike Path. The trail is also sketchy and has some homeless encampments on it, so that wasn't very scenic. This took us to Murphy Canyon Rd, where we rode all the way back to Clairemont Mesa Blvd. This has a generally gradual climb that I am well suited for, and I made good time going up this section. I talked to another rider, who was riding into work, and we passed each other several times. We took Chesapeake Dr to get back to Kearny Villa Rd. The other rider ended up sitting on my wheel as I gave him a draft to follow on Kearny Villa Rd. He was appreciative. Then John and I retraced our route back to his house, I was slow on the Pomerado Rd section, John was slower, I think he was running out of gas. Back to his house, where John made smoothies and we chatted for a bit before I headed home, again slowly, pretty much retracing my route there. I had the benefit of a little tailwind, and it was welcome. Didn't have sore legs at the end, but they were definitely tired.

I didn't have a whole lot of free time once I got home, had to get showered and and shaved and ready for my volunteer shift, as well as eating some lunch. The shift went by without anything significant going on, it was busy at times, including a busy stretch right near the end of the shift, as is commonly the case. It was a quiet evening, nice after a long day.
